Welcome to this edition of RSL Life! YOUR CLUB REPORT

Our Mini Golf development on the corner of Truro and Bideford Streets in Torquay is now complete and has commenced trading. The response from the community has been overwhelming.

Mini Golf Hervey Bay consists of an 18-hole mini golf course with fully landscaped surrounds and large colourful umbrellas strategically located around the course.

In addition, a water feature of a whale with live fish swimming around the pools is a great addition to the course.

A licensed café has been constructed where a range of beverage products and coffee are available including a menu where light meals such as burgers, hot chips and pizza are available for purchase.

A range of seating is available under large shade sails around the café building.

Mini Golf Hervey Bay will be open seven days a week please check the website www.minigolfherveybay.com for opening times and playing details.

The Clubhouse Hervey Bay situated at the Hervey Bay Golf Club is progressing in the refurbishment of the club following some setbacks.

It was exciting to see the new roofing has been completed for the function room extension. The small gaming room extension is also near completion with additional gaming machines installed, bringing the total to 70 machines. In addition, the upgrade to the front entrance is progressing well.

The builders, Rohrig Constructions, have advised that all works should be completed in November 2023. We are looking forward to hosting many functions in the new area, with the beautiful views of the golf course. Finally, I would like to thank all members who have renewed their membership at our RSL Club for the 2023-24 year and beyond.

Our membership promotion of a CX30 Mazda motor vehicle saw lucky member Ronaldo drive away with this fantastic membership prize. It is full steam ahead with the planned renovation works here at our RSL Club. The building plans have been sent to the Consultants to finalise the drawings which enable our club to put the works to tender.

I apologise it has taken a while to get to this stage but given the complexities of our existing building and the issues in the building industry, including consultants, it has been timeconsuming.

The works are for a major deck extension, upgrade to the kitchen facilities, additional toilets and bar upgrade in the Sandy Bay Restaurant. We have upgraded our courtesy bus fleet with a second hand 22-seater Toyota Coaster bus purchased to assist on busy nights and days to get patrons to the club and home. Not to be used every day but when needed it will be utilized.

Best wishes and enjoy your club. See you at the Club!

OUT & ABOUT

AT YOUR CLUB

IT’S been a bustling couple of months at the Hervey Bay RSL with so many special events to celebrate including Mother’s Day, our very popular car giveaway and lots of live shows and entertainment.

If you can believe it, we’re now looking ahead to Melbourne Cup , Christmas and New Year’s Eve!

6 6
The Name of the Game was to bring some ABBA magic to Hervey Bay RSL during their 20th Anniversary tour, and the tribute band did just that and more at the sold-out show! Guests couldn't get enough of the heartfelt renditions Anthony Mara thrilled our patrons with a musical journey highlighting the extensive career of living legend Billy Joel the “Piano Man” The full live band and state-of-the art lighting made for a powerful tribute that left our guests mesmerised.

There was some twisting and shouting and a whole lot of praise for Bill Croft and the band during the recent Beatles Magic Tribute Show It's a tough gig to replicate the most influential band of all time but these guys did it magnificently!

Guests jingled all the way to Hervey House for the Morning Melodies Christmas in July lunch and show where the festive atmosphere had everyone in the spirit of Christmas

Christmas then came early for the lucky winners of over $10,000 in cash and prizes, with ham raffles, hampers and of course our massive toy raffle at the end of the month making it a very Merry Christmas in July

There were many hopeful patrons at the RSL Club on July 7 with their fingers crossed to drive away in the awesome Mazda CX30, but there could only be one winner

Congratulations to our lucky member Ronaldo who had a grin ear to ear after being handed the keys to this fabulous prize. Well done also to our two cash draw winners who each walked away with $500.

RALLYING AROUND RSL STAFF

The Hervey Bay RSL has been a long-time major sponsor of Rally for a Cause in various ways to help the local charity support Fraser Coast residents in their greatest time of need.

One of those ways is donating proceeds from Wednesday's charity bingo and RSL staff member Trey Milligan has played an integral part in running the popular event.

So, when a stomachache turned into a life-long battle for the much-loved and respected RSL staff member, it was incredible to see the bingo team and RFAC step in to help.

Trey's partner Kodie, also an RSL staff member, got a call one day last November to say he was heading home from work sick.

By the time she got home Trey was on the coach and couldn't feel his arms or legs and was in and out of consciousness.

The 24-year-old spent the next seven weeks in hospital where doctors found

How we support the cause…

The Hervey Bay RSL is an Operational Sponsor of Rally for a Cause and is again a Gold Sponsor of the Dunga Derby in 2023.

The Dunga Derby is the charities biggest annual fundraiser. However, this year's sponsorship of RFAC has gone to a new level with $30,000 being donated to Angel Families who provide support to those who have experienced the excruciating loss of a child under 21 years of age.

RSL also assists with proceeds from Wednesday's bingo, entry of Dunga Cars #40 and #888 in the Dunga Derby, and have sponsored teams Breast Intentions, Croc McQueen, Veterans of Australia, Cooper's journey “Avengers”, Bronxnation and Louie Da Fly Boys in this year's dunga.

Congratulations to all the Dunga Derby teams for raising an incredible $556,278 for RFAC this year!!!

that ulcers in the stomach had caused a bleed and his body was only carrying 70% of its blood. Different methods were used to try and shrink the ulcers over those weeks but there is sadly no longterm resolve.

The only two options Trey has is to live with the constant pain, watch what he eats and drinks and get regular iron infusions because he can only have one serving of red meat per week.

Or make the heartbreaking decision to get the bowel removed and live with a colostomy bag.

“I got a call from the surgeons a few weeks ago to say if it's causing too much pain, I will have to have the surgery,” Trey said.

“It's hard to keep a smile on your face when you are always in constant pain.”

Trey and Kodie both have casual positions at the club so taking unpaid leave during hospital stays left the two in financial stress as the bills started piling up Stress is a major trigger of the bleeds so the anxiety and distress of not being able to meet the cost of living took its toll and put Trey back into hospital several times.

In the middle of this, his stepdad suffered a heart attack and was also admitted to a nearby Brisbane hospital where his exhausted mum travelled between the two.

That's when Paul and Blanch from Wednesday's bingo nominated Trey as a Rally for a Cause recipient and RSL bingo staff organized a collection where the majority of bingo patrons contributed. The collection raised a substantial amount for the bingo favourite.

Trey and Kodie said they were absolutely blown away by both donations and will be forever

grateful for financial assistance when they needed it most.

“When I got the call from rally it just took such a load off my mind,” Trey said.

“We were so behind in the bills and getting back to work in pain was really hard.

“I didn't have to worry about how we were going to buy food and put fuel in the car to get to my appointments in Brisbane.

“Everyone has just been so helpful.”

Trey would also like to give a special shoutout to the RSL for holding his position and being so understanding when he's just not feeling great.

“A huge thank you to everyone. I just can't say it enough.

“RSL kept my position open for me where a lot of places wouldn't do that. My first week back the managers wouldn't let me out of their sight.

“Every day is a mixed bag but I'm just taking one day at a time.”

COMMUNITY

CARE FOR KIDS

This is sadly the reality for a small number of students who attend Urangan Point State School.

That is why the Hervey Bay RSL Grants Committee didn't hesitate to become a major sponsor of the school's chaplaincy program which has provided “chappy”

Carmen Pampeyan with an extra day per week for the next 12 months, thanks to a $20,000 grant.

This means that Carmen will be on hand for three days rather than two to provide care for the 1/3 of the students who so desperately need her support.

Carmen ensures that there is toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, give shoes, socks and clothing for the kid's feet, much of which is donated by generous communitymembersincludingWoolworths andBrumby'sBakeryinUrangan

“There's always emergency sandwiches in the freezer for lunch because some of the kids don't come to school with any food at all,” Carmen said.

“We have 75 kids that have toast two mornings a week and when it's cold that number increases.”

Principal Matt Winter said the extra financial support is vital not only for the

IT IS unimaginable to think that children in this day and age are sent to school without shoes and socks, breakfast, a jumper during winter or have head lice so bad that their head is bleeding

children's wellbeing but also for their mental health.

“The assistance that chappy gives these kids is wide and varied,” he said.

“Some kids have very difficult home lives. We have many families going through divorce, domestic violence and homelessness.

“We've had one little fellow that is coping with three deaths in the family in a short time and those sorts of things have a big impact on them with anxiety.”

Matt said education is not the only aspect of schooling for teaching staff today with so much more going on behind the scenes which is why the chaplaincy program is so vital.

“The public don't see that there's this tremendous community need, feeding the kids, cleaning their hair, dressing them

“With my principal lens on, the ultimate role of school is education but that can't happen if you have head lice so bad that your head is bleeding or your feet are so cold because you don't have socks on.

SHELTER FOR MOTOCROSS

HERVEY Bay Motocross members are all revved up from a $4400 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant approval that has seen the club issued with four new bright yellow club marquees.

“We are just so grateful for what the RSL has done because the funding means that chappy has an extra day to have more time with these kids, plus take the pressure off her.”

Prior to the extra funding, chappy's extraordinarily big workload meant that on paper she only had three minutes to spend with each child.

She now has the time to assess each child's need and offer specialised programs, calming picnics, games, crafts and much more.

“It (funding) means that I can do extra programs and see extra kids and that is the whole point,” Carmen said.

“Two days a week was just not enough It was very overwhelming because there are some very heavy issues so having that extra day is definitely making a difference

“Time is one of the most precious gifts I can give and the RSL grant has given me that” Carmen recalls one special moment in her role when students were lining up for the bus to attend football for Gala Day. The children had their footy boots tied to their bags ready for the game, except for one young lad who chappy knew couldn't afford a pair of his own.

Having four children of her own and a good sense kids shoe sizes, she ran back to her office, grabbed a pair of brand-new donated Nike boots from the donation box which she tied to the young boy's bag because he “forgot his boots”

“For that student to feel like the rest of his other friends is a huge deal.”

The generosity of the public donating these kinds of items is imperative to Carmen being able to provide the best possible outcome for the most vulnerable students.

Community groups like MACE Wide Bay (Motorcyclists Advocating Child Empowerment) have donated to the chaplaincy program and the Urangan CWA ladies are the queens of donating socks Carmen said every little bit goes a long way and any assistance with school uniforms, socks, shoes and items like hair products, brushes and creams for the girls new SHINE program would be greatly appreciated.

HERVEY Bay Motocross members are all revved up from a $4400 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant approval that has seen the club issued with four new bright yellow club marquees.

The club was sadly broken into in March this year and marquees that were used to shade volunteers, riders and paramedics wereamongtheitemsstolen.

President Tim Roker said the club aims to provide a safe and controlled environment at Dundowran Park for its 250 members to enjoy and participate in the sport of motocross.

That includes being sun safe and dry during events.

“It can be a long day, standing out in sun for some of our volunteers so the marquees have made a world of difference in keeping them cool in the shade,” Tim said.

“The shade covers are also used by our ambulance bearers who need to be positioned in the middle of the track on race days for easy and quick access to accident victims.

“They also cover gate admittance volunteers and provide shade during trophy presentations.”

Tim said the club prides itself on having the reputation as being one of best motocross facilities in Australia and providing shade plays a part in upholding that notoriety.

“We have about 250 members ranging in age from four years to 60 years, both male and female.

“We host about eight race days each year as well as hosting major motocross events where up to 400 riders and their support teams come to Hervey Bay.”

“His smile was just so big,” Carmen said. “He could go to the gala day and be like the rest of the kids. It's sometimes not just the needs, it's the wants as well.

“A pair of socks might not mean much to the average person but to a child with cold feet, it makes such a difference. “There are so many different ways to assist but the easiest thing is a small donation of shopping gift card, especially coming into Christmas so we can do Happy Hampers for families.

“We are all about kindness and we want to be a school that cares about each other”

FUNDRAISING MORNING TEA

A fundraising morning tea supported by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program to raise awareness for Myositis was a smashing hit with guests raising over $3700 on the day

The month of May was Worldwide Myositis Awareness month, so organiser and local Myositis Association Australia member Robert Anderson held the morning tea to raise awareness and funds to help find a treatment for the rare condition. Myositis is an inflammation of the muscles that can cause them to become weak, tired and painful. It can affect anyone of any age, including children.

Congratulations to Robert and his team for a job well done.

COMFORT

FOOD

A new partnership between the Hervey Bay RSL and Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre will provide ongoing support for Comfort Kitchen

The sponsorship of $1000 per month for the next 12 months through the club's community grants program will ensure that the much-loved Comfort Kitchen, which is run entirely on donations and volunteer time, continues to serve nutritious meals and good company for those doing it tough.

This ongoing support will provide close to 100 meals per week to members of our community.

RSL committee member Robert Garland visited Comfort Kitchen last

month to announce the sponsorship and to thank the volunteers who work tirelessly each week to prepare and serve a three-course meal.

HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson presented Robert with a Neighbourhood Share Plate as a token of HBNC's gratitude for the donation and expressed her heartfelt thanks for the generous donation.

“Comfort Kitchen could not happen without the support of the community, and a contribution as significant as this will make an incredible difference to

this vital program,” Tanya said.

“The funds will help cover the costs of purchasing food each week, which is increasingly challenging as cost-ofliving pressures rise.

“We know many people in our community rely on Comfort Kitchen to receive a hot, nutritious meal each week, and to gather with friends, so I

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

GUESTS staying at Rotary Hospital

House now have a cool and shaded verandah to relax on thanks to a $4,700 grant from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.

The Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City were successful in gaining the grant to install four Zipscreen exterior blinds at the back of the home, which is located near the cafeteria on the grounds of the Hervey Bay Hospital.

The fitting of the blinds was part of a refurbishment to the home with air conditioners installed in all six rooms plus the common room, new flooring and a new front door and surrounds were also recently installed by the Rotary club.

The Hervey Bay community and over 100 local businesses opened their hearts and their wallets for the home to be built in 2010 so that families of ill patients had access to low-cost emergency accommodation on the grounds of the Hervey Bay Hospital.

The Rotary Hospital House committee fundraised relentlessly to build the facility and the rooms at Rotary Hospital House were fitted out and furnished by

The Lions Club of Hervey Bay, The Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City, The Zonta Club of Hervey Bay, The Rotary Club of Maryborough, The partners of the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay, Hervey Bay RSL and the Community Area by The Fraser Coast Lions Club.

Rotary member Ross Boles said the back of the home was in desperate need of blinds to provide shade and reduce the heat intensity in the building.

“The grant has improved the comfort of Rotary Hospital House residents, reduced air conditioner running costs for the Hervey Bay Hospital and completed the refurbishment of the facility.

“We think Rotary House is a great facility with its usage extending much further than the Fraser Coast; in fact, most of the people using it come from areas outside the Wide Bay.

“The refurbishment was only able to be completed with the help of a

RSL Community Grant. Thank you.”

A Queensland Health spokesperson said each unit has its own ensuite and guests have 24-hour access to the communal kitchen and lounge area which provides a homely and supportive atmosphere for those a long way from home. This means that families of patients have a place to go for a shower, a sleep, prepare a meal or to have a break and still be close to the hospital.

“A big thank you to our friends at the Hervey Bay RSL for donating these zip blinds.

“They will make for a much more comfortable and private stay for the many families who live in Rotary House while their loved ones are being cared for at the hospital.

“If you have a loved one who is or will be a patient in Hervey Bay Hospital, and could do with onsite accommodation support, please reach out to the team caring for them who can put you in contact with the right person.”

YOUNG GOLFING SUCCESS

HERVEY BAY’S Taj Peek came home triumphant from the Wide Bay State Schools 13–19-year Queensland State Golf Championships recently.

The 14year-old played an incredible four days of competition at Palmer Resort Coolum to be named as the overall net winner of the championships.

Taj swung into action to beat 69 other competitors. What a fantastic achievement!

A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $250 helped cover some of the costs of fuel, accommodation, and uniforms.

Congratulations, Taj!

SHOOTING STARS OF BAY BASKETBALL

Support through the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program has assisted the U18 Hurricanes Rep team, U16 Team's A and B and U14s Team B, just to name a few

Coordinator Danielle Shephard said the U16 Team A had a strong group of boys competing in Division 1 locally to be placed in Division 3 at Basketball

Queensland States

She said there was some great young athletes on the team who were excited to play at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre recently for the five-day competition where they walked away with a huge semi-

final win scoring

111 points

“They played teams from all over Queensland including Northside Brisbane, Gold Coast and Mackay and the team went on to sit 6th overall in their division,” Danielle said “Our president who coached this team was proud of the growth and maturity the boys developed over the season.

“They worked really hard on teamwork and the importance of using each other.

“After some great wins, the boys were exhausted after five days of competition but are looking forward to working harder next season.”

Danielle said the U14s Team B was by far the most fun and most energetic team this year.

“Every game, training session and game had lots of laughter.

“The improvement these 11 players showed was astounding and this paid off when they beat an undefeated team in our CQ carnivals which won them the silver medal!

The playground at Harmony House is an essential part of building positive family relationships through play during these visits and unfortunately the 14-year-old shade sail that was covering the playground was beyond repair.

The centre is also used twice a week by the Department of Child Safety reunification playgroup.

Karlita reached out to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program for assistance in buying a new one, which was whole-heartedly approved by the grants committee for $3200.

“Due to the daily use of the playground is essential that there is a shade sail to protect the children and families from sunburn and other health problems from prolonged exposure to the sun.

“The shade sail will allow for the playground to be used all year round now.

“Thank you to the RSL for assistance with this; we really appreciate it, and the kids are so excited that we have a new shade sail.”

ALL BLACK ADVANTAGE

Rugby

“They continued their hard work at training before travelling 1200km to Townsville for states.”

While the results didn't reflect the improvement and fighting spirit, Danielle said there was many extraordinarily close games during the four-day Basketball Queensland State competition.

“With the majority of the team being bottom age, they are enthusiastic to work towards attending states again next year in Cairns.”

She said without the RSL grants subsidising the cost of attending these events many players simply couldn't attend.

“Hervey Basketball association, players and parents thank Hervey Bay RSL for their support and sponsorship.

“Without the kind donations, our teams would not be able to make it to Queensland State Competitions.”

The talented rugby union player flew to New Zealand to learn from some of the most highly respected coaches and former players in world rugby like Collin Cooper, Murray Mexted, Dave Ellis, Christian Cullen, Owen Franks and Aaron Mauger to name a few.

The aim of the five-day program, created by former All Black captain Murray Mexted, was to maximize the potential of rugby individuals, teams and organizations from around the world. As a 115kg, 178cm tall front rower, the focus for Kane was all about learning position specific training to allow him to pursue rugby as a potential career.

A $1500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant helped some of the costs involved with attending the New Zealand-based program.

Congratulations Kane!

WHEN you walk through the front door of Harmony House you can instantly see why the name is so apt.

IN THE FLIP ZONE

A major sponsorship of $ , y ymnastics Club to take their gymnastics programs to local state primary schools, with thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program

This is the second year the gymnastics program has been in place.

President Adam Kirwan thanked the RSL for their continuous support which will enable the coaches to deliver the very best gymnastics program for the students

“Our coaches go out to schools and assess what type of equipment they have and tandem this with our equipment to deliver a really engaging gymnastics program for a stack of young people,” Adam said.

“This encompasses kids from prep up to year six.

UMPIRE GOALS

“In our club alone, we have over 300 young people participating in gymnastics, and we are the largest in the region.”

Adam said the not-for-profit organisation is committed to helping the Fraser Coast community by keeping their fees as low as possible.

The RSL grant will help them achieve that goal.

“There is great desire for gymnastics in our community because it teaches young people fitness and strength, but it is also uniquely placed as both a team and individual sport,” Adam said.

A local sportsman supported by the Hervey Bay RSL was one of six students from across Queensland chosen to umpire at the 2023 Queensland Representative School Sport championships

RSL community grants recipient Hunter Harvey, 15, headed to Ballarat to umpire games made up of some of the very best 15 years boys' and girls' players from across the country in late June.

Hunter not only represented Queensland but also his local AFL Wide Bay Club and the Fraser Coast Anglican College.

Hunter started playing AFL as a junior but hung up the boots a few years ago to focus on umpiring

He started as a junior referee and worked his way through the grades including boundary in senior games to his current level in local Reserve and A-Grade and Women's games.

He has also officiated at the State Carnival for U12's and U15's.

The Community Grant of $1000 helped cover some costs of Hunter's flights, accommodation, transport and uniforms.

“We cater to gymnasts from the very young all the way to adults.

“With the extensive grants we have received over the last 30 years we have one of the best-equipped clubs in the state” He said discipline and teamwork make up a huge part of gymnastics, which helps young competitors to grow as people by learning to follow instructions, to watch, listen and think independently.

“The flexibility developed at gymnastics assists with injury prevention and is

Congratulations to Hervey Bay’s Kanisha Green who was selected in the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team to compete at the Australian Rugby Union Championship in Sydney

An individual junior sporting grant of $500 from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program helped cover some of the costs involved with attending the prestigious event

Kanisha's mum Melanie said her daughter thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing against elite level teams.

“It was a real learning experience on and off the field, meetng new people and making new friends,” Melanie said.

“She was taken out of her comfort zone on the field and made goals for herself after every game to improve on in the next game.”

beneficial for all other sports as well.

“It is our goal to teach, develop and promote gymnastics to children of all ages in a fun, and stimulating format, and in a safe and controlled environment, thereby improving sensory functions that help in developing a healthy and positive self-image.

“Through a fun and enjoyable learning experience of sequential gymnastics, all students will enjoy the rewards of physical and mental fitness.”

The mission of Lloyd McDermott programs is to use rugby as a tool to provide opportunities and education to enrich the lives of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males and females.

The selection did all that and more for Kanisha whose long-term goal is to compete at the 2032 Olympic Games.

Olympic Gold medallist, former Australian Rugby player and current rugby 7's coach for Queensland Academy of Sport, Shannon Parry, invited Kanisha to be involved in the Queensland Academy of Sport Rugby 7's emerging Rugby Union program later in the year.

“We as a family would like to express our sincere thanks for the RSL's financial support and providing Kanisha with such an amazing experience and opportunity.

“Words cannot describe our appreciation.”

COMMUNITY PROGRAM 2023

There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room.

What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the Fraser Coast community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that runs a Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $900,000 in the last financial year. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.

HONOUR FOR “THE GREAT WAR”

REMEMBRANCE Day marks the moment hostilities ceased after four years on the Western Front of the First World W At 5am on 11 November 1918 in a railway carriage in France, representatives of France, Britain and Germany all signed a document that would put an end to the conflict.

“It was the old-style warfare; bl the hell out of each other and what's left get up and try and fight,” Mr Tidyman said.

Six hours later - at 11am - those signatures would bring into effect the Armistice that endedthewar.

More than 70 million people fought in World War 1, with estimates of the dead between nine and 13 million, many who havenoknowngrave.

HerveyBayRSLSub-BranchPresidentBrian Tidyman said many civilians aren't aware that the difference between ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day was the sheer brutalityofthiswaralone.

HesaidtheANZACDaytraditionwasformed atGallipoliaftertheAustralianandtheNew Zealand Army Corps formed a defensive alliancetofightinmanydifferentconflicts. Remembrance Day marks a minute silence on November 11 at 11am, solely for the soldiers in WW1 who were sent to their deathinallout-trenchwarfare.

The widespread use of machine guns and rapid-firing artillery pieces on the Western Front meant that any exposed soldier was vulnerable.

PROMISE FLICKERS

in centenary flame

BURNING in the flame of the centenary torch was a promise by a World War 1 soldier to a dying mate in the trenches of the Western Front that he would “look after the missus and the kids”.

That promise was kept and 100 years later lives on in the 44 Legacy Clubs in Australia and one in London who now look after over 40000 widows and their children and 3400 Legatees.

Of those, 250 widows and their children live in Hervey Bay.

The centenary celebrations started with the first torch flame being lit in Pozières France on April 23 before undertaking a six-month journey visiting all Legacy Club locations around Australia, including Maryborough on June 5. The torch was carried in Maryborough by 16 Torch Bearers, including Hervey Bay RSL Services & Memorial Club President Ray Eustace AFSM and Legacy Fraser Burnett Chairman Graeme Inglis. As a big supporter of Legacy both personally and through the RSL, Mr Eustace said he was incredibly proud to have been selected to walk the torch for part of the 4.3km journey from the Maryborough Cricket Club to the Maryborough Town Hall Green.

The Hervey Bay RSL sponsored the walk with a $500 donation to Legacy Fraser Burnett.

“It was a surprise to get a letter of invitation from Graeme, but it was very nice to be thought of,” Mr Eustace said.

“I am a big supporter of Legacy, so I was honoured to step up and represent Hervey Bay on this very special day.”

Mr Inglis said the Fraser Burnett Legacy Group extends from Hervey Bay to Maryborough, Biggenden, Monto, Wondai, Kingaroy and Nanango where there are currently over 430 widows and dependants being cared for.

There are many stories of widows doing it tough like *Elizabeth who lost her husband to a heart attack 18 months after returning from Vietnam.

At 38, the single mother of four had no employment and was asked to vacate the “married quarters” of the army barracks within a month.

In the wake of tragic loss, Legacy opened up a whole new life to Elizabeth with financial assistance and emergency relief That was 50 years ago.

“Legacy helps care for the dependants of those veterans who have given their lives or health in the service of their country,” Mr Inglis said.

“It is our wish that families left shall not suffer social or financial disadvantage through the loss of a loved one.

“We also provide a bit of social contact for the ladies who aren't very mobile and help with things like Gold

Card applications or assistance packages.”

The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch and Hervey Bay RSL Service & Memorial Club also sponsor education needs for the children.

“Thanks to the RSL and Sub-Branch, we have an education fund that helps with expenses through to tertiary level and there are also camps and other activities for children to attend.

“We just sent a young bloke over to Hawaii for Cheerleading championships… there was no way his mother could afford that kind of thing.”

Mr Inglis said initiatives like contacting and making home visits to widows is also big part of their efforts to keep in touch with families however dwindling volunteer numbers is making the task increasingly difficult.

The not-for-profit organisation receives no government funding and relies solely on grants, fundraising through sausage sizzles and Legacy Badge Week, community donations and volunteers to continue the service.

Mr Inglis said a common misconception is that you need to be a veteran to volunteer your service as a Legatee but that is no longer the case.

He said volunteers are desperately needed to continue delivering the century-old promise to look after widows and veterans in our region.

“We are seeking new Legatees or

The Sub-Branch REPORT

Welcome to this edition of RSL Life. Since my last report, over half a year has passed and Remembrance Day is not all that far away. The Sub-Branch has been busy during that time attending to business, Pensions and Welfare.

The Sub-Branch membership currently stands in 1746 which puts Hervey Bay Sub-Branch very high in the state.

Last month was the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War and

unfortunately there are only two Veterans from that conflict (that is known about) in Hervey Bay and are both of poor health. We wish them well.

On August 15, the Commemoration for the Victory over Japan will be held at Freedom Park Main St Pialba starting at 1100hrs. All are invited to attend.

On August 18, the 50th Anniversary of the withdrawal of Australian troops from South Vietnam will be

volunteers to assist in our activities including widow contacts and visits and help with fundraising which is very important to us.

“It is the generosity of organisations like the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch, the Hervey Bay RSL Memorial Club and the public that enable Legacy's work to continue.

“Legacy do receive some grants but no direct funding from the government.” Legacy Badge Week has been held every year since 1942 to coincide with Father's Day in honour of the fathers that never came home.

You can buy a badge from the RSL foyer and participating outlets during Legacy Badge Week from August 26 to September 2.

Legacy badges may be little but the funds they raise make a big impact in the lives of local veterans' families.

held. The service will start at 1100hrs at Freedom Park.
