The Annual Mens’ Pairs Event was held on the weekend of 7-8 November in mainly fine weather except for some late rain on both days. The Tournament is played over 54 holes, 27 per day with first prize going to the pairing with the lowest combined net. This year’s winners are Shayne Lipsham and Ethan Baillie. Runners up Shaun O’Shea and Sean Doel. Second Runners up Gary Lynch and Graeme Attwood. Our main sponsor this year was Graeme O’Donnell from Northland Underground Drilling and also Gary Webb Painters. Thanks to them our prize list extended well down through the field and all the players had a great weekend of golf, most of them saying they will be back next year. A very well run, enjoyable, competitive, but fun event. Don’t forget twilight golf on Thursday afternoons from 4pm. Meals available, all welcome. Also summer subscriptions. A great way to spend the long summer evenings outdoors. Ph: Blue on 09 433 7453

POLICE SAY THEY ARE COMMITED TO HIKURANGI On Friday 6th November at 10.00 am members of the community along with local business interests, residents and ratepayers representatives from Oakura and Whananaki, met to discuss the future of having a dedicated Police presence in Hikurangi. Rob Huys, the Rural Response Manager for Whangarei/ Kaipara addressed the meeting and advised those present Northland Police are committed to providing an excellent service to the Hikurangi community and are currently in the process of selecting two new members to fill current vacancies. The selection process will take approximately 2 months and the new members are expected to be on deck towards the end of this year or, failing that early in the New Year. The new members will be expected to live in or near Hikurangi. We look forward to arranging a get together to welcome the new members into the community once everything is in place. In the meantime, temporary coverage arrangements remain in place and in addition to this further support will be provided by Whangarei Police as and when required. There will be an opportunity in future to attend quarterly if the community wants.

KEEP LEARNING:

Are things changing too fast? Does the world seem too complicated ? Well , don’t let yourself be brushed aside. Fight the tendency to be left behind. Stay in touch. Keep up. Make the effort to learn new technologies. Ask someone - your children or grandchildren - to teach you how to work cellphones, or DVD’s or computers. You’ll probably be surprised how simple it is - and you’ll get a sneaky thrill at mastering something new.

The area around our village, still called by many the “Hikurangi Swamp”, was once one of the biggest wetlands in New Zealand. Most of it is drained today and transformed into farmland. But as we have experienced this year again, it still floods. On the 27th of November an art exhibition about the Hikurangi Swamp opens at the Whangarei Art Museum called wetland. Loaned objects from the Hikurangi Museum will be part of it. Starting in December is another exhibition about farming in the swamp at the Jack Morgan Museum in Hukerenui (www.jackmorganmuseum.org.nz). These exhibitions will run for a few months. You are of course also invited to visit our museum in Hikurangi to find out more about this fascinating place you are living in. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment, if you are not able to visit us during these hours. Send us an email to hikurangi.museum@gmail.com or visit us on Facebook “Hikurangi Historical Museum”.

Hikurangi Village Church Transport: The Village Church runs a van for the week of pension payments to Whangarei for shopping. It leaves Hikurangi at 10am on a Thursday. Please either phone or text Theresa to book a place on 021 243 6889.

Also someone is available to take locals to appointments etc in Whangarei when necessary. Phone or text Stuart on 027 457 5247. The Hikurangi Library will be closed over a period in summer to update stock and install a new digital cataloguing and check-out service from Tuesday 15th December to Sunday 31st January. You are able to have books checked out over this time by arrangement, and books can still be returned to the after hours return box. Please talk to Sharlene (021616755) or one of the library volunteers if you wish to take books out prior to the closure commencing. Funny Stories: If anyone has any of these that would be suitable for the Hikurangi Bulletin please call into Friendship House with them or email us at friendship@hikurangi.co.nz. They would be very much appreciated. Thanks Linda (Editor).

THEFT DAMPENS FIREWORKS DISPLAY What an awesome night we had at the Guy Fawkes display on Friday night even the rain did not dampen our spirits as once again our community came together. However, after a long night full of fun, one of our volunteers was advised that someone had decided while we were all there enjoying the fun with you, that some people in our society had decided to break into our vehicles which were left at the station while we manned our fire appliances. This last incident had to be carried out by someone with a vehicle as the items removed were to heavy for one person to carry alone. I need you all to realise that without the good people who volunteer their time and energy to help protect those things you hold most dear we as a community would suffer as we waited for help to come from another suburb. That could add at the very least another 20 minutes before you see help arrive. Our Fire fighters give their time freely to do the job we as a community expect of them in all types of weather and all times of the day and night. Often leaving family at home in those special family times or when weather means they should be at home with the family protecting them. This is not the first-time people have broken into our vehicles or tried too. It is soul destroying for all our volunteers to come back tired and hungry after a callout to find this has happened. What this means is that we will now be taking further steps with the police and be under no allusion that should you be caught there will be consequences which will include a visit from the police. If you know anything about the Guy Fawkes night incident, I would ask that you call the local police station and advise them of any information you have. By in large our wider community do a great job in supporting us and we thank you all for everything you do for us. Please help us weed out those people who do this sort of thing and give Hikurangi a bad name. This has been a hard year for all of us and our fire fighters have still turned out to all our needs even with the threat of Covid 19. Let’s help protect what they cherish while they help you in a time of need. Lastly it is not long now till our Community Christmas parade and yes we will be there in support of our awesome community, lets show the rest of Whangarei how much fun we can put on for.

All your help is always appreciated Chief Fire Officer Trevor Gallagher

Please Note!! Tai-Chi will finish on December 9th 2020 and return on February 3rd 2021 but if this is different I will let everyone know. Thanks Linda.

There is great need for a sarcasm font. To Much Rest - If I won’t stop resting, I will soon start rusting. Male Mosquitoes do not bite. Lead by example. Cats will not walk on aluminum foil. Was learning cursive really necessary? The SENILITY PRAYER: Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, The good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference If love is blind why is lingerie so popular? If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? What’s brown and sticky?

A stick….

I would like to share an experience with you now that the festive season is over, about drinking and driving. As well you know some of us have been lucky not to have brushes with the authorities on our way home from various social occasions. A few weeks ago I was out at our Christmas social with all my work mates and after having a few too many beers I topped it off with a margarita. Not a good idea, knowing full well I was at least slightly over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before - I took a taxi home. Sure enough I passed a police road block but because I was a taxi he waved it through. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise as I have never driven a taxi before!!!!! A man goes to the doctor and says, “I have this problem with gas, but it really doesn't bother me too much. They never smell and are always silent. As a matter of fact, I’ve farted at least ten times since I’ve been here in your office. You didn’t know because they don’t smell and are silent. On this the Doctor says, “I see your problem, take these pills and come back and see me next week.” The next week the man goes back. “Doctor”, he says, “I don’t know what on earth you gave me, but now my farts-although still silent-stink terribly”. “The Doctor says, “Good! Now that we’ve cleared up your sinuses, let’s work on your hearing….”

These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, ‘For fast relief.’ My memory’s not as sharp as it used to be.. also, my memory’s not as sharp as it used to be.

It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker

Doctor, doctor, I think I’m a newspaper. Take these pills they’ll improve your circulation. Doctor, doctor, my brother thinks he’s an orange. Tell him to come and see me. It’s ok he’s here in my pocket. Optician: How did your eyesight get so bad? Patient: I was reading a book about how to avoid eye strain. What do you add thirteen patients to thirteen patients? Twenty sicks.

Patient: How much to have three teeth out? Dentist: Ninety pounds. Patient: Forget it - I’ll pick a fight on my way home. Doctor, doctor, I feel like a tub of margarine. Well spread yourself out on the couch. Doctor, doctor, skin trouble has given me a broken arm. How’s that? It was a banana skin. Doctor, doctor, you’ve broken you ar in three places. How? I’ve only been in one place.

Now, I think you’re supposed to share this with 5 or 6, maybe 10 others. Oh heck, give it to a bunch of your friends if you can remember who they are! Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, “How old was your husband?” “98”, she replied: “Two years older than me” “So your 96,” the undertaker commented. She responded, “Hardly worth going home, is it?” Definition of “OLD” I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair, she turned to me and asked, “Are you having it catered?” And that, my friend, is the sad definition of “OLD”.

An amazing 2 letter English word. A reminder that one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition. UP Read until the end ..... you'll laugh. This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UPto the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is

spe-

cial And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . my time is UP! Oh . . . one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? U P! Did that one crack you UP? Don't screw UP. Send this on to everyone you look UP in your address book . . .. or not . . . it's UP to you. Now I'll shut UP!
