Vacations have always been about rejuvenation, whether through enhancing the mind,

body, or spirit. Many destinations have focused on a singular one of these goals as their main mission. Urban destinations with rich histories, like London or Paris, appeal to visitors interested in learning with their world class museums and cultural attractions. Beach resorts in far-flung places like Bali or Hawaii capture those who need to disconnect from their stressful lives by relaxing in the sunshine. And world heritage sites like Angkor Wat or Machu Picchu are sought after by people in search of spiritual meaning through a connection with past cultures. Some destinations, such as Las Vegas, have even attempted to replicate these global destinations in the form of themed attractions, bringing loosely interpreted replicas of Paris, New York, or the Pyramids to those who desire a distilled version of these places without the intellectual depth that goes along with learning about what makes them so interesting to begin with.

The most successful destinations of the future, however, will provide visitors with an authentic experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere. As the distances between us become smaller and the far corners of the earth are accessible to more people, travelers are seeking experiences that are unique to the region they are visiting. To thrive, destinations must appeal to visitors with higher expectations through a diversity of memorable experiences that stimulate the mind, body, and spirit equally. This combination is especially important for a destination to retain its value over time. Critical to the long term viability of a destination is its ability to inspire by providing a diversity of experiences that visitors feel compelled to return.

In addition to providing a variety of experiences that allow for the mind to expand and the body to recharge, the destinations of the future must also be healthy – for both humans and for the environment. As Mahatma Ghandi once said, “It is health that is the real wealth, not pieces of gold and silver.” Successful destinations of the future will be guided by this principle, creating an overall environment that is beneficial to people and the planet. New destinations must focus on best practices to reduce carbon by limiting dependence on fossilfuel based sources of energy in buildings and for transportation. They must provide ample access to nature, with landscapes that protect sensitive environments or restore damaged ecologies for people and wildlife to enjoy. Looking forward, I believe that the destinations of the future, when planned, designed, and managed thoughtfully, will create places that enrich the lives of their users and leave the earth in better condition for future generations to enjoy.

Location Longjing, Jilin Province, China

The project is located in Longjing City, Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin province. It has a total planned area of 189 hectares, with a total planned construction area of 121 hectares. Its geographical location is great, located within 5km distance from both the centers of Longjing City and Yanbian City, while it is next to the provincial highway S202 and Maoer Shan National Forest Park in the north and facing Hailan River in the south.

After the preliminary analysis, the designers believed the project is not only a project of Longjing City. Geographically speaking, it is also a project of the Greater Yanji area. From the planning perspective, they did not consider it as a ordinary suburban project, but as a leading project defining an urban strategic functioning area that will enhance the value of the city in the future. From the view of planning, the project is not a regular new town or new district, but a distinctive international comprehensive zone. Therefore, they try to create a charming international cultural town with a deep Korean culture, promoting Lonjing City into an era of cultural consumption to usher in a golden age of cultural tourism.

The project covers an area of 3,133,333m2, sitting in the Five Dragon Scenic Spots, Jiyuan City, Henan Province, which is a comprehensive tourism project on a large scale and with distinct specialties. The project encompasses abundant natural resources, like mountains, ston es, valley, creek, spring, agriculture lands, beach, forests and so on, and considerable historical and cultural resources also belong here, such as the Huacheng Temple Ruins, Ancient Road of Cao Wei , the birthplace of the tune of “Ooze the Spring of the Garden”, the ruins of Princess Qinshui, etc.

This project conforms to the green, low carbon, environment friendly architectural design concept. Through utilizing the differences of mountain elevation and winding and zigzag rivers and by making full use of the terrain , this project can be divided into six groups, that is, a SPA town, mountain boutique hotel, hot spring culture, Princess Qinshui Park, temple and Mountain Golf.

Hot spring thematic hotel is launched in Phase One of the project, with about 400 rooms, located in the SPA culture segment, facing the the Qin River which is shaped in Chinese character “JI” and with the Taihang Mountains on the back. It blends a courtyard town building with the hotel lobby to create a leisure space for reception, catering and shopping. It invites the Qin River into the lobby, greenery grinning, and water gurgling, similar to the breath-taking scenery of the Princess Qinshui Garden of former times.

该项目占地约 313hm2，位于河南省济源市五龙 口风景名胜区内，是河南省内颇具规模和特色的旅游 区开发项目。项目中山、石、谷、溪、泉、田、滩、 林等各类自然资源形态十分丰富，还有化城寺遗迹、 曹魏古栈道、沁园春词牌发源地、沁水公主园遗址等 多个历史文化资源。 建筑设计遵循绿色低碳、生态环保的设计理念， 通过对山地高差错落、河道蜿蜒曲折等地形的充分利 用，将项目分成温泉小镇、山地精品酒店、温泉文化 区、沁水公主园、化城寺及山地高尔夫六大组团。 温泉主题酒店是首期启动项目，约 400 间客房， 位于温泉文化组团，背靠太行山山脉，面向“几”字 形的沁河。设计将中原宅院小镇建筑风格融入酒店大 堂，并作为接待、餐饮、购物等休闲空间使用。沁河 河水被引入大堂，这里绿意盎然、流水淙淙，再现了 沁水公主园的美丽景色。

Located in Shenzhen, China, OCT Bay has a combined site area of approximately 1.25 square kilometers including equal parts new urban center and nature preserve. SWA provided both master planning and landscape architectural services for the entire site that is targeted towards creating public open space for the city that balances development and ecology. As a new urban cultural and entertainment destination, OCT Bay provides urban amenities, entertainment components, public plazas, park space, resort destinations, and ecological preserves. The 685,000 square meter wetland and nature preserve provides habitat for dozens of species, and is considered China’s only inner-city coast mangrove wetland. SWA’s design engages the public through an activity program defined by education, culture, entertainment and recreation.

Locally sourced materials, green technologies and sustainable practices were utilized to enhance the resource responsible goals established for the project. The site concept is based on an interaction with water - as a natural resource, aesthetic element, ecological system and conveyance amenity. The project has become a model for a successful approach to balanced mixed use project development in China.
