To everyone who came to my aid during an incident at Tikipunga Countdown Carpark on Sunday 19/09/21. This is a huge Thank You, to the Security Guard who tried to stop the man driving away with my van and rang the Police, the young man counting heads (entering the supermarket) and the New Zealand Police. What a fabulous job they did on the day and following days, keeping me up dated at all times. Management at Countdown who will now update all camera’s and a few other things to keep us safe, too the shoppers who had their hands on me and I could feel their compassion. Unfortunately I don’t remember your names (even though I asked some of you several times) but I will always be grateful for your kind and thoughtful assistance. The chap has been dealt with by the Police and will go to court in November. My Kuri (dog) is fine and the van after a big clean out (because of spilt beer and body odour) is now driveable and we are out and about again. To each and everyone of you KIA KAHA ( Stay Strong) Kindest regards and Arohanui (Much Love) Melodie (Mel) Tracey. P.S. Don’t leave keys in car ignition, even if you are just putting something in the boot or bending down.

HIKURANGI POLICE

Policeman Pete I just want to bring everyone’s attention to the rubbish recently sprayed around town commonly known as “tagging”. I have a real hatred of this wilful destruction of property, its ugly and a nuisance to those who own the buildings and those who have to look at. These, may I say it juvenile delinquents because it is this group, somehow associate graffiti with art and fame. The fame side of things is why they place this rubbish in easily seen locations, close to main roads is a specialty and places with a high volume of people who pass by. Catching these offenders is difficult unfortunately, this is something they don’t do in the daylight hours in front of witnesses. It’s a creature of the night habit out of sight out of trouble mentality. Over my years in the police some of those that have been discovered “tagging” have suffered the consequences with some having the remaining contents of spray cannisters applied to clothing and skin. I am totally not saying this is or should be a resolution to the problem. It is not going to solve the mind set of this group now or in the future and you end up in trouble. Nuisance crime is here to stay but we can take away that “fame “element as soon as this rubbish appears. My recommendation is to take a photo, paint it out as soon as it appears and report it on the 501 number. If you need paint give me a call, I have just acquired a bit from a mate who’s a painter. Take away the “fame” you take away what motivates them. I did a bit of de-tagging myself recently on King Street. I am only too happy to assist and stamp this out as soon as we can. When it gets reported it will find its way to us at the Station and we can attend and deal with it. On another note, Lisa is overseas for a while if you’re wondering where she has been, I am relying on my colleagues in town to help me out for a while until she’s back. At the time of writing it is the school holidays, so parents keep an eye on the kids let’s keep them busy. Stay safe out there and let’s work together to keep the town looking good. HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM

When the first Europeans settled in Hikurangi in the 1860s the area was covered by heavy bush. The settlers started to clear the land. In the 1870s a Mr. Mathewson and Dr. Richard Sissons opened the first sawmill in Hikurangi. It was later taken over by George Buchanan who extended the mill and built huts and a two-storied boarding-house for his workers. Soon after several other mills were established in Hikurangi. The largest was Henry’s Mill, named after Jock Henry, one of it’s later managers. It specialised in milling kahikatea timber. Kahikatea grew in the Hikurangi Swamp and was later used for making butter boxes for the dairy factory. The timber industry in Hikurangi grew rapidly and there were a number of small mills besides the big ones. Once the bush was cleared most of the land was then used for pasture. Please come and visit our museum on 1 Alfred St. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com Facebook: Hikurangi Historical Museum Help support our local museum, annual membership only $10.
