ALARM SYSTEM Your vehicleis fittedwith a sophisticated anti-theftalarmand engineimmobilisation system. In orderto combinemaximumvehicle securitywith minimuminconvenience, you are advisedto gain a fullunderstandingof the alarmsystemby thoroughlyreadingthis sectionof the handbook.

Featuresof the alarm system Perimeterprotection: This partof the alarm systemprotectsthe doors, bonnet and taildooragainstunauthorisedentry- the alarm sounding if any one of theseaperturesis opened without the alarmfirstbeing disarmed. Interiorprotection: Alsoknown as volumetric protection, thispartof the systemprotectsthe spaceinsidethe vehicle. If movementwithin the passengercompartment,or intrusions through the windowsor sunroofaredetected, the alarmwillsound. Engine immobilisation: The engineis immobilisedelectronicallywheneverthe alarm systemis armed.Even if the alarmhas not been armed, engineimmobilisationwilloccur automaticallythirtysecondsafterthe driver’s door is opened, or fiveminutesafterthe starterswitchis turnedto position’0’. In practice, thismeansit is virtually impossibleto leaveyour Defenderunattended without the enginebeing immobilised. ARMINGTHE ALARM

WARNING If a passengeror animal is to be left inside the vehicle,or if a window or sunroofis to be left open, interiorprotectionmust be disabled.Referto ’Interiorprotection’ before arming the alarm.

To armthe alarm, aimthe handsetat the Defenderand pressthe righthand button (PADLOCKSYMBOL).Providedallthe doors and otheraperturesareclosed, the direction indicatorlightswillflashthreetimesto confirmthat the alarmis armed.Allthe securityfeaturesdescribedpreviouslywillbe active. Oncearmed, the alarmwillsound if a door or the bonnet is opened, or if movementis detectedinsidethe vehicle.

Disarmingthe alarm Withinrangeof the vehicle, brieflypressthe left(PLAIN)button on the handset;the directionindicatorlightswillflashonce to indicatethat the alarmhas been disarmedand the enginere-mobilised.

NOTE: In some territories, the interiorlights willilluminatewhen the alarmis disarmed. If the directionindicatorsfail to flash when the alarm is armed: This indicatesthat a door or the bonnet is not fullyclosed,in whichcasethe alarmwillstill be partiallyarmedand the engine immobilised, but interiorprotectionwillnot be active. Oncethe open door or bonnet is closed, the directionindicatorswillflashthreetimesand the alarmwillfullyarmas described previously. If the alarm sounds: The vehiclehorn and alarmsirenwillsound continuouslyfor 30 secondsand then switch off. The horn and sirencan be triggeredup to threetimes. To silencethe alarm, presseitherhandset button. If the handsetis inoperative, the alarm can only be disarmedby enteringthe emergencykeyaccesscode (see’Engine immobilisationoverride’). Anti-theft alarm indicatorlight A REDindicatorlighton the instrumentpanel indicatesthe statusof the alarmsystem. When the alarmis armedsuccessfully, the lightFLASHESrapidly.After10 seconds, the lightadjuststo a slowerfrequency, and continuesflashingas an anti-theftdeterrent untilthe alarmis disarmed. If the lightfailsto illuminateduringthe rapid flashphase, thisindicatesa ’mislock’(door or bonnet not fullyclosedor keyin starter switch). If thisoccurs, the indicatorlightwill stillflashat the slowerfrequencyas an anti-theftdeterrent. If the lightilluminatescontinuously, this indicatesthat the enginehas immobilised passively(see’Engineimmobilisation’).

Interiorprotection Interiorprotectionis activatedautomatically when the alarmsystemis armed;twin sensors insidethe vehiclemonitorthe interiorspace and willactivatethe alarmif an intrusionis detected. However,if passengersor animalsareto be leftinsidethe vehicle,or if a window or sunroofis to be leftopen, the alarmmust be armedwith interiorprotectionDISABLEDas follows: To disable interiorprotection: 1. Openthe driver’sdoor. 2. Withthe driver’sdoor open, use the handsetto armthe alarmin the normalway. 3. Closethe driver’sdoor (thedirection indicatorlightsflashthreetimesand the anti-theftindicatorlightcommencesflashing rapidly). The alarmsystemis now armedwith interiorprotectiondisabled.

WARNING If the vehicleis to be left with windows or sunroofopen, or with passengersor animals inside, the interiorprotectionMUST BE DISABLED,as describedabove.

NOTE: Interiorprotectionwillnot operatefor the first15 secondsafterthe alarmis set. ENGINEIMMOBILISATION Engine immobilisationis an importantaspect of the vehicle’ssecuritysystem, and occurs automaticallywheneverthe alarmsystemis armed. The systemalsoincludesa featureknown as ’passiveimmobilisation’,whichis designedto safeguardthe vehiclefrom theft should the driverforgetto lockthe doors or armthe alarm. Passiveimmobilisationoccursautomatically: • thirtysecondsafterthe starterswitchhas been turnedoff ANDthe driver’sdoor opened. • fiveminutesafterthe starterswitchis turnedoff or the alarmsystemis disarmed.

IMPORTANTINFORMATION The engineimmobilisationsystemrelies on the handsetto re-mobilisethe engine. Look afterthe handsetsat alltimes, protectingthem from loss, damageand batterydischarge. If the enginehas immobilisedpassively, re-mobilisationwilloccurwhen the starterswitchis turnedto position’II’, providedthe handsetis on the samering as the keyand in closeproximityto the switch. • ALWAYS keepthe handseton the sameringas the key. • NEVERattachboth handsetsto the

SAME keyring. Any attemptto startthe enginewhileit is immobilisedwillcausethe engine immobilisationwarninglight(on the left of the warninglightpanel)to flash.

Engine immobilisation override If the handsetis lostor failsto operate, engine immobilisationcan be overriddenby using the starterkeyto enterthe four digitemergency keyaccesscode (thiscode is recordedon the SecurityInformationcard). The procedurefor enteringthe code is describedbelow. Beforeenteringthe code, note the following: If your handsetis lostor inoperative,it is impossibleto disarmthe alarm. As soon as the door is opened, the alarmwillsound (continuouslyfor up to three30 second periods),and continuewhilethe code is being entered.Removethe handsetfrom the key ringand keepthe handsetwellawayfrom the starterswitchwhen enteringthe code.

1. Withthe driver’sdoor closed, insertthe key into the starterswitch, turn to position’II’and hold in thispositionfor 5 seconds. Then switchoff, and open and closethe driver’s door. 2. Turn the switchto position’II’the required numberof timesto enterthe firstdigitof the code (ifthe firstdigitis 4, turn the keyto position’II’and then backto ’0’four times). 3. Openthe driver’sdoor (to enterthe first digit)and then closethe door again. 4. Turn the starterswitchto position’II’and backto ’0’the requirednumberof timesto enterthe SECONDdigitof the code. 5. Openthe driver’sdoor (to enterthe second digit)and then closethe door again. 6. Turn the starterswitchto position’II’and backto ’0’the requirednumberof timesto enterthe THIRDdigitof the code. 7. Openthe driver’sdoor (to enterthe third digit)and then closethe door again. 8. Turn the starterswitchto position’II’and backto ’0’the requirednumberof timesto enterthe FOURTHdigitof the code. 9. Finally,OPENand CLOSE the driver’sdoor. If the code has been enteredcorrectly, the anti-theftindicatorlightwillextinguishand the enginecan be started.

If an incorrectcode has been entered: If the code is enteredincorrectly, the anti-theft indicatorlightwillcontinueto illuminateand the enginewillfailto start.Beforeenteringthe code again, turn the starterswitchto position ’II’and hold in thispositionfor 5 seconds. Afterthreefailedattempts, the security systeminvokesa delayperiodof thirty minutesduringwhichthe systemwillnot acceptany furthercodes.

WARNING • NEVERleave the SecurityInformation card in the vehicle. • Memorisethe emergencykey access code or keep the SecurityInformation card on your person in case of emergencies.
