Combined Chambers of Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop asks for assistance with court case
THE road to a school is usually paved with good intentions. But in the case of our very own school in Lydenburg for children with special needs, Estralita, the road is ironically not paved at all. In fact the cars that do use it every day to bring children with special needs to class can’t even use it most of the time without serious damage to their vehicles. Apart from the condition of the road, the verges are now illegal dumping sites with used nappies, condoms, sewerage and a small herd of cows eating the aforementioned items. ~ By Michelle Boshoff (continues on page 7)
YOU will be aware that TCLM continues to default on Eskom payments and it is believed that the account now stands at about R700 million. In 2017, Eskom cut the power to TCLM and as a consequence, the combined Chambers of Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop went to court to have power restored. The case was won and Eskom was compelled to restore the power supply. Predictably, Eskom has lodged an appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. If Eskom wins the appeal, the consequences of extended power cuts to the towns of Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop are dire indeed and will lead to untold hardship for all citizens in the area, including closure of businesses, large scale job losses and collapse of the water and sanitation systems. Civil unrest will follow. The previous High Court hearings and all costs were funded by York Timbers, to the amount of nearly 1,6 million Rand. Unfortunately, York is not in a position to fund the Appeal case as well. The combined Chambers of Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop are therefore requesting all businesses, large and small, as well as individuals, to contribute to the costs of resisting the Eskom Appeal. These costs are estimated to be in the region of one million Rand. While this seems to be a large amount, if we win the Appeal, most of the costs can potentially be reimbursed. Looked at it another way; if 400 businesses / individuals each contributed R2 500, we would have one million Rand … The combined Chambers of Lydenburg, Sabie and Graskop are therefore asking you to search your soul and to contribute generously to this effort. AN education expert has warned that matriculants need to take extra special care to ensure that they are signing up for the right qualification, for the right reason, at the right institution, and not fall prey to unscrupulous providers just because they feel pressured to sign up for anything because of time constraints. “Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has warned prospective students not to fall for bogus colleges, which can cost precious time and money with no return at the end, but to ensure that they sign up at a registered and accredited institution,” says Peter Kriel, General Manager at The Independent Institute of Education, SA's largest and most accredited private higher education institution. He says ensuring that an institution and qualification is above board, by doing the relevant checks (*see details right), is indeed a crucial step before one even considers enrolling. But more than that, prospective students have to ensure that their qualification will, after three or four years of study, in fact still be relevant and likely to provide a foot in the door and the ability to hit the ground running once that door has

In Lydenburg self is goeie neerslae waargeneem in die Potloodspruit omgewing, dele van Boomplaas en bo-op die berg in die omgewing van die Aartappel Produksie plaas. Aan die oostekant van Mauchsberg het dit goed gereën en baie van die watervalle rondom Sabie loop sterk. Ander laeveldse damme is egter nog ver van vol. Vir Lydenburg was die Desember syfer slegs 121 mm vergeleke met die langtermyn gemiddeld van 146.8 mm vir Desember. Dit volg ook op ’n besondere swak seisoen vir laat 2019. Die stand van Kwena, Buffelskloof en Ohrigstad is veral onrusbarend en hou groot implikasies vir plaaslike landbou en vir ’n stad soos Nelspruit in. Die Lydenburg dorpsdam staan tans op sowat 101 % en plaaslike spruite en riviere het nou mooi sterk begin vloei. Voorspellings dui op verdere reën vir Januarie en dit behoort Blydepoort en Kwena nog ’n goeie hupstoot te gee. Lydenburg is right up there in fifth place. From the Lydenburg statistics it appears that housebreaking occurred the most at 379 incidents. It is also important to note that crime statistics are notoriously inaccurate because many crimes, especially assault within families and against women and children are very seldom reported and a case docket opened by the SAPS. Many items stolen are not insured and therefore people do not bother to
report such incidents. Many people also do not bother to report crime because they do not trust the judicial system ranging from case dockets to court proceedings, the low success rate in solving crimes and the apparent ease with which perpetrators are released on bail. Intimidation and corruption especially in the rural areas often make people wary of reporting crime. It is important for people to understand that SAPS resources and budgets are often determined by crime statistics, so please report all crimes. That will ensure that more resources are allocated locally. Although several neighbourhood watches exist in Lydenburg, the number of active participants are very low. It is reported that in one area that is fairly actively patrolled, some 30 reported incidents occurred over November / December, this in an area less than half the size of town. Andre Coetzee

Die ‘drug lords’ moet ons kinders uitlos Kellysville, Lydenburg en Mashishing se mense skryf: Ons as mnre. Clive Jansen, Angelo Hartman en George Viljoen wil vra vir enige besigheid of instansie, hulporganisasie of welsynsorganisasie om dringend te help met die massiewe dwelmprobleme in Kellysville en Mashishing. Ons is ’n groep inwoners wat elke dag sien hoe die dwelms ons kinders verwoes. Ook jong mense wat nog nie werk het nie, hul ouers se meubels verkoop en dan daarmee dwelms koop. Maandagoggend 11:00 het ons ’n vermeende dwelmhandelaar in ’n rooi Figo gesien en agterna gesit deur Mashishing. Ons vermoed sterk hy het Tik verkoop. Maar al die dwelms op die mark is hier. Ons vra hulp sodat ons daadwerklik hieraan kan aandag skenk. Die groot probleem is dat die dwelmhandelaars wegjaag. As ons die inligting het is
daar nie altyd ‘n voertuig wat die handelaars agterna kan sit nie. Ons weet daar is baie organisasie, nie-winsgewend wat betrokke is by dwelmmisbruik en vra dat hulle ons kontak. Ons wil egter sê hierdie moet ‘n aksie wees wat dadelik plaasvind. Dit kan nie nog ’n week of maand so aangaan terwyl almal vergaderings hou nie. Ons is bewus van waar die handelaars vergader en waar hulle vir die dwelmverbruikers of selfs skoolkinders wag om te kom koop. En dit is ook baie keer waar die polisie hulle vastrek. Net verlede Vrydag is daar twee mans gearresteer. Daar is ‘n paar pandjieswinkels, wat nie algemeen onder die breë publiek bekend is nie, wat gesteelde goedere aankoop. The announcement by the department of education that though we received 81% pass mark, there is a significant decline in an area of maths and science. The bizarre behaviour by the erratic department to shift focus into sex education, by introducing the notorious curriculum called comprehensive sexuality education, is a mockery of our failed education system. An innovative type of education that prepares our kids to swiftly tackle the demon called the fourth industrial revolution is key, not sex education as is the case with the current curriculum. Houtwerk TOE ek destyds my huis gekoop het, het ek vir my ’n werkswinkel ingerig vir houtwerk en ’n herlaaikamer gebou vir my skietwerk, kompleet met die nodige gereedskap en toerusting. Hierdie was my stokperdjies. Ek het egter toe nog in Nelspruit gewerk en het voor sonop werk toe gegaan en na sononder huis toe gekom. My vriende het gewonder oor die werkswinkel, maar ek het verduidelik dat dit my aftreeplan is.

Verlede week het ek my nuwejaarsboodskap ter syde gestel om in te weeg oor Prins Harry en Meghan Markle. Gaan lees Britse rubriekskrywer Pierce Morgan se opinie daaroor. Hy som dit reg op. En die Britte is nie mal oor die idee dat ander lande te veel opinies het nie. Amerika dink dis wonderlik, maar hulle het nie ’n monargie nie. Die koningshuis het intussen die afgelope naweek die Koninlike Hoogheid (Royal Highness) as titels teruggetrek asook ’n paar ander dinge op hulle ‘ons-soeklysie’. Ek dink jy gaan gewis tweede kom as jy met die Koningin van Engeland onderhandel, al is sy jou ouma. Sy is altans al van 1952 op die troon. So hier is my wense en vertroue vir elkeen in 2020. Geduld, o geduld is een van hulle. Dat mense kos het om te eet, meer lag, meer slaap, meer lees, minder stres, meer kuier, meer reis, meer goedhartig wees… Oprah het eens gesê: “Every day is your past and every day is your future.” Dit is nogal ’n goeie ding om in gedagte te hou. In hierdie woorde steek baie waarheid. Oor begin wat vriendskappe betref, oor begin wat familieverhoudings betref en selfs oor begin wat slegte gewoontes betref. Jy kan more dit verander. Al word ons weer so blitsvinnig in die ratwerk van die lewe vasgevang en doen so baie om net te oorleef (veral wat geld betref) is dit tog ’n lekker uitdaging om ’n nuwe seisoen of siklus in jou lewe tegemoet te gaan. ~ Deur Michelle Boshoff

Soms moet ek ’n paar plankies aanmekaar plak om ’n werkbare bord te kry en dan sit jy en wag dat die gom set. En as die dingetjie klaar is, wag jy vir die vernis om droog te word. En al jy koperhakies soek, hou almal dieselfde ou koppiehakie aan en niemand het L vormige hakies nie. Ai tog. So jy werk kort rukkies en sit en kyk hoe word die vernis droog vir lang rukke. Maar die aktiwiteit is lekker en dit is hoogs bevredigend om te sien hoe jou plannetjie vorm aanneem. Hopelik sal ek genoeg voorraad kan bou dat ek eersdaags ook by die vlooimark kan gaan uitstal! In the Set Subject section Sarita Ahlers, a grade seven pupil, was the winner with her striking photo. In the Open section Lani Visser was again the winner with her beautiful photo. In the monochrome (Black & White) section the winner was also Lani Visser. The next meeting will be held on 10 February and will be a practical class and anyone who got new cameras for Christmas and would like to know how they work can attend. Continued from page 1 A group of parents contacted the newspaper last week. It was stressed again that the road is not even useable anymore. A big number of the children are hostel residents, but there are children who attend daily and go home in the afternoon, as well as the teachers. The busses that pick them up on Fridays can hardly drive all the way through anymore. It is not only Estralita that is affected but hundreds of children from Skhila Secondary use this road to walk to school and back. It is unsafe due to the long grass where anything or anyone can jump out, secondly the raw sewerage in the road that the vehicles have to drive through, pigs and cows graze lazily through the condoms, dirty nappies and plastic bags. This has also turned into a car wash where people come and park their cars on the bridge or ‘what is left of it,’ and wash their cars with the sewerage water. The authorities are aware of how bad the road is, but can Thaba Chweu Municipality urgently help out here, it is not safe anymore. A first step could be to send in a brush cutter and try to clear a path next to the road that is more useable for pedestrians. The potholes are monstrous. Given that it is children that need to get to their school safely makes this an urgent matter. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Ons toets Ford se Figo Blu FORD se Figo (wat “cool” beteken), is al vir baie jare hier beskikbaar en is immer gewild. Dié reeks is egter onlangs opgeknap en bied uitstekende waarde vir jou geld. Ek het die eerste 1.4 destyds getoets en moet sê die nuwe 1.5 drie-silinder maak hope meer krag. Die motor is ook ruimer. Die Blu is ’n nuwe toevoeging tot die reeks en volg basies die Trend spesifikasievlak. Die reeks Figo’s bestaan uit intree Ambiente en Trend in sedan spesifikasie (groter bagasiebak) en uit Ambiente, Trend, Trend Auto, Blu en die topspesifikasie Titanium in luikrug formaat. Pryse wissel tussen sowat R 195 000 tot R 228 000 vir die een met alles in wat oop- en toemaak. Die Blu is beskikbaar teen R 212 900. Die Titanium het ’n groot raakskerm vermaaklikheidsisteem, ses lugsakke, klimaatbeheer, trurat kamera en ’n rits ander kenmerke. Die ander modelle het almal lugversorging, Ford Audio met My Ford Dock vir jou foon, elektriese ruite, lugsakke, ABS, sentrale sluit, agterste misligte en voorste misligte op meeste modelle. Oor die reeks is drie tipes wiele in 14 en 15 duim beskikbaar en die Blu kom met 15 duim swart allooiwiele. Die spaarwiel is volgrootte staal. Daar is twee bekleedsel keuses en ses bakkleure beskikbaar in die reeks. Die Blu kom in wit met blou aksente op strategiese plekke en ’n swart dak. Baie mooi. Daar is ook blou aksente binne op al die deure en ’n mooi Blu geborduurde logo op die voorste sitplekke. Albei sonskerms het smukspieëltjies en buitespieëls is elektries op die voorste (A) deurpilaar verstelbaar. Sitplekke is gemaklik en daar is soveel beenspasie voor dat ’n reus met lang bene en arms gemaklik kan sit. Met normale verstelling is agterste beenspasie baie goed. Die stuurwiel en sitplekgordel ankerpunte is op en af verstelbaar. Die driesilinder 1.5 liter enjin is ’n juweel. Dit maak 88 kW en 150 Nm se wringkrag. Hierdie is nie intreemotor syfers nie en mens kan dit voel. Dié Ford trek en loop soos ’n bom. Teen harde versnelling is die tipiese driesilinder grom duidelik hoorbaar. Verbruiksyfers behoort heel goed te wees, aangesien daar genoeg wringkrag is dat jy nie hoef terug te skakel vanaf vyfde rat teen ’n bult nie. Van enjingrom onder versnelling gepraat, teen selfs hoë snelhede is die Figo doodstil binne. Die kajuit en bagasiebak is ruim en die motor voel werklik groter as ’n intreevlak motor. Ek het dié Ford op die Dullstroompad geneem en ’n stil deel gesoek met min verkeer en slaggate. Teen 120 km/u in vyfde toer die enjin rustig teen 3 300 opm en net ’n raps oor die 4 000 opm teen 160, sonder dat die enjin enigsinds hard werk. Dit voel nooit besig nie. Die lang ratverhoudings sal ook bydra tot goeie brandstofverbruik. Veerstelsel en remme is skitterend en alle kontroles werk lekker lig. Die Figo is rigtingvas op spoed en die kragstuur het perfekte gewig op spoed en is baie lig in die dorp wanneer mens parkeer. Ek moet eerlik sê dat ek gedink het die Figo is ’n intreevlak jongmens motor. Maar dit is veel meer. Dit voel “volwasse”. As studentemotor het dit al die veiligheidseienskappe wat nodig is en dit behoort ’n student nog baie jare na universiteit groot vreugde te verskaf. Mahindra Pic Up now in automatic

MAHINDRA South Africa has added four self-shifting variants to its Pik Up range, offering the new S11-badged double-cab models with a six-speed automatic transmission. Interestingly, South Africa is the first country in the world to receive the new automatic versions of the bakkie. The local arm of the Indian firm has mated its new six-speed automatic gearbox to the familiar 2,2-litre mHawk turbodiesel unit, which churns out 103 kW and 320 N.m. The new gearbox is offered on 4x2 and 4x4 variants, either in S11 guise or flagship S11 Karoo form. The S11 is a new trim level that slots in at the very top of the range, above the existing S6 and S10 models. All S11-badged bakkies feature a fresh grille design, tweaked headlamps and updated foglamps. In addition to the design changes up front, the S11 Pik Up features colour-coded side mirrors (with integrated indicators) and a reversing camera (a first for the range), along with a new seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system (with navigation) and automatic climate control. Karoo models furthermore gain special decals, a black nudge bar, a black styling bar, "off-road-ready" alloys and a roller-deck system covering the rubberised load bay. “South Africa is the first country in the world to officially launch the allnew Pik Up automatic, which is only fitting, since it was the test bed for this model. There has been an overwhelming demand for an automatic transmission in our bakkie range, and we believe we have the perfect answer with the S11 and S11 Karoo AT,” said Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

Onder elke kategorie was die fabrieksgeboude spesiale renvoertuie en ook verskillende klasse vir standaard voertuie, petrol, diesel en 4x2 en 4x4. Die tragiese dood van voormalige Dakar wenner Paulo Conqalves na ’n ernstige val in trajek 7, het ’n demper op die veldren geplaas. Baie voertuie het in die duine gerol. Dié jaar se terrein was besonder straf. ’n Mens dink dit is net sand woestyn in Arabië. Dit is weliswaar so, maar daar is berge en gebiede wat net uit klip en rotse bestaan, wat chaos met bande veroorsaak het. Dit is woeste wêreld dié. Wat die motors betref het die Mini’s en Toyotas domineer. Die meeste van die Toyotas word in Suid Afrika deur Gazoo Racing gebou.
