F there is one man that can attest to the saying, there is nothing dull about Dullstroom, it is Vernon Kruger (51). He is trying to break the Guinness World Record for a man staying in a barrel up a pole in none other than our neighbouring town, Dullstroom. He broke the record 22 years ago and after some personal problems and contemplation he decided to do it again. Vernon settled into his eight-storey-high home on November 14. The pole is 25 metres high (eight floors) and the wine barrel is 1 100 millimetres high, 725 millimetres wide at the top, 870 millimetres wide in the centre, and 500 litres in volume. He is aiming to stay there for the duration of 67 days or more. Because his previous record, 22 years ago, was 67 days and 14 minutes. Earlier this week a professional team with a specialised climber had to be summoned, when the rope that is used to get bedding and all other supplies to Vernon in the barrel got stuck in a metal bracket that holds the staywires in place, all efforts to get it dislodged was to no avail. Finally after a few hours and in the pouring rain late last night the climber reached the stay wire bracket half way up the pole and managed to dislodge the rebel rope. What started out as a minor problem turned out to be a rather expensive ordeal. He is facing all the challenges of elements like rain, sun and storms. The community and restaurants of Dullstroom makes sure that he is well looked after. “Without the village it wouldn't be possible,” says Annette van Zyl, one of the cocoordinators, and the owner of a local butchery. “The whole town is looking after him, making sure he has food and water and everything. So without Dullstroom, he wouldn't be up there.” Restaurants are taking it in turns to provide meals. Local farmer Ian Jones provided a tent at the base of the pole, where Kruger's

Kruger's toilet is a black pipe that snakes its way down the length of the pole into a nearby septic tank. Considering the altitude of Dullstroom and the height of the pole, this is probably currently the longest long drop in the world.. Children's Home. Both of these are accredited non-profit organisations that do good work for the community and the people in their care. They are open throughout the year and are in need to this support to look after those in their care by providing food, shelter and other necessities. The SAVF Belfast Children's Home was opened in 1996 and takes care of over 200 children who are in need of the care and support the home provides. The Epilepsy Center's mission is to
"provide shelter and protection in the care facilities and address the special needs of people who are unable to function within their own facilities and communities." Follow Vernon's journey on Facebook under the page name 'Up the Pole in Dullstroom'. He will be there for the next few weeks if everything goes to plan, and welcomes all the support he can get to help these charities, and of course to break the Guinness World Record.

Dit lyk dus nie goed nie, veral in ag genome dat 2018 ook ’n baie swak reënjaar was. Hierdie lesings is geneem langs die waterwerke in Prellerstraat. Die Dorpsrivier en Sterkspruit deur die dorp wat die Spekboom voer na Burgersfort vloei byna glad nie meer nie. Die situasie met die Lydenburg Dorpsdam, Kwena en Ohrigstaddam is kommerwekkend. Father Christmas told us confidentially that he is making a special trip to Katoen in White River, Soli Deo-Gloria Care Centre and Paradise camp in Lydenburg on the 24th and 25th of December to deliver presents to all the kids who live there. Of course there are very well behaved kids in Brondal and Magalela squatter camps, who must also expect a visit from the bearded man in red over the Festive Season. Not sure who is the most excited, Father Christmas or the kids.

Op 11 Desember 2001 het die families van vier mense se lewe onherroeplik verander. Destyds was Kol. Marnus van der Wal die kommandant van die Lydenburg Kommando. Hy en honderde vrywilligers het mense uit die water gered en uit hul huise wat oorstroom is. Maar die grootste tragedie was die dood van Maria Elizabeth Potgieter, Petro Kruger, Riaan de Wit, Dewaldt de Wit en Marinnette McCarthy (wat op 26 Augustus 2001 gebore is). Vir hul families en vriende is dit nodeloos om te sê, steeds een van die grootste rampe wat hulle kon getref het. Maria Elizabeth Potgieter en haar man was van Witbank en het in die Uitspan Karavaanpark gebly terwyl hy hier gewerk het. Sy is in die karavaan oorval deur die water. Dit is ’n tragedie wat nooit vergeet sal word nie.. Dit is steeds die algemene opinie dat 'n wolkbreuk in die berge bo die Lydenburgdam deels die oorsaak van die vloed was en tussen 75 en 100 huise was onder water. Klere van 'n plaaslike boutique in Viljoenstraat in so ver as Burgersfort uit die rivier gehaal. Die vloed is regdeur die dorp en op sommige plekke kon vir jare daarna die opdrifsels en bewyse gesien word van waar die water was.

A typical example of failed African leadership Mr Pompie Ledwaba from Mashishing writes: In a world that makes us fear that mankind has lost the ability to be humane, it is so refreshing to witness or indulge in moments of kindness. Indeed, kindness is the oil that removes friction out of our lives. The empty anxiety or hatred at the appointment of our very own competent and equally educated white South African is unfair and extremely foolish. The resurgence of race politics by a few bourgeois claiming that his appointment is tantamount to insulting transformation is completely absurd and an accusation without any substance. What type of dawn that never becomes midday? Dr Oliver Tambo, once said: truth be told even though it coincides with that of the enemy. Excellent, Dr Oliver Tambo, a great revolutionary and a leader par excellence. All African state owned enterprises; that is Eskom, PRASA and SAA, under the leadership of my own black brothers and sisters are in a state of complete bankruptcy in the name of transformation. The demise of those SOE'S because of unbridled greed from my very own black brothers and sisters in positions of power, the end product is loss of jobs in the awful name of retrenchments. Therefore, it is not in the realm of possibility that these SOE'S will ever again find their financial footing. Ethical leadership demands integrity, accountability and respect for the rule of law. On behalf of my beloved country I bemoan the lack of consequence management, hence
saluting the organisation called OUTA for taking a firm stance against former embattled CEO of SAA to court in order to declare her a delinquent board member of any institution in South Africa for the next seven years, because your ANC government is afraid to punish evil doers. The fundamental belief that our ANC government in inherently corrupt and cannot govern is a film that is there for our people to see. As both black and white South Africans, we must take a firm stance that cadre deployment by the highest number of our illiterate people has put the economy of the country and that of the continent on the brink of collapse, therefore, people must be appointed and promoted as per their academic qualifications. In simpler practical terms, Mr Andre de Ruyter as the new CEO for Eskom is a brave decision taken by Mr Pravin Gordhan and the esteemed selection committee. I hate with all my heart the demon of race dividing my people, causing friction in both black and white neighbourhoods. The Freedom Charter eloquently states that South Africa belongs to everybody who lives in it, either be they pink or yellow. Therefore, all people deserve equal opportunities in the economy of their own country. May the good Lord revive the rebuked fig tree type of municipalities like Thaba Chweu and others, which are typical examples of failed African leadership. A municipality that is in a state of disrepair.

Baie mense bevraagteken die werklike geboortedatum van Jesus, maar dit is nie die punt nie. Dit gaan oor ons as mense se dankbaarheid oor Sy koms. Baie mense beskou die gebruike rondom Kersfees as boos en hulle vier dit nie meer nie. Hulle het ’n punt oor hierdie gebruike en simbole beet. Wat het ’n kersboom met liggies met

Om die gebou is groot vangnette vasgemaak sodat dit die gemors kan afkeer wat op my pad kom. My glasverdieping wys ook dat ek kans sien vir baie. Want glas is seker die stof wat die vinnigste kan breek. Ek besef dus dat enige iets kan verkeerd gaan, sonder dat ek voorbereid was daarop. As jy op die boonste verdieping staan is daar ’n klein stukkie groen en blou, so groot soos jou handpalm. Met ’n verkyker sien jy dis eintlik ’n swembad en ’n stukkie groen gras met ’n palmboom. Ek sit op ’n reuse sonstoel, teug aan mineraalwater en geurige seekos is op ’n tafeltjie langs my uitgepak. Die laaste stuk legkaart is ’n gesprekkiesblokkie (’n gewone speechbubble). In daardie blokkie skryf jy vir jouself ’n motiveringsboodskap. Myne sê: ‘Myself', sê tog vir die mense van Hoorhiersô-land dat hulle moet skouer aan die wiel sit. As hulle nou hierdie kakofonie klaar ontsyfer moet hulle aangaan met die werk en nie meer so lui wees nie.’ Ons het die hele Kersvakansie om legkaart te bou. Ons kan intussen roomys eet en al die afskeidspartytjies bywoon. Daardeur weet ons ten minste dit is somer en dat Kersfees amper hier is. Ek is nogal agterdogtig oor al hierdie gebruike. Dit maak my bekommerd. As jy natuurlik nie ’n Christen is nie, nou ja, dan is jy op jou eie. Maar as jy een is, is jou verwerping van die blydskap (Kersfees) rondom die koms van Jesus dan nie ’n groter sonde nie? Ek kan nie vir jou preek nie, want ek weet te min. En ouens slimmer as ek sal vir my allerlei redes, teksverse uit verband en motiverings gee na die een of die ander kant toe. Weet hulle regtig meer? Dan is hulle geseënd. In my huis is daar nie ’n kersboom nie, maar ons is oneindig dankbaar oor die koms van die Seun. So, ek is jammer as ek op jou parade piepie, dit is maar net my siening.

Volg en gehoorsaam die amnestieproses WEES versigtig vir die sogenaamde wapen amnestie. Mense met wapens waarvan die lisensies verstryk het, is steeds die eienaars van wapens wat voorheen wettig gelisensieer was. Indien jy die wapen wil behou, moet dit nie inhandig nie, aldus verskeie kenners van die organisasie GOSA (Gun Owners of South Africa). Vir so ’n hernuwingslisensie om te slaag, moet jy reeds oor n geldige of nuwe bevoegdheidsertifikaat beskik. So ’n aansoek kan vier maande duur. Daarna kan jy die wapen inhandig, waarna dit vir ballistiese toetse gestuur gaan word, ’n proses wat nog ses maande kan duur. Teen daardie tyd is die amnestie lankal verby en sal jou aansoek om lisensiehernuwing waarskynlik te laat wees en nie slaag nie. Die wapen sal verbeurd verklaar word en jy verloor jou aanvanklike belegging. In die wet is dit absurd. Indien die wapen voorheen in jou naam gelisensieer was en jy dit deur ’n wettige proses aangekoop het is dit jou eiendom.

istorian Charles van Onselen has slammed "arrogant and poorly briefed nationalists" for the neglect and wrongful commemoration of the death of Mozambican miners who perished in a rail accident 70 years ago in 1949. The commemoration took place at Emgwenya (previously Waterval Boven) on November 16, 2019, under the auspices of the Mpumalanga Department of Sport, Culture and Recreation. And, according to Van Onselen, not only is the provincial government commemorating the incident on the wrong day, it also has the number of deaths wrong and has excluded the memory of the dead white train driver. The department is commemorating the deaths of 63 mineworkers who died on November 16, 1949. How arrogant nationalists are soiling our history and heritage according to Van Onselen, whose recently published book The Night Trains investigates the role of Mozambican mineworkers on the Witwatersrand, 62 mineworkers died on November 15, 1949. According to a departmental briefing document, the commemoration at one of two remembrance sites was attended by numerous political dignitaries from South Africa and Mozambique and included a wreath-laying ceremony, as well as a reception for guests. The two sites - one a mass grave where deceased miners were buried and the other the

At the mass grave, the marble panel with the names of the deceased came loose from the plinth, fell to the floor and was shattered. Both sites are also overgrown with weeds and bush, and only received a facelift before the annual commemoration. Van Onselen believes commemoration events like these have been hijacked by politicians with no regard for historical accuracy or honesty about events and those who were involved. And he is particularly scathing about the national and provincial government's lack of research to determine the real facts of the incident. He says government efforts to preserve "heritage" will always fail. "It is opportunistically embraced by ignorant and / or semi-literate nationalists who are unable or unwilling to commission or undertake the necessary in-depth historical research that might back efforts focused on the potential of tourism." The accident happened on a treacherous railway track outside of Emgwenya (then Waterval Boven) when the train taking miners back to Mozambique from the Witwatersrand derailed, killing 63 men. The miners were part of the migrant labour system which provided cheap labour to South Africa's mining industry during the boom years in the early part of last century. According to Van Onselen, returning miners were often physically broken and psychologically scarred after being discarded by the big mining companies on the Rand. The Waterval Boven monument therefore carries enormous significance, which makes the authorities' neglect shameful, he says. "Waterval Boven is no historical backwater. It is located at the midpoint of the umbilical cord that pumped life through the political economy of the region as a whole. The train disaster wasn't merely an 'accident' it offers a painful and poignant illustration of the systemic, exploitative and racist nature of the South African mining industry in the eras of segregation and later, apartheid," Van Onselen says. If you are one of those Ford Everest owners who like driving to remote parts of Lesotho or Botswana on vacation, there’s an upgrade which might be of interest. Ford’s Australian division, which is very similar in marketing strategy and product to Ford South Africa, has released an accessories pack for Everest. Cleverly named, this new accessory pack is called the ‘Basecamp’ and comprises some of those desirable adventure bits that you’d have to fit in your own time and inconvenience, at an aftermarket specialist. Ford’s product people will now save adventurous Everest owners all the trouble of comparing price and specification and offer the kit they need, as a factory option. The most pronounced component within this Everest Basecamp kit is its snorkel. Very much the default aftermarket 4x4 adventure accessory, snorkels are crucial – and in a way that many misunderstand. Although the snorkel does allow for better water crossing performance, it also has a vital airfiltration function. Drawing air from roofline height, instead of at the grille level, means that in a dusty convoy you are absorbing a bit less contaminated airflow. Air rushing at speed, even a meter higher than the at the grille entry point, is also a touch cooler, as the peak radiation point will always be closest to the road surface you are driving on. Beyond the snorkel, there is also a Ford bonnet protector and a net 76 mm diameter nudge bar, framed by an LED light bar. Nudge bars might mess with your Everest’s aero a touch, but they serve as a valid bumper and radiator protector if you do have a low-speed collision offroad. Atop the Basecamp Everest is a heavy-duty roof rack with Pioneer platform, to allow safe camping for two, far away from ground level. The Everest Basecamp accessories package is completed by a Sunseeker awning, to further enhance its camping appeal. Australian market pricing for the Basecamp kit is an estimated R20 000. cars.co.za

MAZDA says demand for its new Skyactiv-X engine in Europe is “much higher than expected” despite it commanding a premium over conventional petrol and diesel powertrains. Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Mazda Europe CEO Yasuhiro Aoyama said customer interest was “encouraging”. “Since we launched the engine, we are seeing a very encouraging feedback: 60 percent of the orders for the Mazda3 are currently for cars equipped with the Skyactiv-X engine, as well as 45 percent of orders for the Mazda CX-30 crossover," Aoyama-san said. The Skyactiv-X engine is considered the world’s first commercial petrol unit to combine the spark ignition of a petrol engine with the compression ignition of a diesel. In June 2019, the Japanese firm confirmed the European-spec Mazda3 fitted with the 2,0-litre, four-cylinder Skyactiv-X powerplant offered 132 kW at 6 000 r/min and 224 N.m at 3 000 r/min. Claimed fuel consumption (on the latest WLTP cycle), meanwhile, would come in at 5,4 L/100 km with CO2 emissions of 96 g/km, depending on transmission and wheel size. In July 2019, the head of Mazda Southern Africa confirmed to CARmag.co.za that while the brand would like to offer the compression-ignition petrol engine locally, the country’s fuel quality was preventing it from doing so. Meanwhile MAZDA executives says they are “exploring” various powertrain options for the next-generation MX-5. Speaking to Autocar, research and development chief Ichiro Hirose said the little sportscar had to remain light, regardless of what sort of powertrain it employed. “The lightweighting and compact size are essential elements of MX-5, so even if we apply electrification, we have to make sure it really helps to achieve the lightweighting of the vehicle,” Hirose-san said. Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s head of global design, added the fifth generation of the MX-5 needed to fit buyers’ preferences, even if they were changing. “The preference of people who enjoy driving sportscars might be changing, so we need to think about what direction society is going,” Maeda-san said. “We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options. “I don’t have the answer now but we need to make a vehicle that people can own without worrying that they are not being eco-friendly,” he explained. Towards the end of 2017, Mazda quietly discontinued the MX-5 roadster in South Africa, but interestingly chose to retain the RF variant – available exclusively with a six-speed automatic gearbox – of the rear-wheel-drive sportscar. But in July 2019, Mazda Southern Africa’s managing director told us the local arm of the Japanese firm would “probably” offer the next-generation MX-5 with a manual as well as an automatic transmission. As a reminder, the MX-5 RF (which stands for “Retractable Fastback”) sold locally is powered by a 118 kW/200 N.m naturally aspirated 2,0-litre petrol engine, sending drive to the rear axle via the aforementioned six-speed auto. New crossover vehicles for 2020 IF a budget hatchback is too small for your needs then perhaps a larger budget crossover will be the perfect fit for your lifestyle. The budget end of the new car market is both important and lucrative for manufacturers, especially in South Africa, as it offers an opportunity to unlock potential revenue where cash-strapped buyers are eager to purchase their first new car. While budget cars such as the Renault Kwid and Datsun Go continue to grow in popularity, there’s also a growing demand for budget crossovers that offer not only a higher ground clearance (which suits local conditions) but also for more space and passenger-carrying capacity. Here are 4 new budget crossovers headed for South Africa next year! Datsun Cross Ever since Datsun was relaunched in South Africa in 2014, the brand has won many hearts with its Go and Go+ offerings which continue to sell well on a monthly basis. However, Datsun is looking to expand on its success by introducing the Go Cross to market in 2020. The Cross has a useful 200 mm ground clearance while plastic body cladding provides some rugged appeal. A 1.2-litre petrol engine with 58 kW and 104 Nm of torque is expected and comes mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. It also has an extra row of seats and can carry up to 7 passengers. Local pricing and specification will be revealed closer to launch. Ford Figo Freestyle Although its exact arrival has yet to be confirmed, we anticipate that the Figo Freestyle will make some waves when it arrives on local soil. Ford calls its latest Freestyle crossover a Compact Utility Vehicle (CUV) and it’s based on Ford’s entry-level Figo hatchback. Like the Figo, it’s produced at Ford's Indian plant in Sanand, Gujarat. In India, the Figo Freestyle is offered with a new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine with 71 kW and 120 Nm of torque. The familiar 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine producing 74 kW and 215 Nm also does service in the Freestyle and both engines are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. We will keep you updated as soon Renault Triber Based on a modified version of the CMF-A platform which underpins the popular Kwid, the Triber is a 7-seat crossover that will take aim at products such as Suzuki Ertiga, Honda BR-V and Toyota Avanza. The third row of seats are removable, however, and load capacity is claimed at 625 litres. Powering the Triber will be a tweaked version of Renault’s proven 1.0-litre, 3cylinder engine which offers 56 kW and 96 Nm of torque and comes paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox as well as an automated manual transmission. Pricing and specification details will be released closer to launch which takes place in February 2020. Suzuki S-Presso The forthcoming S-Presso budget car from Suzuki is smaller than the Ignis and boasts a ride height of 180 mm which will prove useful on gravel roads. Powering the S-Presso is a naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre engine, with 3 cylinders, which is good for 50 kW and 90 Nm. combined wellness program took place at the Glencore Eastern Mines group giving their employees time to have fun and obtain wellness checks at the same time. Magareng Mine held their Wellness Day on 19 November, Helena Mine on 27 November and Thorncliffe Mine was the most recent on 2 December. It was a great attendance by the employees and it included 1 500 permanent and contractors across the three days. The total units of blood donated at were 283 units (78 units at Helena, 80 units at
Magareng and 125 units at Thorncliffe. The activities included the following 1. Wellness (Blood pressure/Blood sugar and Cholesterol screening) 2. TB screening & HIV know your status campaign 3. Fitness advice 4. Dental and Vision screening 5. Dietary and nutrition assessments 6. SANBS – Blood donation 7. CANSA Spray-a-thon 8.
