One of the worst tragedies that hit Hikurangi happened on the 5th of April 1930. A bus with about a dozen teenagers drove home from the movies in Whangarei and got struck by a train broadside while crossing the railway-line near Hikurangi. Six young people died in that accident. Five were later buried at Kauri cemetery, one girl was from Auckland. On the photograph you can see the funeral procession that began at Hikurangi on Wednesday the 9th of April. All businesses and the mines were closed, the flags at half mast. Fifteen lorries and buses and over a hundred cars took part in the procession to the cemetery. Many more tried to go but couldn't get a ride, demonstrating the strength of support within our community. We usually would have our open day in March but we decided to postpone it because of the pandemic. Hopefully we will be able to have one a bit later in the year. We will keep you updated. Once more we would like to thank everyone who supported the museum in the last months through donations or otherwise. We have big plans for this year. Our buildings need to be renovated and we are trying to improve our permanent exhibition. Your help is appreciated and welcome. Please visit us, we are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com, Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Museum)

Hikurangi Police

Policeman Pete The obvious topic and talk of the country for 23 days has been the protest at Parliament. Like everyone else I was glued to the online links during the final stages watching my colleagues doing their duty and bringing the protest action to an end. That’s all I can really say on that matter because of course my view differs from some people, and we’ll leave it at that. Having said that, I am certainly proud of my colleagues many of which were from the north. Lisa was there the week before helping and doing her part to keep everyone safe. At the time of writing this piece I am preparing myself to travel down and do my part around reassurance to Wellingtonians and tourists for a week or so. Unfortunately, Covid is spreading at an alarming rate which was predicted by the experts, but it still comes as a bit of a shock to most how fast this new variant is moving. I am one of plenty up to now who didn’t know anyone within my circle of family and friends with Covid now I do and its creeping closer. We all need to continue doing the right thing and watch this thing peak and come down the other side. Its great all the restrictions of the past stay in the past and we have some form of normality in our lives. We have great news at our station with the apprehension and arrest of our most wanted in our area. He’s been on the run (literally) since September last year creating many victims, so Lisa and I are stoked he’s out of the picture for a while. That’s all from me for now I’m off to pack my bags. Stay safe out there look forward to doing my bit in Wellington and see you all when I’m back.

MORE STORIES NEEDED.

If you have any short stories or jokes for the bulletin please either come and see Linda in the office or email them to us if possible. Email: friendship@hikurangi.co.nz.

A Distraction From A Holiday!!! A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist. The woman said: “I want a tooth pulled, and I don’t want any pain killers because I’m in a big hurry.’ She continued: ‘Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we’ll be on our way.’ The dentist was quite impressed. ‘You’re certainly a courageous woman,’ he said. ‘Which tooth is it?’ The woman turned to her husband and said: ‘Show him your tooth, dear.’

We would welcome new volunteers on board. If interested please call into the library and talk to the other volunteers to find out what is involved.

A Missing Person!!! An elderly woman went to the police station with her next-door neighbour to report her husband was missing. The policeman asked for a description. She said: ’He’s 35yrs old, 6 foot 4, has dark eyes, dark wavy hair, an athletic build, weighs 185 pounds, is soft spoken, and he is good to children. The next-door neighbour protested: ‘Your husband is 5 foot 4 inches, chubby, bald, has a big mouth, and is mean to your children.’ The wife replied: ‘Yeah, but who wants HIM back?’

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Hi Hikurangi We are taking a break from training for the few weeks, this is to try and keep our members safe from Omicron so that we can continue to respond when needed. We are doing things a bit differently to how we used to in the past, we continue to follow our protocols to keep our people and communities safe as we have done throughout the pandemic. You will see our people wearing face coverings and physically distancing when possible. At incidents you may be asked questions about whether you have any symptoms of COVID-19, if you’re isolating or have been exposed to COVID-19 this is to protect us and the public. Unfortunately this year Hikurangi Auto Madness organisers have made the decision to cancel this years car show, this is a great day out that we have enjoyed being apart of every year and look forward to being a part of next years show. Currently all permits have been suspended until at least the 17th March due to the winds and dryness continuing to heighten fire risks, and no rain is forecast for the next 10 days. Therefore, existing fire permits remain suspended and applications will be on hold until further notice for all of Northland. For more info watch our Facebook page or visit checkitalright.nz

Are you up to the challenge?
