BULLETIN DEADLINE October 8th 2021 Hikurangi Seed Library

Spring is here, all be it a very wet one so far. Lockdown was a great opportunity to prepare garden beds and to germinate seeds inside. The seed library was quite busy during lockdown with seed swapping taking place through people's letter boxes. The seed library is well stocked and updated every Friday and is located inside our community library.

What to plant in the garden September / October

Cooler crops like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, peas and beans can be planted outside now. Plants that prefer warmer soil temperatures can be sown indoors in trays for transplanting when it warms up a bit more. These are things like tomatoes, basil, cucumber, capsicum, eggplant, lettuce and zucchini. Strawberries can be planted out now too. Don't forget to plant flowers alongside your garden for the pollinators and to bring in some colour. There is a push in Hikurangi at the moment from various groups to promote food sovereignty. We have a great growing climate up here in the north and can produce food crops all year round.

The Hikurangi Garden project.

This will be the projects third year of operation. What they do is make vegetable gardens in our village for people that need a bit of a hand to get started. They provide soil, seedlings and hoses etc if needed. In return those people come and help build 2 more gardens for others.

Christmas harvest competition.

This will be held on the day of the Christmas parade. The categories are as follows. There is an over 18 section and 18 years and under. Best tasting: Jam Jelly Sauce Chutney or pickle : Most unusual combination of the above Best edible bouquet, this can be made with fruit, vegetables, edible flowers, herbs and edible weeds.

Tastiest backyard fruit ٠ Wonkiest fruit or vegetable ٠ Biggest Tomato Best animal creation made out of fruit or vegetables.

With these initiatives on offer there has never been a better time to start growing. For more information, please call Vicky on 021 159 3852 or email friendship@hikurangi.co.nz

HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM Most people couldn’t work during this past lockdown. But some professions had to keep on doing their jobs, because their work is essential to keep us safe. The police, the fire brigade, nurses and others have to be present even during a pandemic. We really appreciate their service for the community.

In Hikurangi we are lucky to have had our own police station for almost 125 years. It was established in December 1897. The first policeman was Constable Thomas Henry Hellyer Beddeck. He lived with his family next to the courthouse, at the back of their house was the jail. To get around he had to ride a horse and he was often away for several days. The old Hikurangi courthouse and jail were moved and are now part of our museum. In one of the jail cells you can find out more about the history of our police station and all of the constables who served in Hikurangi. On the 16th of October 2021 at 9.30am we will have a Special General Meeting at the Hik urangi Museum. At this meeting we will make a decision about changes to our constitution. All our members are invited! The Hikurangi Museum at 1 Alfred Street is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10am - 11.30am Or by appointment. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com, Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Society).

Please Remember to put your clocks forward 1 hour for Daylight Saving on Sunday September 26th 2021 Enjoy the lighter evenings.

HIKURANGI POLICE

Policeman Pete I am writing this piece on the first day of our return to level 2 having endured like everyone else the level 4 and 3 restrictions. This is again a harsh reminder of how life in NZ has changed, mask wearing, keeping a 2-metre distance, scanning in etc is something that is becoming commonplace nowadays. That’s all well and good but it’s the household “bubbles” and the freedoms we used to enjoy that has made the second “lockdown” harder than the first. I think it was certainly tougher this time around. Being kept from other family and friends due to “bubbles” is extremely challenging especially with those that are vulnerable. Not being able to go shopping anywhere other than Supermarkets was particularly hard for most the wife included. All I craved through those hard times was my daily coffee fix which is now being fully addressed. I must congratulate the people from our area not only Hikurangi but especially the coastal areas. This includes our regular runs between the Tutukaka area right through to up above Oakura. The vast majority of people during level 4 stuck to the rules with regards to water activities during that period. We had a couple of reports of activities happening which is of course disappointing and unnecessary. I was also advised however that locals are actually taking steps to educate those flouting the rules and passing on details of vehicles which is very helpful for us to follow up. The crime rate has been positive and trended downwards throughout the lockdown period as it had been during the first lockdown. Unfortunately, we must expect it to spike again now that we’re nearly back to normal. We need to stay vigilant report suspicious activities in the neighbourhood, vehicles, and people especially at night. Again call 105 to report something that has already happened and 111 for something that is happening currently and needs an immediate response. Finally, fingers crossed that we can enjoy our freedoms on the run toward Christmas & New Years. The last thing we want is another slip up that had us become temporary Aucklanders at level 4 while everyone else went to level 3, go figure. Stay safe out there be good to see you without a mask soon. Senior Constable Pete THOMAS

As you grow older you will discover that you have 2 hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. By taking care of others you are also taking care of yourself. In these Covid times the greatest good is what we do for others. It is our responsibility as humans to take care of each other?

Hikurangi Lions in conjunction with Hikurangi Friendship House and the Hikurangi Business Association is going all out this year. We are going to have the biggest Parade & Festival in our village. Last year was a huge success, this year we have made sure it doesn’t clash with the Whangarei Agricultural Show so all the horse clubs, farmers and businesses can attend. Everyone is welcome to participate in this iconic event -floats, walkers, club, animals, motor-bike clubs (no patches), farmers etc. We will also be having a harvest produce competition, as well as some local group performances.
