The Hikurangi Golf Club was inaugurated in 1940. Originally called the Whakapara Golf Club, the first course was situated in McLennan Rd and was a 9-hole layout. After a few years the club relocated to a site approximately 3 kms along the Russell Rd across the river and from there moved to another site at the top of the Puhipuhi hill. Sometime in the mid 1950’s the club split in to two clubs with half moving on to some land at Crow’s Nest Rd, Hukerenui and the rest moving to the current site in Marua Rd. All of the original courses were 9-hole but the last move to the current site enabled the members to build an 18-hole course. All of these courses were built and maintained on a voluntary basis and are a tribute to the spirit and enthusiasm of these early golfers. Some experts from the minute books recorded in the 1940’s. “That the greenkeeper be given permission to sow seed at his discretion”. A request was made to purchase 2 dozen large bottles of beer for refreshments after play”. This was declined. The boys on the deck wouldn’t have been too happy about that. Thanks to the hard work by our early settlers and all those who have helped with the running of the club. Hikurangi has a facility the community can be proud of. For information on Subscriptions and Club days Ph Blue on 09 4337453.

Northland Regional Council is seeking feedback from Hikurangi locals to the Hikurangi Link bus service that runs on Thursdays between Hikurangi and Rose Street, Whangarei. It has been mentioned that an improvement to the system would be for the bus to drop-off and pickup passengers from the isite bus stop at the Town Basin, as well as to and from Rose Street. If you would support this permanent change, our voices need to be united to present to NRC. There is also an opportunity to voice any other opinions about this service, is there anything you think needs to be changed? Is there anything that is working particularly, well, or anything that isn't? Please send us your feedback before Friday 11 June. There are multiple ways you can submit your feedback:  hardcopy forms available at the front counter at the Hikurangi library; send an email to admin@hikurangi.co.nz;  contact Hikurangi Business Association through facebook; Send a text to HBA secretary Sharlene 021 616 755.

Hikurangi Community Library Hikurangi library has a new online catalogue up and running where the public can view all of the books we have in our library. If we don't have it, we can get it delivered to us from the Whangarei District Library. To view our catalogue go to hiki.librarika.com. HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM In 1904 a group of farmers came together at Otonga to form the Hikurangi Dairy Company. In the beginning the company used local coal as their energy source, it even operated a mine. No other dairy company in New Zealand had its own coal mine. The Hikurangi Dairy Company began to expand over the following decades. A new factory was opened in 1955. It was built on top of the old one, and the factory had to run during the construction time. The Hikurangi Dairy Company is not existing anymore, but the buildings are still standing in George Street opposite our museum. If you like to find out more about our history, come and visit us in 1 Alfred Street. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. Send us a mail to hikurangi.museum@gmail.com or on Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Museum).

I want to start by saying how privileged Lisa and myself were to be able to attend both Anzac Commemorations at Monument Road, Hukerenui and the Hikurangi event through King Street and Valley Road. Both events were well supported, the weather played its part and the organisers can pat themselves on the back. I must say I have never attended anything like the Hukerenui event before. A plane fly-over several times and members of the powder club letting off a few coordinated shots were definite highlights. Covid has put these celebrations on hold in recent times so it was great to be involved again and we could show our respect in this way. Now for the gripe of the month. Lisa and I have been up to our necks over the last month with juveniles committing a large amount of volume crime throughout Hikurangi. Volume crime is described as “crime that has a significant impact on the community and the ability of local police to deal with it”. This includes vehicle crime, burglary and wilful damage and nuisance type offending. This offending over the period has coincided with groups of youth escalating in these types of offences throughout Whangarei mainly in Kamo. In some instances, unfortunately, they are linked to us here in Hikurangi through association. We have managed through hard work and evidence gathered by locals and ourselves to put a stop to it by holding those involved accountable. I am not claiming victory here offending of this nature comes and goes and will always be present that is the challenge for us all. The more information we get the better chance of success. The cameras and footage provided throughout the community in Hikurangi and on the coast have proven successful time and again. Never leave valuables in your vehicles overnight. Wallets, cell phones, electrical items are targets for car knockers they are in and out in no time. They tend to target vehicles parked on the road off properties on most occasions. I would urge anyone who witnesses youth or anyone for that matter wondering the streets at night especially the early hours generally in pairs or more, to ring 111 and report it. In my experience nothing good ever happens in the early hours, it’s certainly not putting the police force under pressure to take a run through the community to track down and talk to people and at least get an explanation. Flathead screwdrivers, pliers, torch, and gloves are the tools of the trade for car knockers, trying to explain having these items on you in the early hours on the street gets you a free ride to Whangarei Police Station. Looking forward to the Rally of Whangarei coming through the area from Friday 14 May to Sunday 16 May 2021 I would highly recommend watching this great event. Stay safe out there Senior Constable Pete THOMAS

LEST WE FORGET Linda Vanstone (Secretary) STAIRWAY SHOCKERS! Bill, Jim and Scott were at a convention together and were sharing a large suite on the top of a 75-story skyscraper. After a long day of meetings, they were shocked to hear that the elevators in their hotel were broken and they would have to climb 75 flights of stairs to get to the room. Bill said to Jim and Scott, “Lets break the monotony of this unpleasant task by concentrating on something interesting. I’ll tell jokes for 25 flights, and Jim can sing songs for 25 flights, and Scott can tell sad stories the rest of the way”. At the 26th floor Bill stopped telling jokes and Jim began to sing.

CHINESE, FISH & CHIPS, FAMILY MEALS, BUFFET BAR FROM 5pm Mon 4pm - 8.30pm, Tues - Sun 11am - 9pm

At the 51st floor Jim stopped singing and Scott began to tell sad stories. “I will tell my saddest story first,” he said.

Hi Hikurangi What an interesting weekend Were you prepared for the power cut? It shows the importance of being prepared for the unknown. While we carry on with our day to day lives, we don’t think about not having the basics until something happens, a long duration power outage shows us that, all of a sudden we need light, cooking abilities and heat but while being ready is important, safety is just as important. Candles become a vital part on our survival during power outages, make sure they are in a safe location away from materials like curtains. Remember the one metre rule with heaters and fireplaces, you should always have a metre of clear space around your heat source. Will you be at the rally of Whangarei? We will be. We will be around for the day helping with the fuel stop and kids events. Hope to see you there ! In a real house fire, you have less than three minutes to escape. So give yourself a warning. Install working smoke alarms today. One third (33%) of the residential fires we were called to last year did not have smoke alarms. You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. Need advice? Message us on Facebook or come see us on Mondays from 6.30pm. This year we have a team of 3 entered in the Sky Tower Challenge in May, climbing 51 flights of stairs, over 1100 steps carrying 25kg of kit all for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. You may see them pounding the streets training, say hi when you see them. OPEN 7 DAYS Mondays 12 noon till 7pm Tuesday - Thursday 11am till 8pm Friday & Saturday 11am till 9pm Sunday 11am till 8pm BLACKSMITH BLUNDER:

The village blacksmith hired an enthusiastic new apprentice willing to work long, hard hours. He instructed the boy, “When I take the horseshoe out of the fire, I’ll lay it on the anvil. When I nod my head, you hit it with the hammer.” The apprentice did exactly as he was told, and now he’s the new village blacksmith.
