JULY 2021

BULLETIN DEADLINE August 10th 2021

Elizabeth (Bessie) Faithfull (1937 – 2021) Elizabeth (Bessie) Faithful, one of our founding members sadly passed away on the 24th of June. She was a dedicated and well respected member of our museum and community in Hikurangi. Bessie was born in Kamo. She was the apple of her father’s eye and as a small girl she often accompanied her father in his truck. Very early on - at the age of ten - she learned from him how to drive it. Bessie spent most of her life in Hikurangi until she moved into a cosy little unit in Merrivale in Kamo last year. She was married to Ted Faithfull and they had three children together: Lesley, Trish and Dean. Bessie was tireless in her community support. A few people might remember her as their kindergarten teacher in Hikurangi. She also worked and volunteered for the Arthritis Foundation. Bessie loved music, she played the piano throughout her life and she used to knit all sorts of warm garments for children. No doubt some of you have worn them without even knowing. We will miss Bessie’s grounded and honest character. She would always tell you what she thought, she was straight up and didn’t beat about the bush. She was also rather cheeky and we will miss the sparkle in her eyes and her humour - her laughing was contagious. Bessie’s sudden departure will leave a large hole in our hearts. But we thank her and her whanau for all that she has given the community of Hikurangi over the years. Rest in peace Bessie. Arohanui.

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Hi Hikurangi We have had those winter morning arrive, remember to drive to the conditions, frosty mornings can potentially leave us with icy roads. Make Sure you have removed all ice from your windscreen and you can see out your windows clearly before heading off in the morning.

RAINFALL JUNE 2021

Ever wondered what the numbers are on our trucks? These are our call signs 64 is our station number, the following numbers indicate the type of appliance 1 means 1st pump (a fire truck) 11 means water tanker and 29 means van. 641 – Hikurangi 1st pump, 6411 – Hikurangi Water Tanker, 6429 – Hikurangi Van.

HUKERENUI 247 mm HIKURANGI 300 mm MARUA 339 mm We would like thank the following people who give us these Rain Results each month. Hukerenui: Lillian Reid, Hikurangi Linda Vanstone and Marua Rob Roest These rain measurements are taken from their rain gaugesn their local back yards.

Remember the heater metre rule, keep a clear metre around fireplaces and heaters, do not cover or store things on top of them. In a real house fire, you have less than three minutes to escape. So give yourself a warning. Install working smoke alarms today. One third (33%) of the residential fires we were called to last year did not have smoke alarms. You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. Need advice? Message us on Facebook, come see us on Mondays from 6.30pm or visit fireandemergency.nz

HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM England made it into the final of the European Football Championship 2021. Hikurangi has also a history of football. The early European settlers brought their games with them to New Zealand and that included rugby and soccer. The Hikurangi Rugby Football Club was founded in 1894. It is one of the oldest clubs in Northland. Welsh coalminers who came to Hikurangi to work played a big part in establishing the club. The photo shows the Hikurangi Timber Workers Football Team. They won the Foote Cup in 1913. Find out more about the history of Hikurangi and visit our museum in 1 Alfred Street. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com or Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Society)

TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS

Policeman Pete A quick reminder as we come into the school holiday period to stay safe on our roads, don’t become one of the statistics this month, this year or ever. One silly mistake on our unforgiving roads is all it takes, slow down people you will get there as they say “arrive alive”. Police are making a big push this month to keep our roads safe, we as an organisation strive to become “the safest country” and the level of trauma we experience on our roads is unacceptable. Risky driving behaviours continue to be the leading cause of traffic crashes often leading to death or serious injury. We will be targeting those behaviours which includes speeding, not wearing seatbelts, drink driving and mobile phone usage. Since I have been at Hikurangi the sheer amount of reports coming from State Highway One through our area of idiot drivers going north or south is bloody scary. Overtaking on blind corners into on-coming vehicles, tailgating and road rage to name a few, we hear it all. Those events we take very seriously and do our best to intercept those vehicles and drivers if we don’t immediately a door knock follow up will be done. If you witness any of this manner of driving yourself take a Rego and call *555 to report it. That’s my vent for this month. On a much happier note enjoy yourself over the holidays with your kids lots of parents will be on holiday looking after the little ones. The weather has been rather lousy of late so fingers crossed we have a change of fortune. Keep them busy and of course keep yourselves and them safe. Senior Constable Pete THOMAS

The annual mid-winter dinner and quiz night held on Friday July 2nd went off with a bang. 7 teams were tested on their general knowledge by a series of questions compiled by our Quizmasters John & Heather Wilkinson, with team Abacus Upholsterers victorious and 2nd place went to the Holidaymakers, followed by Blue’s Beauts. All of the contestants were treated to an excellent dinner prior to the quiz provided by our top caterers Haam & Ryan. Thanks to them and John & Heather and the Bar Staff for a great nights entertainment. Congratulations: To our President Graeme Attwood and his partner Greg Meara for their win in the men’s Top Dog Competition. This would make them the most successful combination in the history of this event. They defeated Zippy and Rob Dawson in the final. Third place went to Monkey and Browsy. Please don’t hesitate to contact our Treasurer Blue on 09 4338453 if you would like to join a really friendly club. We have several subscription options with discounts now available.

WINTER IN THE GARDEN

July is still a great time to be planting winter veges including leafy greens, onions and brassicas. In the fruit garden it's all about planting new season fruit trees and berries. To liven up your garden add some beautiful winter blooms. Mid winter showcases a number of flowering shrubs that offer respite from the cold. Many fragrant flowers like Daphne and viburnum are in bloom this month. In the fruit garden it’s all about planting new season fruit trees, strawberries, harvesting citrus and pruning. Plant up pots, containers and hanging baskets with potted colour to brighten up the garden.
