Preface 序 言

Neo-classical Design in Architecture has had an extraordinary impact on architecture dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. Echoes of the Parthenon in Athens or the Pantheon in Rome are evident in the elements of this style. Neoclassical architecture expressed in symmetry and ornamentation is evident in many buildings of all scales. Embracing neo-classicism is one of many approaches to architectural design when the context is appropriate, and will certainly continue to be embodied in the urban fabric.

Approaching the 100th anniversary, San Francisco City Hall continues to inspire citizens and visitors alike on the importance of architecture and the role that buildings play in making places in the history of the city. Multiple generations gain a deep understanding for the city’s commitment to house the soul of the community. As the principal architect responsible for ensuring that the updates and improvements of this landmark building continue to serve the mission for the next 100 years, I am honored that nearly ten years following the completion of this project that it remains a San Francisco icon. The architectural language of Neo-classical design will continue to be enhanced as a key element in the larger National Register Landmark District that surrounds the building for decades to come. The language of Neo-classical style architecture will continue to be reinterpreted and cherished amongst a wide range of building types. I hope you enjoy this noteworthy edition in exploring Neo-classical style in architecture and design and the inspiration that it imparts in our global culture.

Clark Manus of Heller Manus Architects

Architect Robert Dame Designs Builder Christopher Sims Custom Homes Photographer Bruce Glass

The home was completed in 2005 in a suburban community of Houston, Texas in USA. The concept for this home is based on the Greek revival architectural style. Like Neoclassical architecture, it boasts a large symmetrically-shaped structure with tall columns that raise the full height of the home and a beautiful interior domed ceiling. The home's exterior is brick and the roof is slate. The home won the 2006 Texas Star Award for the Best Custom Kitchen in a home over $1 million and the 2006 Prism Award for the Best Custom Home over $2.5 million.

LOS ANGELES, USA

THE GRETZKY RESIDENCE, WESTLAKE, CALIFORNIA Architect Landry Design Group, Inc Photographer Erhard Pfeiffer

The white-trimmed, red brick Georgian manor house on the outskirts of Los Angeles, that looks as if it has been inexplicably transported from Virginia hunt country to Southern California, is the result of a shared vision of the original homeowners, Canadian-born hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and his wife, actress Janet Jones, for a residence on a high promontory overlooking a golf course and a bucolic lake. The house is approached along a lengthy driveway that runs beside the house, passing formal gardens and sculpted boxwood hedges. The main entry is a covered porte-cochere, facing a custom-designed iron fountain. The front door is flanked by a pair of Neo-classical stone urns, and illuminated by copper lanterns. Richard Landry designed the house on a Beaux Arts axis: all its rooms feed off of a central hall. The symmetry and balance of his design create a stately formality rarely seen in recent Californian architecture. The living

018

room features a series of Ionic columns molded of an ivory resin composite that create a visual link with the exterior of the house. The wood and onyx fireplace was custom-designed by Richard Landry. The floors throughout the house are a very dark walnut, and the walls are painted and glazed a creamy ivory that looks candlelit, even though the rooms are lighted by chandeliers or sconces of wrought iron and crystal or Murano glass. The rooms are grandly proportioned, with high ceilings, like their Beaux Arts inspirations. Richard Landry put a great deal of effort into the indoor/outdoor aspects of the house, designing one of his signature covered loggias overlooking the pool and gazebo, framed by Neo-classical columns, it is an inviting and informal space for the family to lounge or entertain. There is an open expanse of lawn suitable for games, and the formal gardens are balanced by play areas. There is a tennis court, a pool and a separate, private gym for the hockey great.

CHICAGO, USA

Architect Landry Design Group, Inc Photographer Erhard Pfeiffer

The estate, which the owners call Le Grand Reve (The Grand Dream), is approached by a limestone drive that wraps around a motor court composed of blue stone. In the center of the motor court is a lovely, playful fountain. Richard Landry and his team designed the residence, too, to express both formality and whimsy. Inside, rooms are organized on a classically symmetric Beaux Arts axis off the grand rotunda. This spectacular space is two-story high with ornamental moldings adorning the walls and ceilings. Wrought-iron handrails in the Parisian style lead the eye up the dual stairs. Above, a chandelier hangs from a Tiffany glass-lense skylight. A wide gallery on one side of the grand rotunda leads to the richly appointed living room and a gracious guest suite. At the end of this gallery is a solemn library with two sets of French doors that open to the front or rear of the property.

034

On the other side of the grand rotunda is an elegant dining room, illuminated by crystal chandeliers and modern cove lighting. Across the gallery is the warm and romantic great room, where a carved fireplace mantel is set against walls brushpainted and glazed for texture. From here, the gallery leads to a grouping of casual rooms. A soothing sitting room opens to the breakfast room, kitchen and keeping room. Upstairs, a skylight with a wrought-iron canopy crowns an oval vestibule. Double-stained wood doors open to the master suite, an elegant series of rooms embellished with medallions, festoons and other archetypal motifs made of decorative plaster. French doors lead to a terrace that extends the length of the house and overlooks the landscape. Below, a sunroom projects beyond the rear facade, allowing for windows on three sides to frame views of the expansive lawn, gardens and pool.

The clients wanted an Italian, Neo-classical style villa with a sweeping gallery and salon arrangement of rooms. However, the original architect delivered a late-modern, ranch style house for a typical family with two children. Since the original footprint and shear walls could not be changed, all of the architecture was engineered at the back-end by creating very unusual doors, doorways and cabinetry. The result was a set of Neo-classical spaces of connected salons. The most important point of this house is the barrel-vaulted skylight that runs the length of the gallery: The east gallery is the public area. The gallery has matched openings framed by 4.27 meters columns and pilasters:

062

The north opening goes into the Family room and kitchen; The south opening goes into the LR and DR. The staircase/gazebo is the semi-public area. The west gallery is the private area. The west gallery contains a series of matched arched openings creating a progression of space that evokes the Gallery of Mirrors from the Palace of Versailles. The second most important point of this house is entire project conforms to Universal Access Design – all to the house is completely wheel chair accessible. The clients intend for this house to be their last building project and to live in it for the rest of their lives.

Haleh Design creates comprehensive and considered programs for magnificent timeless homes that speak of restraint and polished elegance. The ordered symmetry of the grand foyer conveys an overarching sense of simplicity. Murals surrounding the 10 meter-high dome depict allegories of the four elements: earth, wind, fire and water. The curve of the sweeping stairway combines a solid mahogany handrail and hand wrought-iron balusters accented with 18K gold leaf. Column capitals and cornices are edged in 18K gold leaf. Inset wall panels in silk add warmth.

A Lalique Cactus table accented with a Lalique Angelique vase anchors the space. The floor is rare Italian Porto gold marble highlighted with honey onyx. The grand salon emphasizes architectural detailing while embracing an intimate arrangement of furniture to maintain proper conversational proportion and scale. The rich textiles add layered texture and luxury while embodying comfort and beauty.

Interior Architect Brian O’Keefe Architect, P.C. Interior Designer Marjorie Shushan Photographer Liz Ordonoz

This project was to design the architectural interiors for a stunning new 3,252 square meters Classical designed home in Miami, Florida that was to look as if it had been around for generations. The inspirations for the interiors of this home were the wonderful villas and estates of Barbados done by such notable designers as Oliver Messel. The floor plan of the home is very classical and symmetrical with wonderfully proportioned rooms and windows. The exterior of the house is clad with a combination of beautiful island coral stone and stucco which are continued into the Main Entry Stair Hall and various Loggias.

114

The materials used are all natural stones and woods such as Mahogany, Butternut, White Oak, and Walnut with expert custom stains and finishes applied by master skilled artisans. The moldings and paneling are inspired from classical design examples and in some cases such as the crown moldings are adapted to hide the modern systems such as air conditioning as well as speakers. The wonderful interiors by Marjorie Shushan include beautiful paint treatments, furniture, antiques, fabrics, and accessories achieve the Owner's goal of making the house feel comfortable and inviting, and not ostentatious.

This project was started in 2007 as a completely new project when the previous structure was taken down. The design inspiration for the overall project was French Beaux Arts, and Louis XVI style. The general challenge, which at the end of the project was not a challenge at all, was to give a very French feeling and flair to the whole house inside and outside. On the basement floor, there is an exercise room with a small pool, a chef and staff kitchen, and a staff apartment. On the first floor there is a formal library, a formal entrance hall, and a guest apartment with two rooms and one living room. On the second floor there is a formal drawing room, a formal dining room, and a kitchen with a family sitting room/dining room. Lastly, the third floor has a master bedroom, a

master sitting room, bathrooms and closets, as well as a guest bedroom. The color scheme throughout the house is soft French colors, mostly blues and greens. All the wood panelings were sculpted and fabricated in France, as was all the metal work. Painters using old world techniques were also brought in from France. The furniture is almost exclusively French Louis XV and Louis XVI. The clients have an amazing collection of the 18th century English and French silver as well as Fantin Latour paintings. In respect to the 18th century French style, the entire house turned out amazingly well.
