SHARE 3 BEDROOM HOUSE HIKURANGI RENT $225 PER WEEK INCLUDES POWER PH 021 045 2834 At 3.30am a couple hear a knock at the door. The man goes to answer and finds a man stood at his doorstep. Having obviously been drinking the man slurs, would you mind giving me a push? The home owner apologies and says he needs to get back to sleep. He closes the door and returns to his wife in bed. He tells his wife what the man wanted and she says well aren’t you going to help him? Imagine if it was us stuck out there needing a hand with the car! So the man goes downstairs and out of the door. Because it was pitch black he shouts where are you? I’ll give you a push!. To which he hears the reply;

Great I’m over here on the swing!

John Jacob Meyer was the first blacksmith in Hikurangi. He came with his wife and three sons from Switzerland to New Zealand. In 1874 they first settled at Helena Bay, but moved soon after to Hikurangi and opened up their shop. The building stood where the post office was later erected. After John died his son Edward (Ted) took over the shop. He ran it for over 25 years. Gilbert Dobson bought the blacksmith’s shop later from the Meyer family. Please remember to check these sites when having a fire at home to be as safe as possible, and so you don’t get a visit from us. We continue to have some unpredictable weather at the moment. HIKURANGI POLICE

Policeman Pete I have a bit of an apology to make for this Bulletin about something that is out of our control and relates to the full-time coverage of our area in a Policing sense. I say out of our control because both Lisa and I are called away at certain times for other duties which puts the pressure on our colleagues in town to cover. The reality is that the current border control issues in the far north has required our assistance and has put a real strain on resources. The face of policing has changed dramatically and Covid19 is responsible. The situation as you can imagine is stretching the thin blue line to the limits, we really rely on Whangarei to cover Hikurangi to our outer areas when we are off duty or re-rostered for operational requirements. The sheer size of our area is an issue for town units to drop and go out of Whangarei to Oakura for instance, this is a logistical problem we have put up with for years. Finding a solution is the million-dollar question. Both Lisa and I worked the northern check points recently when they were announced at short notice by the Government at 5:30pm Tuesday 2nd November. I was placed at the Mangamuka check point for 3 days, Lisa on the Kaeo check point for 4 days. As a result, Whangarei had to cover our area as best they could in the circumstances. I was told at about 9pm on the Tuesday night to be at the Mangamuka check point by 6am the next morning. That required a 3:30 start and as is the norm for me I got very little sleep with the anticipation and thoughts of missing my alarm. Once on the check point the people of the far north were pretty relaxed and great to deal with. All manner of excuses were heard, deciphered and dealt with appropriately with the short notice catching a few unawares. Overall people accepted the situation, received some friendly engagement and education and got on with it. Currently and in future we could be re-rostered at short notice to pitch in and help. In the past Hikurangi and other outstations were left alone but things have changed with Covid. At the end of the day the safety of communities is the priority to stop the spread of Covid and we are dedicated to that. Rest assured if the job requires urgent assistance we will come as fast as possible. If the job has happened, the threat has diminished it will be prioritised and attended when able. I hope this explains our situation in the current climate. Take care out there keep up the good work. Senior Constable Pete THOMAS

Well everyone Christmas is coming so fast now it will be here before we know it.
