BACKHOE OPERATION

IMPORTANT: Read the manufacturer’s instruction manual for safe installation before operation. DO NOT use a backhoe that is not approved by Case.

WARNING: Before you operate the backhoe in an area where your visibility is reduced, such as next to a building, etc., always install a guard rail and warning signs to keep other persons away from your machine.

WARNING: Before operating the backhoe, always be in the operators seat. Serious injury or death can result if you do not follow these instructions.

WARNING: Raised equipment on the machine without an operator can cause injury or death. Before you leave the operators compartment, always support or lower the equipment (backhoe, blade, boom, bucket, etc.) to the ground and stop the engine.

General

Be a careful operator. You can prevent accidents. Read the following information as well as the safety section of this manual.

The backhoe will dig more material in less time when a smooth, short dig cycle is used. IMPORTANT: Before you operate the backhoe for the first time, move the machine to an open area. Run the engine at 1/4 throttle. Actuate each backhoe control lever until each movement is smooth.

WARNING: A working backhoe can injure or kill. Before you start, always make sure that all persons are away from the DANGER AREA.

Digging with the Backhoe

WARNING: Always know the location of all workers in your area. Warn them before you start working the machine. Always keep all other persons away from your area. Serious injury or death can result if you do not follow these instructions.

Filling the Bucket

Fill the bucket by operating the boom, dipper, and bucket as necessary to keep the bucket parallel with the cut. Let the bucket teeth and the cutting edge cut through the ground like a knife blade. The type of the material that you dig determines the depth of the cut.

1.CORRECT 2.WRONG: BUCKET WILL DIG-IN AND CAUSE A STALL 3.WRONG: BUCKET IS PUSHED UP. THIS WILL ALSO SLOW THE CYCLE TIME.

Correct Trenching Method

IMPORTANT: Do not backfill a trench with the backhoe by swinging the bucket sideways against the soil.

Object Lifting with the Backhoe

IMPORTANT: Read the backhoe manufacturer’s instructions before doing any lifting operations. NOTE: Be aware of local regulation that may mandate the use of special equipment when using the backhoe for lifting objects, such as a boom lowering control device.

The backhoe is NOT a crane. For this reason, always be very careful when you lift an object with the backhoe. Read the precautions that follow before you begin. 1.Know and understand each signal from the signalman before you begin. 2.Always know the location of all persons in your working area. 3.Attach a hand line to the object before you start. Make sure the person holding the hand line is away from the object. 4.Test lift the object before you begin your job.

A.Move the machine close to the object to be lifted.

B.Use a cable or sling to fasten the object to the end of the dipper at the bucket pivot point.

C.Lift the object with the backhoe so it is 25 to 50 mm (one or two inches) above the ground.

D.Swing the object all the way to one side.

E.Move the object away from the machine. Make sure you keep the object 25 to 50 mm (one or two inches) above the ground. F.Lower the object to the ground if: (1) one of the stabilizers is raised above the ground or (2) there is any other indication that the stability of the machine is reduced.

5.Always move the object slowly. Do not move the load over persons. 6.When the object is raised, keep all persons at a safe distance until the object has been lowered onto the ground. 7.Remember to lower the object to the ground if (1) one of the stabilizers is raised above the ground or (2) there is any other indication that the stability of the machine is reduced.
