Rigid Front Axle Preliminary operations prior to working on the front axle – Position the tractor on flat stable ground.

– Apply the handbrake.

– Chock the rear wheels.

– Raise the relevant front wheel and support using stands.

– Remove the wheel.

Epicyclic reduction gear and wheel hub Removing the epicyclic reduction gear – Place the plug (1) in the high position (to prevent projection due to excessive pressure).

– Unscrew the plug (1).

– Place a recipient under the reduction gear.

– Place the drain hole in the low position.

– Drain the oil.

– Remove the screws (2).

– Remove the planet carrier cover (11) using the two edge slots.

– Systematically replace the O-ring.

– Replace any defective components.

Note : The cover (11) and pins (3) form a single reference.

Refitting the epicyclic reduction gear – Refit the satellites.

– Index the washer (12) with the satellite axis (3) (axle 20.29).

– Tighten screw (10) to 7,9 daN.m.

– Index the washer (7).

– Fit the circlip (9), (axles 20.19 and 20.22).

– Fit the new new circlip (26) with splined washers (24) and (25).

– Grease the seal (17).

– Fit the cover (11).

– Tighten the screws (2) to 2,5 daN.m.

– Fill with oil and check the level.

– Proceed in reverse order to the preliminary operations.

– Remove the retaining ring (26) and washers (25) and (24).

– Unscrew the 8 screws (22).

– Insert 2 of these screws (22) into the holes (A) provided and use them as an extractor to remove the ring gear carrier.

– Remove the hub (15).

– Extract the bearing inner ring (18) with an extractor.

– Support the wheel pivot with a hoist.

– Remove the lower (38) and upper pins (32).

Note : To remove the bush (45) from inside the axle, it must be cut before it can be extracted.

– Extract the upper bush (45) and the lower ball joint (46) from the pivot pin housings with an extractor.

– Extract the ball joint (40) mounted on the pin.

– Fit the new bush (44) to the axle body using tool n° 60 0500 653 8.

Wheel swivel pin Note : The lower and upper pivot pin bushes can be inserted inside the axle body if they are chilled beforehand.

– Fit the pivot pin inner bushes (45) and (46).

– Position the bushes (40) on the lower pivot pins with a press (Fig. 20).

– Grease the pivot pin housings.

– Position the Belleville washers (41) and (42).

– Insert the universal shaft into the axle body.

– Support the wheel pivot.

– Fit pivot pins (32) and (38) and tighten the screws to 19 daN.m.

Note : Make sure that the Belleville washers remain in place.

For the remainder of the operations, proceed in reverse order to removal, tightening to the specified torques.

Bevel gear and differential Removing the bevel gear and differential – Immobilise the tractor (see "Preliminary operations prior to working on the front axle").

– Remove the front axle.

Note : To remove the drive pinion and differential lock assembly, the universal shafts must be removed beforehand.

– Drain the differential by unscrewing the plug (19), (Fig. 27).

– Remove the bearing (12) by unscrewing the screw (13).

– Extract the bushes (9), (10), (7).

– Remove the ring seal (1).

– Loosen the bevel pinion nut (2) using tool n° 60 0500 653 6.

– Support then remove the cover (16) containing the drive pinion and differential.

– Remove the screws (34) and locking tabs (35) and (57).

– Mark the differential bearing flanges (22) in relation to the cover (16) to avoid reversing them on refitting.

– Unscrew the toothed nuts (36) using tool n°60 0500 653 4.

– Remove the screws (23).

Note : Do not reverse the bearings of the differential bearing blocks if they are not replaced.

– Put the cover fitted with the bevel pinion in a vice.

– Hold the drive pinion.

– Unscrew the nut (2) from the bevel pinion and extract it.

– Extract the inner bush from the bearing with an extractor.

– Extract the outer rings from the bevel pinion bearings (4) and (18).

– Open the housing.

– Remove all parts contained inside and check them.

– Check the thickness of the discs (27), (29) and backplates (28) of the self-locking differential.

Adjusting pinion protrusion – Mount the bevel pinion bearings in the cover (16).

– Maintain pressure on the inner races of these bearings using a screw and washers (Fig. 33). The bearings should rotate when turned by hand.

– Mount a bearing half-flange (22) and measure the diameter "D" (Fig. 33).

Bevel gear and differential – Measure dimension "Y" with the end of the depth gauge against the bearing inner ring.

– Deduct "B": B = Y – 50 + (D/2).

– Add shims to the bevel pinion shaft to thickness "C" : C = B – V.

Bevel gear and differential Setting the bevel pinion preload – Replace the washer (5) and the spacer (17).

Note : This adjustment is made on the bevel pinion only, without the ring gear, after fitting the 2 tapered bearings.

Note : All preloads must be measured without the sealing ring (1).

Important : Do not tighten the nut in one go.

– Tap the ends of the pinion lightly with a hammer to seat the bearings correctly.

– A new spacer (17) must be fitted.

– The nut must be tightened gradually, without overtightening, using tool n° 60 0500 653 6.

– Wind a cord around the splined part of the pinion (Fig. 38).

– Using spring balance n° 77 0138 800 8, measure the force (P) required to rotate the pinion. It should be between 9,2 and 13,7 daN. – Lock the nut by bending the lock washer.

Adjusting backlash – Refit the differential housing.

– Refit the flanges (22).

– Tighten the screws (23) to 26 daN.m.

– Check the teeth clearance, which must be included between 0,18 and 0,23 mm for the axles 20.22,20.29 and 0,15 and 0,20 mm for the axles 20.19.

P

– Repeat several times by checking a number of teeth.

– If the values differ, place the probe on the tooth where the lowest value was recorded.

– Apply the same torque to the differential bearing nuts : Use the tools n°60 0500 653 4.

Bevel gear and differential – Adjust the bearing nuts to move the crown wheel away from or closer to the pinion, starting on the crown wheel side.

– Tap the bearings lightly with a plastic hammer to ensure correct seating.

– Adjust the bearing slotted nuts as follows : • If the backlash measured is below the stated tolerance range, screw in the nut on the side away from the crown wheel and screw out the other nut by the same amount.

• If the backlash measured is above the stated tolerance range, screw out the nut on the side adjacent to the crown wheel and screw in the other nut by the same amount.

Adjusting the differential bearing preload

– Adjust the meshing backlash beforehand.

– Wind a cord around the splines in the pinion shaft.

– Measure the force required to rotate the crown wheel and pinion assembly "F".

– Depending on the bevel pinion preload "P" measured previously, apply the formula : F = P + 9,2 à 10,7 daN. – For example, if P = 11 daN, F = 20,2 à 21,7 daN. – Adjust the different bearing nuts with the same torque while ensuring that the preset backlash is maintained.

Note : Do not invert the bearing nuts or the direction in which the crown wheel is fitted.

Bevel gear and differential Checking the settings – To check the contact print of the bevel gear teeth, stain the ring gear with minium and detect the contact. The contact print must always be examined on the teeth of the ring gear and on 2 sides. Before checking, fit the ring gear with Loctite (243) and tighten the screws to 120 daN.m (axle 20.19) and 105 daN.m (axle 20.22, 20.29).

Contact correct (A) – If the bevel gear is set correctly, the contact of the teeth surfaces will be regular.

Excessive contact at the tip of the tooth (B) – Move the pinion closer to the ring gear and then move the ring gear away from the pinion to adjust the backlash.

– Refit the axle and tighten the 4 axle mounting screws to a torque of 40 daN.m and the wheels to 45 daN.m.

– Coat the bearing surfaces of the differential housing with Loctite (510).

– Check the condition of the breather.

– Mount the combined joint (1) with tool n° 60 0500 653 7.

– Remove the circlip (10), extract the stop washer (21) and the 2 washers (16) mounted on the universal shaft (5), and change them if necessary.

Note : The parts (10), (21), and (16) are present only on the 20.29 SI axle. For the 20.25 SI axle, go directly to the next operation.

– Unscrew the screws (14) to enable the wheel hub to be removed from the steering swivel pin.

– To remove the sprocket (17) and ring gear (12) assembly, insert 2 of the screws (14) into the threaded holes in the sprocket (17) and use them as extractors.

– Remove all of the centring bushes (15) using a bearing extractor.

– Use a 3-armed extractor to extract the cylinder from the upper part of the axle structure.

– To remove the lower axis of the suspension jack, loosen the twisting bars (116) by unscrewing the adjustment screw (114) and the 3 fastening screws (109).

– On refitting, pay attention to the tightening and directon of the coupling (92).

Note : Use a flat body-panel chisel to free the pin (96) when it is seized.

– For the remainder of the operations, proceed in reverse order to removal, tightening to the specified torques.

– For the 20.25 SI axle, remove the cover (16b), then remove the nuts (36) using tool n°00 1138 248 0.

– Drain the axle via the plug hole (19); plug hole (50) is used for filling and level checking.

– Mark the flanges (22) before removing them to prevent inverting them on refitting.

– Remove the wheel shafts.

– Extract the differential housing, taking care not to invert the bearing outer rings.

To remove the pinion set, the entire differential unit needs to be disassembled. However, it must be kept on until the bevel pinion nut has been loosened.

– Remove the bearing (12) by unscrewing screw (13).

– Whenever the housing is removed, change the screws (43), apply Loctite (648) and tighten them to a torque of 10,5 daN.m.

With an extractor, remove the bushes (7) and (10).

– Systematically change all the seals.

– Change the bushes (58), (56), (55), (7), (10) if necessary.

– Put the cover fitted with the bevel pinion in a vice (20.29 SI).

– Remove the combined seal (1).

– Hold the drive pinion.

The contact print must always be examined on the teeth of the ring gear and on 2 sides. – Chock the tractor.

– Drain the rear axle.

– Remove the guards and the transmission shaft.

– Remove the cover (17).

Note : In the case of an axle fitted with a proportional power take-off, the control unit must be disconnected and the housing (38) removed, (Fig. 2).

– Remove the circlip (23).

– Remove the seal carrier bushing (22) using the locally made tool (Fig. 7 and 8).

– Remove the shims (20) and the cup (18).

– Extract the shaft (25) and bearing cone (19) assembly while supporting the clutch assembly (16) and the clutch housing (15).

– Remove the assembled clutch (16), bell pinion (15) and bearing cone (14).

– Extract the bush (11) using the locally made tool (Fig. 8 and 10).

Note : Where fitted with a proportinal power take-off, the shaft (7) must be pushed slighly out of the way towards the rear of the tractor and the bearing cup (39) and circlip (40) removed, (see chapter C "Proportional power take-off").

– Remove bearing cup (13) if required.

Remove the driving pinion (6), (Fig. 3 and 1).

– To remove the gear (6), the left hydraulic cover must also be removed.

– In the case of a tractor without crawler speeds, push out the double pins (2) of the coupling sleeves (1) and (5).

– Slide the sleeves towards one another on the shaft (3).

Note : According to the tractor reference, the hub (30), the cover (35), the Belleville washers (31), the discs (33) and the backplates (34) may differ.

– Separate the hub (30) from the housing (32).

– Remove the O-ring from the hub (30).

– Remove the Belleville washers .

– Remove the two rings (12), (Fig. 13).

– Extract the cone (19) using a press and an appropriate installation.

Note : If the proportional power take-off gear (41) has been removed, tighten the screws to 11 daN.m with Loctite (243), (Fig. 2).

– Ensure that the duct of hub (30) is not blocked.

– Refit the Belleville washers (31) the right way round, (Fig. 14).

– Position the hub (30) in the clutch housing (32).

– Align the holes in the discs (33), the backplates (34) and the cover (35).

Note : To assist final fitting of the clutch, align the clutch housing on the disc, backplate, cover assembly (35) using 2 guide rods (A), without refitting the circlip (37) or the shims (36) and (9), (Fig. 15).

– Remove the bell pinion.

4 wheel drive unit Clutch adjustment – Place the clutch under the press with a suitable jig.

– Apply a force of 2 000 daN to fully compress the Belleville washers.

– Fit the circlip (37) and the splined washer (36).

– Using a set of shims, measure the space X between the cover (35) and the splined shim (36).

– Select the shim(s) (9) and the splined shim (36) to leave a play "J1" of 1±0,1 mm.

Note : There are 2 thicknesses of splined shim (36).

– Remove the circlip (37).

– Position the previously selected shim(s).

Important : The splined shim (36) is fitted on the circlip side.

– Refit circlip (37), the cover (28) and circlip (26).

– Fit the clutch assembly (16) on the clutch housing (15).

– Fit the bush (11).

– Align the hole in the bush with the rear axle housing inlet port, set 4 to 5 mm back from the face of the cup (13), (Fig. 19).

– Check that the duct of shaft (25) is not blocked.

– Fit the bearing cone (19) on the shaft (25).

Adjusting the shaft lateral clearance – Mount the shaft (25) without shims and without the clutch (16) in the rear axle.

– Fit the seal carrier bushing (22) with the old seal and the circlip (23).

– Pull on the shaft while turning it alternately clockwise and anticlockwise to properly seat the bearings.

– Place a dial gauge probe at the end of the shaft.

– Push and pull on the shaft to measure the lateral play.

– Depending on the amount of play measured, select the thickness of shims (20) required to give a play "J2" of 0 to 0,10 mm.

– Remove the circlip, the seal carrier bushing and the shaft (25).

– Fit a new lip seal (24) in the seal carrier bushing (22).

– Lubricate and fit the new sealoing rings on the shaft (25).

– Fit the clutch (16) in the housing and install the shaft (25).

Note : Take all precautions to protect the new seal (24) when fitting the shaft (25).

Note : See chapter "C" for the proportional PTO shaft (7) refitting procedure.

– Clean and degrease the housing seal face.

– Smear the parting surface with Loctite (510) and tighten the screws (10) of the cover or housing (proportional PTO) at a torque of 16,5 ± 2,5 daN.m.

Final steps – Fit the transmission shaft and guards.

– Check the rear axle oil level.

– Test front axle engagement and check for leaks from the unit.
