Great news for those people who really wanted to recognise Yvonne Stewarts involvement in changing the Goat Track around Waro Lake into the popular walkway it is today. On the 9th of May, workmen struggled and sweated, digging holes for the new sign after the old one had been irreparably damaged. I am delighted to report that Spencer Jellyman of the Whangarei District Council has had the sign changed from the Yvonne Stewart Track, to the Yvonne Stewart Memorial Walkway as was originally requested by those involved in the work. Policeman Pete Most of my Bulletin topics have been related to “what’s happening "in the news at the time. It is of course predominantly about crime nationally or locally that I touch on. I give my take on it within guidelines of course and give some prevention advice. The current news headline is the “ram raid” epidemic sweeping the country mostly in Auckland, but it is a national problem. The problem has been around a long time, but the growing youth involvement is concerning. This is another step up from the stealing of the car to now driving through doorways and windows to get what they want. Unfortunately, the planning and execution is advancing through being filmed and circulated on social media and word of mouth. The youth of today can steal a car in under a minute. A flathead screwdriver and vice grips are all that’s needed and certain cars are targeted, Mazda Demio’s are a prime example. There was a competition at one stage on social media based on who could steal the most Mazda Demio’s. As explained now the youth are putting them through shop fronts and the question is what’s next. The youth involved are now aged under 10 years, they are being led astray by the older more experienced youth offenders and lack the ability to understand fully the consequences and impact of their actions. The one’s that do understand are their parents, why are these kids on the streets in the early hours stealing and causing Imayhem.have13 years’ experience dealing with youth under my belt as part of the now former Youth Crime Unit in Whangarei. We were a team of 5 at its maximum that dealt exclusively with youth crime, we were very busy. We built relationships with our clients their associates and importantly the parents. Once you get the parents listening and on board its amazing how the attitudes change, and the truth comes out. I’m not so sure that the recipe is the same now a days the struggle to get parents listening and putting in barriers I fear is gone. Kids need role models and stability at home. We can all contribute no matter what the situation is at home. There’s a saying “the strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home” (Confucius) Take care out there keep an eye on your kids stay safe.

The Old Testament of the Holy Bible is being proved to be a historical document as people and places mentioned in it have been discovered by archaeologists. It covers many hundreds of years of the life of Israel. During those periods when the nation honoured and worshipped God, He ensured the land produced in abundance and the people lived in peace and prosperity. When life became so good they felt no need of God. They would drift away to worship idol’s they made themselves and they would descend into all sorts of depravity and God would allow them to become captives and slaves to their many enemies. Sometimes their cities would be surrounded and besieged just like those in Ukrane today. In one instance they killed and ate their own children. When life became so desperate they would once again cry out to God and repent of their abandonment of Him and His ways. Then He could hear from them and heal them and their land. What then a waits for us in this beautiful land that has been so blessed by God for over 200 years since the Gospel was Ist preached in 1814? Terrible things continued to happen to many people since, but we have generally been able to live abundant lives until a few generations ago. As we continue on the path of rejecting Gos and his ways we are already seeing the results when the Speaker of Parliament ; of his own volition and without a whimper from Christian MPs, removed the name of Jesus from the prayer, he ensured it was then to any God except the One True God, who has blessed us so mightily and to whom the prayer was originally spoken. So from the very top, and right through our society, we have turned from God. We just need to look at the stats to see the results: Self harm, suicides, mental health, obesity, addictions, violence even to the unborn etc, etc, etc. Try and think of a Government department that is successful in its duty to the people. Deuteronomy (5th book) Ch 30 V 19 says: “Today I have given you the choice between life and death between blessing and curses. Now I call on Heaven and Earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!”

that this was initially within a leased area of an existing business. In 1924 the BNZ erected the purpose-built premises we see still standing at 7 King St. It cost 285 pounds to construct the building and was built by Alec Provan of Whangārei, from kauri and heart rimu. --The BNZ was open for business every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am noon and Saturday 9.30 11.30. But by the time it was disestablished in 1985, it was only open 4 days a week, for 1 hour each day. Following its closure, ownership of the building was transferred by the BNZ to the Whangārei District Council. The building remains an iconic reminder of our local history, and is one of only 10 historic buildings in Hikurangi recognised in the WDC District Plan. A Healthy Hikurangi initiative facilitated its use as a community space; most recently with the provision of sewing classes and a meeting space for the Māori Wardens. Friendship House is currently exploring other ideas for utilising this space for the benefit of our local community; bringing new meaning to the idea of what a bank is where monetary profit and individual wealth is expanded to include social profit and community wealth and wellbeing. Many thanks to the BNZ Archives for the support with this research and supplying this photograph of BNZ staff A. E. Dent Asst.Manager Whangārei (left) and H. Rex Ferguson, Agency Escort & Driver outside the building in 1976. Please support the Hikurangi Museum so we can continue to share local history with the community. Either visit us at 1 Alfred St on Tues, Thurs or Sat 10 11.30, become a member ($10 p/a), become a volunteer, or make a donation. All support gratefully received. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com

Little Susie, a six-year-old, complained “Mum, I’ve got a tummy ache.” “That’s because your stomach is empty,” the mother replied. “You would feel better if you had something in it.” That afternoon, her father came complaining that he had a severe headache all day. Susie perked up, “That’s because it’s empty,” she said. “You’d feel better if you had something in it.”
