We have all recovered from Christmas and the New Year celebrations and look forward to the year ahead.
One project that has been in the pipeline here at the RSL for some time now is the deck extension and renovations on Level 1. I am very pleased to announce that our committee has approved a tender from Rohrig QLD PTY LTD for the upgrade and the deck extension works.
The project will include:
Renovated toilets on level one adjacent poppies. New restaurant toilets on level one.
Extension to the Fraser bar.
New dry store, large freezer, and large cold room for the kitchen on level one.
New dishwasher and pots wash machine for the kitchen on level one.
Deck extension will see an additional seating for approximately 100 people.
The construction period will be 35 working weeks, starting with demolishing in late February/early March and finishing in November.
The Clubhouse renovations were completed before Christmas and have been well received but unfortunately these works clearly affected trade during the construction period.
However, it is pleasing to now see a positive turnaround in trading over the Christmas period and up to this time.
The new function space overlooking the golf greens has been popular with guests. We look forward to hosting many functions at our new-look club this year.
Mini Golf Hervey Bay has been trading exceptionally well over the past three months. The current humid hot weather is affecting trade during the day as you can appreciate.
Our staff are also under pressure with no air
conditioning in the café building however we are doing our best with fans to endeavor to make the premises as comfortable as possible.
We are also looking at providing additional umbrellas for shade around the golf course for our patrons and a fixed shade sail that should alleviate some heat in the café for staff.
Trading has also been good at the Burpengary Community Club over Christmas, despite the ongoing issue of power failure on the premises. We have purchased a 500kva power grade generator to address the power disruptions within the club.
Rainbow Beach Sports Recreation and Memorial Club:
Over the last 12 months your club has been assisting this Club with advice and sponsorship during some flat trading periods.
At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Rainbow Beach Sports Recreation and Memorial Club, members voted in favour of a motion to amalgamate with the Hervey Bay RSL Club. Your Club committee was in favour of this amalgamation.
This will see the Clubs assets and liabilities merge with the Hervey Bay RSL Club, and we will be the holders of the Liquor and Gaming Licenses (50 machines) moving forward. As you can appreciate, this process won't happen overnight especially when dealing with local and state government departments. We are anticipating this process should be completed within six months.
If you see me at the club, be sure to come and say hello.

WHEN a child is being removed from their home in tragic circumstances, child safety officers usually only have time to fill a garbage bag with a handful of their belongings
Thankfully, there's people like Kathryn Rodda and the team from Hope in a Suitcase – Fraser Coast who volunteer their time to do just as the name of the not-for-profit charity suggests.
To give hope to the children they support by providing a brand-new suitcase with essential items for children entering foster care or out-of-home care, so they have something to call their own.
Hope in a Suitcase is a national not-forprofit organisation with a Fraser Coast branch that covers Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Bundaberg, and works closely with local child services agencies and Churches of Christ Care.
The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program is proud to support the charity this financial year with a grant of $3,780 to cover the cost of a storage unit for 12 months.
All the donated suitcases and items that
RESTORING HOPE FOR FOSTER KIDS HOOKED ON COMP
were previously stored in Kathryn's home garage, are now more easily accessible for the volunteers.
Kathryn said suitcases for new-borns to 17-year-olds are often needed at short notice.
“I have access to the shed at all hours now so if I get a phone call from one of the agencies needing a suitcase, I can go to the shed at any time, pack a case and drop it off,” Kathryn said.
“The funds we are saving from not having to pay for the storage shed will go back to the cause and make a big difference.”
The suitcases serve a purpose beyond the practical – alongside underwear, clothes, and toiletries, there's also a blanket, and a journal, as well as books and toys.
There are cases for babies with bottles, nappies and wipes.
CAMP FUN FOR ALL
The Scripture Union’s Beach Bash 2023 was a resounding success with 60 youth between Brisbane and Gladstone joining together in Hervey Bay for a fun-filled week.
Each suitcase is age and gender-appropriate – for example, smaller kids will get picture books, and older kids will get novels. Colouring books and pencils are also included, with older boys getting a range of sports balls in a duffle bag rather than a suitcase, which can also second as a school bag.
move around so this will always go with them so they're not carrying a garbage bag or stripy bag.”
Kathryn said the community is always generous in donating items however they are currently in need of more suitcases.
Older girls will also get a duffle bag with some small items of make-up and hand creams.
Plus, every single suitcase, no matter what the age, gets a stuffed toy, a nightlight and a tag with some beautiful words attached.
“Every suitcase has a tag on it that reads 'This suitcase belongs to a worthy, loved and resilient child and will go with them wherever they go'.
“It's common knowledge that foster kids
PLANS for the 32nd annual Burrum Heads Amateur Fishing Club’s Easter Fishing Competition are ramping up with the competition only a few months away
There are drop off points at the Bendigo Bank on Main Street, Pialba or at Storage King on Islander Road, Pialba.
Drop off locations are desperately needed in Maryborough so if anyone can help, drop Kathryn an email at frasercoast@hiasc.org.au or send a private message on the charities Facebook page.
The Hervey Bay RSL provided a sponsorship of $3,000 to help host the annual five-day event for disadvantaged local youth from all different backgrounds who ordinarily wouldn't get the opportunity to attend a camp, including those in foster homes.
Organiser Daniel Cooper said camp consisted of a variety of activities and experiences, which opened the door to mentorship opportunities.
He said the biggest highlight was the carnival and beach day.
“Carnival was the ice breaker activity for the week,” Daniel said.
“Leaders in groups, created a small fête style set up, decorated their own stall, and showcased their creativity by producing an interactive mini game.
“There were classic carnival games, gel blasters, nerfs and even a human piñata.
“The beach day was an awesome day of free play, full of swimming, sandcastles, cricket, frisbees and footies.”
He said the camp was a great opportunity
to connect with the youth, supporting and equipping them the best they can for their individual lifestyles and home environments
“The kids practiced teamwork, learnt about their purpose, and strengthened old and new relationships.”
Daniel thanked those who dug deep to bring the camp to fruition.
“We thank everyone who played a part in making this camp possible, through prayer from our local church communities, ongoing support from Scripture Union and the Hervey Bay RSL who generously donated funds to cover sponsorship for the activity costs.
“Your donation opened doors for new opportunities and supported families.”
Hundreds of locals and visitors converge on beautiful Burrum Heads each year for the three-day event where there's lots of family fun, random super draw prizes and of course the chance to fish and win, in live and dead weigh-ins.
“We encourage all entrants to sustainably and weigh-in live fish, if possible,” Judy said.
“All live fish put into the tank for viewing will be released back into the river.”
The Hervey Bay RSL has been a major supporter of the event for the past few years with sponsorship of $4,000 in 2024 to cover the cost of the club's liability insurance.
Club member Judy James said the notfor-profit club encourages residents to meet like-minded people who enjoy fishing and boating with three weekly weigh-ins and a free barbecue for members.
The Easter competition is the club's
major fundraising event of the year which not only tops up the club's funds but also boosts the local economy.
“We anticipate having over 500 entrants in 2024 including both adults and children who stay in our two caravan parks, Hip Camps and holiday houses in both Burrum Heads and Hervey Bay,” Judy said.
The competition will be held in and around Lions Park on Burrum Street from March 29 to 31.
The classic will start at 7am on Good Friday and finish at the end of the weigh-in on Easter Sunday at 11am.
Sign on is from 9am to 4pm on Good Friday and 9am to 12pm on Easter Saturday. Entry is $40 for adults and $10 for kids.

GIVING LEAGUE A SPORTING CHANCE
THE Hervey Bay RSL and the Seagulls Rugby League Club have once again united to offer junior and senior players the best kick off the club could ask for in 2024
The RSL is proud to be a Platinum sponsor of the Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls for the 2024 season with a $19,000 Community Grant, 500 water bottles for the juniors, vouchers and lots of inkind support
President Joey Witteman said the RSL’s continued sponsorship and support is invaluable to the club
“The sponsorship Seagulls receives is huge; it helps us limit costing in our registration fees to our youth, especially with our ground upkeep and our field maintenance where we don't see that cost getting added
“It's also the water bottles, the free room hire we receive for all our functions, and the gift cards are fabulous because it's a little something that we can give to our volunteers even when they don't expect anything
“It's always an awesome gesture”
The mission of grass roots rugby league clubs in Queensland is to bring likeminded players together, enrich their lives and play the sport they love in a safe and encouraging environment
Joey said the RSL grant combined with a dedicated Seagulls committee and coaching community, will do just that for about 350 juniors and 80 seniors who have signed up this year
“I believe juniors playing sport helps keep them fit and healthy, and It's also a great way for them to make friends,” Joey said “From my experience as a coach, you will see some kids who struggle outside of the club but at football, are some of the greatest kids that you could want around the club
“We have had a large number of seniors moving to QRL major competitions to compete at a much higher level of Representative Football, which gives our juniors something awesome to look forward to”
International players also took part in the RSL-Sponsored PULSE Program last month with a grant of $3,000 to cover costs of uniforms and performance technology
Coordinator Steve Mason said the development program specifically targets
HUMPBACKS ON CLOUD NINE
THERE was cheers and tears of joy for the Hervey Bay Humpbacks All Abilities Queensland Country Futsal team after winning bronze at the National Club Championships in Sydney
The last match of the four-day competition saw the local team come up against a tough Queensland Maroon team but Humpbacks founder Jimmy Hamilton said the team remained strong to hold on to their position.
“We could never have imagined two years ago that we would be running four teams (in Hervey Bay) and an All-Abilities Futsal League let alone taking part in one of the biggest challenges of our lives as we played against the best of the best in Australia,” Jimmy said.
“Luke Barrett (HB Humpbacks) scored the only goal of the match and keeper Jai Lovekin saved a crucial goal in the final 30 seconds to win
the game.
“All the team and our supporters run on to the court screaming and jumping up and down with joy.
“This win puts the Hervey Bay humpbacks Queensland Country team at number 3 in all abilities ranks in Australia.”
After their exceptional performance, the team have been invited to play for Australia in Malaysia in November.
The Hervey Bay RSL was very proud to assist the team in getting to the competition with a $2,500 Community Grant to help cover the cost of flights, uniforms, and registration fees.
Go Humpbacks!
the top international players at Seagulls
Steve said the retention rate of players in Rugby League on the Fraser Coast drops off dramatically between the ages of 13 and 16
There is a hope that PULSE will create a pathway for junior players to aspire to be part of something that encourages them to continue with the sport
Especially with the Seagulls close links with Dolphins, Broncos and Storm Rugby League Clubs
“Our objective is to equip them with a skill set that will have them wanting to continue so they can showcase the skills they have and continue to enjoy success in their lives and in our great game,”
Steve said
“We are of the belief that PULSE will give participants in this age group a reason to 'stick with it' and to develop a higher level of skill through more focused

Isabelle Shorter, Chloe McKenzie, Deena Budby, Laylah Simpson (A), Shakina Godbee, Layla Campbell-Cook (C) and Mackenzie Pitchford (B) were all supported with a Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $1500 to help make the dream of playing a reality. Many of the girls also held months of raffles and fundraisers to secure their plane tickets. Laylah's mum Zowie Simpson said the English players were tough and the conditions were horrid, but the experience for her daughter was once in a lifetime.
Laylah's Australian team were set to play five games over the course of the tour but only played four due to illness on the Aussie team.
coaching and also through the use of cutting-edge technology”
The Seagulls have also teamed up with Bayside Christian College's Rugby League Development Program 'The Bayside Barracudas', open to boys and girls entering Years 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in 2025
Joey said there's so much to look forward to in 2024
“Most importantly, we just want to see people play and watch the sport that they love”
Interest players can register via My Sideline, where you select your region/league then HBRL or HBJRL either using an existing or create a new profile
However, even after having to adapt to English rules her team still won all four games.
“We can't thank the RSL enough for the opportunity you have given Laylah by supporting her to get there,” Zowie said. “It was freezing, icy conditions thick grass, synthetic fields and playing in the snow.
“It was incredible to watch however it was evident our Aussie players were beyond freezing and were challenged by all aspects of the game, but they still managed to power through all conditions and challenges” Zowie couldn’t be more proud of her daughter's grit and determination.
“Laylah scored a try which set her team up to finish the game strong and this was a super proud parent moment.”
While she wouldn't trade the experience for anything, Laylah said she is grateful to live in Australia and call the sunny Fraser Coast home.

The grant will cover the cost of publishing two double page features in the Hervey Bay Advertiser leading up to the milestone event on March 16, 2024.
Museum President John Andersen said the special features will cover stories and photographs celebrating the golden anniversary of Hervey Bay's iconic village and its journey to becoming one of the best museums in Queensland.
Plus, photos and stories on the phenomenal changes Hervey Bay has experience in the past 50 years.
On March 16, 1974, a crowd of about 1000 people gathered at the gates of the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum for its grand opening with two buildings, damper cooking and a model

At the time, Hervey Bay was in the State Electorate of Isis so having State Government Member Jim Blake conduct the opening ceremony was certainly special.

John said the crowd in attendance could have never imagined what was in store for the museum, and Hervey Bay, 50 years on.

HUGH'S HOCKEY JOURNEY
HUGH Campbell is a young Hervey Bay athlete with a dream of pulling on the green and gold for the Kookaburras one day.
The now 12-year-old is one step closer to that goal after flying to Fiji in December to play for Australia in the Wanderers Australia International Hockey Tour where he played against the Fiji national side and state teams.
With the cost of the trip for the family being over $8500, Hervey Bay RSL was happy to take some pressure off with a $1500 community grant.
Hugh started playing hockey in 2016 and has shown a huge amount of dedication to the sport, especially in 2023.
The golden anniversary will also be etched in history with a special 200-page publication set to be released on the day of celebrations on Saturday, March 16, called “50 Historic Years”.
The first 300 families through the gate will receive a complimentary copy valued at $40.
The book features snippets of history from 1974 to now with the region's hospitals, schools, roads, building and progress all recorded for generations to come.
Last year he played in U12 Wide Bay State Championships in Rockhampton, U13 Fraser Coast Representative State Championships in Cairns and locally both U12 and U15 teams.
He also earned his spending money for the Fiji trip by mowing the neighbours' lawns and collecting and recycling cans and bottles.
Hugh said having the opportunity to play 10 days of hockey for the development team was a great reward for all the hard
training and fundraising.
"Thank you RSL for supporting me on my hockey tour to Fiji and from the experience, I made some fantastic friends both in the Australian and Fiji teams along with some lifelong skills from travelling internationally for the first time,” Hugh said.
“The opportunity has inspired me to play and train at a higher level of field hockey!”
Well done, Hugh!
Join in the celebration at the museum on Saturday, March 16, from 9am with lots of free activities organised for the day. Visitors are encouraged to come dressed in period costume or as a 1960s-70s style guru.
The winner of the ‘Design a Museum Flag’ will be revealed on the day. The winner will receive $200 and have the opportunity to raise the new flag.

SAVE THE DATE FOR BIG MORNING TEA
1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 and Cancer Council Queensland want to significantly reduce that number through research and education. However, they can only do that with efforts of volunteers like our local Fraser Coast Fundraising Group who give up their time to host a fabulous and fun morning tea at the Hervey Bay RSL each year.
The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program has assisted the group by donating $3000 to cover the cost of food and a waiver of the room hire fee for Hervey House, leaving the funds they raise to go back to CCQ.
“Funding from the Grants Program will allow all monies raised, after expenses, to be donated towards supporting those who have been diagnosed, and their families through very tough times, many from the Hervey Bay and Wide Bay Community,” said organiser Robyn Hicks.
“The funds (raised) will also go towards research, preventative education and awareness programs so that others in the future do not have to travel this journey.”
Mark your calendar on July 9, 2024, for this highly anticipated event. Tickets are $25 and will be available from RSL reception in early June.

SAFETY FIRST FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS
YOU just never know wh y g g q p ent on hand especially in a club with predominately older members.
Members of the well-known Wide Bay Rodders Car Club can now host their many annual events with confidence, knowing their volunteer medic has access to a brand-new defibrillator thanks to a donation from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.
Wide Bay Rodders President Allen White said the portable unit will always be on hand if needed.
“You just don't know when something might happen and we love to think that if it does, we will be able to save someone's life.
TAKING AIM AT BIG YEAR
CONGRATULATIONS to Nevaeh Trease who has been selected to represent Hervey Bay in the Under 11s Netball this year
Neveah has been training hard to represent her hometown at numerous tournaments this year.
An RSL Community Grant of $250 helped the family cover the costs of uniforms and playing fees.
Well done, Neveah!
“Hopefully we never have to use it but it's here if we do. We are very grateful for the donation.”
One of the club's big events on the calendar this year is the annual May in the Wide Bay event which in 2023 saw about 550 magnificent classic cars and about 30 motor bikes turning out for the three-day weekend in early May.
This year it's set for May 3 to 6, 2024.
The entrants home base is at Ingenia Caravan Park where they have four days of fun with a Meet and Greet barbecue and live entertainment on Friday, breakfast on
Saturday, Sunday and Monday, plus egg and spoon races and other activities on Saturday afternoon, and a threecourse catered meal on Sunday with live entertainment.
It is one of the most highly anticipated events on motoring enthusiasts' calendar and not just in Hervey Bay, but around Australia.
Allen said one of the highlights of the event is seeing the public turn out in droves to embrace the car community with thousands of people elbow to elbow, lining the Esplanade from Urangan to Pialba for the cruise on the Saturday afternoon A further 4000 people turned out to the
HAVING A BALL IN WEST HAM
JAXON Brenia was exposed to a life that ‘could be’ as part of a once-in-a-lifetime West Ham UK Development Tour late last year
The young soccer star realised that his dream of training under some of the most influential European soccer teams in the world was about to come true when he opened a confirmation letter from the RSL highlighting that he was approved for a $1500 Community Grant to attend The grant approval helped the family get over the line to pay for the costly 10-day trip Jaxon and his family boarded the plane to London with the George Cowie Football Academy alongside other players who had been selected from all over Australia.
Mum Maureen said it was straight to business on arrival with the kids whisked off to see West Ham play at their home ground.
Jaxon took part in multiple coaching clinics over the course of the tour including West Ham Foundation and
Show and Shine on the Sunday where all the cars lined the grounds at the Fraser Coast Sports Precinct where it will be held again this year.
What most don't realise is that the entry fee at the gate of the show and shine goes back to local charities who last year received a share of a massive $30,000 raised by the not-for-profit club.

Manchester City grass.”
“The most important element of the tour was after they did their coaching with the specific team, they were treated to seeing the team perform at a home game,” Maureen said.
“Jaxon loved touring the Stadiums of West Ham, the Manchester City Etihad Stadium, Manchester United Old Trafford Stadium, and the Fulham Stadium.
“He especially loved the change rooms and seeing were players like Erling Haaland and Jarrod Bowen got prepared prior to the game and enjoyed sitting in Pep Guardiola's game day seat. “Jaxon's highlight was watching Pep coach during the game and touching the very expensive
Maureen said Jaxon now understands that hard work and dedication has created some of the most amazing players in the world. “Jaxon though exhausted by the end of the 10-day training program walked away with some newly honed in skills, amazing memories, made some lovely friends and more of a drive to become someone he is proud of.
“He really felt like a true soccer player and now has dreams of becoming Australia's best player.”
COMMUNITY PROGRAM 2024
There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room.
What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the Fraser Coast community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that runs a Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $900,000 in the last financial year. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.
Application forms are available online at herveybayrsl.com.au or by phoning Kerrie Alexander on 41977466.

Since the last report, we have been extremely busy with our core business of looking after Veterans and their families who require help. At the time of this report our membership status stands in 1756.
The Pension and Wellbeing section are very busy dealing with Veterans in need of assistance and I would like to thank the team for a job well done
On February 23, 2024, the Sub-Branch will be conducting a Service at Freedom Park for War Animals who have assisted the Military over many years and continue to do so today
Anzac Day is also fast approaching. We encourage the community to come together on this very poignant day to honour every soldier's sacrifice and service.
The thousands of Australians who enlisted to fight in the First World War did so because they believed that their liberties were under threat. They fought for freedom and democracy
We are hoping to see a large turnout for this service.
Veterans and current serving members are invited to return to the RSL for a private Gunfire breakfast.
To attend, you must book your ticket and collect your wrist band from the Sub-Branch office.
If your ex-service and new to Hervey Bay, be sure to call into the sub-branch on Level 2 of the RSL for a chat. We always welcome new members.
If anyone needs assistance or knows of someone who does need help, please contact the Pension and Wellbeing section on 0741 849496.
Until next time take care and be happy
