BULLETIN DEADLINE March 10th 2022 Hikurangi Historical Museum

Times have changed since the Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade was established back in 1915. Nowadays our firefighters are expected to attend all sorts of emergencies - not just fires. Every time we hear that siren go off we think of them being called away from their families, work or leisure time. Thank you to all of our local volunteer fire brigadiers - you are part of a lineage of 107 years’ worth of selfless service to our community. Your work is so valuable, that it is hard to imagine that back in March 1921, the Northern Advocate reported on the threat of resignation of the Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade - due to local ratepayers not wishing Hikurangi Council to take out a loan to pay for a motor reel and new hose. The fire brigade only had a hand reel to fight fires with – one that they had raised funds for themselves, as well as the building of the old fire station. This hand reel was inadequate and exhausting for the fire fighters to manually drag to the site of the fire, so much so that once they got to the site of the fire they “were quite unfit to pursue their labours”. It was proposed that for £500, a new motorised reel and hose could be purchased. Hikurangi at this time had approximately 800 inhabitants, but despite the benefit to home and business owners, this loan was not approved. The Council went on to lobby the Public Works Department for funds. This photo is of the 1918 Hikurangi Fire Brigade, please see the Hikurangi Historical Museum Facebook page for photo details. If you would like to support our local fire station, please get in contact with them. The Fire Station is right next door to our museum on Alfred Street. The Hikurangi Museum has photos of the Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade and some of their firefighting uniforms on display. We are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 10 – 11.30am, or by appointment. Email: hikurangi.museum@gmail.com

Hikurangi Waro Lake News All year the walkway around the lake is popular for walkers and dog-owner's. During hot summer days when the wind is gentle the carpark is full, and so is the area at the jumping rock; more so since the bombing competition up north. In general behaviour is great, but of course we still have the abusers. Dog poo every 10 metres, cars tearing up on the grass, the carpark and road scattering chip all over mowed areas. Even Cars/ Quads & Motorcycles on the walkway. The Yvonne Stewart sign was broken, ½ thrown into the raupo. I hear ther have been complaints about a large rock I placed to prevent these dangerous incursions, on facebook. Take your pick: a rock in the way, or cars and quads. If legitimate users continue to condone these activities by ignoring them maybe a gate could be locked lakeside of the transfer station. Just saying. I love this place and hope you do too. Stuart Clark Self-appointed Kaitiaki Waro Lake North.

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Hi Hikurangi We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday as we all head back to work or school. As we continue to go through this pandemic, we will continue to respond to callouts, things are done differently to how we used to in the past, we continue to follow our protocols to keep our people and communities safe as we have done throughout the pandemic. You will see our people wearing face coverings and physically distancing when possible. At incidents you may be asked questions about whether you have any symptoms of COVID-19, if you’re isolating or have been exposed to COVID-19. Have you got smoke alarms installed? This is a vital tool in your home safety kit. When you’re asleep, you lose your sense of smell, so make sure its in working order. Test it once a month, also give it a vacuum now and again, dust build up can trigger the smoke alarm to sound vacuuming the smoke alarm will prevent false alarms. We continue to have some unpredictable weather at the moment. Please take care on the roads, the constant weather changes can make the road slippery. The rain does not lift the fire season status.

Northland is still in a restricted fire season.

Hikurangi Police

Policemen Pete Greetings everyone I have been away for about a week or so in Waitangi as part of the Police Iwi Liaison Team that deploys to the celebrations each year at Waitangi. We are a tight knit group who share the same passion about the history of the place and other historical moments related pre and post the signing in 1840. Our group these days are made up of police officers from throughout Northland whereas in the past they came from all parts of the country. We do not wear the blue uniform which has helped bring our unique style of policing to the events that occur during the week. This year of course was totally different to years gone by. Covid restrictions have seen to that, no dignitaries were present this year and the stalls and celebrations that see thousands descent on Waitangi made it eerily quiet. We still deployed in a reassurance, engagement role throughout the week meaning the good relationship of recent years continue. I must put out a big thumbs up to Lisa for holding the fort during such a busy period. On a not so pleasant topic the rural burglaries occurring through the summer is concerning. The brazen nature of vehicles driving up driveways checking addresses is unfortunately what the criminal element does. The rural setting provides many things in their favour including isolation from neighbours and availability of police in a hurry. They have no issue with coming up your driveway during the daylight hours and have a well-rehearsed explanation for being there should they meet an occupant. I have heard a few but they will generally ask for directions claiming to be lost or want to speak to a random named person that does not exist at the address. Some will not say a word and flee. First and foremost, stay calm and if alone make a conversation around “my husband, sons” etc are just about here they can help you. Also, if you don’t have CCTV take the registration of the vehicle and descriptions of persons as best you can in the memory bank. This all assists us down the track. Telling police, it was a black car makes it a little difficult. Do not get in a confrontation. A recent burglary had a vehicle arrive at the house in a rural area having cut the chain on the gate some distance from the house. They were confronted, they asked for directions and quickly left. The occupants weren’t sure if they had locked the gate however checks revealed the chain had been cut. Of course, we recommend cameras be purchased and operating during the day and night alongside security lights as a deterrent but again this is expensive. It is a helpful tool though especially when signs are visible with warnings of CCTV operating. Stay safe out there again if its an emergency call 111 if it happened and it needs to be reported its 105. Senior Constable Pete Thomas.

Mother’s love for Children/Family

They always looked back before turning the corner, for their mother was always at the window to nod and smile, and wave her hand at them. Somehow it seemed as if they couldn’t have got through the day without that, for whatever their mood might be, the last glimpse of that motherly face was sure to affect them like sunshine. By Louisa May Alcott (1832—1888)
