Waro Lake report

Kia ora and greetings. Well the walkway around the lake has been very muddy lately for some reason. While most visitors love and respect the area we still have a number who enjoy destruction. Cars and a truck have turned the grassed area beside the toilet into a real muddy mess. I’d hate to be the poor individual who has to mow it if we ever get the grass mowed again. I am informed that a new contractor will take over this month, but it will be a mammoth task with long wet grass hiding numerous objects such as rocks, drains and all sorts. One car was driven for so long the clutch burnt out and couldn’t make it out to the road so the hopeless driver torched it beside the skate park. Next day many visitors arrived on bikes but some kind people had tidied it all up. Many thanks to those who will clean up after the abusers!!

There is one very lucky dog owner who walked their doggy around the lake on Friday July 29th. I wasn’t home when it killed one of my pet hens, so the dog is still alive. The last dogs shot on my property was 2018 when 2 dogs attacked a large steer grazing 40 metres from the fence.

Maybe next time when you see bad dangerous behaviour in cars please report it, especially with a rego number to *555. That seems to get a quick answer. Take heart, spring is nearly here. Enjoy the beauty of God’s wonderful creation!

Stuart Clark Self - appointed Kaitiaki Waro Lake North.

Policeman Pete

Hikurangi Police

Another month has rolled by since my last Bulletin piece, which was not such a good topic, related to the local Advocate headlines at the time about stressed-out police.

As is always the case, more topics come to light in the never-ending high profile, front page grabbing job police do. I say it all the time we won’t be short of work, we are chasing our tails but keeping the nose slightly above water.

Changes are certainly needed to ensure the nose remains above the high tide mark and we have a Deputy Commissioner (Jevon McSkimming) who has great vision and ideas for the future. We were lucky enough to have a quick meeting with him recently. I say lucky enough because we managed to get to Whangarei without being required for any jobs. Some staff weren’t so lucky as a major incident was unfolding in Whangarei as we travelled in. Typical of our job.

I can’t relay exactly what he said and his forecast but its bloody exiting to hear and great for the front-line policing teams who for want of a better word are getting smashed.

One thing that really pleased the rural policing staff at the meeting was the allocation of resources heading north where its really needed most. The top half of the country is under resourced and that is a big positive going forward.

Speaking of resources, you may have noticed I have a new 4 by 4 Mitsi Triton, which has been long overdue in the area. Hard to believe we haven’t had a 4-wheel drive vehicle in the rural Hikurangi and coastal environment for so long seems ridiculous.

I look forward to testing it out.

Changing topic, I want to remind everyone on vehicle security, in this day and age where vehicles have been a huge target for crime. They are being stolen for fun, used in all manner of crime, ram raids are the new phenomenon now-a-days. The one’s doing it are all young and foolish and don’t think of consequences. We all need to sharpen up when we lock up at night. Pretty common sense but lock up your vehicle and remove your valuables. If possible, park on your property under a security light if you have one, if not get one, the solar powered ones are great. These are simple things that should be automatic and are proven to work.

That’s me for the month stay safe out there and I’ll see you in my nice new wagon.

Christmas Gift!!!

A friend and his wife let their little boy open all his presents at once on Christmas morning and were frustrated that the day’s excitement was over in 10 mins. So the next year they decided to hold the big present back until after lunch. They bought him a bike, but couldn't work out how to wrap it, so they tied a balloon to the handlebars.

Christmas Day arrived, lunch was eaten, then the mother said, “Look what else Santa has brought you,” and my friend wheeled the bike in. “Yippee,” shouted the boy. “A balloon”.

You might have noticed that there are works happening along the railway line. After years of stagnation they finally want to reopen it. So we will see trains running through Hikurangi in the near future again. There were plans from the Government in the 1870s to link the railway, which ran by then from Auckland to Kamo, through to Kawakawa. The route had already been surveyed but it took over a decade until the works finally started. One reason was the increasing amount of coal that came from Hikurangi. By July 1894 the railway line was extended to Waro and two years later to Whakapara. You can find our old railway station, which used to be behind the dairy factory in Hikurangi, at Kiwi North nowadays. It is part of the Whangārei Steam and Model Railway Club. The Hikurangi Museum is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. Contact: hikurangi.museum@gmail.com

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Well another month has speed by Christmas is just around the corner. Wont be long and we will have Guy Faulkes and Christmas parades to attend.

Last month we as a brigade went to the young farmers finals day at Barge park. We were ablely lead by our own fire fighter Emma Sanders who along with her Boss coordinated the Fire and Emergency participation on the day. The conditions were not great and we definitely got wet and stayed wet for most of the day. It was great to watch the young farmers tackle some of the tasks our communities fire Personal do. A big thank you to Emma, Brad , Hayden , Steve, Joel, Jerram for giving up their time to do this.

People it is a good time to remember that the roads are wet and slippery and not always in the best repair, along with visibility issues it makes driving a real chore at times. Please allow extra time and drive to the road conditions. It is not a race to get to your destination first and as you see our calls this month include a few road accidents.

When you do come up to a road accident and Fire, Police and Ambulance are there please slow right down and follow instruction that may be given.

Just think about this as you drive past with your phones out getting ready to put it on social media, would you want someone to do that to you if you were on the other side of the fence. Let’s try to preserve each other’s dignity.

On a different note it is that time of the year where we recognise our fire fighters service with our honours night, this will be held in August and will take in the awards we did not give out last year due to Covid.

Day light saving is just round the corner and hopefully better weather. As we start the spring tidy up and start stacking piles of branches and rubbish to burn. Please choose the burn site carefully, think are there any hazards over head or close by, what is the ground like is it covered in grass or on stones. Remember there is no such thing as a controlled burn once you light it the burning material along with mother nature has its own plan for your fire. You need to always have and escape route, a water source and you can always add more rubbish to your burning fire, but it is not easy to move burning items away if your fire is too big. Pets and children need to be watched closely and you should never leave your fire unattended. Our Siren has been changed to run on three full cycles which will cut it down from the nine we were having. It seems at some stage there was a power cut that had reset the Siren to a default nine cycles. We will trial the three cycles to see if they will work for our fire fighters to alert them. If not, we may need to increase it slightly. Lastly if you would like to know how things work or want to discuss anything that we are doing in or for the community please feel free to come down on a Monday night at around 6:45pm or later and stop in for a chat. We are only too happy to share with you where possible what we are doing and the reasons why, or who you may need to contact if we are not able to supply you with all the answers .
