YOUR CLUB REPORT

Welcome

to

the festive edition of RSL Life!

In the blink of an eye 2024 has flown by and we are again preparing the RSL, Bayswater, Salt Café and The Clubhouse to host our traditional Christmas Day luncheons.

The December-January period is a joyful time, and we love seeing family and friends coming together for a nice time out at our venues.

There are no public holiday surcharges at the RSL and Clubhouse during the holidays but be sure to make a booking online or by phoning the club as seats will fill quickly.

The RSL Giving Tree will take pride of place in reception once again this year with members and guests encouraged to place a gift under the tree or buy a bauble, with all donations going to the Combined Churches group who assist members of our community that are doing it tough.

Our highly anticipated Melbourne Cup function was a great success with a sold-out crowd enjoying all the fashions, fun and frivolity that the colourful cup day is known for.

The RSL Memorial Club AGM was also held on Saturday, October 26 and many thanks to members who attended the meeting and those who took the time to vote for the one position on your committee.

I am pleased to announce that current serving Club Committee members Mick Kruger, Chris Richards, and Gerard O'Connell were re-elected unopposed, and a big welcome to newly elected members Rick Brown and Fiona Richards (elected unopposed).

Thank you to the committee for their commitment to ensuring the club remains successful now and into the future.

during the renovation period, and we thank you for your patience and support during this time.

To all our members and guests, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. See you at the Club!

Empowering

Special thanks to long time outgoing committee member John Kelsey for his years of valuable service and dedication to the club.

Thank you, John.

Sadly, we said our final farewells to Kevin Morgan who passed away in October. Kevin was a valued and respected member of our committee, a life member and a friend to many. He will be sorely missed.

There are some exciting times ahead for the club with the long-awaited extensions to the terrace now completed.

The extensions are part of the 2016 Master Plan approval drafted by the RSL strategic planning committee to offer members and guests the very best venue for food and entertainment now and into the future.

The extra 350sqm of floor space will not only allow for an extra 100 seats, but it will also achieve more efficiency for kitchen staff with a new cold room and massive freezer now located next to the kitchen on Level 1, rather than on the ground level.

For our members who enjoy a dance when we have live bands on, we have also added a permanent dance floor to the bistro area.

The extension to the new bar and toilets has been well received by our members and guests.

We appreciate that there have been some disruptions

OUT & ABOUT AT

YOUR CLUB

The dance floor in Hervey House has had a workout over the past few months with brilliant entertainers like the Boom Box 80s show, Beatle Magic and the very popular Tones and I giving our members and guests nights to remember

But stay tuned, there’s plenty more entertainment to come with New Year’s Eve and Australia Day just around the corner

Visit the club's website to book your ckets for upcoming shows like Christmas morning melodies with Steve Hill, the Killer Queen Experience and many more over the December-January holidays

There were neon colours, big hair, mullets, spandex, and high waisted jeans as fair as the eye could see for the soldout Boom Box 80s show in Hervey House.

The fast-paced seamless mashup of pure 80s rock and pop took guests back to a time when pagers and parachute pants were all the rage.

When a show sells out within the first few hours of going live you know it's going to be a cracker of a concert, and Tones and I certainly didn't disappoint. The pop-up show lived up to the hype with a crowd of all ages enjoying the ARIA Award winners once-off concert in Hervey House.

The dance floor was rocking in Hervey House with guests getting down to one of the most authentic tribute acts around, Beatle Magic!

LUNCHEON

The Melbourne Cup is of course the most celebrated racing event in the country and us Aussies know how to celebrate.

Guests at the Hervey Bay RSL Cup Day luncheon did just that with lots of bubbles and beer, fashions on the field, a delicious 2 course luncheon, and all the fun and frivolity of sweeps and rivalry between friends to see who backed the winner

Thank you to all our members and guests for a wonderful day

After a moving ceremony at the Pialba cenotaph, about 200 guests returned to the RSL for a Remembrance Day luncheon hosted by the RSL Sub-Branch There were lots of laughs with friends old and new exchanging yarns and raising a glass to fallen mates See page 19 for more photos

TWELVE members of the Burrum District Outrigging Canoe Club represented the Fraser Coast with pride at the Outrigger Canoeing World Sprint championships in Hilo, Hawaii, recently

The Australian selection meant that each member had the opportunity to represent their club at the highest level, competing against 3000 outriggers from around the world.

The selection came at a considerable cost of $3715 per person but the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program was proud to provide some financial relief with a $3500 grant to go towards the team's travel, accommodation and registration fee costs.

Member Brad Freeman thanked the RSL for the support and said it was exhilarating to compete on the world stage.

“Representing our club and country at a world event was by far the greatest thing

I was looking forward to, as well as competing in a friendly environment and meeting people from many countries who share the same passion for outrigging as I do,” Brad said.

“Seeing the different cultures and how outrigging forms a part of that culture was just the icing on the cake.

“The support of the RSL club assisted greatly in providing the means to attend this magical event.”

Members Colin and Michelle Holden said competing at this level is something they will never forget.

“For a small club like Burrum to have 12 members attend and compete is a wonderful achievement and the support

from the RSL was instrumental in our going and greatly appreciated.”

Member Mike Williams was a standout competitor in the Men's Platinum 75 to 80 age group V1 500m sprint, ranking third in the world and returning home with a bronze medal.

“Challenging myself and competing against the best in the world was the driving force for me,” Mike said.

“To come home with a bronze medal was an absolute bonus. The support of the RSL assisted greatly in getting there.”

JUNIOR FISHING FUN OUTRIGGERS 'TAKE IT AWAY' IN HAWAII

THERE was a sea of blue club shirts on the beach opposite Dayman Park in Urangan recently with adults and children casting a line for the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club’s 4th annual Junior Whiting Competition.

It’s the second year the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program has supported this terrific community event for juniors, and others throughout the year, with a grant of $2000 to cover the club's liability insurance.

A club representative said sponsorship like this helps the club host the event for free so local families can take part without having to worry about the cost.

The club supplied prizes,

lunch and even the yabbies for bait.

“The insurance cover gives our club the opportunity to work with our new members, their families and the broader community without imposing any entry fees or even any charges whatsoever to young families of Hervey Bay,” he said.

“The Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club would sincerely like to thank the Hervey Bay RSL, for generously paying our insurance for the club

once again this year.”

New members are more than welcome to join in the fun of being part of an active, family and community minded club. The club also host junior camps, coffee and chat mornings at the RSL for the ladies, and sausage sizzles and weigh-in days at various parks around Hervey Bay.

Visit the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club's Facebook page to find out more.

The Men's Master 60 to 70 age group V6 500m sprint ranked 21st in the world, the Men's Master 60 to 70 age group V6 1000m turns ranked 18th, the Women's Master 60 to 70 age group V6 500m sprint ranked 20th, the Women's Master 60 to 70 age group V1 500m sprint with Michelle Holden ranked 22nd.

In the Women's Platinum 75 to 80 age group V1 500m sprint, Betty Scorey ranked 4th in the world.

A big congratulations to the championship team!

SAFEGUARD FOR VETERANS

THE Hervey Bay & District Veterans Association veterans retreat at Lenthalls Dam is the perfect place for current and ex-service personal to relax and get away from it all.

The only problem is there's no phone reception for 5km which could put lives at risk in an emergency.

President Mick Sinclair said the retreat is in a “dead spot” surrounded by forest and with predominately senior members, so it's important to have a lifesaving defibrillator on hand.

The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program was more than happy to assist with a $1500 grant to purchase a Semi-Automatic defibrillator for the veterans to have on site.

“We feel the need for this device as many of our members and guests have had heart/cardiovascular issues and are in the older age group,” Mick said.

“The time lapse between summoning aid and the arrival of an ambulance or helicopter medivac could be some considerable time.

“A portable defibrillator on site could mean the difference between life and death.”

The AED analyses the heart rhythm and delivers an electrical shock to victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest to restore the heart to normal rhythm.

It's user-friendly and provides easy to understand visual and voice prompts guide the rescuer through the resuscitation process.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST

MOWING the club s surrounds with push mowers is now a task of the past for members of the Wide Bay Remote Control Powerboat Club thanks to a $4000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant

The dam and the two acres of land they use for club meetings, racing, camp outs and events are on private property in Dundowran and part of the lease agreement is that the WBRCSB members maintain the grounds.

Up until now, club secretary David Penfold said members had been using push mowers and one small ride on to get the job done.

“This was a huge task and almost impossible to keep up with in the warmer months,” David said.

Having to mow for hours on end, especially in summer, is no longer an issue after the RSL purchased a John Deere ride-on with a 42-inch cutting deck to make life easier for the members

who volunteer their time to keep the grounds maintained.

“We are so appreciative of what the RSL has done for our club,” David said.

“Having a mower on hand to be able to use whenever we need to, instead of having to organise a group of members to bring out their hand mowers, is going to be amazing.”

One of the club's founding members, John Anderson, owns the land and with the club's help has built one of the most desirable powerboat racecourses in Australia.

The club was formed three years ago and is now one of the fasted growing RC clubs in Australia and the largest club in Queensland with about 60 members.

DON'T WORRY, BE BEARY

MEMBERS of the Fraser Coast Artslink Creative Crafters group lovingly made and delivered 650 read bears and 550 welcome worms to participating schools this year as part of the Neighbourhood Centre’s Read Bear program.

The bears are knitted and stuffed, stitched and labelled. They are bright and appealing to the children who read to their bears, with the heart-warming initiative aiming to foster a love for reading among children aged six to seven, promoting literacy, language skills, and overall well-being.

Encouraged to read to their furry buddies every weeknight, children find motivation, comfort, and joy in their new literary companions.

The Worry (or welcome) Worms help in reducing anxiety associated

with starting prep or transitioning into Year 1.

For some schools, the bear and Worry Worm are paired with a book from the Fraser Coast Library. Each bear takes metres of wool to make, and a 1kg bag of stuffing only just fills 12 bears.

Add to that a personalised name tag, buttons and a goal of delivering 1000 bears to local schools in 2024-2025, and you have quite an expense for the notfor-profit organisation.

The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program has been a sponsor of the crafters for the past two years with $2500 in 2023 and $3000 in 2024 to help keep cover the costs of materials with demand from schools only increasing each year.

They hosted the Queensland Titles and the Southeast Queensland Titles in 2023 and were chosen to host the Queensland Championships in October this year and the Australian Championships in 2025.

“It's really something to see,” John said.

The dam is 30-foot deep and is the perfect shape for the 100 metre-long and 60-metre-wide course that often sees six boats racing, side by side, with members piloting from the purpose-built viewing platform.

Some boats can do speeds of up to 160km, completing the course in under one minute.

EMPOWERING TEENS THROUGH

HARD YAKKA

DESPITE the Oz Adventure Hard Yakka Program’s level of success since starting in 2008, there is currently no government funding provided.

“So, if you have an interest in radiocontrolled boats and are looking for an affordable new sport or hobby, come out and have a look and meet the club members and even try our club boat around the course.”

To organise a visit, contact John through the Wide Bay Remote Control Boat Club Facebook page.

That's why it is important for Bob Davis and his dedicated team to have community support from organisations like Battlers QLD Tri Service Military Motorcycle Club and the Hervey Bay RSL who together presented a cheque for $1500 at the Graduation/March Out Parade recently.

During the presentation participants celebrated completing the 12-day Military Youth Diversion Training Program which is not just a military boot camp for troubled teens, but a positive youth development training program following a military style strategy. The specialised boot camp programs provide a structured environment for growth, accountability, and self-discovery.

It's certainly a program the Battlers QLD Tri Service Military Motorcycle Club are proud to support with their club members made up of current serving Navy, Army and Airforce, and ex-service men and women.

The club was formed in 2013 with the aim of

supporting Defence Force Personnel serving or ex-serving and charitable organisations. They foster camaraderie between members of the club, Defence Force personnel and other motorcycle clubs.

They also promote motorcycling activities for the club members and guests while maintaining a family orientated philosophy, all while raising money for a worthy cause like Hard Yakka.

The club runs an organised ride each month for lunch and/or meeting which sometimes is arranged into an overnight stay. When the weather permits and at members request, a fortnightly ride is often run.

Ex-service and current serving members who like to ride or help raise funds for Hard Yakka are more than welcome to phone Secretary Danny Mason on 0427 880 008 to find out more.

To donate or find out more about the Hard Yakka program, visit ozadventures.com.au.

HUMPBACKS FLYING HIGH IN MALAYSIA

THE Hervey Bay RSL courtesy bus transported some very excited members of the Humpbacks All Abilities Futsal Club to businesses in Hervey Bay and Maryborough to say a big thank you to their loyal sponsors recently

Their last stop was at the RSL where the team passed on their thanks to the donations committee for supporting them with a $5000 grant to help pay for costs associated with representing Australia in Malaysia, playing the sport they love.

Fundraising officer Jen Gusscott said the club started in 2021 with a simple aim of providing fun, fitness and friendship.

Now, the Humpbacks have their own league with four teams and many of the players now competing at a regional, national and now, an international level.

“The amount of confidence, community and overall mental well-being this club has provided these individuals is amazing to witness,” Jen said.

“An opportunity like this is a once in a lifetime chance that they will carry proudly for so many years to come.”

As a team, the Humpbacks have been furiously fundraising

to help pay the $4300 per person tour package cost but it just wasn't enough to get them over the line.

Jen said the sponsorship from the Hervey Bay RSL and other local businesses provided the necessary financial support to get the team to Malaysia.

Go Humpbacks!

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE

CRIME Stoppers is a not-for-profit organization assisting Queensland Police Service in the prevention of crime and apprehension of offenders through Crime Stoppers information.

In Hervey Bay, there's a dedicated group of volunteers who address crime in our region through community awareness and encouraging community members to anonymously report non-urgent crime and suspicious activity.

The Hervey Bay RSL is proud to play a small part in supporting the volunteers through our community grants program with a new Lenovo laptop so the secretary, treasurer and chairperson can accurately maintain office records and bookkeeping.

Chairman Col Deller said the laptop was put to good use on Crime Stoppers Day alongside Queensland

Police Service in Stockland Shopping Centre recently.

“I wish to say a huge thank you to the Hervey Bay RSL for the community grant that we received to purchase a laptop.

“This is in order for our secretary to carry out her work, and also, we are now running videos about Crime Stoppers through the laptop, bringing awareness to the general public on preventing crime when we have public displays.”

Report any suspicious activity via the Crime Stoppers website at crimestoppersqld.com.au or phone 1800 333 000.

Any person who would like to join Crime Stoppers in Hervey Bay can contact Col on email at herveybay@csql.com.au

WALK TO REMEMBER

THE Red Nose Walk to Remember is an annual tradition that brings together families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss to remember, honour and celebrate their babies.

The Hervey Bay RSL was proud to sponsor this walk in Hervey Bay recently which was organised by local residents Simon and Shelley Chambers.

The couple know from personal experience the unimaginable pain that parents go through when they lose a child.

“Shelley and I lost our baby girl six years ago now,” Simon said.

“We volunteered to do the walk to remember in the hope that we can help bereaved parents somehow.

“If we help just one person, that will be more than enough for us.”

The event included a wreath laying ceremony at the beach, followed by a ceremony and morning tea at the Botanic Gardens Community Centre.

GOOD TIMES ROLL AT CARNIVAL

LADY bowlers from around Queensland converged on the Urangan Bowls Club for their very popular ‘Whale of a Carnival’ in October

The carnival attracted 128 ladies, with many visitors choosing to make their visit to Hervey Bay a holiday.

President Lynda Kattenberg said the event consisted of four teams competing in five rounds of 15 ends over two days.

“These ladies came from our local clubs and surrounding areas including visitors from other parts of the state,”

Lynda said.

“The Whale Carnival has been a long

running carnival, and a favourite event for lady bowlers near and far.”

Lynda said some great bowls were played and the 32 teams that competed finished off the two-day event with luncheon and presentations to winning eight teams.

The second and third place prizes was proudly sponsored by the Hervey Bay RSL.

The prize winners were chuffed to find a whale pin attached to each of the prize envelopes.

“This fantastic carnival was made possible by the generous support of the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants and other local businesses.

“Congratulations to the winners and participants who have made this annual event so successful.”

JUNIOR SPORTING SUCCESS

Lorraine Puilingi

Congratulations to Hervey Bay's Lorraine Puilingi who was selected for the girls QLD State Team for the AFL U-12 National Championship in Geelong, Victoria, recently.

Lorraine had a fantastic tournament at Nationals where she enjoyed playing alongside her teammates on the Queensland representative team.

Lorraine said it opened her eyes to the higher level of intensity and skills required to compete at the national level.

The Queensland team did the state proud after winning five games and only one loss against a Victorian team. As a result, the Queensland girls came away with a silver medal.

Lorraine said a $500 Individual Sporting Grant from the Hervey Bay RSL assisted the family immensely by putting it towards paying for the travel and accommodation expenses while attending the weeklong tournament.

Sophie Roder

One choir director, one pianist, two parent helpers and 14 students, including Hervey Bay's Sophie Roder, boarded a plane to New Zealand earlier this year for the 2024 World Choir Games.

The young singer was selected to attend the event after a successful audition with the St Mary's College Choir and was proudly supported with a $1000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant to help pay for travel costs.

“Thank you so much for the Hervey Bay RSL for their generosity,” Sophie said.

“Without the money provided by the RSL I would not have been able to go to New Zealand.

“It was an incredible and inspiring experience which I will treasure forever.”

The choir warmed up with a Friendship Concert at the Mairangi Arts Centre in Auckland on Day 2 followed by the big concert on day 3 at the Q Theatre.

The competition pieces included Blinding Lights, Love Runs Out, Runaway and In My Blood with Sophie and her fellow choir achieving a bronze Level 10 in the open pop ensembles.

“We were very proud of this achievement because some of the singers did not have much formal training in a choir or as soloist,” Sophie said.

“We also have never sung together as a choir prior to starting our journey to the choir games.

“Going to the World Choir Games was a huge undertaking but we performed well and hopefully can continue as a group.”

Congratulations Sophie!

Alex and Max Rott

Twin brothers Alex and Max Rott have made their debut in the international sailing scene after being selected to compete at the Nacra 15 World Championships in Spain last month.

The 16-year-old Hervey Bay boys have been sailing for 10 years in a variety of monohulls before moving into the Nacra 15, where they placed third at the Nacra Nationals in January after only six months in this highperformance youth catamaran.

They trained hard, and with another nine months of experience under their belts, they were selected to make the long journey to Spain to compete in the championships.

Alex and Max were the only Australians to compete at these championships.

In addition, the twins have completed their Australian Sailing Instructor certifications and upon their return from the World Championships, the Hervey Bay Sailing Club will open their doors to a new Junior Sailing programme to help other youngsters get into the sport.

The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program provided $3,000 to support Alex and Max with travel costs to these prestigious championships.

PROGRAM 2025

There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room.

What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the local community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that has a dedicated Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $5 million in donations, in-kind support and sponsorships over the past 10 years. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.

WAR WIDOWS’ GUILD OF HERVEY BAY

Meet at RSL on 1st Monday of the month at 10am.

heroes REMEMBERING OUR

HUNDREDS of residents fell silent at the Freedom Park Cenotaph in Pialba on November 11, at 11am, to remember the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts.

This year marks 106 years since the ending of World War 1.

After World War 2, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom's proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World War 1 and 2.

Today, this loss is commemorated on this poignant day.

Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman led the 30-minute service with a special address, followed by laying of wreaths by local dignitaries and school leaders. Lest We Forget

Welcome to this edition of RSL Life!

The year has passed by so quickly with only six weeks left until Christmas!

Remembrance Day was our last commemoration for 2024, and I would like to thank all the veterans, residents and visitors who attended the service at Freedom Park on November 11. Even though it wasn't a public holiday, the turnout was exceptional and very pleasing to veterans that non-veterans are remembering and showing their respect to those who have paid the supreme sacrifice, as well as those who returned from war

The Sub-Branch members' luncheon was held in Hervey House at the RSL Club and was well attended. A special mention and thank you to Senior RSL Floor Manager Sharon, Functions Manager Ali, and their staff for the wonderful

service of food and beverages.

The Sub-Branch will be closed for the Christmas period from noon on December 20 and will reopen on Monday January 6, 2025. If any Veteran needs assistance, please contact reception at the RSL for emergency contact numbers.

If there are any new arrivals in Hervey Bay who are Ex-Service, please call in to the Sub-Branch to introduce yourself and have a chat.

The Sub-Branch always welcomes new members. On behalf of the Sub-Branch committee, I'd like to wish you all a safe and merry Christmas and good health for 2025.
