YOUR CLUB REPORT
Members and guests would be aware of the devastation to your club caused by flooding to the region on March 9.
An emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was declared after parts of the Fraser Coast copped more than 400 millimetres of rain triggering flash flooding.
Unfortunately, the area surrounding the club was hit hard with our Ground Floor inundated with over 15cm of water, causing an estimated $3 million in damages.
I would like to offer my sincere thanks to RSL management and staff who had the arduous task of cleaning up and bringing the club back to point where we could continue trading.
To do this within 72 hours of the flooding occurring was incredible work by all.
Thank you to our members and guests for your patience and support while repairs to the building are underway.
These repairs are progressing well with a make-shift reception area installed, the main lift now in operation, the TAB has reopened, and Hervey House has re-opened for bingo.
We hope to see new flooring and carpet in these areas in the coming months.
Despite this major set-back, the Club has still been a hive of activity this quarter with St Pat's Day, Easter and Mother's Day celebrations.
The commemoration service of Anzac Day was of course a big day with large members of veterans and the community paying their respects in remembrance to the fallen and our ex-service men and women.
Over 900 meals were served at the RSL club with 354
meals served to veterans at the Gunfire Breakfast and over 552 meals served at the luncheon function.
That is before we opened to our members and guests at 1pm.
Our club honours and give thanks to all veterans who served in our armed services and pays respect to the fallen. Lest We Forget!
This quarter has also been a busy time for our strategic planning committee who made the difficult decision to divest the asset Bayswater Bar & Grill and Cellarbrations Bottle Shop to QVC (Queensland Venue Co), effective as of April 28.
Our focus is now on developing a solution for ongoing car parking issues at the RSL Club for all patrons and our disabled members, particularly with the ongoing developments on Main Street.
Your committee has endorsed to proceed with a development application (DA) for a multi-story car parking station on the western side of the club to secure car parking for our members and guests to enjoy your club into the future.
If you see me at the club, be sure to come and say hello.

LONG TABLE SET TO IMPRESS
SADLY, everyone will be impacted by cancer at some point in their lives, and this is exactly what inspires so many people to host an annual Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland.
One in two Australians are diagnosed with the disease before the age of 85 and CCQ want to significantly reduce that number through research and education.
The Hervey Bay RSL team has stepped up to help raise funds by hosting our own unique event called The Longest Morning Tea where every cuppa and sweet treat will make a life-changing difference to those affected by cancer.
Aptly named, the morning tea will be a magnificent sight to see with one long table spanning the length of the terrace, set with the most delicious and delectable sweet and savoury treats, accompanied by your choice of tea or coffee.
With everything from delicate macarons to classic cucumber sandwiches, Danishes, and of course scones with jam and cream, guests will have the best seat in the Club.
Join in all the fanfare of the day from 10am to 11.30am with tickets to highly sought-after raffle prizes on offer and entertainment by Trevor Judge.
Trevor will continue playing in the Club until 1pm, so why not shout yourself some lunch and stay on for some cool cover tunes from the 50s to 90s.
Tickets to one of the best morning teas in town are just $30 per head and every cent raised will go to CCQ.
Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to sit with a group of friends.
Don't delay, book your seat online or at RSL reception!
THERE’S lots of excitement brewing in the RSL bistro with the club’s talented chefs being given full creative license in the kitchen.
Executive Chef Mick Mielczarek said rather than having the Monthly Chef Selections offered in the past, his talented staff will create their own daily and weekly selections using seasonal produce and unique ingredients that only have limited supply.
The RSL employs chefs from around the globe so there's sure to be a vast array of cuisines on offer, inspired by the chef's traditions, personal style, and culinary innovation.
Members and guests will be able to view the selections on dedicated TV screens around the club from June 1.
“The idea is to give our great chefs the freedom to come up with their very own specials and showcase what they can do,” Mick said.
“Many of them have worked in top restaurants and hotels in Dubai so it will be a very exciting time for our patrons to try some different dish's from around the world.”
Mick said exciting plans are also underway to set up a full pastry kitchen.
The RSL is fortunate to have talented chefs who also specialise in pastries and can create unique and personalized desserts.
“This is an exciting opportunity because we will be able to make all our cakes and pastries in-house.
“It will also create a rare opportunity for our apprentices in Hervey Bay to add some pastry skills to their resumes.
“This is a very exciting time for our staff and our patrons.”
JOIN US for a special morning tea event to raise money for Cancer Council Queensland.
We are bringing everyone to a long table that will be stretching the length of the Terrace, filled with all your favourite treats!
But it’s not just about the food! We’ll also have entertainment with Trevor Judge and raffles. Trevor will be playing on afterwards until 1pm.

YARRILEE State School is on a mission to reduce the number of school students disadvantaged by hunger and poor nutrition by introducing a life-changing School Breakfast Program.
YSS is one of the biggest State Schools in Hervey Bay with about 740 students from Kindy to Year 6 and about 520 families in the school community.
Principal Matthew Bulger said many families are struggling to feed their kids due to the cost of living, complex family situations and financial hardship and although it's unimaginable, some kids do go hungry for the entire day.
The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program is helping to provide students with the best opportunity to make the most of their education and develop healthy eating habits by providing $15,000 in sponsorship to run the program.
Matthew said the sponsorship, in conjunction with Government funding for a Food Program Coordinator and P&C fundraising efforts, has meant that the school can purchase the groceries and cooking equipment needed to put
food in the kids' tummies four mornings a week.
Plus, take away packs for kids the teachers know won't have any lunch.
The breakfast is open to all students, a policy the school is passionate about.
“There are some students who don't come to school because they don't have any food at home and feel shame and embarrassment,” Matthew said.
“We know who those kids are, but they are not singled out The breakfast program is available to all students, so they come and engage with all the other kids”
Prior to the tuckshop being open for breakfast, Matthew said teachers and support staff were bringing in food from home to make sandwiches for some students, sometimes twice a day.
The children found learning difficult as a result of being hungry and the teachers and support staff having to make the food took up valuable learning time.
“The impact the Breakfast Program is having on the classrooms is huge,” Matthew said.
“The children are much more settled in the first part of the day – the breakfast program provides nutrition, but also a stable routine to start the school day.
“We can now proactively say to families doing it tough, hey, get them to school and we will feed them.”
The program is also providing student leaders with responsibility and life skills by helping in the kitchen, plus teaching the children manners, respect and self-worth
“The expectation is that they sit down at tables to eat, use their manners and clean up when you're done. We can set the routine.
“There's one boy who finds learning more difficult than others and who is regularly disengaged, but now I see him,

JAMBOREE ADVENTURE
Among them were four very excited members of the Hervey Bay Sea Scouts who were proudly supported by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program to attend the prestigious event
Sea Scouts Fundraising Chairman Nicole Charles said the kids had a fantastic week, enjoying everything from the mountain biking trails, water activities to a memorable trip to Australia Zoo
“Our scout group had an incredible time at the Jamboree in Maryborough, and we want to express our sincere gratitude for
MORE than 9500 scouts and volunteers converged on the Maryborough Showgrounds earlier in the year for the biggest event on the Australian Scouting calendar, AJ2025, the 26th Australian Scout Jamboree.
your generous sponsorship.
“The RSL's support made this amazing experience possible, and we thank you for your commitment to our young Scouts”
The event is only held every three years with a focus on actively engaging and supporting young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.

IT was an all-round winning trip for six members of Bayside Martial Arts who attended an international karate tournament in New Zealand recently

every day, stacking up chairs and helping clean up.
“It's just connection; he wants to feel important and that makes him feel important.
“You can't measure that in success.”
As the program continues to grow, so does the kids appetite. Matthew would love to hear from any local businesses who can help with donations of bread, fruit or other approved groceries. Phone 41977111.
The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program supported the students with a grant to assist with the cost of flights, accommodation and tournament entry fees.
Bayside Martial Arts Instructors, Renshi Amanda Behrendorff and Sensei Collin Behrendorff, said attending the tournament strengthened the student's health and personal development while also having a fantastic time doing what they love.
“All the parents of these children have
attributed karate to being the biggest positive impact in the students' lives,” Amanda and Collin said.
“The challenge of competing in karate tournaments and being chosen to compete overseas will continue to improve their confidence, resilience and respect, ensuring they continue to be well adjusted community members that contribute to society in a positive way.
“The trip was very successful, and the students performed so well, bringing home a bag of medals.”
Congratulations to all the competitors!
Yarrilee State School Principal Matthew Bulger gave Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club Vice President Ian Cox a tour of the tuckshop where everything for the Breakfast Program is made.
BINGO VOLUNTEERS DO DUNGA IN A DAY
THERE was no bingo but there was banter, a treasure hunt, costumes, games, jokes, food and plenty of laughs when the Hervey Bay RSL Wednesday bingo community volunteers were welcomed to the Dunga family recently
The team run bingo at the RSL each Wednesday with proceeds going to Rally for a Cause which raises funds to support locals impacted by life-changing medical diagnosis or other tragic circumstances beyond their control.
The Dunga Derby is the charities main fundraising event of the year which will see 55 teams and more than 250 people travel four days from the Coast to the Country while raising funds to support the local community.
In a show of appreciation for their dedication, RFAC treated the bingo volunteers to a special 'Dunga in a Day' mystery car rally which included being transported in Dungas for morning tea at Childers, lunch and games at the Woodgate Hotel before returning to the Bay with a better understanding of just what the Dunga Derby is all about.
The day started the same way for the bingo volunteers as it does each day on the annual Dunga Derby, with a breath test and games before donning their crazy costumes and setting off with no idea where they were going.
Rally for a Cause General Manager Scott Rowe said it was a delight to be able to treat the dedicated bingo volunteers to a taste of what the Dunga Derby is all about.
“They are a fantastic group who wear our Dunga Derby team shirts week in, week out, raising funds for the charity so that we can continue to help locals during some of the toughest times of their lives.
“It was most enjoyable for us to take them on their own mini Dunga in a Day and get to know them better and for them to ask questions and learn more about the event and the charity.”
THERAPISTS WITH HOOVES
THE huge smiles on the residents’ faces said it all when Jock Lindsay from Stable Mind Equine Assisted Therapy made a special visit to Kirami Home for the Aged recently.
The elderly residents couldn't wait to touch, smell and pat therapy horses King and Mousey, and Jock's service dog Piper, who were only too happy to lap up the attention.
The not-for-profit charity originally started in 2021 to bring better mental health to veterans and front-line responders by simply leading, grooming, patting, cuddling, and talking to the horses, all in the safe space of Jock's Burrum Heads property.
Animal therapy has been successfully used in the treatment of depression, anxiety, dementia and in Jock's case, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and is strongly supported by psychiatrists and psychologists.
The Scottish-born horse enthusiast is an ex-veteran of the special forces having served as a Clearance Diver for six years with the British Navy and six years with the Royal Australian Navy.
The RSL has supported RFAC since the charity first started in 2015 with the relationship growing into being a Gold Sponsor of the Dunga Derby, an Operational Sponsor of Rally for a Cause, including Wednesday's bingo proceeds, and a major sponsor of Rally Angels.
The RSL also enters the Silver AU Bullet and the Shake & Bake BA Falcon dungas that will once again tackle the four-day adventure this year.
Team sponsorship for Breast Intentions, Deadly Dungas and Bronxnation was also approved this year.
An exciting addition to this year's sponsorship is the RSL Group's Glass House Brewery which is this year's Sunshine Coast Dunga Derby Stubby Cooler sponsor.
Consequently, Jock was diagnosed with PTSD from his time in service.
The place he feels most at ease is beside his horses, which is why his psychologist pushed him to get the charity off the ground.
Since then, Jock has seen life-changing results in himself, his veteran clients, members of the community with disabilities, and now nursing home residents who all relish in their special time with the animals.
Kirami residents waited eagerly for their turn to pat the gentle giants with just the smell of the horses enough to bring back fond childhood memories of riding to school and working on the farm.
One resident smiled as she reminisced on a time when she rode her beloved broken Brumby named Tony to school
“When you got to school you had to take the saddle off and put it under the school and everyone would put their horses in a big yard for the day,” she said
“Then after we rode home, we had to milk the cows. It was hard work, but it didn't hurt us.”
Both the Hervey Bay RSL Services & Memorial Club and the Hervey Bay RSL
RFAC will this year exceed over $4 million in fundraising for the community and the Hervey Bay RSL is very proud to play a part in that.
The 2025 Fraser Coast Dunga Derby will be held from July 31 to August 3. Congratulations to all the teams involved and safe travels!
Sub-Branch are proud to support the incredible work of Stable Mind with a sponsorship of $500 each per month.
The grant goes towards vaccinations and vet bills, feed, worming, farrier services, and other costs associated with taking good care of horses King, Mousey, therapy Clydesdales Ringer and Mac, and therapy donkeys Quavo, Diego and Riff-Raff.
“The RSL and the SubBranch support is just phenomenal,” Jock said.
“I would be lost without it.”

PITCH FOR GRANT PAYS OFF
THERE is no doubt that cricket is a real hit in our region with three U12 teams, one’s under 14, one Under 16, six senior cricket teams across A and B grade and about 30 players in the Women’s Cricket competition.
However, with limited funding from local or state government, Queensland Cricket or Cricket Australia, the Hervey Bay Cricket Association was struggling to cover the day-to-day running costs of the Association and maintaining their facilities.
The Hervey Bay RSL has been a longtime supporter of the HBCA and is proud to announce a further threeyear sponsorship of $45,000 to give the association the financial boost they need.
HBCA president Nick Swan said the association is extremely grateful for the support the RSL provides to cricket on the Fraser Coast.
“The Hervey Bay RSL grant provides financial support in delivering cricket to many different members of the
WHAT A CHAMPION!
HERVEY Bay’s Breanna Taylor is edging one step closer to her goal of one
day playing Hockey for Australia.
The 16-year-old was recently selected to play for Queensland at the U16 National Hockey Championships in Adelaide, South Australia, where her team played six games with one win, three ties, and Breanna was also awarded with two Hockey Australia player of the game honours.
Breanna was supported by a $500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant which she said played a key role in making the experience possible.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the RSL for their generous support of my recent sporting event.
“The funds you provided helped cover travel expenses, accommodation, and team levy, allowing me to focus fully on competing and enjoying the experience.
“Thanks to your support, I was able to once again represent my state at a National Championships playing the sport I love with pride and gain valuable experience both on and off the field.” Mum, Carrie Taylor, said the
Fraser Coast Community,” Nick said.
“Without the support, the HBCA would be unable to deliver the dedicated women's competition's, uniforms for our junior cricketers and funds towards improving the quality of our grounds.”
Nick said the association's junior cricketers benefit from the grant, including the supply of uniforms and assistance with purchasing training equipment.
“This funding allows the HBCA to keep the cost of playing cricket affordable for our junior cricketers, which also allows growth of our game on the Fraser Coast.”
The women's Thursday night competition, which allows players of all abilities to get involved in cricket, has been hailed a great success.
“It is hoped that with continued funding, this competition may one day grow into a dedicated women's competition on the Fraser Coast.”
The first payment of the 2025 grant has seen commencement of muchneeded ground maintenance on two of the club's turf ovals and the introduction of an annual maintenance schedule for the main playing field, Kieth Dunne Oval.
“This includes top dressing, fertilising, aeration, and soil testing.
“In the long term this will be of benefit to all cricketers on the Fraser Coast because we will be providing quality facilities.
“Thank you, Hervey Bay RSL, for your support of cricket on the Fraser Coast.”
championships was an amazing opportunity for Breanna to build her confidence, learning through elite coaches and assisting her in achieving her goal to one day play for Australia through her hard work and dedication to the sport that she loves.
“This type of assistance (RSL grant) helps students believe in themselves and that they can achieve their goals by receiving the assistance to go and play in these top-level championships against other high-quality athletes around the country.
“Not too many kids get this type of opportunity to represent their state in the sport they love.”
Well done, Breanna!
FAMILY FUN IN BURRUM
HUNDREDS of locals and visitors converged on the beautiful Burrum Heads for the annual three-day Easter Fishing Competition with lots of family fun, random super draw prizes and of course the chance to fish and win.
The Hervey Bay RSL has been a major supporter of the event for the past few years with sponsorship of $4000 to cover the cost of the club's liability insurance.
Club member Judy James said the notfor-profit club encourages residents to meet like-minded people who enjoy fishing and boating with weekly weighins and a free barbecue for members.
The Easter competition is the club's major fundraising event of the year which not only tops up the club's funds but also boosts the local economy.
“We were fortunate to have fantastic weather for the Easter Weekend of 2025,” Judy said.
“We attracted over 365 participants, 200 being seniors and 165 juniors.”
There was also a heavy focus on sustainability at the event with information stalls hosted by Queensland Park and Queensland Fisheries.
Anglers were encouraged to weigh-in live fish and place them in the on-site tank for entrants to admire.
“It was great to see that 71% of all fish weighed in were released!”

SEAGULLS HONOUR OUR ANZACS
It was an exciting day for the Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls Rugby League Club on April 7 after launching their inaugural ANZAC Day jersey in honour of our local veteran community
Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club Vice President Ian Cox, Committee Member Terry Clayton and RSL SubBranch President Brian Tidyman, were
honoured to attend a special unveiling at Freedom Park.
As veterans, Ian and Terry were delighted to be presented with a framed edition of this very special jersey in appreciation of the RSL's Platinum Sponsorship of the Club, and Brian received a jersey in honour of the veteran and Sub-Branch community.
The jersey – with the symbolic light horse brigade on the front and poppies on the back - was launched ahead of the club's action-packed Anzac Day round held on Saturday, April 26.
Seagulls President Sam Schooth said it was important to not only thank the RSL for their ongoing support as major sponsors but to also recognise and honour the regions veterans.
He said the creation of the ANZAC jersey and ANZAC Day round, holding a
CONNECTED WITH THE COMMUNITY
A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant is helping to keep the Fraser Coast Trefoil Guild connected with members and the community through the donation of a new laptop.
The Trefoil Guild is the adult section of Girl Guides. The group keep the spirit of the Guide Promise by serving the community and giving support to Guiding.
The Fraser Coast Trefoil Guild is a small but active group who have close links and give support to the Hervey Bay Girl Guides and serve the community by

“People have something to connect with the club and the round, and we have a great partnership with the RSL, so we thought it was fitting to put it all together and make an event that suits the community,” Sam said.
“We need awareness around the fact that we have one of the largest veteran communities in Australia, and I don't think this has ever been done before in the BRL (Bundaberg Rugby League).

“We did the commemoration last year with the light horse regiment and this year we wanted to do it bigger and better.”
Hervey Bay RSL Vice President and Veteran Ian Cox commended the Seagulls on their efforts, adding that there are many similarities of military life to sport such as camaraderie, mateship and never letting your mate down.
“As the lead of the donations committee we are a very big sponsor of kids in sport and the Seagulls do that in bucketloads,” Ian said.
“You build that friendship with mates, and you know they have your back and it's exactly the same on the footy field. It's brilliant.”

The donation of the laptop means that the funds raised will continue to go back to these charities, rather than having to pay to replace the old worn one.

PROGRAM 2025
What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the local community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that has a dedicated Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $5 million in donations, in-kind support and sponsorships over the past 10 years. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.
There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room. Application forms are available online at herveybayrsl.com.au or by phoning Kerrie Alexander on 41977466.

WAR WIDOWS’ GUILD OF HERVEY BAY
Meet at RSL on 1st Monday of the month at 10am.
A DAY TO REMEMBER
IN THE early hours of April 25, ex-service men and women and current serving personal pinned their medals proudly to the left of their chest, ready for the days Anzac Day services.
A symbol of their service and sacrifice for Australia.
The Dawn Service March stepped off from the RSL with just veterans making their way to the Freedom Park Cenotaph.
“The Dawn Service is the ex-services parade,” said Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman.
“It's the one where we remember our mates
“The Main Service is for the public to pay their respects and that's why we only allow veterans to march in the Dawn Service.
“We all lost mates and that's something we all unfortunately have in common.”
School groups, service groups and community leaders lead the way in the Main March to the cenotaph where they joined a crowd of thousands who turned out to pay their respects to the fallen.
A moving performance of Hallelujah by Fraser Coast Anglican College student Mia Hinsch was a highlight of both services.
After the dawn service, veterans gathered at the RSL for a private Gunfire breakfast to raise a glass or two to their fallen mates, tell tales and exchange yarns.
The RSL also hosted a special Anzac Day Luncheon for veterans and their guests following the main service.
All the fun and frivolity of two-up in Hervey House later in the afternoon topped of a poignant but wonderful day of commemorations at the Hervey Bay RSL.
Lest We Forget.
