“We've just had one thing after another and it could kill someone, but I've stayed on top of it but this one, mentally, I found it hard to just sit on the couch and rest … I'm just not that kind of person. “This injury was the worst out of the lot because it put me on my butt, and I couldn't do anything.”
Vicki and her husband received a call from Rory's school to say that their son, who was eight at the time, was unconscious and an ambulance was on the that Rory had suffered a very rare bleed on the brain and a helicopter was put on route to airlift him to Brisbane where he was in a coma for several days. With specialist nurses and doctors on board, there was no room for Vicki and her husband who had just been told that their son might not make it.
Eleven stitches, an artificial lens and artificial pupil, and two and a half years of recovery later, Vicki was certain that life couldn't throw any more curve Unfortunately, balls. that wasn't the case.
The loss of balance was also the cause of a nasty fall last November that left Vicki with lisfranc ligament fractures in one foot and tore the ligaments off the bone on the other.
COMMUNITY
After another year of fundraising for Rally for a Cause, it was wonderful to see everyone let their hair down for four days of fun on the Dunga Derby
“Of everything that has happened to me this was by far the worst moment in my life,” Vicki said. “Even now, seeing a rescue helicopter brings tears to my eyes. It was so Rdramatic.”orywasunable to talk, walk or eat by himself until months later after undergoing extensive therapy. Miraculously he is now a happy and healthy teenager.
The Hervey Bay RSL is proud to be a Dunga Derby Rally Partner and a major supporter of local charity Rally for a Cause which, since 2015, has come to the aid of 140 local families and individuals affected by life-limiting medical conditions or who have had their lives turned upside down by sickness, sudden death or disability.

Now, with financial support from local charity Rally for a Cause, the Hervey Bay resident is literally getting back on her Manyfeet.Fraser Coast residents would know Vicki from her 25-year career with Tasman Venture Whale Watching and her passion for whale know is behind that big smile and zest for life is a long history of devastating medical issues for both Vicki and her son, Rory.
The Hervey Bay RSL will provide well over $50,000 in sponsorship this year, which is made up of funds from monthly support to Rally For A Cause along with proceeds from Wednesday’s bingo, entry of Car 40, and funds for the new the RFAC website.
Being bound to a wheelchair and not being able to work was an incredibly difficult concept for her to comes to term with, especially being such an active person with a passion for surfing and touch football.

After all this tragedy, it has taken years for a very proud Vicki to accept the help of Rally for a Cause after being nominated by a friend. “I was apprehensive because I felt like the money should be going to sick kids, and I know what that's like,” Vicki “Butsaid.it was all getting a bit hard, and I finally said yes. I was getting stressed, and my husband has been working his butt of to pay the bills, and he's my carer as well so he was RFexhausted.”justAChasbeen taking care some of Vicki's medical expenses with physiotherapy and therapy to help regain some balance being at the top of the list. The good news is that Vicki is treatment,physiotherapythankscancer-freenowandtotheshewas able to go back to work part time this whale “Physioseason.hasbeen everything to me and it's not cheap when you do it weekly,” Vicki said. “Having that financial aid meant that I could go once a week, not once a “There'smonth. another physio too that deals with balance, and he's been helping me with all those other issues that are never going to go away … I never would have been able to have that without the help. “It is amazing the amount of stress it does take off you; you're already dealing with pain and medical stuff and then the financial stuff when your off work does come into play. “My physio is my God. “Rally for a Cause has helped me get that aid and get me back on my feet, literally!”
Next, Vicki received the devastating news that she had breast cancer. Staying in Brisbane with Rory for two months had an impact on the family's financial situation, so a determined Vicki wasn't going to let cancer stop her from working, even while having Achemotherapy.fewdaysbefore the whale watching season was set to start, Vicki was helping to load the boat's alcohol stock when a mini champagne bottle hit the concrete, exploded, and sent a piece of glass flying into her eye.
OVERCOMING ADVERSITY WITH HELP FROM RFAC
After finding herself walking into walls, getting dizzy spells and being generally clumsy, the diagnosis came that she had a benign brain tumour on her inner ear that sits on the nerve which gives balance, hearing, and facial Themovement.non-cancerous tumour is not something that can be removed without loss of hearing or brain function so it's an ongoing “watch and wait” scenario with the doctors.
LOOKING at a bright and vibrant Vicki Neville you couldn’t imagine that her life has been turned upside down and inside out over the past 10 years.
RSL Car #888 withstood it's third time on the dunga tracks and veteran Car #40 “Happily Donated” gave the media team a taste of all the dunga action including some icy 5.30am starts. The support from RFAC to its recipients is often life changing, and to see the parents of disabled children get the help they need with equipment or health care, or the stress taken off a recipient with cancer by offering financial assistance to pay the bills while they have treatment, for example, is just so heart-warming and the reason we come back on board as a sponsor every year. Taking part in the dunga is just a fun bonus. Congratulations to all the teams involved on raising over $500,000 this year!

As well as sponsoring the charity with $500 worth of shopping vouchers each month through the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program, the club has purchased the van for the ladies to use any time they like, with the cost of registration and insurance also Now,covered.instead of trying to fundraise to buy a van, Trish and Josie can continue to use their fundraising efforts to keep the regions homeless fed and warm.
It is a time to celebrate the oldest living and continuous culture in the world and this year's theme - Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! – was honoured at several events around the Fraser Coast recently.
“I really appreciate the RSL and what they have done with this grant … a weight had been lifted because I needed to make X-number of registrations just to cover the court hire,” Ashik said. “Not having to worry about that fee helped us so much, and we can now reinvest into our many programs to make our future basketball training camps and events even better. We're so grateful. “The school holiday programs were very well received, and the kids had an amazing time learning, participating and getting to know this new, exciting and awesome style of ball.” Ashik knows only too well the benefits of children playing sports and in particular basketball, which he has used in the past to combat issues with his own mental health. “It's not just about the game, it's about the wellness involved in the game and the mental health benefits that come from “Iparticipation.usebasketball as a tool to raise awareness and reduce stigmas surrounding mental health, raise funds for mental health foundations and I'm thinking outside the box to find activities for good mental health and well-being.
“We are very grateful for the Hervey Bay RSL coming on board to help us out with this “Everyoneevent.is nice and friendly, and we do the Welcome to Country and the smoking ceremony and it's a great day.”
The two volunteers from the not-forprofit 'Trish and Josie Supporting the Homeless' volunteer their time, and often their own money, to keep about 40 of the regions homeless fed at a breakfast each Tuesday and Thursday at the back of the Hervey Bay Community Centre. They also supply backpacks to those in need, filled with essentials like soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, a brush, sanitary items for the ladies, roll on bug repellent, and more.

The Hervey Bay resident and longtime basketball coach, trainer and fanatic is the founder of Wide Bay Basketball which he started under the umbrella of The Alley Oop Project about 12 months ago. But it's not your average game of Insteadbasketball.offive players on each team, Ashik has brought the game of 3v3 to Hervey Bay and plans to extend it to the entire Wide Bay region. “3x3 was a globally featured event for the first time at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and has been gaining in popularity ever since and will be an exciting basketball addition on the Fraser Coast,” Ashik said. He said its simplicity is what makes it special. It's a simple game with one hoop, played only on a halfcourt and two teams of three, plus one sub. It's a fast 10-minute game with a 12-second shot-clock, no break after scoring, no half time and no Itquarters.hasgreat entertainment value with game over at 21 points, first to two points wins a tie and usually played to non-stop music.

GEM OF A PROGRAM HELPS DVF VICTIMSPIPING UP FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
“There were horses there that are worth tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars more than my mare who was bred on a cattle farm in Gympie, and I've broke in and trained her myself to international level.” Ellyn said the cost of travelling with a horse and entry fees to an event of his calibre is costly, so the $500 RSL Community Grant was a blessing.
“It is quite a hit financially to compete at these bigger events especially when living up here I have to travel many hours for every qualifying event and any training lesson, which is often five hours return just for a 45-minute coaching Congratulationslesson.”Ellyn!
“RUBY will benefit female victims of domestic and family violence, empower, and equip them with the skills they need to stand up to DV.
RIDING HIGH AT INTERNATIONAL EVENT (CONTINUED)COMMUNITY
“In turn the program will assist the Queensland Police service to drive down repeat Domestic and family violence incidents within our community.
RUBY (Rise Up, Be Yourself) is one of the most popular programs at the Hervey Bay PCYC, designed as a physical fitness program for women who have been affected by Domestic and Family Violence.
“The grant money from the RSL helped towards the cost of fuel down and back, especially with the inflated fuel costs and towing 3-3.5ton of trailer, gear and horse over 2436km.
The Hervey Bay RSL has supported this successful program for the past four years and has proudly come on board again this year with a $11,500 sponsorship as part of the RSL Community Grants Program.

Program coordinator Sergeant Kelly Chamberlain said domestic and family violence is one of the biggest challenges the Queensland Police face daily She said DFV is not only physical – it can be emotional, sexual, financial, social, spiritual, verbal, psychological or technology based.
“PCYC is very thankful for the continued support of Hervey Bay RSL.”
RUBY will run weekly in both Hervey Bay and Maryborough. For more information, please contact the RUBY program coordinator Sergeant Kelly Chamberlain 4124 5211 or email ruby.herveybay@pcyc.org.au for a confidential discussion.
The prestigious competition saw Hervey Bay's Ellyn Parker hook up the float and travel for two days with her big mare Rosalee on board, for the chance to compete against some of the best riders from around Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. After winning the Queensland State Championships for CDI advanced freestyle in Brisbane last year, all eyes were on the duo, and they didn't disappoint. In their first year competing at an FEI level, they placed second AOR (amateur owner rider) in the Prix St George (PSG) missing out on first place by only They.196%.won the AOR Intermediate 1 by almost 3%. In the open field Intermediate 1, with many exceptional and international experienced level riders, they placed 14th. A highlight, Ellyn said, was getting a 70% score from the judge during her Intermediate 1 test, the harder of the two tests, and being placed just behind riders who have travelled and competed overseas including at the world equestrian games and who are on “purpose bred horses”.
A HERVEY BAY RSL Community Grant has helped a local equestrian enthusiast go up against international competition at the 2022 Sydney CDI (Concours de Dressage International) dressage event.
A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $500 assisted the team in hiring a coach for the day, which they boarded at 5am during what ended as a minor flooding event for the Evenregion.with water lapping the bridges as they made their way south, they arrived at the Ipswich Turf Club, got dressed in their Highland Uniforms and tuned their instruments while waiting patiently for their turn to play under the cover of the horse Thestables.next hurdle they faced was two snare drummers pulling out of the competition which meant they could play for points but weren't eligible for a “Despitetrophy.this our comments were positive, saying that if we were actually competing, we would have done very well indeed,” said member Hugh McBroom. “We performed for two components; one being March, Strathspey, and a Reel, known as an MSR, and the other is called a Medley, which is a selection of tunes of different time signatures lasting between 3 to 5 minutes in length. “Two players from our band also competed in a higher grade with the Ipswich band, using dual registration, winning the Grade 3 Achampionships.”highlightofthe event, Hugh said, was all the bands coming together for one big performance at the conclusion of the competition. “There was a huge display of massed pipers and drummers coming together to perform traditional tunes for the guests.” The players boarded the bus at about 5pm thoroughly drenched and waterlogged but still full of enthusiasm for “Mostplaying.of the trip home was planning how we can compete in the OctoberheldChampionshipsAustralianbeinginSydneyon1.”
“It can also include controlling or threatening behaviour that causes the person being abused to be fearful, this is also called coercive control,” Kelly said.
HEAVY rain and player cancellations couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Fraser Coast Highlanders who competed at the Pipe Band Championships in Ipswich.
Facilitated by a female Police officer and qualified fitness instructor, RUBY can also link participants into existing local services and provide a place for them not only to increase fitness but to make friends, build relationships with Police and most importantly feel safe. This is only possible through the support of sponsors like the RSL.
“The funds received from the RSL pay for our qualified fitness instructor, provides appropriate clothing where required remembering women often flee abusive relationships with nothing, a morning tea is provided following the activity,” Kelly said “Further to this it also provides essential items for women leaving domestic and family violence.

Five generations of the family have now served or are serving, and Rick couldn't be prouder.
If any new residents to Hervey Bay and are Ex-Service, please call in to the SubBranch, introduce yourself, and have a chat as the Sub-Branch welcomes new members.Ifanyoneneeds assistance or knows of someone who does need help, please contact the Pension and Wellbeing section on 0741 849496. The address is 19-21 Torquay Rd, Pialba, on the second floor, Monday to Friday, 0900-1500 hrs. If on a weekend, please contact RSL Club reception for emergency contact.
Since Anzac Day, the Sub-Branch has held four Commemorations, which include Operation Rimau on July 10, Korean Veterans on July 27, VP Day on August 15, and Vietnam Veterans Day on August 18.
There were many missions with many different units over his 49 years of service, but Rick said the hardest posting was in Iraq in 2004 Rick spent seven months with the Australian Army Training Team Iraq, starting with training in Alkasik where they worked in 57 degree desert heat “Once Saddam Hussein had been captured all the training establishments were gone,” Rick said “Our mission was to train the Iraqis to get ready for upcoming elections ” It was the sort of place where absolutely anything could happen, Rick said.
18 With two generations of family before him having served in Army, Rick decided to follow in their footsteps and gain the financial stability he so badly desired On July 27, 1970, he left his job as a fitter and machinist apprentice and “enlisted.Ineverwent to Vietnam as planned but 49 and a half years later I got out,” Rick said with a laugh “Vietnam was still going but all they wanted at the time was infantry soldiers, so after Initial Employment Training in Inlgeburn (Sydney) I was posted to infantry (1 RAR) in Townsville ” Meet Warrant Officer Class 1 Eric (Rick) Charles James Brown who only retired from the army two years ago at the sprightly age of 68 and with a security clearance of “Top Secret Negative Vetting” His uniform and a poignant photo of him sitting in Saddam Hussein's chair holding an AUSTYRE Rifle is proudly displayed in the RSL foyer and is a reminder of his bravery in active service in Singapore, Solomon Islands, Malaysia and the worst of the campaigns – Iraq Rick's service history is long and varied, starting with 1 Recruit Training Battalion in Kapooka, followed by a posting to Singapore with Delta Company 6 RAR for over a year, when he came back to Brisbane and 6 RAR became the parachute Battalion for the army It was here that Rick's infantry service unfortunately came to an abrupt halt after breaking both knees on a failed parachute jump “On my 12th jump I had a malfunction with the parachute and broke both knees “Operational jumps can be as low as 1000 feet and they increase the speed of the aircraft to make the parachute deploy faster and my main parachute didn't work quite right, and the reserve would not deploy.
Although the services are small in contrast to Anzac and Remembrance Days, they nevertheless are just as important to remember them and the men and women who served in these theatres.
“I landed very hard; I've had 18 operations on my legs I'm fine now, but that stopped my infantry career ” Rick was reassigned as a clerk in the Army admin stream, but this was certainly no average desk job By 1997 he had joined the 4th Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery and became an integral part of running evacuation handling centres all over the world, rescuing Australians from war torn or politically unstable countries including the Solomon Islands and “CambodiaTherewere many highlights of my career, but this was certainly up there,” Rick said “I was the Admin Advisor to the Royal Solomon Island police but with my knowledge of evacuations they brought in HMAS Tobruk, and we got 600 people out overnight, my wife being one of them ”
“It was good for me to be able to talk to her and have her say to me, hey you have a problem” “I went and saw a psychiatrist and eventually that's how Mr Spencer came along ” The couple have two daughters, with the eldest married to a soldier and the youngest daughter's son also now serving in the Army
Bay veteran
The election was brought forward, and Rick's team made a hasty exit from the country two months earlier than planned
“It (the missio cut a bit shor that didn't m I'd seen some horrible things and I'd had enough so I was happy to go home ” Another highlight later in Rick's career was working as a Reversist with Army Headquarters, where he spent 10 years compiling a thorough record of serving soldiers and veteran's service history and injuries so they could get the assistance they needed when they got discharged
The Sub Branch office is open Monday Friday 0900 1230hrs All information is on the website at wwwherveybayrsl subbranch com au or call 41977477
Until next time take care and be happy
EXTRAORDINARY
SERVICE OF RICK Brown’s family had only ever rented houses in their life and rumour had it back then that if you joined the Australian Army and served in Vietnam you could get a war service home loan.
Brian Tidyman Hervey Bay RSL Sub Branch President Since the last edition of the Club Magazine the SubBranch has been busy with day-to-day business especially with Pensions and Wellbeing.
Rick knows first hand how important this is after recently welcoming his therapy dog Spencer to the family with thanks to funding from Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Spencer's role is to make Rick feel more at ease in public places and large crowds that make him anxious due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder “It was a great job I was fixing operational records of people who had served “When you get discharged and you need DVA, you need a complete story, you need to show that this is where you trained, this is what you did or if you got injured, so everything is recorded “So many people didn't do that, so I spent 10 years and went right back to early operations to ensure that soldiers had a correct record of their operational service Rick married the love of his life Kay on December 14, 1974, just four years into his service and says he would have been lost without her “Kay has been my sounding board for all of my career,” he said.
He believes a career in disciplinary services is a brilliant choice for and self reliance “It's good simply for the self satisfaction of knowing what you can achieve ” Rick is now a member of the Hervey Bay RSL Sub Branch and is a frequent visitor to the RSL with his best mate Spencer
As our membership increases so does the workload of these sections. We are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated team looking after the veteran community

“I watched speedway with my mum and dad all my life and always loved the sprint cars,” Connor said. “Kart racing was quite easy (at first) as Maryborough Speedway and the club there allowed me to have an initial practice after getting my first kart, so it was just a matter of learning when to accelerate, break and turn. “As I got more races in, I learnt how to drive using no brakes and use the turns to my advantage.” “I would love to end up racing professionally and be a mechanical engineer associated with racing and engine Fromdevelopment.”learningin an Arrow AX9 to now jumping in a top-of-the-line Benson race kart, the junior driver now gets up to speeds of 80km on the track – and he just loves it!
