HIKURANGI VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE

PLASTERERS & PAINTERS PHONE: MIKE CARSON 0210463562

Hi Hikurangi This month we received a new fire truck, Hikurangi 641 has been replaced after 10 years and over 1000 calls for the Hikurangi Community. It has been replaced with a 2020 Iveco along with the new tanker, the brigade now has 2 brand new fire appliances to better serve the Hikurangi Community. In a real house fire, you have less than three minutes to escape. So give yourself a warning. Install working smoke alarms today. One third (33%) of the residential fires we were called to last year did not have smoke alarms. You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. Need advice? Message us on Facebook or come see us on Mondays from 6.30pm. We will be at Hikurangi Auto Madness, we will be on the BBQ serving lunch again this year, we will have things for the kids, and our new trucks will be on display. Come have a great day out and see some great looking cars. This year we have a team of 3 entered in the Sky Tower Challenge in May, climbing 51 flights of stairs, over 1100 steps carrying 25kg of kit all for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. You may see them pounding the streets training, say hi when you see them. We will be holding fundraisers for this great cause, their goal is to raise $1500.

Please help them SMASH this goal Currently we are in a restricted fire season, all fires must have a permit. We will put all unpermitted fires out.

Since the last bulletin we have had 9 calls

Coming to Hikurangi NEW ZEALAND RALLY CHAMPIONSHIPS This is set to come through the main street of Hikurangi on Saturday May 15th 2021. More information will follow closer to the time.

HIKURANGI HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Did you know that we once had an Anglican Church in Hikurangi? It was standing on the corner of Alfred St / Church St. George Wright was the builder, Maud Rickard’s father his apprentice. It took them about a year to build it. The first service in the new church was in July 1906. On December 4th 2004 St Matthews Anglican Church was moved initially by road and then by boat to Rakino Island in the Hauraki Gulf. The building is not used as a church any more, but the family who owns it now, is interested in its history. They contacted us to find out more details. If you know any stories about the Anglican Church in Hikurangi, and you want to share them, please get in touch with us. The Hikurangi Museum in 1 Alfred Street is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am, or by appointment. Email: hikurangi.museum@gmail.com Facebook: Hikurangi Historical Museum.

Justice of the Peace: Shayn Rouse Ph 433 8471 Don’t drink and drive take a Taxi? I would like to share an experience with you now that the festive season is over, about drinking and driving. As well you know some of us have been lucky not to have brushes with the authorities on our way home from various social occasions. A few weeks ago I was out at our Christmas social with all my work mates and after having a few too many beers I topped it off with a margarita. Not a good idea, knowing full well I was at least slightly over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before. I took a taxi home. Sure enough I passed a police road block but because I was a taxi he waved it through. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise as I have never driven a taxi before!!!!! JP and Marriage Celebrant: Paul O’Dea 0275348374

I’m back everyone, most by all accounts are happy some maybe not so. Boy have I missed this town, this area, the people the work. I want to thank those who pushed to get permanent police officers to the area and the feedback I got and heard was humbling to say the least and I am grateful. As a part timer in the community from May 2019 through to October 2020, I really loved the atmosphere out here and the freedom to lay a platform for the future. Unfortunately considering I was a fill in didn’t allow that platform to become established fully. Things are now different, and I am thrilled to be permanently based here with the 2nd officer not far away to assist. This officer (Lisa) is very experienced with close to 25 years in the job. She is coming north from the big smoke where she is currently attached to the Americas Cup yachting event. Her husband also plays a role in the organisation and we look forward and welcome both to the north on March 22nd when she starts. Given the sheer size of the area we police out here, it will take some time for her to learn the area and meet everyone, so myself and other staff will introduce as we go. I would encourage you all to say hello if you see us in your travels. On a different note I can report the Hikurangi area has not changed and I have been very busy. Since I started back on the 15th of Feb, I have had all manner of jobs, problems, issues, complaints to resolve some serious with lots being minor in nature. The recent Tsunami event was one for the history books. I started my shift 4 hours earlier on the 5 th of March to assist and went straight to Oakura. As predicted the locals were amazing and had it all sorted and the entire area through the bay and over to Ohawini was evacuated. I managed to find a few stragglers when I took a precautionary trip through but all in all a great response. The many high points were used and everyone in good spirits given the situation. It goes to show the good community vibe out there well done. A word of warning to those travelling on Marua Road past Gomez Road. The lime that has been spread on Gomez is being transferred out onto Marua Road by vehicles. This has caused the right-hand corner from Gomez Road to be slippery especially following rain. We had a serious accident there on Friday 26th Feb in the morning. The vehicle lost control due to those factors flipped and caught fire. It was not a good scene when Hikurangi Fire and I arrived and thankfully the sole occupant with assistance from the public got out uninjured. If you are on that stretch of road take it easy it is recommended at 45km through that corner heading toward Hikurangi. Look forward to catching up stay safe out there. Senior Constable Pete Thomas.

HIKURANGI MOUNTAIN LIONS

Hello readers Well isn't the months just ticking by into autumn already. As most would have heard we lost a very special friend and fantastic Lion Lindsay Caley. He did so much for us Lions and lots of behind the scenes projects, he was always the sort of guy who never moaned and got on with everyone. Last month on 27th February Hikurangi Lions put on a lovely service for Lindsay at the Hikurangi fire brigade. Many thanks to David for taking the service, to Hikurangi Loins for the nibbles and refreshments afterwards and Hikurangi Fire Brigade for the venue. RIP Lindsay Our Lions convention is coming up on 25th April, let's hope covid keeps away!!! It's been quite hard to plan things around the damn covid, with all these lockdowns so many things have been cancelled. Oh well not much to report on, but do remember we are always on the lookout for new members. We meet every second Tuesday off the month for a dinner meeting, and every last Tuesday off the month for business meeting. If anyone is keen to join txt or ring Carol on 027 366 1029. In the mean time keep well and safe xx

The wide Open Charity Golf Tournament was held at the Hikurangi Golf Club on Saturday March 6th. Under Covid -19 restrictions, a full field of 100 golfers entered taking advantage of the fine weather and the refreshments provided on the course and later in the clubrooms. Thanks to the generosity of our main sponsors, Croft Poles and Fulton Hogan and a long list of other sponsors from Hikurangi and Whangarei, this year’s Charity, Soul Food Whangarei were the recipients of some much needed funding. Congratulations to the organisers and participants in the 3rd running of this event which has now contributed approximately $15,000 to various organisations in our community. The Men’s Pennant Team had a good win in the last round of pennants held at the Northland Golf Club beating Sherwood Park 6½ to 2½. After a slow start this result puts the team in second place with 3 rounds to go. Club Days: Tuesday
