Hikurangi Mountain Lions News

August has been a fantastic month for us here at the Hikurangi Mountain Lions! We’ve helped fund raise at the Golf Club Daffodil Day event and also donated $2,500; what a great day and plenty of money raised for a great cause! We also helped collecting funds outside Torpedo in town. We took part in the Whananaki Clean Up and have donated funds for a sensory infinity mirror to Whangarei charity “Kind Hands”, what an amazing organisation doing fantastic work for our vulnerable young people and their families. We’re always keen to get involved with our local community and help where we can. Please get in touch if you need a hand or if there is a local cause that needs some help.

We’re always keen to welcome new members to our club. We meet twice a month at the Hikurangi Bowling Club, on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month. Why not come take a visit and get involved in helping our community – many hands make light work and together we can do great things!

Give Carol Head a call on 027 366 1029 or Lucie Eade on 021 150 3763. We look forward to hearing from you!

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade Hi Hikurangi

During August we held our Honors Night awarding our members for service to the Hikurangi Community.

There were lots of awards handed out that night: 2 x 3 year certificate - this is the 1st award you receive after joining.

4 x 5 year medal - the 1st medal members receive. 12 x 2 year silver bar – this is added to the 5 year medal.

1 x 2 year gold bar – this is added to the 25 year gold star medal, and 2 long service good conduct medals issued to Qualified Fire Fighter Ratford and Qualified Fire Fighter Palmer adding up to total of 220 years service.

Thanks to Djillegera Algra for the music, to Alfie’s Spit Roast for the food, to our photographer and our driver for the night.

With daylight saving approaching it is a reminder to test your smoke alarm, give them a vacuum to give them a clean. Did you know smoke alarms expire? This can be found on the underside of the smoke alarm, if no expiry date is found its best to change it.

Housework: When my friend got a job, her husband agreed to share the housework. He was stunned by the amount of effort involved in keeping a house clean with small boys to pick up after, and insisted that he and his wife shop for a new vacuum cleaner. The saleman gave them a demonstration of the latest model. It comes equipped with all the newest features. He assured them. The husband was not convinced. Don’t you have a ride-on-model? he asked.

Out shopping, I narrowly avoided bumping into a fellow shopper. As he stepped to his right, I stepped to my left. As I moved to my right, he moved to his left. He stood still, put his hands out and said I’ll only do this once more then I have to go.

HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Quite a few of you might remember that there used to be a chemist in Hikurangi – opposite the Hotel, located at 25 King Street. Sargents Pharmacy from Whangārei started a branch here about 1944. A new shop was built in 1967. The building is still there. A new exhibition is being developed for the museum called Health & Wellbeing in Hikurangi. The former pharmacy will play an important role in this. After it was closed quite a few items were donated to the museum and are now part of our collection. This exhibition will also talk about other events that had an impact on the health and wellbeing of Hikurangi locals. We experienced diseases and pandemics long before COVID -19. The so-called Spanish flu reached New Zealand in 1918 and killed thousands in just a few months. Schools stayed shut in 1948 after the summer holidays and didn’t reopen until after Easter because of a polio epidemic. But people managed to get through these trying times. Before Europeans came to New Zealand Māori had their own medicine, mainly based on native plants. We will showcase this too. If you have anything to add to this exhibition – items, stories, or you wish to volunteer your time or expertise in this area, please feel free to contact us or just pop in.

Health & Wellbeing in Hikurangi will open officially at our open day on the 15th of October. The museum is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. Contact us by email: hikurangi.museum@gmail.com

You are invited to: Stuart Clarks 70th Birthday

This is an All Day Picnic on Saturday October 29th weather permitting. There will be a sausage sizzle, bring your own picnic lunch. (No alcohol). Kayaks, kites, guided tour of rock formations, a miniature of DOC rocks. Please enter @ SHI to the left of concrete barrier directly across SHI from the north end, or lake carpark.

I write this Bulletin piece today on Thursday 8th of September having recuperated after 2 weeks of leave and 2 days of training courses under my belt. The leave is essential in our line of work to recharge and spend time with family and friends and chill out. The training aspect is on-going and intense as you would imagine and expect from our organisation. Decision making under pressure and in the spotlight is common and we make the front page if we get it wrong. What I can say is that police do make mistakes occasionally and we certainly learn from it and strive to be better.

One of the trainings happened to be associated to what I do with Search & Rescue which qualifies me to drive the police 6-seater Can Am Side by Side in all terrain safely. Those that have seen me either driving it (on the road) or towing it through town will know it’s quite a bit of kit. This machine is a great asset for us with the ability to deploy Squad members quickly into search areas that require urgency.

Its also great that local business, Rouse Motorcycles kitted us up and provided the training ground as well for the course.

Great to see the team from Recreational Services out here in Hikurangi de-tagging the school. Caught up with them and had a yarn and expressed my appreciation to their efforts. They are under the pump in Whangarei and were keen to come out to Hikurangi more often with a little persuading so have them on speed dial. I think I have made it clear in the past about my hatred of taggers and I’m sick of painting the stuff out myself.

A little plug from Lisa, in regard to the kids crossing King Street, some of them are crossing on the blind corners by the Hotel and the corner north of Valley Road. As we know children don’t always get vehicle speed & distance very well so when they decide to cross it could be too late for the cars to stop safely. Just remember that from 2:45 to 3:15pm the speed limit on Valley Road & King Street by the shops is 40km. The school road patrol team do an excellent job of keeping the children safe at the end of the day so as adults lets support them as best we can. Keep up the good work team.

Stay safe out there.

Senior Constable Pete THOMAS

At the age of 14 I began a part-time job as a waiter. On my first night I took an order for steak. As I headed to the kitchen, the customer shouted after me , “Well done!”

I turned around and thanked him, proud of having done such a good job.

Funny Stories: If anyone has any of these that would be suitable for the Hikurangi Bulletin please call into Friendship House with them or email us at friendship@hikurangi.co.nz. They would be very much appreciated. Thanks Linda (Editor). J C Godfrey Certified Plumber & Drainlayer & Digger Work PO Box 53 Hikurangi 0150
