175 years ago, on Sunday 11th January 1846, the battle at Te Ruapekapeka ended inconclusively. It was the last battle in the so called Northern War between factions of Ngāpuhi and British forces. The pā site just 30 minutes drive north of Hikurangi is a historic reserve today and definitely worth a visit. The famous Ngāpuhi chief Hōne Heke, one of the main protagonists of the Northern War, was in Hikurangi during the lead up to the battle tending food crops. You can find a few artefacts from the battle at Te Ruapekapeka in our museum. So come and visit us on 1 Alfred Street in Hikurangi. We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. Send us an email to hikurangi.museum@gmail.com or visit us on Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Museum).

Whangarei Museum Happenings World Wetlands Day

Collaborative work and guest speakers

February 2nd each year is World Wetlands Day to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. To celebrate we are bringing together specialists and our community from the Hikurangi Swamp area to share their stories and knowledge connected to the swamp. There will also be a performance of free improvised music including recordings from the area. Tuesday 2 February - 5.30- 8.30pm Whangārei Art Museum Koha entry WAM Improvised sound workshop for children This workshop for free improvised music and sound will create a soundscape by using sound recordings from the Hikurangi Swamp area in conjunction with live played music. It is suitable for all skill levels. Bring an instrument if you have one and be part of this sound experience. Even if you have not learnt to play an instrument you can still participate and make improvised music. You listen and respond intuitively without following a certain structure. Together we will develop a unique moment and explore the Hikurangi Swamp with our sense of hearing. The improvised session will be recorded and all participants will receive a copy. Participants will have the option to be part of a live performance on World Wetland Day (02/02) at the Whangārei Art Museum.
