BULLETIN DEADLINE FOR NOVEMBER IS THE 10th 2022

Ani Hemara, one of our most active and highly respected community and museum committee members, has a special birthday in November. Happy birthday Ani and thanks for all the good mahi you have done for the people of Hikurangi over many years.

Ani came to Hikurangi with her whānau from up north on the 11th of April 1941, when she was only 8 years old. The family first moved to Wilsonville into a two bedroom house. Her father worked in the coalmines for a few years before he started share milking on a farm just up above the Waro Limestone Reserve. The children often had to help on the farm before they went to school. But they were never too late for their lessons. Ani enjoyed living on the farm.

As a young woman Ani worked at the Hikurangi Hotel and learned how to cook different foods. She also worked at the Hikurangi fisheries and the fish and chip shop.

Together with her husband Hemara Toka Hemara, commonly known as Lofty because of his height, she looked after many children. Lofty, who was very much community minded too and a spiritual leader, sadly passed away in 1994.

Since 1991 ‘Whaea’ Ani has taught te reo Māori every week at the Hikurangi Primary School. She received a local heroes medal for her contribution to the Hikurangi community in 2010. Ani loves work! People like her make a difference to our community. Aroha nui Ani!

Coming Up For 2022:

RAINFALL SEPTEMBER 2022

HUKERENUI 115 mm

HIKURANGI 120 mm MARUA 139 mm

We would like thank the following people who give us these Rain Results each month.

Hukerenui: Lillian Reid, Hikurangi Linda Vanstone and Marua Rob Roest

These rain measurements are taken from their rain gauges in their local back yards.

To remind myself to give my pets some leftovers, I wrote a note reading ‘chicken’ and put it in their empty food bowl. The next morning I noticed my daughter had added, ‘No! This is a bowl. Trust me - I’m at university’.

Hikurangi Golf Club

Hi Everybody

Sorry no results this month, our fearless leader (PA) has been away with some up and coming future NZ Golfers so forgot all about us

Congratulations to Michelle and JJ, winners of the He & She competition, Felice and Monkey were runner up. Ladies intro to Golf afternoon is on this weekend. We have about 25 entries so should be a fun afternoon. The annual two day pairs tournament is coming up on the 5th and 6th of November. This year there is a slight change in that the pair can be either a two men, two lady or a mixed pair. Get your entries in now.

There will be a working bee on the 29th of October to prepare the course for the two day mixed open. More details to follow.

Twilight is well under way with some blustery and near freezing conditions for the first two weeks I am sure the weather will only improve from now on. The tee is open from 4 to 6 but at the moment 5.30 is a good cut of time to get in before dark! The caterer is on site so a yummy dinner is available afterwards to go with the beers.

The AGM will be held on Sunday 27th of November 2022 at 9.00am. Any motions need to be with the secretary no later than Saturday the 29th of October. Nominations forms are available at the club (by white board marker pens) or email me if you wish. Hikagolfgirl.

Hikurangi Mountain Lions News

Last month we helped out at the annual Whananaki beach clean up as well as one at Kamo High School, so much rubbish was collected, was good to get things cleaned up!

This month is going to be a busy one with sausage sizzles galore! One at a Golf tournament, assisting the Whakapara Pony Club with theirs in Hikurangi on the 26th and at the Hukerenui School AG day on the 29th –always a bust day there!

We are also organizing a Learn to play lawn bowl day for the youth of Hikurangi. It will be held at the Hikurangi Bowling Club between 5 – 6pm, date to be confirmed. If you are interested in taking part please contact Arlene by emailing at arlene@tiano.org.nz or text the word “bowls” and your name and contact details to 021 2022 706.

We are also organizing Trade Smart Solutions to come to Hikurangi (towards the end of October) to assist 1524 year olds with preparing for employment, pre-trade and apprenticeship opportunities, gaining drivers license's, regular mentoring visits and help with finding the right employment.

If we can assist you with this, please contact Arlene by emailing at arlene@tiano.org.nz or text the words “want to work” with your name and contact details to 021 2022 706.

We’re always keen to welcome new members to our club. We meet twice a month at the Hikurangi Bowling Club, on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month. Why not come take a visit and get involved in helping our community – many hands make light work and together we can do great things!

Give Carol Head a call on 027 366 1029 or Lucie Eade on 021 150 3763. We look forward to hearing from you!

Attention DOG owners!

Did you know we have breeding kiwi in our back yard right here in Hikurangi ? We are looking at hosting a FREE Know Your Dog Workshop run by our friends Kiwi Coast and are seeking expressions of interest so we can make this happen. This workshop will help you to find out how your dog thinks, gain insights into dog behaviour, and understand what they are trying to tell you! Uncontrolled dogs are one of the top threats to Kiwi. Let’s do our bit to become responsible dog owners. This will be a workshop for humans.

Saturday 19 November – 1.00pm to 3.00pm Venue: Whakapara Hall, Old North Road, Whakapara Register your interest with Ben Pearce – hikurangiconservation@gmail.com Share this with any dog owners in our district, tag them in! Hope

Hikurangi Police

Policeman Pete School holidays are in full swing and its noticeably quieter outside my window across at the Hikurangi School. I was lucky enough to have the first week of the holidays off but as they say it’s back to reality for me.

The true reality for me is that I am briefly the lone ranger out here my mate Lisa has left for a role in Whangarei. She didn’t make a song and dance about it which is her nature and just wanted me to add a little piece for her in this month’s Bulletin. I have put this at the end.

Just for me though I will thank her officially but for now I’ll put it out there that it has been a pleasure working with her out here in a real demanding role. Rural Policing has its moments and the majority of it is working alone or one up as we call it. Again, I have said it before the decisions you make is vital, so experience is everything. Getting to know the locals has been an advantage and we rely on the good relationship; this has been a strength of hers.

Her new role goes from being an all rounder in a Policing sense to dealing with kids in the school environment as a Youth Education Officer. This is a role she has done previously in the Police and will use the experience again to educate our young one’s around all manner of issues.

Rest assured we will be looked after; I can guarantee a replacement is coming and will be here to carry on the good work of Lisa. That person of course needs to be the right fit and know the rural demands so I will be introducing that person on the rounds, as I mentioned getting to know the locals is vital. So as promised Lisa has written a little thankyou as follows.

I just wanted to take this moment to thank the community of Hikurangi for their kindness they have shown me while working in & for your community. You have welcomed me & made me feel like a true Northlander. Small communities have their ups & downs but at the end of the day it is full of good hardworking people. I am moving onto another department, but you still may see me from time to time. Rest assured I am being replaced. Again, I want to thank the community for welcoming me, Hikurangi will always hold a special place for me”.

That’s it for me this month stay safe out there look after the kids these holidays and I’ll see you out there.

Hikurangi Friendship House would like to send our condolences to the following 2 families.
