YOUR CLUB REPORT

It's hard to believe the year is drawing to a close with 2026 just around the corner!

It has been at tumultuous year with the March 9 floods causing over $3 million in damages to your club and it's been a very long-winded process of working with insurers and builders to carry out repairs.

The exciting news is that we are slowly getting back to normal with new carpet now laid in Hervey House and the Sports Bar, and we have high hopes that the refurbishment of the reception area will be completed by Christmas.

Melbourne Cup festivities at all our venues were a great success especially here at the Club with 230 guests enjoying all the fun and frivolity of the colourful day.

It was also wonderful to see a big crowd of locals and visitors turn out for the Remembrance Day service at the Freedom Park Cenotaph on November 11. Turn to page 19 for more on Remembrance Day.

RSL Group staff are now gearing up for our very popular Christmas Day lunches with many of our venues already sold out for this special day, with capacity now only available at the Clubhouse.

Don't forget there are no public holiday surcharges at the RSL, Clubhouse and Craignish Country Club during the holiday period so if you're looking for an affordable meal over the holidays be sure to check out these venues.

The club held its yearly AGM at the end of October and despite the floods, the Hervey Bay RSL Group had a successful financial year.

I would like to congratulate staff, management and our committee for a tremendous year and members and guests for their ongoing support of our venues.

Well done to Memorial Club committee members Terry Clayton, Robert Garland, Ian Cox and myself as President on our unopposed re-election at the 2025 AGM.

Congratulations also to Ian Cox and Bob Ney on life membership as recognition for their dedication and commitment to the club over the past 10 plus years.

Sadly, we said goodbye to outgoing retiring Committee Member Bob Ney who played an integral part on the committee for 14 years. We thank Bob for his commitment, time, and passion to uphold the vision, mission and ideals of our club.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to new committee member Lyndon Anderson who has stepped into Bob's position.

Lyndon had a long and distinguished career in the Army having served in Bougainville, East Timor and The Middle East region, including Afghanistan. Throughout his career he commanded and oversaw major logistic units and managed the careers of soldiers within the Army.

His roles as Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Army and Defence Attaché provided insight into senior government processes and interdepartmental policy. He retired as a full Colonel in 2012 and settled in Hervey Bay with his wife.

There is no doubt Lyndon's wealth of knowledge and experience will be an asset to the Club Welcome, Lyndon!

Finally, I would like to wish our members, guests and staff a safe and merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Club in 2026!

FAREWELL RSL LEGEND

It is with mixed emotions that we farewell the Hervey Bay RSL’s longest-serving team member, Shona McMahon.

For an incredible 34 years, Shona has been a friendly face, a trusted colleague, and a true ambassador for everything the RSL stands for.

As she now embarks on a well-deserved retirement, we reflect with gratitude on her remarkable journey.

Shona first walked through our doors in 1991, intending to help out for “just one shift” to cover for sick staff before a big function.

At the time, the Club was a single level, with no gaming machines and old-time dancing on Friday nights was the highlight for entertainment.

Shona has witnessed and contributed to the Club's extraordinary growth, from 2,000 members to more than 40,000 members across the RSL Group today.

Throughout her career, Shona has worked in almost every department — bar, gaming, bottle shop, and reception — always bringing professionalism, warmth, and dedication to her role.

She has been a mentor to countless staff members and a role model to all who've had the pleasure of working alongside her.

We have been incredibly fortunate to have Shona as part of our RSL family for all these years, and her presence will be deeply missed.

On behalf of the RSL Management, Committee, and Staff, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Shona for her outstanding service, loyalty, and unwavering commitment.

We wish her every happiness in retirement and hope the next chapter brings her as much joy as she has given to others.

THAT'S A WRAP FOR HOSPICE FUNDRAISER

THE Fraser Coast Hospice Quilt and Craft Show 2025 had a phenomenal turn out with 730 visitors walking through the doors at Hervey Bay TAFE recently

The event was proudly sponsored by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program and raised an outstanding $14,000 for Fraser Coast Hospice's vital work providing fee-free palliative care to the local community.

Twenty-five talented stallholders showcased their craftsmanship across two days, creating a vibrant marketplace filled with unique handmade treasures, stunning quilts, and delicious local food offerings.

The centrepiece of the event was the spectacular quilt exhibition, featuring

more than 70 exquisite quilts from talented quilters across the Wide Bay and beyond.

Each piece represented countless hours of skill, patience and artistic vision, transforming the venue into a breathtaking gallery of textile artistry.

The overwhelming success of this year's show has already secured next year's dates, with the Fraser Coast Hospice Quilt and Craft Show 2026 booked for August 29 to 30.

Every dollar raised at the event directly supports Fraser Coast Hospice's mission to provide

dignified, fee-free care to terminally ill community members over 18 years of age.

The hospice operates as a six-bed purpose-built inpatient facility, creating a safe, welcoming space where clients and their families can feel supported during life's most challenging moments.

The success of events like the Quilt and Craft Show demonstrates the power of community partnership in supporting essential local services.

PEACE OF MIND FOR TORBAY COMMUNITY

RESIDENTS and visitors at Torbay Lifestyles and Care can now enjoy greater peace of mind, with life-saving equipment now installed at the Recreation Hall and The Club House.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program, both venues are now equipped with defibrillators, ensuring vital emergency response capability is close at hand.

These facilities are regularly used by village residents, visiting family and friends, and members of the public attending social events and community functions.

Members of the Torbay Lifestyles and Care Fundraising Committee said the addition of the equipment has provided reassurance to everyone on site.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the RSL for their generous donation of two defibrillators to our retirement village,” they said.

“Their ongoing support means the world to us, and we're deeply grateful for their continued commitment to the well being of our community”

WALKING TOGETHER FOR DEMENTIA AWARENESS

LOTS of Hervey Bay residents laced up their runners and showed support for the Torbay Lifestyle & Care’s annual Dementia Walk recently

The community event welcomed participants of all ages and abilities, offering a leisurely 2km walk through Pier Park, Urangan, or a scenic 5km route along the picturesque Esplanade

Proudly supporting the cause, the Hervey Bay RSL contributed a $3,000 community grant, helping to make the event possible

Our own RSL Memorial Club Committee Member, Mick Kruger, was there to join in the day's festivities

Torbay Lifestyles & Care Chief Executive Officer Carrie Chappell said the support played a crucial role in ensuring the event's success

“Dementia continues to impact so many individuals in our community not only those living with the condition, but also their carers, families, friends, and broader support networks,” Ms Chappell said

“Events like this play an important role in raising both awareness and much-needed funds to support those affected” Thanks to the generosity of the Hervey Bay community, the 2025 Dementia Walk raised over $5,600

PROGRAM 2025

What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the local community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that has a dedicated Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $5 million in donations, in-kind support and sponsorships over the past 10 years. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.

There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room. Application forms are available online at herveybayrsl.com.au or by phoning Kerrie Alexander on 41977466.

IN MEMORIAL GARDEN

MEMBERS of the Ingenia Hervey Bay War Memorial Committee have brought their vision of a War Memorial to life.

Built as a special tribute to all who have served, the new War Memorial Courtyard Garden features steel silhouette statues of Army, Navy and Airforce officers, a nurse and a dog.

Two flagpoles and a water feature also bring to life the message of remembrance.

The project took over two years to complete with financial and in-kind support from Ingenia Lifestyle, fundraising efforts by Ingenia residents and guidance from the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch to secure a 'Saluting Their Service' grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Chairman Jim Martin said the idea was to create an area for residents to use for quiet reflection as well as an impressive area to remind visitors of the sacrifice of those who served.

Landscape gardeners Donna Romeril and Janine

McLachlan volunteered their time and were given the challenge of designing the plantings, ensuring that they had significance, particularly to the Anzac Peninsula.

“They provided something that is nothing less than stunning,” Jim said.

“The curved garden edging draws you in and welcomes and embraces.”

The Hervey Bay RSL Memorial Club is proud to play a small part in the next stage of the memorial with the donation of a custom-made 'Lest We Forget' commemorative bench seat thanks to a $3000 Community Grant.

Jim said the seat will be 'the icing on the cake' of the memorial which will be used by over 600 residents.

“Many residents bring family and friends to the

community during the year, exposing them to our new space and reinforcing the message of remembrance and offering a seated area of reflection.”

A formal dedication for the memorial was held on September 6 with Hervey Bay RSL President Ray Eustace, Brigadier Bill Date and the Mayor, George Seymour, in attendance.

A Catafalque Party was provided for the dedication by TS Krait Navy Cadets, bagpipe music by Keir Welsh, the Last Post by Noel Anderson and the hymn and National Anthem sung by Carolyn Tulloch.

A MISSION TO HAVE FUN

SHOOTING FOR OLYMPIC GOALS TIME TO

A $5,000 Community Grant from the Hervey Bay RSL has helped make a lasting difference for local teenagers, enabling young people from all walks of life to attend the annual SU Beach Bash during the spring school holidays.

The week-long adventure brought together more than 80 teens on Hervey Bay's stunning foreshore for a mix of beach games, concerts, and creative challenges.

Back at camp, participants took part in lifesized Battleships, tribal competitions, and nightly reflections designed to build friendships and strengthen personal growth.

Scripture Union Beach Bash Team Leader

Thomas Payne said the RSL’s support created an invaluable opportunity to inspire the next generation with a positive message of responsibility, self-worth, and perseverance.

“Participants had the opportunity to engage deeply with the camp's spiritual program - free from the distractions of their phones - and reflect on life’s big questions in a safe and supportive environment,” Thomas said.

“They especially loved the day at Torquay Beach, where campers, including some who had travelled from out west, soaked up the

serenity of the ocean, played beach volleyball, swam, and built sandcastles together.”

Throughout the week, many participants shared how the experience had changed their outlook on life.

“One camper confided that before the camp, he had been experimenting with illicit drugs, but after spending time with our leaders and peers, he decided he wanted to make better choices for his future,” Thomas said.

'Another young woman shared that she had been struggling with anxiety and depression, but through the camp's supportive atmosphere, she found renewed hope and learned that help and encouragement are always available.”

SU Australia expressed heartfelt thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL for their generous support, which made this life-changing experience possible for so many young people.

HERVEY BAY’S

Erin Guy was 13 when she started pursuing Clay Target Shooting and hasn’t looked back

Now 20, Erin’s commitment to training and passion for the sport has seen the athlete represent Queensland in multiple state and national titles

When she’s not at work you will find Erin training at the Maryborough Clay Target Club.

A highlight of her career was representing Australia at the Universal Trench World Championships in France in 2024 and in Rome, Italy this year.

The Hervey Bay RSL is proud to support Erin on her journey with a $1500 grant in both 2004 and 2025 to assist with the costs associated with representing Australia at this prestigious shooting event

“Thank you to the RSL for their ongoing financial support,” Erin said.

Erin (pictured right) showed Aussie grit finishing 14th in the world at the 2025 event and took home a bronze medal in the ladies' team event alongside teammates Catherine Skinner and Kiara Dean.

“It was an amazing experience getting to represent my country for the second year in a row on the world stage,” Erin said.

“High performance shooting involves extensive time, travel and training and therefore, expense.

“The support is greatly appreciated and beneficial towards my Olympic shooting endeavours.”

“After four days of competition, the results weren't as good as last year when I placed sixth, but I'm thrilled to have won my first international medal alongside my fellow Australian teammates.”

We wish Erin all the best in her endeavours to shoot on the world state at the 2032 Olympic Games.

GOOD TIDINGS AT RSL CHRISTMAS LUNCH

MORE than 120 community members in need will have good company and a hearty festive meal on Christmas Day thanks to sponsorship by the Hervey Bay RSL and the incredible dedication of volunteers.

Each year, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre hosts the Hervey Bay RSL Christmas Day Lunch for isolated people who might otherwise spend the day alone.

HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson said the event provides not only a nutritious meal but also the priceless gift of companionship and inclusion.

“The lunch brings together volunteers and community members to create a joyful, welcoming environment where everyone is treated with dignity and warmth,” Tanya said.

“Guests are greeted by friendly hosts,

enjoy entertainment, and share stories over a traditional festive meal.”

Tanya said the initiative has proven to reduce social isolation, particularly among seniors, people experiencing homelessness, and those facing hardship, while promoting community connection and well being.

“Beyond one meal, the event symbolises the spirit of community care that HBNC promotes year-round through its neighbourhood programs and social enterprises.

“For many attendees, this event is the only social connection they will

The RSL sponsorship is used to cover essential costs such as catering, venue setup, decorations, volunteer coordination, and small gifts to ensure every guest experiences the joy and dignity of being part of a caring

Curriculum Support teacher Alyth Shaw said the event celebrates teamwork, critical thinking, and complex mathematical problem-solving.

First coordinated in 1983 by the Toowoomba and District Mathematics Teachers' Association (TDMTA), the Maths Team Challenge has grown into a prestigious event that gives primary students the opportunity to compete in the spirit of collaboration and excellence.

“It is more than just a competition—it's a platform for young learners to demonstrate perseverance, sharpen their reasoning skills, and enjoy the thrill of solving challenging maths problems with their peers,” Alyth said.

“The students tackled a variety of

mathematical challenges, working in teams to apply their skills in innovative and strategic ways.

“Problem-solving is a vital skill for the future, and it is inspiring to see these young minds rise to the challenge.”

This year's event was made special thanks to sponsorship by the Hervey Bay RSL which facilitated the purchase of a new trophy, medallions, and hiring trivia buzzes for fun rounds to break up the two events and prizes.

“Kawungan State School extends its heartfelt thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL, participating schools, volunteers, and Kawungan P & C, for helping to make the 2025 Fraser Coast State Schools' Maths Team Challenge a success.”

In addition to sponsoring the Christmas Day Lunch every year, the RSL is a longterm sponsor of Comfort Kitchen, HBNC's weekly free community meal.

Bookings for the lunch can be made via the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.

VETERAN GOALIE STEPS UP

BRAVING

icy winds and fierce competition, Hervey Bay’s Cathy Milijasevic proved that passion for sport doesn’t fade with age.

The veteran goalkeeper from the Hervey Bay Hockey Club helped her Queensland side to a win and a draw at the Over 70s Hockey Australia Women's Masters National Tournament in Hobart.

For Cathy, it was more than just another tournament - it was a celebration of endurance, teamwork, and love for the game.

“It was such a privilege to play at state level,” she said.

“The New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and ACT teams were fiercely competitive, with skill levels that surpassed youth and speed.”

Despite the biting Tasmanian cold, Cathy stood strong in goal.

“Goalkeeping at this level is both challenging and exciting,” she said.

“Defensive tactics can change in an instant — from quick stick and footwork to mid-air dives to stop a striker's shot.”

While her team didn't bring home a medal, they left the field with prideand plans already forming for the 2026 championship.

Cathy's journey was made possible through a $500 Community Grant from the Hervey Bay RSL, which helped cover tournament costs.

“I'm so grateful for the RSL's support,” she said.

“Playing at a national level is an unforgettable experience — it's about friendship, resilience, and the joy of competing with amazing women from across Australia.”

Congratulations, Cathy - a true inspiration to athletes of every age.

JUNIOR

RIDING HIGH AT INTERSCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS

THERE is no doubt that Hervey Bay’s Rosie Williams is truly dedicated to her sport.

The 18-year-old and her family recently travelled more than 2,000 kilometres - towing a horse float all the way to Sydney - to compete at the 2025 Australian Interschool Championships.

Representing Queensland through Riverside Christian College, Rosie and her pony Perfect took part in the prestigious event, which showcases Australia's best young riders across disciplines such as dressage, jumping, show horse, combined training, and eventing.

Organised by Equestrian NSW, the championships bring together talented riders from every corner of the country.

In her final year of school competition, Rosie finished an

SILVER DELIGHT FOR JUNIOR CRICKETER

IT was a week to remember for U12 junior cricketer Emily Adamson who represented the Wide Bay 10–12 Years Girls team at the Queensland Schools State Carnival in Brisbane recently

From the first ball of the competition, the Wide Bay girls were unstoppable.

Over five rounds, they swept aside every opponent including Sunshine Coast, Met East, South West, Met West, and Northern regions before entering the finals undefeated.

Emily, one of the team's two wicket keepers, played a crucial role throughout the carnival. Her focus behind the stumps kept Wide Bay in control and earned praise from teammates and spectators alike.

In a thrilling grand final, Wide Bay faced Met East once more.

Despite their best efforts, the girls

“We came away with unforgettable memories and learned so much more about the equestrian world,” Rosie said.

Rosie's journey was made possible thanks to the support of the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program, which contributed $1,500 toward her goal of competing at the national event.

“The RSL grant helped us prepare for the competition, covering travel expenses, nominations, feed for the horse, food for ourselves, and even time off work for my parents,” Rosie explained.

Emily was supported by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program with a $250 sponsorship to help cover the cost of the entry levy and accommodation.

Nate Burrows, 9, was selected to play in the Under 10 QLD Country Team at the National School Futsal Championships in Brisbane. Following an impressive performance at the Championships, Nate was recognised by National Selectors and has gained selection in the Australian Futsal Team to tour China in July 2026.

“The RSL has supported us in previous years too, and I'm so grateful for their contribution - it really makes a difference.”

Congratulations, Rosie! Your dedication and hard work are a credit to both your community and your sport.

ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS

MACK Dwyer isn’t letting his disability stand in the way of his passion for sport.

The 11-year-old from Hervey Bay lives with Autism, an intellectual impairment, Spina Bifida Occulta, hyper flexibility, speech difficulties, and ADHD. While these challenges impact his daily life, his mum Jodie says they don't define who he is.

Mack's determination recently earned him a place on the Wide Bay team for the 10–12 Years Track and Field Championships in Townsville which is a remarkable achievement that reflects his hard work and dedication.

To help him get there, the Hervey Bay RSL proudly awarded Mack a $250 community grant to assist with travel and competition expenses.

“Mack has worked incredibly hard with the support of Hervey Bay Special School to build his skills and confidence,” Jodie said.

“His selection is such an uplifting example for other young people with disabilities and their families.

“The RSL's support helped make this

opportunity possible, allowing Mack to focus on doing what he loves.”

Although Mack didn't take home a medal this time, he gained something even more valuable - lifelong memories and lessons learned.

“He came away with a deeper understanding of his sport, a newfound love for Townsville, and an inspiring sense of sportsmanship that went far beyond the track,” Jodie shared.

“Competing alongside talented athletes from across the state pushed him to new heights, and he's come home more confident, determined, and proud to represent his community.”

Well done, Mack!

A big congratulations to the following athletes who have been supported by Junior Individual Sporting Grants.

Neveah Trease, 12, was selected to represent Wide Bay at the Touch Football State Championships in Roma.

Well done, Neveah!

Nate Horman, 12, was selected to represent Queensland at the SSA National AFL Championships held on the Sunshine Coast. One of the highlights was taking on Victoria, the strongest team in the competition, and finishing the carnival with a bronze medal after a great effort by the Queensland boys!

Indigo Watson, 12, was selected to represent Wide Bay in the 10-12 years Wide Bay School Soccer team, playing in Brisbane earlier this year. Indigo dreams of being part of the Matildas squad one day!

Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President’s Report

Welcome to this edition of RSL Life!

It was wonderful to see such a large turnout for our Remembrance Day service on November 11 to honour the pain, suffering and sacrifice ex-servicemen and woman experienced while defending our country's freedom.

A special thank you to our guest speaker Lt Col Nick Bowden who is the New Zealand Army Liaison to the Australian Army. Thanks also to local dignitaries and school leaders for your role in laying the wreaths at this very special service.

It's been a very busy year for the sub-branch with membership now at 1834 which is an exceptional number

The Pensions and Wellbeing section have also seen a big increase in veterans seeking assistance from the RSL.

The Sub-Branch and Pensions & Wellbeing office will be closed over the Christmas period from December 19 to January 12. If anyone needs assistance or knows of someone who does need help, please contact RSL reception on 41977444 and they will put you in touch with an emergency contact.

We wish all our members are very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We'll see you all in 2026.
