BULLETIN DEADLINE JULY 9th 2021

Hikurangi contributed significantly to the International Rally of Whangarei 2021 by hosting a refuel and meet the drivers stop in Hikurangi township, as well as by having a crew of local volunteers from Hikurangi Business Association and Hikurangi Maori Wardens step in as safety marshals on the day on the Crows Nest Road leg of the rally. There were another 3 Hikurangi based legs at Kaiikanui Road, Marlow Road, and Tapuhi Road and these were all manned by various Hikurangi community group volunteers. The refuel and meet the drivers stop went well with great feedback from the RallyNZ crew and the drivers themselves. The Crows Nest Road leg went well also with good ticket sales on the day and no major incidents or issues to report. The winner of the weekend's rally was Hayden Paddon despite having to change a tyre in the final stage. He was followed by Ben Hunt, and Rana Horan came in third. Of the 66 starters, only 33 finished the weekend, a high attrition rate. The International Rally of Whangarei will return to Hikurangi in 2022 bigger and better if covid19 restrictions are lifted by then. A big thankyou to everyone who participated on the day, from the volunteers who helped as marshals, the organisers of the event, those who participated by having market stalls or helping provide food etc, and those who attended either the event in Hikurangi township or on any of the Hikurangi based rally legs.

HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM Located at the bottom of Hikurangi mountain, Wilsonville is a small settlement with its own history. Today Wilsonville is mainly known for its limestone quarry, a giant hole in the ground. People who live in the northern end of Hikurangi quite often hear and even feel when they have a blasting operation. This old photo shows a few coal-miner cottages and an almost empty mountain in the background. If you would like to find out more about our history come and visit the museum on 1 Alfred Street. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am, or by appointment. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com or Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Museum)

With recent spate of house fires around NZ in the last month, we remind everyone of winter fire safety make sure you have had your chimney swept, always use a fire guard with an open fire. Put all ashes in a metal bucket and pour water over the bucket, ashes can remain hot for 5 days. Have your electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician, make sure that it lays flat on the bed, that the cords and controls are not twisted. Remember the heater metre rule, keep a clear metre around fireplaces and heaters, do not cover or store things on top of them. In a real house fire, you have less than three minutes to escape. So give yourself a warning. Install working smoke alarms today. One third (33%) of the residential fires we were called to last year did not have smoke alarms. You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. Need advice? Message us on Facebook, come see us on Mondays from 6.30pm or visit fireandemergency.nz

Well done to Emma, Nelly and Steve

representing Hikurangi in the Sky Tower Challenge. Completing this challenge is a big task. Seen us training on Thursdays as well as Mondays? We have members going away in the coming months to various courses, Thursday night training is for these members to best prepare for their specific course. Will be out and about running all sorts of drills.

Hikurangi Police

Policeman Pete I hope everyone came through reasonably unscathed following another major storm through northland recently. Still a lot of water lying in the usual areas at the time of writing but seems to be better that the last storm. My colleague Lisa has written this months Bulletin following an online scam she dealt with and has the following safety tips for all. Just a friendly note on keeping yourself safe online. How do we keep ourselves, whanau & children safe while being online? Being online is second nature and is such a common part of our daily life. Unfortunately, there are people out there in the cyber online world that work very hard to find & connect with people to take advantage of them by ways of scams, romantic liaisons and bullying. It is very easy for online users to hide behind their computer when the post or connect with others. What you see online may not be what is in fact real. Some of these scams are very genuine looking and extremely professional looking. There are scams that imply you have won a prize or lottery and if you must respond quickly, send money to a specified account or purchase I-Tune or Steam Cards then you will receive a very large amount of money. Wow….this is too good to be true…..well sorry, if it sounds too good to be true then it is highly likely to be a scam. There is no shame in being cautious online and never be afraid to ask for assistance. NetSafe is a very good organisation that deals with all online problems, issues & concerns in a non-judgemental or bias way. They also have a good website to get information for you, your children & whanau and school. The below is their contact details. CONTACTING NETSAFE If you’re concerned about the immediate safety of you or someone else, please call 111. If you want help or expert incident advice, you can contact us. Our service is free, non-judgemental and available seven days a week. Email help@netsafe.org.nz  Call toll free on 0508 NETSAFE (0508 638 723) Online report at netsafe.org.nz/report Text ‘Netsafe’ to 4282 So, whanau, keep safe when you are online, keep your details and other important information private and don’t give your bank details out to non-authorised companies. And remember just to take a moment to think before you hit that Post Button – what you think maybe funny may not well received by others. If you have any concerns, please come into to see us at the station – if we can’t give you an answer we can direct you to someone a bit more knowledgeable than us. Stay safe out there. Senior Constables Pete Thomas and Lisa Magnusson
