TO THE DEALER: Assembly and proper installation of this product is the responsibility of the Frontier dealer. Read manual instructions and safety rules. Make sure all items on the Dealer’s Pre-Delivery and Delivery Check Lists in the Owner’s/Operator’s Manual are completed before releasing equipment to the owner.

The dealer must complete the Warranty Registration located on the Frontier website.

TO THE OWNER: Read this manual before operating your Frontier equipment. The information presented will prepare you to do a better and safer job. Keep this manual handy for ready reference. Require all operators to read this manual carefully and become acquainted with all the adjustment and operating procedures before attempting to operate.

Replacement manuals can be obtained from your Frontier dealer.

The equipment you have purchased has been carefully engineered and manufactured to provide dependable and satisfactory use. Like all mechanical products, it will require cleaning and upkeep. Lubricate the unit as specified.

Observe all safety information in this manual and safety decals on the equipment.

For service, your authorized Frontier dealer has trained mechanics, genuine Frontier service parts, and the necessary tools and equipment to handle all your needs.

Use only genuine Frontier service parts. Substitute parts will void the warranty and may not meet standards required for safe and satisfactory operation. Record the model number and serial number of your equipment in the spaces provided:

Throughout this manual, the term IMPORTANT is used to indicate that failure to observe can cause damage to equipment. GENERAL INFORMATION The purpose of this manual is to assist you in operating and maintaining your Root Grapple.

Read it carefully. It furnishes information and instructions that will help you achieve years of dependable performance.

These instructions have been compiled from field experience and engineering data. Some information may be general in nature, due to unknown and varying operating conditions.

However, through experience and these instructions, you should be able to develop procedures suitable to your particular situation.

2 Introduction

The illustrations and data used in this manual were current at the time of printing. However, due to possible inline production changes, your machine may vary slightly in detail. We reserve the right to redesign and change the machines as may be necessary without notification.

Throughout this manual, references are made to right and left direction. These are determined by standing behind the tractor facing the direction of forward travel.

SAFETY RULES ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! Safety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture of our products. Unfortunately, our efforts to provide safe equipment can be wiped out by an operator’s single careless act.

In addition to the design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, judgement, and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment.

It has been said “The best safety device is an informed, careful operator.” We ask you to be that kind of operator.

TRAINING ■ Safety instructions are important! Read all attachment and power unit manuals; follow all safety rules and safety decal information.

(Replacement manuals are available from selling dealer.) Failure to follow instructions or safety rules can result in serious injury or death.

■ If you do not understand any part of this manual and need assistance, see your dealer.

■ Operators must be instructed in and be capable of the safe operation of the equipment, its attachments, and all controls. Do not allow anyone to operate this equipment without proper instructions.

■ Never allow children or untrained persons to operate equipment.

■ Train all new personnel and review instructions frequently with existing workers. A person who has not read and understood all operating and safety instructions is not qualified to operate the machine. An untrained operator exposes himself and bystanders to possible serious injury or death.

PREPARATION ■ Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid getting caught in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing, and head; and respirator or filter mask where appropriate.

■ Make sure attachment is properly secured, adjusted, and in good operating condition.

■ Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS cab and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely fastened. Falling off power unit can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable ROPS system in “locked up” position at all times.

■ A heavy load can cause instability in driving a power unit. Make sure the rear of the tractor is properly counter-balanced with weights. Always drive slowly – especially around turns. An unstable power unit could steer badly and possibly tip over, causing injury or death.

The use of the optional rear 3 pt. ballast box is recommended. Ask your dealer.

■ Do not exceed the lift capacity of your loader.

See loader specifications.

■ Know your equipment's capabilities, dimensions, and operations before operating. Visually inspect your equipment before you start, and never operate equipment that is not in proper working order with all safety devices intact.

Check all hardware to ensure it is tight. Make certain that all locking pins, latches, and connection devices are properly installed and secured.

Remove and replace any damaged, fatigued, or excessively worn parts. Make certain all safety decals are in place and are legible. Keep decals clean, and replace them if they become worn or hard to read.

■ Move wheels to the widest recommended setting to increase stability.

■ Do not work under raised loaders without supporting them. Do not use support material made of concrete blocks, logs, buckets, barrels, or any other material that could suddenly collapse or shift positions. Make sure support material is solid, not decayed, warped, twisted, or tapered.

Lower loaders to ground level or on blocks.

Lower loaders and attachments to the ground before leaving the cab or operator's station.

■ Check the power unit's hydraulic system. Be sure the hydraulic oil and filter have been serviced according to manufacturer's recommendations. Refer to your power unit loader operator's manual or dealer for any adjustments necessary to put the hydraulic system in good working order.

SAFETY RULES ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! TRANSPORTATION ■ Always comply with all state and local laws governing highway safety and lighting and marking requirements.

■ Never allow riders on power unit or attachment.

■ Do not operate or transport on steep slopes.

■ Use extreme care and reduce ground speed on slopes and rough terrain. Travel with attachment as close to the ground as possible.

■ Do not operate or transport equipment while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Consult your doctor about operating this machine while taking prescription medications.

OPERATION ■ Always sit in power unit seat when operating controls or starting engine. Securely fasten seat belt, place transmission in neutral, engage brake, and ensure all other controls are disengaged before starting power unit engine.

■ Know your controls and how to stop engine and attachment quickly in an emergency.

■ Consult local utilities before working. Know location of and avoid contacting all underground cables, pipelines, overhead wires and other hazards in working area.

■ Use extreme care when working close to fences, ditches, other obstructions, or on hillsides.

■ Keep load centered on Root Grapple and loader. Make sure all loads are secure before lifting. If lifting with the grapple and the load appears to be unstable, lower the load, open the grapple and reposition the load to attain full stability.

■ Be sure the load does not stick out too far in front of the grapple. A light load sticking out too far can have the same tipping effect as a heavy load carried in close.

■ Watch for and avoid hidden obstructions, i.e., buried pipes, rocks, concrete piers, uneven concrete slabs, stumps, etc., when operating.

■ Stop power unit and equipment immediately upon striking an obstruction. Turn off engine, remove key, inspect, and repair any damage before resuming operation.

■ Stop loader gradually when lowering or lifting loads.

■ When stacking logs, trees, or stumps, always make sure the load will not roll back toward the power unit when released from Root Grapple.

■ Operate only in daylight or good artificial light.

■ Check material to be handled, especially at old building sites or dumps. Be alert for any hazardous material that could be released by root grapple contact. If in doubt, check with professional waste haulers.

■ Keep bystanders away from equipment.

■ Do not operate or transport on steep slopes.

■ Keep hands, feet, hair, and clothing away from equipment while engine is running. Stay clear of all moving parts.

■ When on a slope, keep the load low and proceed with extreme caution. Do not drive ACROSS a steep slope - drive straight up and down.

With a LOADED attachment - face the attachment and load uphill.

With an EMPTY attachment - face the attachment downhill.

■ Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS cab and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely fastened. Falling off power unit can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable ROPS system in “locked up” position at all times.

■ Never allow riders on power unit or attachment.

■ Look down and to the rear and make sure area is clear before operating in reverse.

■ Keep alert and watch the rear as well as the front when working with the Root Grapple.

■ Before leaving operator’s seat, lower loader and put attachment on the ground. Engage brake, stop engine, remove key, and remove seat belt.

■ Always check locking pins before tilting or operating any attachment.

■ Do not handle round bales with Root Grapple.

■ Do not detach loader from tractor with Root Grapple installed. Equip loader with material bucket when detaching.

■ Add the required amount of ballast on tractor.

(See Preparing the Tractor section of the Loader Operator's Manual to determine the type and amount of ballast required.)

MAINTENANCE

■ Hydraulic fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury or death.

Hydraulic leaks under pressure may not be visible. Before connecting or disconnecting hydraulic hoses, read your power unit’s operator's manual for detailed instructions on connecting and disconnecting hydraulic hoses or fittings.

• Keep unprotected body parts, such as face eyes, and arms as far away as possible from a suspected leak. Flesh injected with hydraulic fluid may develop gangrene or other permanent disabilities.

• If injured by injected fluid, see a doctor at once. If your doctor is not familiar with this type on injury, ask him to research it immediately to determine proper treatment.

• Wear safety glasses, protective clothing, and use a piece of cardboard or wood when searching for hydraulic leaks. DO NOT USE YOUR HANDS! SEE ILLUSTRATION.

■ Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid getting caught in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing, and head; and respirator or filter mask where appropriate.

■ Never go underneath equipment (lowered to the ground or raised) unless it is properly blocked and secured. Never place any part of the body underneath equipment or between moveable parts even when the engine has been turned off. Hydraulic system leak down, hydraulic system failures, mechanical failures, or movement of control levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly and cause severe injury or death.

■ Make sure attachment is properly secured, adjusted, and in good operating condition.

■ Before leaving operator’s seat, lower loader and put attachment on the ground. Engage brake, stop engine, remove key, and remove seat belt.

■ Never perform service or maintenance with engine running.

■ Keep all persons away from operator control area while performing adjustments, service, or maintenance.

■ Tighten all bolts, nuts, and screws to torque chart specifications. Check that all cotter pins are installed securely to ensure equipment is in a safe condition before putting unit into service.

■ Make sure all safety decals are installed.

Replace if damaged. (See Safety Decals section for location.)

STORAGE ■ Block equipment securely for storage.

■ Keep children and bystanders away from storage area.

DEALER ASSEMBLY (Models AV20H, AV20E, AV20D, AV20G)

Root Grapples are shipped completely assembled.

NOTE: Check customer’s tractor and loader for remote hydraulic outlets mounted on the front of the loader.

If customer’s equipment does not have this option, then it will be necessary to install hydraulic lines to the hydraulic remote outlets at the rear of the tractor.

If customer’s tractor is not equipped with hydraulic remote outlets, then one pair must be installed.

Optional parking stands are available. Stands fit all models – order 5WS811395.

Model AV20H only – The Root Grapple is packaged with the hydraulic hoses coiled and tied to the hydraulic cylinder.

After removing the Model AV20H from the skid, untie the hydraulic hoses and remove the three 3/8” x 3” bolts from the formed channel hose guide. Locate the hoses into the channel and reinstall the three bolts. The channel holds the hoses so they will loop properly at the lower pivot point.

OPTIONAL PARKING STAND INSTALLATION The pair of parking stands bolt on the back side of the main frame.

Locate a stand about 4 inches in from the end on each side of the main frame. See parts drawing on page 22.

Remove 1/2” carriage bolt from the clevis on the stand bracket. Install the clevis over the 3 inch square Lower Main Frame tube. Replace the carriage bolt and tighten.

Install the stand weldment into the bracket and pin in place. NOTE: For the model AV20H, install the pin in second hole location from the top of stand weldment. For all other models, use the top hole.

Be sure to raise the stand legs and pin in the raised position before using the Root Grapple.

8 Dealer Assembly

Inspect the equipment thoroughly after assembly to be certain it is set up properly before delivering it to the customer. The following check list is a reminder of points to inspect. Check off each item if it is found satisfactory or after proper adjustment is made.

____ Show customer the safe, proper procedures to be used when mounting, dismounting, and storing equipment.

____ Show customer how to make adjustments. ____ Check that all safety decals are installed and in good condition. Replace if damaged.

____ Check all bolts to be sure they are tight.

____ Present Owner’s/Operator’s Manual and request that customer and all operators read it before operating equipment. Point out the manual safety rules, explain their meanings and emphasize the increased safety hazards that exist when safety rules are not followed.

____ Check that all cotter pins and safety pins are properly installed.

____ Order optional parking stand kit if customer desires. Order #5WS811395.

____ Point out the safety decals. Explain their meaning and the need to keep them in place and in good condition. Emphasize the increased safety hazards when instructions are not followed.

____ Explain to customer the potential crushing hazards of going underneath raised equipment. Instruct customer that service work does not require going underneath unit and never to do so.

____ Complete the Warranty Registration located on the Frontier website.

INSTALLATION ATTACHING AND DETACHING EQUIPMENT (200 / 300 / 400 / 500 SERIES LOADERS) NOTE: Procedure is the same for all attachments. Bucket attachment shown.

ATTACHING (Root Grapple without optional parking stands) 1. Extend bucket tilt cylinders to angle attaching brackets forward.

NOTE: Angle must be greater than that of the brackets on the rear of the root grapple.

2. Drive forward, adjusting loader height and position until the top of the loader bracket engages the hooks (C) on the root grapple.

ROOT GRAPPLE SHOWN IN STORAGE POSITION (WITHOUT OPTIONAL PARKING STANDS)

3. Slowly retract the bucket tilt cylinders and raise the loader so the lower lock pins (F) engage the hole in the holder strap (E).

4. Continue to retract the tilt cylinders and raise the loader until the main frame of the root grapple is vertical.

5. Engage tractor parking brake and/or place transmission in PARK. Shut off tractor engine and remove key.

6. Install the quick-lock-pin (A) into the pins (F) on each side of the root grapple.

7. Connect the hydraulic hoses to the auxiliary hydraulic hook up on your loader or to the rear tractor remote outlets.

8. Start the tractor and lower the grapple clamp arms. Installation is now complete.

ATTACHING (Root Grapple equipped with optional parking stands) Follow the same procedure as above.

NOTE: Main frame will be vertical with parking stands. Raise parking stands and pin before using root grapple.

NOTE: On attachments with two pins (F), the 200, 300 and 400 series loaders will utilize the upper pin and the 500 series loader will utilize the lower pin.

10 Installation

INSTALLATION ATTACHING AND DETACHING EQUIPMENT (200 / 300 / 400 / 500 SERIES LOADERS) NOTE: Procedure is the same for all attachments. Bucket attachment shown.

DETACHING (without parking stands) 1. Place transmission neutral and start engine.

2. Open grapple clamps completely and raise loader about 18" (460 mm) above ground level.

3. Engage tractor parking brake and/or place transmission in PARK. Shut off tractor engine and remove key.

4. Remove the quick lock-pin (A) from each side of attachment. Store pins in storage position (B).

5. Disconnect hydraulic couplers to attachment.

6. Start engine and extend bucket tilt cylinders to roll root grapple forward. When tips of grapple clamps and points on lower main frame are about level with ground, lower loader boom until attachment is on ground.

Extend bucket cylinders until pin (F) releases from holder strap (E) on each side of attachment.

7. Back the loader away from the attachment until holder (D) releases from hook (C) on each side of attachment. Raise loader to clear attachment and continue backing.

8. Set parking brake and/or place transmission in PARK. Shut off engine and remove key.

DETACHING (with optional parking stands) 1. Always place the Root Grapple on a solid level surface when using the optional parking stands. Completely lower grapple clamp.

2. Place transmission in neutral and start engine.

3. Roll attachment back slightly and raise boom approximately 18" (460 mm) above ground level.

4. Engage tractor parking brake and/or place transmission in PARK. Shut off tractor engine and remove key.

Continued – 5. Remove the quick lock-pin (A) from each side of attachment. Store pins in storage position (B).

6. Disconnect hydraulic couplers to attachment. Lower the parking stands and pin in place.

7. Start engine and lower the Root Grapple to the ground. Extend bucket tilt cylinders until pin (F) releases from holder strap (E) on each side of attachment. Lower the loader until holder brackets are free from the hooks. Back tractor away from attachment.

8. Set parking brake and/or place transmission in PARK. Shut off engine and remove key.

ATTACHING EQUIPMENT (600 & 700 SERIES LOADERS WITH QUIK-CHANGE LATCHES)

(Root Grapple without optional parking stands) 1. Extend attachment cylinders to angle attaching brackets forward.

NOTE: Angle must be greater than that of the brackets on the rear of the root grapple.

700 SERIES

2. 600/700 - Drive forward, adjusting loader height and position until the top of the bracket is aligned with the pins (A).

3. Raise loader and retract bucket tilt cylinders to engage lock pins (D). Continue retracting the bucket tilt cylinders until the pins (D) have fully dropped on both sides.

NOTE: Loader with Quik-Change latch plates: Pins/handles on attachment DO NOT need to be in the UP position for attaching.

4. Retract bucket cylinders and raise loader until main frame of root grapple is vertical.

700 SERIES BOLT-ON LATCH SHOWN

5. Lower attachment, shut off engine and remove key. Connect hydraulic hoses to the auxiliary hydraulic hook up on your loader or to the rear tractor remote outlets.

6. Lower the grapple clamp arms.

Installation is now complete.

12 Installation

CAUTION!

ALWAYS CHECK LATCH PINS BEFORE TILTING OR OPERATING ANY ATTACHMENT.

INSTALLATION ATTACHING EQUIPMENT (600 & 700 SERIES LOADERS WITH QUIK-CHANGE LATCHES)

(Root Grapple equipped with optional parking stands) 1. Extend attachment cylinders to angle attaching brackets forward.

2. 600/700 - Drive forward, adjusting loader height and position until the top of the bracket is aligned with the pins (A).

700 SERIES

3. Raise loader to engage hooks and retract attachment cylinders quickly.

4. 600/700 - Raise loader until you can check that pins (D) on both sides have fully dropped.

700 SERIES BOLT-ON LATCH SHOWN

5. Lower attachment, shut off engine and remove key.

Connect hydraulic hoses to the auxiliary hydraulic hook up on your loader or to rear tractor remote outlets.

Pin the parking stands in the raised position.

1. Position the attachment with the main frame about vertical. Place the transmission in PARK and shut off engine and remove key.

2. Lift and rotate latches (A) up on both sides of attachment.

3A. DETACHING (without Parking Stands) Start tractor and extend bucket tilt cylinders to roll root grapple forward. When tips of grapple clamps and points of main frame are about level with ground, lower loader boom until attachment is on ground. Extend bucket cylinders until loader brackets clear latch pin pockets and holder is free from top pins.

3B. DETACHING (with Parking Stands) Lower parking stands and pin in position. Start tractor and lower attachment to ground. Slowly extend bucket tilt cylinders until loader brackets clear the latch pin pockets. Lower loader until holder clears the pins.

4. Drive tractor in reverse until loader is clear of the attachment.

(Root Grapple without optional parking stands) 1. To prepare the loader for attachment, pull and rotate handle to open latch (A).

2. Extend attachment cylinders to angle attaching brackets forward.

3. Drive forward, adjusting loader height and position until the bar (B) is under hooks (C) and tabs (D) are on the center side of the hooks.

4. Raise loader and retract tilt cylinders until latch closes.

NOTE: Latch automatically closes on global carrier.

5. Retract bucket cylinders and raise loader until main frame of root grapple is vertical.

6. Lower attachment, shut off engine and remove key.

Connect hydraulic hoses to the auxiliary hydraulic hook up on your loader or to rear tractor remote outlets.

7. Lower the grapple clamp arms. Installation is now complete.

ATTACHING EQUIPMENT (Root Grapple equipped with optional parking stands) 1. To prepare the loader for attachment, pull and rotate handle to open latch (A).

2. Extend attachment cylinders to angle attaching brackets forward.

3. Drive forward, adjusting loader height and position until the bar (B) is under hooks (C) and tabs (D) are on the center side of the hooks.

4. Raise loader and retract tilt cylinders until latch closes.

5. Pin the parking stands in the raised position.

6. Lower attachment, shut off engine, and connect hydraulic hoses (if equipped) to the auxiliary hydraulic hook up on your loader. Installation is now complete.

OPERATION Safety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture of our products. Unfortunately, our efforts to provide safe equipment can be wiped out by an operator’s single careless act.

In addition to the design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, judgement, and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment.

It has been said “The best safety device is an informed, careful operator.” We ask you to be that kind of operator.

WARNING ■ Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS cab and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely fastened. Falling off power unit can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable ROPS systems in “locked up” position at all times.

WARNING ■ Never allow children or untrained persons to operate equipment.

■ Keep bystanders away from equipment.

The operator is responsible for the safe operation of this equipment. The operator must be properly trained. Operators should be familiar with the equipment, the tractor, and all safety practices before starting operation. Read the safety rules and safety decals on pages 3 through page 7.

The Root Grapple is designed to handle logs, brush, loose stumps, limbs, medium size rocks and other hard to handle material.

A hydraulic cylinder(s) operates the grapple clamp arm(s) to grip and hold the material.

The Root Grapple is available in four models. Each model fits specific John Deere Tractor loaders within a horsepower range. (See specifications on page 2.)

One pair of remote hydraulic coupler outlets are required to operate the grapple clamp arm cylinder(s).

■ Never allow riders on power unit or attachment.

WARNING ■ Rear ballast is required to ensure 25% of gross vehicle weight is transferred to the rear axle.

Attachment and load must be included as weight.

Adequate rear weights are required to counterbalance maximum loader capacity and safe loader operation. Weight can be added as rear tire liquid, rear wheel weights, rear axle weights and/or three point hitch mounted ballast or implement. Ballasting will vary with tractor and loader attachment. Refer to the Tractor manual for recommended ballasting.

Operation Cont’d WARNING ■ DO NOT ram into frozen dirt piles, in ground stumps, or buried rocks. NEVER attempt to ram with the power unit and loader at high speed or full unit power. Sudden impact may result in structural failure and possible serious injury or death.

■ Transport the loaded Root Grapple at a slow speed and with the loader at the lowest transport position to avoid tipping or upsetting, which could result in serious injury or death.

■ NEVER GO UNDERNEATH EQUIPMENT. Never place any part of the body underneath equipment or between moveable parts even when the engine has been turned off. Hydraulic system leak down, hydraulic system failures, mechanical failures, or movement of control levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly and cause severe injury or death.

• Service work does not require going underneath.

• Read Manual for service instructions or have service performed by a qualified dealer.

■ Keep all persons away from operator control area while performing adjustments, service, or maintenance.

WARNING ■ Do not operate this product until you have positive indication that this attachment is securely mounted to the loader. Failure to install lock pins or have the latching mechanism engaged could result in injury or death.

HANDLING MATERIAL Approach the material to be handled with the grapple clamp open, when the rake frame contacts the material, close the grapple clamp. As the load is lifted, tilt the frame back and then apply hydraulic pressure to the grapple clamp a second time.

Sometimes, as the load is being lifted or pulled from a pile, it will shift.

It is recommended that the Root Grapple be tilted back when transporting. Always carry a load in a low position so that you have good visibility and a low center of gravity.

When lifting a heavy log or tree, always lift slowly and while the load is low to the ground, make the decision if the root grapple is properly positioned or if the load is too big or heavy to safely handle.

If necessary, the operator must release the Root Grapple from the load and back away. Then use a chain saw to cut it into lighter or more manageable pieces.

When handling a pile of posts, trees, boards, limbs, etc., it may be necessary to release the load and pick up smaller amounts.

The Root Grapple used properly, will make difficult handling and clean up jobs easier, but it requires a good safe operator.

When picking up logs or fallen trees, make sure that you pick up in the center of the load weight.

Remember that the stump end of a tree that has been bulldozed out of the ground has a lot of soil attached to the roots and can be very heavy.

If you are handling stumps that have soil attached to the roots, it is strongly suggested that you use the rake points to loosen and knock the soil off. Picking the stumps up and dropping them a few times will also remove soil. Removing soil from the roots will result in a cleaner burn pile and less cleanup work later.

When approaching a pile of brush or trees, watch out for branches sticking out of pile that may contact operator or power unit.

If operator is handling large branches or trees that are considerably wider than the width of the power unit, always be alert for branches of standing trees that could snap back toward the operator.

Operation Cont’d NOTE: Root Grapple Limitations The Root Grapple is designed for handling loose logs, trees, stumps, brush, or other loose material. It is not designed for heavy bulldozing.

The Root Grapple frame will dig into piles of bulldozed trees and stumps to consolidate them into fewer piles for more complete burning and final land clearing. The Root Grapple frame is not designed to bulldoze out stumps or buried rocks.

NOTE: To prevent damage to the grapple clamp arm, DO NOT use the grapple clamp to push or lift trees, logs, or stumps. DO NOT use the grapple clamp arm to rake or pull material back.

The grapple clamp is designed for holding material against the Root Grapple main frame only. It is NOT built for pushing, pulling, raking, or lifting heavy objects.

WARNING

CAUTION ■ Beware of lift clearance when raising loader to maximum height.

When stacking or loading vehicles, make sure you are operating in an area AWAY FROM OVERHEAD WIRES.

DANGER ■ Beware of low electrical wires when loader is raised. Serious injury or death can result if contact is made.

Do not leave the operator’s seat if any part of the tractor or implement contacts electric lines.

NOTE: If using the optional parking stands, be sure to raise the stand legs and pin in the raised position before using the Root Grapple.

■ Keep load centered on Root Grapple and loader. Unbalanced loads increase possibility of tipping or roll-over.

■ When handling brush or branches, be aware of branches that might contact power unit or operator.

■ When cleaning up old building sites, check for live utility lines. Always be sure electric, gas, and water lines have been properly disconnected.

CAUTION ■ Always stop the power unit, set brake, shut off engine, remove key, and lower loader to ground before attempting to service. Never leave equipment unattended with engine running.

■ Check material to be handled, especially at old building sites or dumps. Be alert for any hazardous material that could be released by root grapple contact. If in doubt, check with professional waste haulers.

TRANSPORTING ■ When stacking logs, trees, or stumps, always make sure the load will not roll back toward the power unit when released from Root Grapple.

Failure to observe the above warnings could result in serious injury or death.

18 Operation

Pay particular close attention to the Safety Messages regarding handling and transport. Avoid unnecessary injuries and equipment damage by exercising cautious, conscientious travel procedures.

OWNER SERVICE The information in this section is written for operators who possess basic mechanical skills. If you need help, your dealer has trained service technicians available. For your protection, read and follow the safety information in this manual.

■ Before dismounting power unit or performing any service or maintenance, follow these steps: disengage power to equipment, lower all raised components to the ground, operate valve levers to release any hydraulic pressure, set parking brake, stop engine, remove key, and unfasten seat belt.

WARNING ■ Never use your hands to locate a hydraulic leak. Use a piece of cardboard or wood. Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can penetrate skin. Openings in skin and minor cuts are susceptible to infection from hydraulic fluid. If injured by escaping hydraulic fluid, see a doctor at once. Gangrene and death can result. Without immediate medical treatment, serious infection and reactions can occur.

MAINTENANCE Periodically lubricate all pivot points with a good grade of grease.

Thoroughly clean the grease zerks before servicing. Dirt mixed with lubricant will rapidly wear parts and destroy bearings. Keep it clean.

Replace any worn or damaged parts immediately.

Do not use attachment with any damaged parts.

Check all bolts to make sure they are properly adjusted or tightened.

Check hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks and replace or tighten as necessary. Make sure hoses are not being pinched or chafed by movement of unit or loader.

The hardened steel points at the tip of each rake tine are replaceable. To replace the point, use a cutting torch or hand grinder to cut the welds.

Install the replacement point on the tine and weld in place.

Replace safety decals if damaged or missing.

STORAGE It is recommended to store the Root Grapple with the clamps fully opened and then face down. This leaves the grapple in a stable position with the rods of the hydraulic cylinders retracted into the cylinders.

See figure below.

STORAGE POSITION If the above method is not satisfactory, you may purchase the optional parking stand kit 5WS811395.

The stands bolt on the back of the main frame. Be sure to raise the stand legs and pin in the raised position before using the Root Grapple. (See page 22.) Always store the Root Grapple on a solid surface when using the parking stands.

Always store in a safe place away from children or livestock.
