BULLETIN DEADLINE MAY 10th 2021 This story was given to the Bulletin by Val Doel. This is a story of two women who started their school days at Hikurangi Primary school. They met up again later after they had each had a breast removed because of cancer. They joined a woman’s paddling team in the Tauranga Bay of Plenty called Boobops dragon boat team. Boobops are breast cancer survivors - Barbara Ross and Julie Doel are the two woman. They have regular practices twice a week. In each boat there are 20 paddlers, 1 caller who keeps time with a drum between her legs and a sweep at the back who steers. On March 26/27th they all flew to Lake Hood in Ashburton to compete in the nationals. Barbara and her husband took their paddles down in their motorhome . They got Gold for 500 metres, Gold for 200 metres and Silver for 2 kms plus 2 Bronze medals.

HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Taken in 1918 by Albert Percy Godber

This photo shows the burning of limestone at the lime works at Waro. You can see a lime kiln on the left in this photo. Limestone is formed when the shells of long-extinct sea creatures are compressed into a solid mass of calcium carbonate. Once quarried it can be used in many different ways. Lime is a valuable material used for farming and horticulture to sweeten acid soils, for building as a putty or mortar, as an antiseptic / anti-fungal, and for binding in unsealed roads. Quicklime direct from the kiln would remove moisture from the air - a dehumidifier. However, in this state it was highly volatile and caught fire easily.

In 1916 J. R. REYBURN advertised in the Northern Advocate " FARMERS YOUR LAND NEEDS LIME. ALL LANDS NEED LIME. There is positively nothing so cheap that will produce such excellent results. I can supply you with:— GROUND RAW LIME, BURNT ROCHE OR SLAKED (Direct from the Kiln). GROUND ROCHE LIME. My prices are: — GROUND RAW, ROCHE, OR SLAKED. Single ton £1 ss"

If anyone knows anything about the lime works at Waro please get in contact with the Hikurangi Historical Museum. visit us Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. We are open from 10 -11.30am. Or email us to make an appointment: hikurangi.museum@gmail.com

Hi everyone April has been a busy one in the area and on the roads in our area. Easter has seen the usual influx of holiday makers coming into the coastal areas which has its ups and downs of course. Unfortunately, Oakura suffered a spate of burglaries that found bach owners in the main arriving to break-ins prior to the long weekend. Windows and doors jemmied allowed these low life’s entry and the baches were searched through and valuables stolen. The usual items being alcohol, electricals, dive gear and fishing gear mainly. The investigation is ongoing, and we really rely on information getting back to us and people’s observations in the area. I’ve said it before in the Bulletin if you see something suspicious give us a call, take registration numbers and descriptions so we can follow up. Once again, the numbers for an emergency that is happening is 111 if its historical having occurred ie a burglary its 105 for a report. Both these instances get assigned to either ourselves or the nearest available unit should it be a 111 call needing urgency. Email us @ hikurangi.station@police.govt.nz Vehicle crashes have been a regular occurrence for our area and Northland in general. I have noted the recent article in the Advocate related to the conditions of our roads in Northland and the probable link to many accidents. It is great that the Otonga straights north of Hikurangi has had a major upgrade recently where State Highway One was closed for the weekend. This caused headaches to many who travel that route daily. Whether all that work has addressed the problem is yet to be determined, time will tell. We are now, I’m happy to announce back to full strength policing wise in Hikurangi. Lisa Magnusson has joined the roster and is full time here along with myself. This is great news and she has already brought some great ideas to the role around how we can be contacted and meet people face to face. The problem we have had is the nature of the job and sheer size of the area we police meaning we are predominantly out and about. Being able to come to the station, sit down and have a conversation is a matter of good luck catching us than anything so soon we hope to have something in place. We had a recent meeting with District Councillors and Armourguard Animal Control with regards wandering stock on our rural roads. One of the Councillors was former local policeman for the area Gavin Benney with 22 years in Hikurangi. He knows better than anyone about the issue of wandering stock and the consequences to drivers especially at night. I suppose this is a warning to all owners of stock caught wandering that plans are in the pipeline to address this issue and keep our roads safe. Lastly on Wednesday 14th April we have a welcoming/ Powhiri to Hikurangi for Lisa and I (mainly Lisa). This is to be held at the Hikurangi Bowling Club at 4pm on that date. This is a community event, and all are warmly welcome to attend and get to know us and our background. The police bosses are putting this on. We look forward to meeting the community officially. Stay safe out there. Senior Constable Pete Thomas

Hikurangi Golf Club

On Saturday March 27th a 10 strong Men's team from the Hikurangi Golf Club successfully defended the Le Garth Trophy for the 14th time. This time the challengers were the Northland Golf Club featuring several ex-Hikurangi members who were beaten 7:3. The day starts with a full English Breakfast provided and cooked by the Hikurangi Team, followed by some very competitive match-play golf with a few relaxing beverages. Afterwards congratulations to our boys for setting the platform and coming away with the result. The retention of the Le Garth Trophy has contributed significantly to the clubs finances and resulted in all of the challenging clubs, although defeated, leaving with enhanced impressions of our course and facilities. In other Club Competitions Fisher Cup Results: Quarter Finals Bob Bowness beat Craig Keatley, Miles Stewart beat Jimmy Kelly, Greg Meara beat Red Courtney & Blue Mauchline beat Stacy Kelly. Twilight Golf: This w rapped up on Thursday March 25th. Once again another great summer golf series with good numbers taking part and enjoying the beautiful weather and our great golf course. The winner of the Bill Laird Trophy for best stableford aggregate score between the Xmas break and the end of the series was Shona Keatley. Runner Up was Colin Billington, Chook 3rd. Thanks to our sponsors and our organiser Sheryl Meara...Legend, and to our Green K eeper Alan Healey who stepped in to provide the excellent meals at short notice. For more information please contact 09 4337 453 Doctor: Did you keep both windows open as I told you? Patient: Well there’s only one window, so I opened it twice.

A MOTHER… ...is a lady who looks surprised and delighted when her children bring her breakfast at four o’clock on Mother’s day. ********************************

When God thought of Mother, he must have laughed with satisfaction, and framed it quickly so rich, so deep, so divine, so full of soul, power and beauty, was the conception.

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Hi Hikurangi This month we start with a few congratulations to some of our members. Firstly, Sue Gent for the Deputy Chief Fire Officer. Sue has been in the brigade nearly 18 years and brings a range of skills to this role. Congrats Sue. Andrew Gibson, Emma Sanders and Hayden Bain have all recently passed their class 2 licence, this is the first step to driving the fire trucks, they will do a pump operators course and an emergency response drivers course to become fully qualified drivers. You might see the truck out around town as they get familiar with the trucks. Congrats Andrew, Emma & Hayden. Welcome from us to our 2 new police officers, its good to have you back in Hikurangi. We would like to thank the community for less vegetation fires, this is down compared to last year but remember currently we are in a restricted fire season, all fires must have a permit. We will put all unpermitted fires out. Head to checkitsalright.nz for more info about fire season status and helpful tips. In a real house fire, you have less than three minutes to escape. So give yourself a warning. Install working smoke alarms today. One third (33%) of the residential fires we were called to last year did not have smoke alarms. You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. Need advice? Message us on Facebook or come see us on Mondays from 6.30pm. This year we have a team of 3 entered in the Sky Tower Challenge in May, climbing 51 flights of stairs, over 1100 steps carrying 25kg of kit all for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. You may see them pounding the streets training, say hi when you see them. We will be holding fundraisers for this great cause, their goal is to raise $1500. Please help them to SMASH this goal. SMILE……...

When you do what you do with a will and a smile, Everything that you do will seem twice as worthwhile, and when you walk down the street, life will seem twice as sweet. If people you happen to meet, for when you smile, it is true, folks will smile back at you… so do what you do with a will and a smile, and whatever you do will be twice as worthwhile.
