YOUR CLUB REPORT

I would like to sincerely thank all the members and visitors who have renewed their membership or have recently joined our club.

Any member who joined or renewed before July 25 received a free ticket for a chance to win a new car, or a share in $1000 cash prizes. The total prize value was over $38,000. Congratulations to lucky member Louise Fisher on winning the Toyota Yaris Cross.

Most members and guests are aware of the damage caused to your Club by the March 9 floods.

The refurbishments are progressing but not as quickly as we anticipated. We would like to assure our members that we are doing everything we can to get the club back to a new and improved pre-flood look.

We look forward to a having a new Anzac Bar, fresh carpet laid in Hervey House and new flooring in the reception area soon.

Works have started on new cabinetry to house SubBranch memorabilia in the foyer which has been very much missed by our patrons since the flood.

Thankfully, the Sub-Branch's irreplaceable memorabilia were unaffected with water just lapping the bottom of the cabinets.

There was lots of excitement when the escalators were turned back on for the first time since March,

with the bonus of strip lights now lighting up each side.

The main service lift has had ongoing repairs and is now also back in full-time operation.

On behalf of RSL management, committee members and staff, the RSL Club extends a big thank you to members and guests for their patience and support during these unexpected refurbishments.

We look forward to celebrating all our special dads and father-figures on September 7 with a special buffet breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Club.

Before we know it, the Melbourne Cup and Christmas will also be upon us.

These functions are very popular so I would advise booking your table early to avoid disappointment. Ray

RSL BINGO HEROES

IT’S an incredible achievement to stay in a paid role for 37 years but it's beyond exceptional when those years have been spent as a volunteer raising funds for local charities.

Hervey Bay RSL Wednesday community bingo coordinator Paul Ninnes celebrated the magnificent milestone in May and has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Over the years Paul and his dedicated

volunteers, including his wife Blanche, have raised over $1 million for numerous charities including Rally for a Cause and Hervey Bay Special School.

The life-long Maryborough resident and former Endeavour Foundation employee of 18 years said for many of the dedicated players, bingo at the RSL each week is their main social outing.

“I love volunteering each Wednesday. The players that come in every week aren't just bingo players; they have become family,” Paul said.

“I can't remember the number of birthdays, Easters, Christmas times, family milestones we have celebrated together.

J&T BACK ON THE ROAD

“It's their day out and bingo is just the excuse They come to enjoy the company of friends and familiar faces, and we make sure we have a laugh and a good time”

With up to 200 players each week, Paul has embraced technology changes to keep bingo current and as popular as ever.

“I first got involved in bingo when I went with my grandmother when on holidays.

“These days the majority of players use an electronic tablet to play, so even bingo is moving with the times.”

Fellow bingo volunteer of nine years

Jenny Sanderson said Paul does an incredible job.

“We can't sack him,” she said in jest.

J&T SUPPORTING Homeless are back on the road with flash new wheels thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.

Josie Street and her team of volunteers have been supported by the RSL for the past four years with monthly shopping vouchers to the total of $14,400 each year.

The sponsorship also includes exclusive use of an RSL van to do their food deliveries.

Sadly, the charity suffered a major blow when the van - and all their donated goods insidewas inundated in the RSL car park during the March floods caused by Cyclone Alfred.

The RSL has now replaced the van and all the contents including tents, blankets, pillows, toiletries, backpacks, and groceries.

“Thank you to the RSL for all their support; it really has been absolutely fantastic, and it just makes such a big difference to our charity,” Josie said.

“We couldn't keep doing this without them.”

The van is used every Tuesday and Thursday to deliver food and essentials to over 150 people, many being families who are sleeping rough through circumstances beyond their control.

Thank you to Josie and her volunteer team for their devotion to helping less fortunate members of our community.

“Everybody loves him, he has them eating out of his hand. They all come through the doors each week and kiss and cuddle him.”

As well as commemorating years of volunteer work, Blanche also celebrated her 70th birthday surrounded by her bingo family on July 16.

The two bingo super stars will also celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in February 2026.

“As long as we are happy and healthy we will continue to be involved, we love it and the people we see every week.

“We couldn't do it without the wonderful support of the RSL management and the other volunteers.”

HAVING A YARN FOR CHARITY

AN RSL community grant of $800 has provided Fraser Shores Retirement Village Knitting for Charity group with enough to material to continue their wonderful charity work for a further 12 months.

The group started with a scarf knitting competition in 2008 and quickly evolved into a charity group where the ladies share their creativity for a good cause.

Since then, they have created beautifully knitted toys, rugs and blankets for various charities including the Forget Me Not Orphanage in Nepal, Fraser Coast Hospice, Hope in a Suitcase, local hospitals, nursing homes, defence force personnel in Afghanistan and underprivileged children in Fiji.

Fraser Shores Resident's Association President Chris Holt said the grant has had a significant impact on the group.

“All the ladies in the group are

seniors and they were purchasing the material out of their own pockets,” Chris said.

“The grant means that the ongoing financial outlay for them has been eased and the community benefits with rugs and toys being donated to those in less fortunate situations.

“Thank you, RSL.”

COMFORT IN NEW MURAL

THE installation of a hand-painted mural at Masters Lodge aged care has ignited memories of living in the country for elderly residents and those living with dementia.

The beautifully painted masterpiece was the work of local artist Paul Pettersson, and the cost of the mural was covered by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.

The project was headed up by aged care worker Linda Stokes who said seeing the joy the Australian Landscape has given the residents has been the biggest highlight of her 30-year career in aged care.

“I will admit I had a tear when the residents were watching us put up the mural because their facial expressions spoke 1000 words,” Linda said.

“The non-verbal residents (due to dementia) facial expressions were the

undoing of me, and it touched Paul.

“The time and effort put into obtaining the grant, designing the artwork, numerous called/emails/ texts between Paul and myself were so worth the look on their faces.

“I cannot thank RSL grants committee enough for choosing us and a massive thank you to Paul for his generous donation of his time and materials, and volunteer Amanda Guiver for all her support.”

Linda said it was wonderful to see new stimulation and interaction between residents as they stopped to admire the mural and study each component of it.

She said projects like this are important

BOWLERS ROLL IN FOR CARNIVALS

to combat loneliness, depression and limited mobility, and this mural did all that and more.

“The residents stop at the mural and talk about the birds, and the Ute is the focal point for a lot of the men while the colours and fine details are the focus for the woman.

“They stop and engage with the artwork

THERE has been a hive of activity at the Urangan Bowls Club recently with a massive Ladies Fours Carnival and the club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

The Hervey Bay RSL was proud to be a major sponsor of the events which saw bowlers from all over Queensland attend

The bowls club is well-known for its fantastic hospitality and facilities with two terrific covered carpeted greens to allow the bowlers to play rain, hail or shine.

President Lynda Kattenberg said the week-long anniversary celebrations were a great success with 20 teams of four vying for the top prize in the ladies' fours and 170 members and guests enjoyed all the festivities of the special anniversary dinner.

Even better, the Urangan Bowls Club team walked away with first place and runner up in the Ladies Fours Carnival. Amongst the special guests during the

celebrations were Steve and Lewis Robb from the Robb family who were the founders of the club back in 1975.

“The whole 50th anniversary week was a great success,” Linda said.

“Thank you to the RSL for their support of the club especially at such a special time being the club's 50th anniversary.”

The next big event on the bowls club calendar is The Whale Carnival which will once again be proudly sponsored by the Hervey Bay RSL.

This two-day carnival attracts lady competitors from around the state and is a highly competitive event.

Join in the fun and nominate! Visit www.uranganbowlsclub.org.au.

by finding and identifying various Australian birds and animals hidden in the painted landscape and this encourages conversation and memory stimulation through the technique of reminiscence.”

The Hervey Bay RSL was proud to play a part in bringing this inspiring project to fruition.

GOLDEN PERFORMANCE

FIVE members of Rippers Gym have had the experience of a lifetime after fulfilling their dreams of representing Australia on the world stage.

Hervey Bay's Braxton, Paige, Seb, Jai and Ollie all had outstanding results at the World Muay Thai Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, earlier this year after collectively bringing home five gold and two bronze medals.

The team was supported by a $6250 Hervey Bay RSL Community grant which helped pay for the team's flights.

At a cost of over $3400 per person, Ripper's owner Courtney Rainbow said the grant made the Australian representation possible.

“A massive thank you to the Hervey Bay RSL for giving our team the opportunity to represent Australia on the world stage,” Courtney said.

“Your support helped make this dream a reality and we're proud to say we brought home five gold medals and memories that will last a lifetime.”

Courtney said the team's performance was unforgettable!

“We're so proud of each and every one of these athletes for their heart, skill, and sportsmanship on the international stage.

“We've all learnt so much from this journey and we can't wait to bring the new techniques and knowledge into our sessions back home.”

The team are now looking forward to the World Championships later this year.

SPORTING A NEW LOOK

MEMBERS of the Wide Bay Veterans Over 60s Cricket Club are sporting a new look with the help of a $1500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant.

The funds helped purchase playing kits consisting of shirts, pants, caps and travel shirts for the club’s Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 competition teams.

Wide Bay Veterans Cricket Over 60s is a community cricket club that provides an opportunity for seniors, both men and women over the age of 60, in the Wide Bay region to engage in and play cricket.

As well as playing competitive cricket, member Dave Dansie said the club fosters camaraderie, promotes physical and mental well-being, and facilitates social integration among senior members of the community.

GOLFING CHAMPS

The new playing kits also play a big part in inclusivity.

“The travel shirts are worn for travelling, as well as for pre-and-post-match activities, either when away or at home,”

Dave said.

“The grant has helped promote Veterans Cricket to senior members of our community and encourage them to participate in the game.

“This in turn aids in benefiting their health and fitness, whilst allowing them to engage with people of similar age both in the local area and from other regions”

Dave said Veterans Cricket is a fastgrowing sport throughout Australia, with

intrastate, interstate and international competitions occurring on a regular basis each year.

“In the Wide Bay area, which encompasses Bundaberg, South Burnett, Maryborough and Hervey Bay, Wide Bay has some 45 players registered with Queensland Veterans Cricket in the Over 60 Divisions.

“The Queensland Veterans Cricket Over 60s competitions involve approximately

JUNE was a big month for the Shingles family with sisters Allira and Tasmyn both selected to represent Wide Bay at the Queensland Golf Championships in Brisbane.

Mum Karleigh said both the girls had a fantastic time andin her final year in the 10–19-year-old age group - Allira was selected to play for Queensland at the National championships on July 27.

This was Tasmyn's second year of being selected for the QLD state Golf championships in the 10–12 age division.

Tasmyn enjoyed the team environment and had some massive hits for her age.

She is excited to keep developing her game.

Both girls were supported with a $250 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant for the Wide Bay selection and a further $500 for Allira to attend the Nationals. The grant helped cover the cost of player levies, uniforms, and accommodation.

IT BOOST FOR EX-SERVICE WOMAN

THE day-to-day running of the Hervey Bay Ex-Service Women’s Association has been made easier with a new laptop and accessories.

The group was successful in gaining a $1500 grant to purchase a laptop and bag, printer, toner and MS Office through the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program. Prior to introducing this technology, the association had still been reporting their day-to-day business proceedings on paper.

President Julie Chapple said the new technology will enable the group to have better communication, better record keeping and ensure they stay in line with auditable governance of the group's proceedings.

300 to 350 players aged 60 and older and we play against other teams from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Lockyer and Redlands in home and away competitions.”

Anyone interested in playing Veterans Cricket in either the Over 60 or Over 50 competitions can email Dave at dajodan@westnet.com.au

NEW THREADS FOR FUTSAL FUN

MEMBERS of three new Hervey Bay All Abilities Futsal teams are looking sharp in their new club shirts purchased with a $1400 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant.

There is no mistaking who is playing for what team now that members of the Rolling Thunder, Thunderstruck and Mixed Rolling Thunder teams each have the name clearly marked on their shirts.

Team manager Sharon Hay said the shirts also see members represent their community with pride at regional and national competitions.

The futsal club is all about having fun with likeminded people who share the same passion and meet new friends while keeping fit.

“Our commitment extends to making futsal accessible to all local players, regardless of their background.

“The grant gives our players the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial constraints.

“Thank you, RSL.”

“We strive to create a supportive environment where players can grow both in their athletic abilities and as individuals, preparing them for future success in sports and life,” Sharon said.

GRANT HELPS KEEP THE FAITH

THE St John’s Anglican Parish Church in Hervey Bay depends on volunteers and donated gardening equipment to maintain the facilities and grounds.

Sadly, that was made difficult for the group after essential groundskeeping equipment was stolen recently.

The Hervey Bay RSL donations committee didn't hesitate to assist when the church reached out for help to replace the items including a pressure cleaner, edger and two batteries.

Church Warden Robin Rayner said volunteer Charlie Hall, who cares for the grounds, was extremely grateful for the replacement items.

“He is a retired person who donated his time, and these tools will make his work safer and also support the other volunteers who maintain the grounds,” Robin said.

“It's important to our congregation that our facilities are well maintained with significant events like funeral receptions and weddings held at the church.

“We want to provide a safe and attractive facility for the elderly and children, as well as different community groups which use the buildings and grounds, and the new equipment enables us to do that.

“We are very grateful for the RSL's support.”

STEPPING ONTO THE WORLD STAGE

HERVEY BAY Performing Arts College dancers Danielle Ibbetson, Acaycha Corrigan and Sienna Edmondstone shined on the world stage recently.

The girls were all selected to represent Australia at the Global Games in Hawaii where their team placed top three in all the dances completed including hip hop, open jazz and open contemporary.

A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant assisted the girls with the cost of travel and accommodation. Well done, girls!

AFL TALENT SHINES

BRISBANE Lions Academy player

Monique Corrigan was her side’s top draft prospect coming into the year and has proven she’s a force to reckon with.

Monique has overcome a substantial amount of travel throughout her junior career to get to where she is today, with a four-hour drive from her home to Brisbane at least twice a week for training.

The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants committee was proud to support Monique with a $1500 grant to help pay for fuel and accommodation.

The young athlete has been training with AFL QLD in the Level 3 Brisbane Lions Academy team for the past year and is also a part of their level 4 program which sees her play multiple games in Melbourne, Tasmania and in Brisbane.

She was also selected to play in the AFLW National All Stars team and travelled to Melbourne to play with girls from all over Australia, which Monique said was an incredible opportunity.

“It was such an amazing experience, especially to play with the girls who are at the level and even higher and just to push yourself and prove to yourself that you can play at that level.”

Congratulations, Monique!

PROGRAM 2025

What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the local community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that has a dedicated Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $5 million in donations, in-kind support and sponsorships over the past 10 years. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.

There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room. Application forms are available online at herveybayrsl.com.au or by phoning Kerrie Alexander on 41977466.

BREAKING BARRIERS AND RECORDS

The Clubhouse Hervey Bay and the Hervey Bay Golf Club turned pink for a powerful cause recently with about 200 golfers and 180 luncheon guests all turning out to support mental health awareness.
