Opera House Linz has been laid out as an inwardly reposing building complex, clearly structured and yet manageable in spite of its enormous dimensions, impressive with its timeless modern classical orientation. Like a double colonnade the orthogonal structure consisting of white pre-cast concrete elements protectively encircles the house as a metaphoric curtain. With this architecturally artistic touch of outer layer, which is limitative and at the same time transparent, the building meets the demands for a cultural institution that is interwoven with city life. Where facade bays were to be closed, panels made of split Roman travertine have been inserted. The naturally split, beige surface has a soft texture in comparison with the smooth, white framework of reinforced concrete. All components behind the “stone curtain”, which refer to the building’s interior, are covered with a layer of patinated brass and together with the dark window frames constitute a formal unit. The attached upper storey is fitted with white prefabricated concrete panels, the surfaces of which are grooved and have been left rough. The glass facade of the main foyer is also fitted with vertical louvers; aside from their desired stylistic effect toward the outside, the elements made of perforated plate and set as swords in front of the façde also serve as protection against the sun in their unfolded state. 82

The pleasant shades of colour of the travertine panels and the dark hue of the brass patinas are also used as formal elements in the interior of the opera house. For the flooring in the entrance foyer “Architektur Consult” and “Archinauten” selected a polished, light Untersberg marble, which is also used on the stairs; the walls are of a dark, slightly reddish wood: Steam-heated acacia wood in louver form is used vertically as a semi-transparent room divider and partly superimposed on the wall in the main foyer and in the upper storey on the ceiling. Here also the floor is covered with wood, light oak floor boards. These materials run through into the auditorium; here, however, the shell with mat wood surfaces is contrasted by the balconies which exhibit a golden gleam. They are fitted with a smooth surface made of liquid metal, which is not designed with the classic gold plating but with a diffuse shimmer and has a deep glow in artificial light when reflected. The stairs of the interior access to the galleries in the auditorium are separated with a transparent room divider; small golden metal rods are stretched vertically from floor to ceiling and give the effect of a pearl curtain. This means that here also is a “curtain” as a design leitmotiv that stretches from the façde into the heart of the music theatre, the auditorium.
