2 Introduction INTRODUCTION This manual provides information on the use, adjustment, and operation of your CLAAS rotary swather.

The advice on care and servicing should be followed in order to obtain maximum performance and long service from the machine.

Assembly and regular inspections of your machine should be carried out by your specialist workshop.

Neglect in maintenance or service, and incorrect use will result in poor machine efficiency and loss of time.

With correct operation and maintenance, you will benefit from the technical know-how and experience that went into the design of the machine, and your rotary swather will always work reliably.

4 Preface OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE In order to prevent accidents, the instructions contained in this manual should be read carefully and observed by all persons involved with the operation, maintenance, and inspection of this machine.

Especially the sections »Safety instructions« and »Before operation« should be read and followed with utmost care.

The use of spare parts, accessories, and ancillary equipment which have not been manufactured originally by CLAAS, or have not been checked and approved by CLAAS, can change the specified design characteristics of the CLAAS machine or can detract from its functional performances, with a possible adverse effect on the active and/or passive safety of the machine and its working safety (accident prevention).

CLAAS are in no way liable for any damage or personal injury caused through the use of other than original or approved CLAAS parts, accessories, and ancillary equipment.

Technical specifications, dimensions, and weights are understood with the usual tolerances. CLAAS reserve the right to make subsequent changes in the course of technical developments.

Front, rear, right, and left always refer to the direction of travel.

When ordering spare parts, and in all correspondence, please state the Serial No. (Fz-Ident-Nr.) (2) of your machine. This is necessary to ensure that you receive the correct spare parts.

5 Safety instructions Before putting the machine into operation, read and follow the safety instructions!

DESIGNATED USE The CLAAS Rotary Swather is designed solely for use in customary agricultural operations (“designated use”).

The swather is suitable and intended for processing hay crops on the ground!

Use for any other purpose is considered as contrary to the designated use. The manufacturer accepts no liability for any damage or injury resulting from such misuse, and the risks are borne solely by the user.

The designated use also includes strict adherence to the conditions of operation, service, and repair as specified by the manufacturer.

The CLAAS Rotary Swather should be operated, serviced and repaired only by persons familiar with its characteristics, and aware of the dangers involved.

The relevant Accident Prevention Regulations, and all other generally accepted regulations on working safety, occupational health, and road traffic regulations must be observed at all times.

Unauthorised modifications made to the machine will exempt the manufacturer from all liability for any resulting damage or injury.

GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION REGULATIONS Basic rule: Always check the operational and road safety of tractor and machine before starting up!

Always hitch the machine to the tractor correctly, and only connect and secure the machine to the prescribed couplings.

Always place the prop stand in the correct position when hitching and unhitching the machine (Firm stand!).

Special care is required when hitching/unhitching the machine to/from the tractor.

Always attach counterweights by means of the fixing points provided for that purpose.

Observe the permissible transport lengths, widths and heights.

Check and mount transport accessories such as lights and warning devices, as well as protective appliances, if required.

Operating devices (ropes, chains, linkages, etc.) of remotely controlled equipment must be positioned in such a way that they cannot cause unintentional operation in any transport or operating situation.

For road travel, prepare the machine and secure or lock any moving parts as specified by the manufacturer.

Never leave the driver's cabin while the machine is moving.

Always adapt your ground speed to the surface conditions. Avoid making sharp turns when driving up or down slopes or when traversing an incline.

Handling, steering, and braking will be affected by the attached or trailed machine, as well as ballast weights.

Therefore, ensure adequate steering and braking power.

When making turns, always take the width and/or inertia of the machine into account.

General:

Operate the machine only when all guards are fitted and correctly positioned.

In addition to the instructions contained in this operator's manual, also observe the general Safety and Accident Prevention Regulations.

Ensure that nobody is within the machine's working or danger area.

The warning and instruction signs attached to the machine provide important information for safe operation; their observance ensures your safety!

Always comply with local traffic regulations when driving on public roads.

Before starting work, familiarise yourself with all the controls and instruments, and their functions. During field work or road travel it is too late!

Clothing worn by the operator must be close-fitting.

Avoid wearing loose jackets, shirts or ties.

No persons are allowed to ride on the machine during field work and while travelling on the road.

Do not remain in the machine's turning and/or slewing range.

Remotely actuated (e.g. hydraulic) components present a risk of crushing/shearing.

Before leaving the tractor, secure the implement from rolling away. Lower any mounted implements fully to the ground. Stop the engine and remove the ignition key.

Nobody may be allowed to stand between the tractor and the machine before the machine is prevented from moving or rolling away, by applying the parking brake and/or fitting wheel chocks.

Safety instructions Mounted machines Before attaching/detaching machines to or from the 3-point hitch, move the control lever to a position in which unintentional raising or lowering is not possible.

When attaching mounted machines to the 3-point hitch, the linkage categories of tractor and machine must match, or the necessary modifications must be made.

A risk of injury due to crushing or shearing exists in the vicinity of the 3-point hitch.

Do not stand between tractor and machine when operating the remote control for the 3-point hitch.

Always ensure that the tractor's 3-point hitch is adequately stabilised to prevent swaying with the machine in transport position.

During road travel with the machine raised, the control lever must be locked to prevent unintentional lowering.

Trailed machines

Never engage the PTO while the tractor engine is switched off.

When operating the PTO, nobody may ever stand in the vicinity of the rotating PTO stub shaft or universal drive shaft.

Always disengage the PTO for extreme turning angles or when the PTO drive is not required.

Attention! High-inertia implements run on after the PTO has been disengaged. Do not go near the implement before it has run down completely. Only when all machine movements have stopped, may work be started on the implement.

Never clean, lubricate, repair or adjust the PTO drive or the universal drive shaft unless the PTO has been disengaged, the engine is switched off, and the ignition key has been removed.

When disconnected from the PTO, the universal drive shaft must be secured in its holder or with a chain.

Secure the machine against rolling away.

After uncoupling the universal drive shaft, the guard must be pushed over the PTO stub shaft.

Observe max. permissible load capacity of couplings, drawbar, and hitch.

Damaged or defective parts must be repaired immediately, before starting work with the machine.

Ensure sufficient movement at the hitch point when hooking up the machine's towbar.

Hydraulic system

PTO operation Only use universal drive shafts specified by the manufacturer.

Always ensure that the guards for the universal drive shaft and PTO stub shaft are installed and in good condition. Make sure that universal drive shafts are properly covered by the guards, both in the transport and in the working position.

The hydraulic system is under high pressure.

When connecting hydraulic cylinders or motors, ensure that the hydraulic hoses are connected correctly.

The hydraulic circuits of both tractor and implement must be depressurized before connecting the hydraulic hoses to the tractor's hydraulics.

Always disengage the PTO, stop the engine and remove the ignition key before attaching or detaching the universal drive shaft.

Both male and female couplings of hydraulic function lines between tractor and implement should be marked to prevent incorrect connection. Exchanging the couplings will reverse the functions, e.g. raising/lowering.

Safety hazard!

If universal drive shafts with overload or overrun clutches are used, which are not protected by the tractor's guard, the overload or overrun clutches must be installed next to the machine.

Inspect hydraulic hoses regularly, and replace them if damaged or deteriorated. Replacement hoses must meet the technical requirements specified by the implement manufacturer.

Always make sure that the universal drive shaft is correctly installed and securely fastened.

Use suitable aids to prevent injury when checking for leaks.

Use safety chains to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

Fluids (hydraulic fluid) escaping under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. In case of injury, consult a doctor immediately. Risk of infection!

Before engaging the PTO, ensure that the selected speed and direction of rotation of the tractor's PTO match the machine's permissible speed and direction of rotation.

Before engaging the PTO, ensure everybody stands clear of the machine at a safe distance.

Before doing any work on the hydraulic system, lower the machine, depressurize the hydraulic system, and stop the engine.

Safety instructions Tyres Before working on tyres or wheels, ensure that the machine is safely parked and secured so that it will not roll away (wheel chocks).

Fitting tyres and wheels requires special training, expert knowledge, and the correct tools.

Repair work on tyres and wheels may only be carried out by professionals and with suitable tools.

Check tyre pressures regularly. Observe the recommended tyre pressures.

Maintenance Repair, maintenance, and cleaning work, as well as the elimination of malfunctions should only be done with the drive and engine switched off. Remove the ignition key.

IDENTIFICATION OF WARNING AND DANGER SIGNS All parts of this manual concerning your own safety and the safety of the machine, have been marked with the following symbols. Please pass on all safety instructions to any other user.

DANGER! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so would cause danger to life and limb to the operator and the people around him.

– Preventive measures.

Wait until all machine movements have stopped.

ATTENTION!

The repair of prestressed energy-storage devices (springs, hydraulic accumulators, etc.) requires unless proper equipment and experience, and may only be carried out in specialist workshops.

Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed. Failure to do so could result in damage to the machine.

Regularly check the tightness of nuts and bolts, and retighten them as necessary.

When doing work on the raised machine, ensure that it is chocked up safely by means of suitable supports.

When replacing working parts, always use suitable tools and wear safety gloves.

Dispose of oil, grease, and filters in the prescribed manner.

Always disconnect the power supply leads before starting work on the electrical system.

Guards and shields that are subject to wear must be inspected at regular intervals, and replaced in good time.

Spare parts must at least comply with the technical standards required by the implement's manufacturer.

This ensured e.g. by using original spare parts.

– Measures to prevent damage to the machine.

NOTE! Sign to indicate instructions for a more efficient and economic use of the machine.

ENVIRONMENT! Sign to indicate instructions which must be observed to prevent damage to the environment.

Danger to the environment is caused by improper handling and incorrect disposal of toxic material (e.g. old oil).

Before doing any electrical welding work on the tractor or mounted implements, always disconnect the leads from the battery and alternator.

Noise level If the noise level at the driver's ear exceeds 85 dB (A) (see "Technical data"), he must wear ear protection.

Safety instructions SAFETY DECALS WITH PICTORIALS Safety decals are attached to the danger zones of the machine. These safety decals help to alert persons to hazards which can cause personal injury. The pictorials provide instructions to avoid the hazard.

These safety signs, their placement on the machine and a brief explanatory text are shown on the following pages.

The CLAAS part number of every decal is stated ahead of the text.

The figure in ( ) refers to the adjacent picture and indicates the correct location of the decal on the machine.

Safety decals that are damaged or cannot be recognised any more must be replaced immediately by new ones.

When parts that have decals are replaced, always make sure to install the relevant new decals with each new part.

UNLOADING/LOADING THE MACHINE DANGER!

Improper lifting and transporting involves risk of accidents!

– Attach machine to load only at the attachment points (1) on left and right! The attachment points are marked with labels (2).

Assembly FIRST MACHINE HITCH-UP Before using the machine for the first time, the hitching points and the universal drive shaft must be matched to the tractor.

1. Check the scope of delivery against the delivery note.

2. Assemble the machine according to the instructions.

3. Hitch up the machine, and adapt the hitching points if necessary – see Hitching, page 8.2.

4. Adapt and connect the universal drive shaft – see Universal drive shaft, page 8.3.

5. Connect the hydraulic hoses – see Hydraulic connections, page 8.9.

6. Carry out the operations described in Items to check and observe before operation on page 8.1.

7. Put machine into operation – see Field operation, page 9.1.

8 Prior to operation DANGER! Working on the machine involves risk of injury through sudden drive activation!

– Switch off the tractor engine, and remove ignition key.

ITEMS TO CHECK AND OBSERVE BEFORE OPERATION 1. The tractor must be fitted with a single-acting control valve.

2. Check oil level in the gearbox.

3. Before first use, lubricate the swather thoroughly.

4. Check that all screws are tight.

5. Check all safety devices (e.g. overload clutches, covers of drive elements,...) for correct function and installation.

6. PTO speed of 540 rpm must not be exceeded.

7. Always engage the tractor PTO with the engine running at idling speed.

8. After hitching up the swather and coupling the drive shaft, carefully steer the tractor to right and left to check the drive shaft for free movement in all operating positions.

9. Use safety chains to prevent the drive shaft guards from rotating with the drive shaft.

10. Connect the seven-pin plug (driving lights) to the socket on the tractor.

11. Check operation of lighting, turn flashers and brake lights.

12. Check the tightness of the wheel nuts (see »Specifications« for torque values). Check the tyre pressures, and correct if necessary, in accordance with »Specifications«.

13. Direct all persons out of the danger area. Should anyone approach the rotary swather, switch it off immediately.

14. Never allow the rotary swather to run unattended.

Prior to operation HITCHING Before using the machine for the first time, the hitching points and the universal drive shaft must be matched to the tractor.

NOTE! Maximum drive shaft angles, and smooth operation of the swather can only be achieved if the machine is correctly hitched.

Attaching to the bottom links Hook the link pins of the hitch yoke (1) into the tractor's bottom links.

DANGER! Risk of machine damage and accident!

– Lower link hooks must be fully engaged, and secured with a bolt or pin - see manufacturer's manual.

Lock lower links laterally.

(Fig. 1) When swather is hitched, lower the lower links until the main frame (2) is horizontal.

Hydraulically lock the lower links in this position.

Prior to operation Universal drive shaft Push the drive shaft onto the tractor's PTO. Before first-time operation, check the length of the drive shaft when driving through bends.

DANGER! Risk of injury from drive shaft becoming disconnected during operation!

– Check that all locks are securely engaged before starting work with the drive shaft.

Checking and matching the drive shaft Bring tractor and swather into the straight-ahead position, and push both shaft sections onto the PTO stub ends.

Place the two sections alongside each other, and mark them so that a sliding distance (S) of 320 mm remains.

3 Shortening the drive shaft Shorten the inner and outer guard tubes by the same amount.

Shorten the inner and outer splined sections by the same amount as the guard tubes.

– With an attached machine, at least 20 % of the tractor's empty weight must still rest on the front axle. If necessary, counterweights must be fitted.

• The driving speed is to be matched to the traffic and road conditions – The maximum permissible speed when driving on the road is 40 km/h. The maximum permissible driving speed must be in observance of the national (country-specific) regulations! Reduce your speed when approaching a bend.

• Prepare the machine for road travel – see Before transport, page 8.15.

DANGER! Excessively high pressure can cause a tyre to burst!

DANGER!

– Keep clear of the tyre while inflating.

Working on the machine involves risk of injury through sudden drive activation!

– Check air pressure regularly.

– Repair, maintenance, and cleaning work, as well as the elimination of malfunctions should only be done with the drive and engine switched off.

– Remove ignition key, and disconnect the universal drive shaft.

DANGER! Risk of injury from sudden release of pre-tensioned components!

– Before starting maintenance work, all devices with stored energy (springs, pressure accumulators, etc.) must be deenergised/depressurised correctly.

DANGER! The chocked up machine / rotor can drop down unexpectedly during maintenance work!

Every time a wheel is mounted, the wheel nuts or bolts must be retightened after the first 10 hours of operation, and then checked for tightness every 50 operating hours. See »Specifications« for torque values.

Comply with stipulated tyre pressure, see "Specifications"!

Hydraulic system DANGER! Fluids (hydraulic fluid) escaping under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. In case of injury, consult a doctor immediately, as there is risk of serious infection!

– Before doing any work on the hydraulics, lower the machine and depressurise the hydraulic system.

– Inspect hydraulic hoses regularly, and replace them if damaged or deteriorated.

– Secure a chocked up machine with suitable supporting means.

ENVIRONMENT!

Wheels and tyres

Dispose of oil, grease, and filters in the prescribed manner.

DANGER!

Repair work on the hydraulic system may only be carried out by authorised special workshops.

Damaged tyres can deflate unexpectedly during operation, which could cause the machine to swerve suddenly!

Screws and bolts

– Check tyres regularly for damage and correct pressure.

Check all screws and bolts for tightness, and retighten if necessary.

– Repair work on tyres may only be carried out by professionals and with suitable tools.

Make sure that all securing pins and clips are in place.

Maintenance Lubrication Observe the specified oil-change intervals, and the correct oil grade in the gearbox. Only use high-quality branded grease and oil to lubricate the machine. Clean the grease nipples before applying the grease gun.

Lubricate the machine according to the lubrication chart at the end of this manual.

The specified lubrication intervals only apply for normal conditions of use. If the machine is operated under rough conditions, it must be lubricated more frequently.

NOTE! The quoted filling volumes are approximate values and the definitive factor for the correct oil level is always the oil level check.

ENVIRONMENT! Dispose of oil, grease, and filters in the prescribed manner.

Guards (Safety Frame) DANGER! Folding guards may only be opened when the drive is switched off and the engine is at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key!

Refit the guard frame and any other protective devices after completing any repair or maintenance work.

Check the guards regularly.

Worn or damaged guards should be replaced.

Maintenance CAM DRIVE HOUSING Use only fluid grease Retinax G to lubricate the cam drive housing.

The filling quantity is about 7 kg.

Check the fluid grease level regularly via the opening (1).

The described method of checking can only be used after about 20 operating hours.

Checking the lubricant level: Lower the rotors and locate in a horizontal position.

Using a dip-stick (3) check the level of fluid grease in both the cam drive housings. Insert the rule through the inspection hole (4) at an angle, and up to the 18 cm mark. The semi-fluid lubricant in the cam drive housings should be at least up to the "3 cm mark". If required, gearbox fluid grease Retinax G should be added through the aperture (4).

Re-close the checking aperture with the plug stopper (2).

The first oil change is due after the first 30 operating hours, and then every 100 operating hours.

Remove the oil by suction.

Maintenance DRIVE SHAFTS DANGER! Work should only be carried out on the drive shafts when the drive is switched off and the engine is at a standstill.

– Remove the ignition key!

The drive shaft should be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions - see the drive shaft manufacturer's operator's manual.

Observe the manufacturer's safety instructions!

Only use the drive shaft if it is in technically perfect condition.

General information concerning drive shafts

DANGER! Never use the drive shafts without guards or if the guards are damaged.

– Fit the drive guards and protection pipes.

– Secure the guard from rotation!

– Only use the drive shaft if it is in technically perfect condition.

Damaged or missing guard tubes, guard cones, or safety chains must be replaced immediately.

Protect the drive shafts from the effects of the weather.

After the working season the drive shafts should be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated.

In winter operation the protection pipes must be greased to prevent them from freezing up.

After each longer period of standstill the drive shafts should be re-greased when starting to work again and the readiness for service should be checked.

Lower the rotors into working position Switch the hydraulic system to pressure-free.

Release hex nut (5).

Turn the piston rod (6) inwards or outwards as required using an open-ended spanner (SW 22).

• Lock the hex nut (5).

• Lift out the rotor to the transport position.

• Recheck the lock and readjust if necessary.

NOTE!

Check that the lock engages securely on both sides at the smallest and at the largest working width.

Maintenance CENTRIFUGAL RUNNING GEAR If, during maintenance work, the rotor drives are dismantled, care must be taken to ensure that they are assembled correctly when they are refitted.

The rotors must always inclined towards the swath deposition (windrowing rubber) (Fig. 19).

Maintenance HYDRAULICS Repair work on the hydraulic system may only be carried out by CLAAS authorised special workshops.

Hydraulic hoses ATTENTION! Aged hydraulic hoses can burst or start leaking!

– Inspect hydraulic hoses regularly, and replace them if damaged or deteriorated.

Check hydraulic hoses before first-time operation, and then at least once a year.

Hydraulic hoses may not be used for longer than 6 years after date of manufacture. The date of manufacture (month and year) is marked on the hydraulic hose (Fig. 21).

Example: The marking "1 Q-2006" indicates that the production was in the first quarter 2006.

THREADED FASTENERS Tine rotors Check the tightness of the fastening screws (1) of the cam drive housings after the first 10 hours of operation, and retighten if necessary. Thereafter, check the screws regularly.

Before opening the safety guards: – Stop the engine .

– Remove the ignition key.

ROAD WHEELS In case of excessive wear in spite of correct tyre pressure, the toe-in (X) of the road wheels must be checked.

If necessary, adjust the toe-in by means of the track rods (1).

Maintenance Checking the track Check whether the swather is trailing centrally (a = a) behind the tractor (Fig. 30). To get the vehicles lined up, drive straight ahead for about 100 m.

If the swather is trailing with a lateral offset (Fig. 31), this can be corrected by means of the tie rod (2).

Remedy: If the swather trails with an offset to the right (Fig. 31), turn the eyebolt (4) on the tie rod (2) inwards.

• Release lock-nut (3).

• Remove the split pin (5) and the knuckle pin (6).

• Refit knuckle pin, and secure it with split pin.

Maintenance TYRES Tyre air pressure DANGER! Faulty tyres can lose their pressure unexpectedly during operation. Stability is endangered by this, especially when traversing a slope!

– Check tyres regularly for damage and correct pressure.

– Repair work on tyres may only be carried out by professionals and with suitable tools.

Excessively high pressure can cause a tyre to burst!

– Keep clear of the tyre while inflating.

– Use only compressed air to pump up the tyres.

– Observe the maximum permissible air pressure.

Check the air pressure in the tyres on a regular basis.

For pressure – see Specifications on page 6.1.

Wheel change Carry out a wheel change only on flat, firm ground.

Secure the machine against rolling away.

Use a suitable jack.

Every time a wheel is mounted, the wheel nuts or bolts must be retightened after the first 10 hours of operation, and then checked for tightness every 50 operating hours.

Maintenance WINTER STORAGE 1. Remove all crop residues and dirt from the swather.

2. Wipe grease and dust from the outside of all bearings.

3. Lubricate all grease points until grease emerges from the bearings (see Lubrication chart). Run the swather for a short time.

4. Check the swather for wear and damage and carry out repairs.

5. Clean rusty areas and repair damaged paint work.

6. Use protective tyre paint to prevent rubber from deteriorating.

7. Store the swather in a dry place, and not together with artificial fertiliser.
