Hikurangi Mountain Lions News

What a busy month we’ve had, with plenty of barbequing involved! The Whakapara Pony Club, a golf tournament and the Hukerenui School AG Day – all great events! It was good to help at the Hikurangi Firework event too! We’re thrilled to be bringing back the Hikurangi Santa Parade this year on 10th December – good to be able to organize this event and bring our community together again at this special time of year after an interesting and challenging few years! Get in touch if you can give us a hand with this – many hands make light work!

We also have a big event coming up on Saturday 28th January 2023 – our Annual Charity Golf Event! It’s always a great day and this time we’re raising funds for “Kind Hands” a fantastic local charity – check out their website! Why not get a group together to come join us? It’s always a fun day! There will be, yet another, delicious barbeque and a fantastic raffle. We’re also looking for local sponsors who can help us with a raffle prize or two, please get in touch if you can help us with this – more info to come – so save the day!!!

If your community project needs a helping hand –please do get in touch as we’re happy to help!

We’re always keen to welcome new members to our club. We meet twice a month at the Hikurangi Bowling Club, on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month. Why not come pay us a visit; it’s a great way to get involved in helping our community – many hands make light work and together we can do great things! Give Carol Head a call on 027 366 1029 or Lucie Eade on 021 150 3763. We look forward to hearing from you!

Recently, the Hikurangi Museum opened the exhibition ‘Health and Wellbeing in Hikurangi’.

For this new exhibition we have drawn upon our collection of interesting pharmaceutical items. A display of old medicine books, bottles and tins is supplemented by vintage health adverts and information regarding how our community was affected by past health epidemics. For example, the smallpox epidemic that affected the North in 1913 and the 1918 influenza epidemic. There is an interactive element, where you can write down how you and your family have been impacted by COVID-19. Please share so we can capture this recent moment in time – be a part of our community’s history! Beautiful illustrations from old medical books (once belonging to a local doctor) are also on display. Both Māori and early European settlers utilised native plants for their healing properties. Therefore, the exhibition also touches on rongoā māori. The accompanying image ‘Native Berries of NZ’ is a part of the exhibition. It was illustrated by NZ botanical artist Fanny Osborne, and was published in the Brett's Christmas Annual in 1913. We have this in our collection. Some of the berries and drupes depicted in this image can be used for rongoā – for example kawakawa. This beautiful image and other vintage botanical illustrations have been digitised. They will be available to purchase both as blank cards and framed artworks from the end of November. They will make great Christmas presents! A framed copy of this image is a part of our annual Christmas raffle prize. Profits from all sales will go to the Hikurangi Museum. See our Facebook page for more information on purchasing, or email us: hikurangi.museum@gmail.com. This interesting exhibition runs until early 2023. Make sure you don’t miss it.

Timeless Humour: My friend’s husband is always telling her that housekeeping would be easy if only she would organise her time better. Recently he had a chance to put his theory into practice while his wife was away. When I dropped by one evening to see how he was managing, he crowed, ’I made a cake, put icing on it, washed the kitchen cupboards, scrubbed the kitchen floor, walls and ceiling, and even had a bath.’ I was about to concede that perhaps he was a better manager than his wife, when he added sheepishly, ’When I was making the chocolate icing, I forgot to turn off the mixer before taking the beaters out of the bowl, so I had to do all the rest.

Chi:

My wife and her friend Karen were talking about their labour saving devices as they pulled into our driveway. Karen said, ‘I love my new garage-door opener.’ ‘I love mine too,’ my wife replied, and honked the horn three times. That was a signal for me to come out and open the garage.

HIKURANGI POLICE

Policeman Pete

I have, like many, been able to avoid the virus, up till now that is. COVID has found me and its official it “sucks”. I have been laid out plenty of times with illness and the occasional rugby hits, but this is the worst by far.

There are two things guaranteed with me in this world, I love eating and I have a vast bank of energy levels and drive, I am an active relaxer. Even when ill in the past I never lost the ability to eat my way out of it and recover quickly to remain active. My wife knew things were bad when I couldn’t eat it had to be a major. At its worst I was in hospital for check-ups, and I can’t think of the best thing because there wasn’t one. Although I have tested negative now, the symptoms continue. The lungs are struggling, the energy levels are still missing, and the cough and fever remains. Looking forward to the recovery albeit a slow one, getting lots of advice to rest up take it easy don’t rush it, easier said than done unfortunately.

On a much better note we have welcomed Constable Greg Radovanovich (known as Rado) to the Hikurangi role replacing Lisa. He has a laid-back friendly nature with a lot of experience especially in small station policing. He will certainly add fresh ideas and knowledge to the growing demands. You will see him driving the Captiva around, he is keen to get to know the area and people.

If you see Greg on the beat introduce yourself and have a yarn, he’s very approachable. Well until I’m able to get off the couch, be seeing you on the rounds, stay safe out there catch up soon.

HIKURANGI VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE

Hi Hikurangi

Ever thought about joining the Fire Brigade? We are currently on the hunt for people willing to join our Operational Support. Operational Support assist Firefighters on scene with tasks such as traffic control, lighting, scene safety and a range of other tasks. Come down and see us on Mondays from 6.30pm to find out more.

We continue to have some unpredictable weather at the moment. Please take care on the roads. Make sure items around your section are secure such as outdoor furniture and tramp before any strong wind arrives. Remember with the bad wind there is always the potential for power cuts, make sure you can access things like torches easily, ideally don’t rely on your phones light as Facebook is a handy tool to monitor what’s happening, a phones light will drain the battery faster.

It was great to see so many people at the fireworks display, we certainly enjoyed the night hopefully you did to. We are now looking forward to the Christmas Parade

Check out fireandemergency.nz for tips on staying safe Need help or advice you can contact us on Facebook, Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING "Bruce and Davina would like to warmly thank members of our great community who stepped up and supported us when Bruce's drill was taken while he was on a job. Marion Redfern Craftswoman, Iain MacLean "The Carpenter's Son Ltd" - Hand Made Casket Specialists, Wayne Fowell "Auto Focus Ltd", Teri and Willy "Hikurangi Panel Beaters" and Julie and Neil Wood "Scooter Works". We were touched by the kindness shown when Iain visited with cash collected to buy a new drill. When the news is dominated by stories of thieving, vandalism, ram raids, assaults and more we must remember that an abundance of good stuff also happens in Hikurangi and throughout Aotearoa New Zealand."

Hikurangi Golf Club

The Tri Series was held last month, although we did not put on the best weather, 9 holes was played for scoring and some even completed the whole 18. After a visit to Waiotira and Paparoa we prevailed and won the tri series by 9 points.

Well done to everybody who contributed to the scores and travelled to the other clubs for this event.

The 54 pairs tournament was held last weekend and congratulations to Greg Meara and Tommo with Gary Lynch and Craig Keatley runner up. Thank you to Paul and his helpers for running this great tournament.

Other events coming up in November: Saturday 12th LeGarth Trophy challenge from Waiotira

Sunday 13th Haggle + Mens committee meeting –Selection of officers for 2023 at 9.00am Sunday 20th Haggle Champ of Champs at the Pines. Sunday 27th AGM 9.00am sharp. Followed by unusual Sunday haggle. Blue is not standing on the committee this year so we have a space for a new treasurer. If you are interested in this position please have a chat to Blue or Sheryl if you want information on the position and get your nomination into Karyn before the 27th. If you would like to be nominated for any other position or would like to be on the board and help contribute to the running of the Golf Club please put your name forward to a committee member.

The Cancer Society are holding “the longest day of golf” fund raiser. Details are below and link to the website is attached also:
