AFTER four days of dust flying adventure the two Hervey Bay RSL Dunga Derby teams returned weary, but happy.

Andrew Coppens said the RSL's support of the charity had been invaluable.

“This has been both financial and non-financial,” Mr Coppens said.

In car 40 was the Sassy Sista's made up of Kellie Robinson, Sandy Reece and Cindy Donald, who were first time entrants in the event.

Even after 1300km of driving from October 15 to 18, lots of dust and a swag for a bed, the girls' said they would do it all again in a heartbeat.

The Dunga Derby is the biggest annual fundraiser for local charity Rally for a Cause – a charity the RSL has been a long-time supporter of.

“It was everything we thought it would be, and more.”

The club donates about $10,000 in sponsorship each year.

“Their (RSL) support extends to rooms for functions, Dunga Derby meetings, scrutineering, supporting team fundraising activities, donations to Dunga Derby teams and of course the carpark for the start of the annual Dunga Derby event.

“The financial contribution the Hervey Bay RSL provides, assists to meet administrative expenses associated with running the Dunga Derby event.

“This means, the Rally for a Cause committee is committed to ensuring that 100% of the funds raised, goes back into the Fraser Coast community through recipients.”

This year, a record $260,000 was raised and there was also a record 55 cars at the starting line.

Since its inception in 2015, all the teams involved have raised over $1 million, helped close to 100 families and raised thousands of dollars for people doing it tough in communities they visit during the rally.

CARMEL SERVING WITH A SMILE IF you have dined in Poppies Café at the Hervey Bay RSL it's highly likely you have had the good fortune of being served by one of the best hospitality stars in the business.

Carmel Pendergast is a well-known and respected staff member at the club after proudly wearing her badge for the last 16 years.

The Café Supervisor has been in hospitality all her working life, with another 10 years of service at the Maroochydore RSL and many years in a café at Kawana Waters, owned by tennis legend Pat Rafter's father.

What most don't know is that Pat and Carmel remain goods friends to this day.

“Management is very good here … whether you are a supervisor or just starting out I feel as though we are all treated the same.

“I know them by name and the only way to know that is by swiping the card at the till and you see their names that way.

“When I'm training someone I always say, call the customers by their name because that's your way of saying it's personal, you are prepared to look after them and they are a person not a number.”

Also known for her ability to handle just about any heated situation, Carmel says she’s not happy unless her customers are smiling.

But there was no other option, with an 8000-strong crowd expected to attend the iconic event on the Seafront Oval.

Julie said it just wasn't possible for the small team of Christian Churches volunteers to stage and monitor a community event of this scale with the current Covid-19 guidelines.

“With a totally volunteer workforce these Covid-safe requirements would have significantly increased the required volunteer input at a time when people need to focus on their own personal well-being,” Julie said.

Festive celebrations on the Fraser Coast will instead take a unique twist with the Fraser Coast Regional Council and Fraser Coast Tourism and Events teaming up to host a Covid-safe free livestreamed community concert on Saturday, December 19, in place of the

Gifts donated to the RSL giving tree will be collected by the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers Association, which will link with the Salvation Army, Uniting Church, local schools, aged care chaplains, prison chaplains (gifts for children of prisoners), local relief agencies, and churches to distribute to Fraser Coast residents most in need – a project Julie said was in the true spirit of the season.

“There's still a message of hope and joy and there's a lot of people, of all ages, that still have that awe and wonder about Christmas … that's something that hasn't changed.”

“If we didn't have the support of businesses like the RSL, those families in need would most likely miss out at a time when they need it most,” Julie said.

Management at the Hervey Bay RSL whole heartedly agree, with the club setting up a Christmas tree in the name of charity this year.

“People who make donations to the RSL giving tree, can be assured that their gifts will be distributed to needy people in our local area.

Julie encourages the gift of giving under the RSL tree for all ages including children, teenagers, men, women and the elderly.

“It's lovely to have gifts like toys for children but it's also nice to have little toiletry packs for a single mum or dad, or a puzzle pack for the elderly … every little thought will go a long way.

“Some other ideas could be schools supplies or a knapsack, drink bottle, pencils, craft items or vouchers from local businesses.

“Alternatively you can purchase a bauble from RSL reception. Funds collected from buying a bauble will go towards buying food, gifts and vouchers from local businesses or specific items that people need.”

All gifts must be new and left unwrapped or placed in a gift bag with the age group and appropriate gender marked on the tag.

Gifts can be placed under the giving tree from mid November until Friday, December 18.

PLANS for this year's Hervey Bay RSL Picnic in the Park are well under way, with the free community event being held at a new location.

Meals will be served in three different settings at 11am, noon and 1pm, with 60 guests at a time.

The popular Christmas Day lunch had been held at the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens for more than a decade, the Memorial Hall last year and, this year, will be held in airconditioned comfort at the Hervey Bay Community Centre.

“The Picnic in the Park has a focus on people from all walks of life in the community that might be lonely and don't have anyone to be with at Christmas and just want to socialise.

The centre's volunteers are taking over the reins from long-time organiser Janet Newman who is away this year but has left CEO Tanya Stevenson with a detailed set of instructions to ensure the muchloved event runs like clockwork.

The community luncheon was founded in 2008 to ensure no one was left lonely on such a special day.

Tanya said the team of hard-working volunteers are looking forward to continuing that tradition, with

ease by Christmas, and we can open it up as a large event again.”

The Hervey Bay RSL has been a major supporter of the event for over a decade, donating $3000 each year to cover running costs.

“It's nice to make sure that everyone has someone to be with on Christmas Day.

If all restrictions are lifted by Christmas, Tanya said the team will revise the serving times and if sold out additional times will be added.

“Everyone enjoys the day and it's lovely for everyone to come together to celebrate and remember that we are all part of the community.”

“We will be monitoring the Covid situation very closely as we come up to Christmas so we will be aware of any new restrictions that we need to follow.

“The funds help pay for the set-up costs, buying the food and the gifts that are given to the people that come as well.”

The lunch will include the same delicious menu of ham, chicken salad and dessert but the serving times will change to adhere to Covid-safe guidelines.

“It is disappointing that we can't have everyone here together, but we need to ensure that safety of the community is our first priority.

More than just sports AT PCYC THE Hervey Bay PCYC is a well-known sporting hub in Hervey Bay where over 500 people walk through the door each week for boxing, netball, gymnastics, dance and so much more.

What most don't see, is the incredible programs that also run behind the scenes of the not-forprofit organisation.

As part of the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program, the RSL donates a massive $20,000 a year to help ensure the longevity of RUBY, Girls United, Deep Blue Line, Teen Scene and Double Digits, a free breakfast for underprivileged youth, and much more.

RSL Community Grants Officer Sarah Bailey said the club has always been a major supporter of the PCYC because they know the donation is fundamental in delivering these vital community programs, which aren't replicated anywhere else in the region.

“We know the incredible difference these programs make in the community,” Sarah said.

“Whether it's seeing at-risk teens pave a better life path for themselves or adults finally realising their dream of passing their licence and getting behind the wheel, every little bit of support from the club goes a long way.”

Sergeant Leigh Nancarrow said RUBY (Rise Up, Be Yourself) was amongst one of the most popular programs, designed as a physical fitness program for women, 16 years and over, who have been affected by Domestic and Family Violence.

“As a group, it's really good. I've seen various levels of Domestic and Family Violence in my career and to see the resilience of these ladies who are not only achieving goals personally, they are also supporting other women in similar circumstances”.

Girls United is another program that is engaging young women from 14 to 17 years of age.

The program is designed to empower women and contribute to general well-being, emotional resilience and confidence through physical exercise.

Starting at Hervey Bay State High School this term, this program gives the girls' the necessary skills to navigate through life with confidence, especially when there's a few curve balls thrown.

Many of the participants are in varying circumstances and the PCYC is a haven where the ladies can come along and feel comfortable in a safe environment, with the added support of a police officer on hand.

Leigh said the program is designed to build physical strength, emotional resilience, self-esteem and confidence through exercise, or just a shoulder to lean on.

“All of our of ladies need support for different things ... this program provides a place for these ladies to connect with other women and delivers the tools to combat the DFV cycle,” she said.

Deep Blue Line is another program the grant covers, which is a mentoring program lead by a police officer to enhance young people's self-esteem, provide positive life experiences through different activities, set life goals and be exposed to healthy role models.

With all the programs each having their own significant impact on the people who take part, Leigh said this was only possible thanks to the funding from the RSL. “It's hard to explain just how much the funding benefits these people and the community.

“These programs just wouldn't run, and it would be so difficult to get what we need through to these young people and victims to show them what they are capable of, and to support them.

“This program is all about youth support and providing a variety of positive life experiences. We also get assistance from different people within the community to provide their experiences and advice from their field,” Leigh said.

“You can see the positive changes it makes in their life and it's just amazing.

“It might be how to prepare for a job interview, how to navigate social media or if when in employment and someone is bullying them, we equip

“I feel very fortunate to be involved in this program because the ladies who come through this program, their backgrounds are various and their history behind them are

TorbaNlea School IMAGINE finally seeing the construction of a school hall come to fruition after a decade of fundraising but having nothing to sit on once the doors opened.

That was the reality for the three volunteers that make up the Torbanlea State School P & C who, for more than 10 years, have hosted everything from fetes to raffle stalls to raise the funds needed to build the 30 x 20-metre multi-purpose hall.

So, you can imagine the excitement of P & C secretary Annie Newbery when she found out the committee had been successful in securing a $5000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant to pay for 248 stackable plastic chairs.

Annie said having something as simple as chairs might sound trivial but, for the 210 students, it has made a world of difference.

“Being able to sit is just awesome,” Annie said with a laugh.

“We can now use them for parade and school photos, and we're

used to go to the library for some relief from the heat while playing in summer and students had to be bused to the Howard Hall for any graduations or ceremonies.

“With the RSL donation, that means that everyone will be able to have a chair to sit on.”

School principal Norm McNamara said the grant from the RSL and further funding from the state government for the hall's stage area, has made an incredible difference to the school community.

Fully equipped with a full-size netball court, tennis and volleyball courts, students can now also play sport rain, hail or shine.

Annie added that having the building will also provide more opportunities for school fundraising and the community, with the hall being available for hire.

“We are so appreciative of the hand that the RSL continues to give us,” Norm said.

The P & C now have their sights set on raising funds to install fans and a projector screen.

“Instead of having to play out in the hot sun they can come in here to play, where previously they had to head to the library to get some shade.

With the RSL donation, that means that everyone will be able to have a chair to sit on.

“Now that the hall is complete, it means we don't have to pay for a bus to have our end of year performance and they (students) won't need to go on the bus three

days a week for practice … they can use this hall and don't have to go anywhere.”

Outriggers keep cool NINETY-TWO members of Fraser Coast Outriggers Club no longer need to brave the elements after being donated two new marquees, proudly displaying the Hervey Bay RSL logo.

The club applied to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program and were successful in securing the $3000 needed to buy the marquees.

“They were really needed due to our growing number of members and travelling to regattas to protect our members from the elements, and to hold events and protect members of the public.”

Members spend plenty of time out in the sun on the water so being able to access some shade cover on the beach has made an incredible difference, said club secretary Tracey Schwarzrock.

Tracey said the Fraser Coast Outriggers are always looking for new members, especially those looking for a fantastic outdoors sport the whole family can take part in.

“It has made a huge difference as we are able to fit most of our members under the tents.

“I have been a member for over seven years', and I love the family environment that outrigging offers,” she said.

“It's a great sport to keep fit and active and enjoy the beautiful waters in Hervey Bay.” If anyone would like to join, they can attend the club's Come & Try Sessions each Sunday at 7.45am.

Bay Special School garden is in full bloom BRINGING a $100,000 sensory garden to life was something the Hervey Bay Special School could only dream of.

But with the help of volunteers and patrons of the Wednesday bingo at the Hervey Bay RSL, and other local businesses, the school was finally able to make that dream a reality.

Paul and Blanch Ninnes host the popular bingo with a crowd of about 180 eager players each week in Hervey House, with the room hire and refreshments donated by the RSL. The volunteer couple, and a handful of helpers, give their time freely at the event to raise funds solely for the Hervey Bay Special School.

Children living with disabilities is something close to Paul and Blanche's heart, which is why they visited the school seven years ago to see if they could help.

The rest is history.

“I have a grandson in Sydney with autism, and I think that was the reason … we see what our kids go through with him and when they asked us to support the special school, that's how we got started,” Paul said.

“I went to the special school and saw not so much what they had, but what they didn't have.”

Since then, the couple have been instrumental in helping to secure many new resources for the school and have played a major part in bringing the Sensory Garden to fruition.

School business manager Anita Eason said this amazing project would not have been possible without their support.

“There are no words to describe the commitment and determination of this amazing couple,” she said. “Their passion for our school and the

students is immeasurable.

WHAT’S IN THE GARDEN

The P&C committee visited the old garden two years ago and realised instantly that it no longer met these requirements.

A large deck with disability access and stage structure to encourage our students to showcase their performances via our Arts program A renovated boat, previously raced in the Burleigh Heads Regattas, with the transom removed and a concrete ramp installed so all students can sit in and enjoy the (audio installed) sounds of the sea, including the waves and seagulls overhead.

The area is now a far cry from the old run-down space, with a terrific mix of different textures, colours, sounds, musical instruments, a dedicated surf lifesaving area and more.

MEET THE KITTY KATS

Fun, fierce and purr-fect AFTER five months off the road due to COVID-19 restrictions, the vivacious Kitty Kats are ready to take all that saved up sass and hit the stage for an electric performance at the Hervey Bay RSL on November 27.

The trio are the best of friends, having met each other by chance in 2014-15 via a mutual friend.

After five sell-out shows at the RSL, Renae said the girls were looking forward to once again performing as guests of the Hervey Bay Jazz Club.

The Kitty Kats first show was on March 5, 2015, and they have been going from strength to strength ever since.

Renae, who is the group's manager and official MD, said there was no better feeling as a singer, musician and entertainer than performing live to an appreciative audience.

Renae said each member has a special talent, making the band totally unique on a whole.

“No show is the same because it is tailored to the demographic of each room and audience we perform for.

With a career spanning over 20 years working around the world in floor shows and in theatres, Susanne brings a high level of performance experience to the group.

“There is nothing like an audience who appreciates live music and are as expressive as the performers on

Susanne Campbell, Michelle Brown and Renae Suttie make up the much-loved Sunshine Coast-based trio, which is well-known for their unique jazz vintage sound with a rock edge.

Michelle is a born entertainer and has been a household name on the Sunshine Coast for almost 30 years.

“Audiences love Michelle,” Renae said, adding that she spends almost as much time off stage as she does on, while mingling with the crowd.

“Her voice is like no other… strong, edgy, passionate, rich and deep, therefore she takes the role of the bass in the trio.”

Renae is a musical virtuoso and can arrange, as well as read and write music. She studied jazz at the Qld Conservatorium of Music and completed a Bachelor of Arts at UQ. She has perfect pitch and a

beautiful, clean, smooth soprano voice, which brings sophistication and class to The Kitty Kats.

The November show is one not to be missed in Hervey House, which is one of the girls' favourite places to perform.

“Whenever we arrive at the club it feels like coming home,” Renae said.

“We have met so many wonderful people who keep coming back to our shows, year after year.

“The staff are always accommodating and willing to help and the venue has everything we need … a large elevated stage with backdrop, a projector and screen, plus bar facilities.”

The show will start at 7pm. Tickets are available at RSL reception at a cost of $20 for Jazz Club members and $25 for non-members.

ENTERTAINMENT PROFILE

SAM MADDISON LISTENING to Sam Maddison you would think that the Hervey Bay singer-songwriter has spent most of her life on the stage.

With her incredible voice and unique alternative country folk music, Sam is easily one of the most sought-after performers in the region, covering about 200 shows a year around the Fraser Coast, Bundaberg, Gympie and beyond.

What most people don't know is that the 42-year-old's very successful music career only started in 2008 after her youngest of three children was born.

The Filipino-born but Aussie raised singer grew up in Western Australia and loved to sing but was encouraged to take on more of stable career choice, rather than focusing on music.

“I grew up musical, but I was discouraged to pursue it as a career … my dad wanted me to be a secretary or a librarian,” Sam said with a laugh.

“I didn't really take music seriously until my youngest was born.”

She is also a regular entertainer at the Hervey Bay RSL, Bayswater Bar & Grill and The Clubhouse Hervey Bay, with many patrons coming out just to hear her sing.

“It's a real staple on my gig guide now, to be at one of those venues at least once a month.”

Sam said these are some of her favourite places to perform.

Sam's stand-out vocals were a hit while busking at just about every weekend market around the region, leading to a full time business.

“Every venue has its own little family and clientele and I'm very lucky that everyone is so good to me as well,” she said.

“I went from busking to booking all these venues … it just went crazy.”

Now the owner of Sam Maddison Music, the artist said it's the positive difference that music can make in a stranger's life that comes her coming back to the stage.

“Over the years I have realised that in this particular job that I can not only change my day by singing, but I can someone's else's day too.

“To bring a smile to someone's face is special.”

VETERANS DAY

You’re in good company AS you walk into the Anzac Bar you can hear the roar of laughter, fun and frivolity coming from the 60-strong crowd at the monthly Veterans Day get together.

That's exactly the kind of atmosphere Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch member Ian Alsop was hoping for when he started the much-loved event about six years ago.

An idea that was born from his days on the Sub-Branch committee at the Beenleigh RSL in Brisbane, Ian said the gathering was all about bringing people from all walks of life together.

“You don't have to be ex-service, the more the merrier,” Ian said.

Ian, who served as a weapons mechanic in the Royal Australian Navy from 1959 to 1971, said the day was also a great opportunity for veterans to share stories and reminisce about days gone by.

“The whole idea was to coax veterans to come back once a month to tell yarns; we've got an Army table, a Navy table and a couple of RAAF blokes,” Ian said.

“It's to get diggers to sit around a table, drink beers and tell lies,” he laughed.

“Some of the conversations here also bring back memories.

“I was on the Alfaturut destroyer with a crew of 14, and there is someone here who served on the same ship as me but three years later after I'd left, and we were swapping stories.

“It's great to have a chat and tell some tales.”

Ian said the Hervey Bay RSL Memorial Club has always been a terrific supporter of the Sub-Branch event, with use of the Anzac Bar, discounted drinks, entertainment and raffle prizes provided.

This year has certainly been a challenge for everyone with the bush fires at the start of the year to the event COVID-19 which certainly has had a major impact on all of us. Thankfully, Queensland has fared better than most thanks to the diligence of us all. At least we can all socialize and move about which has been great for the mental health of everyone.

The community is invited to come along to the next Veterans Day on Tuesday, November 12, from 11am to 1.30pm.

Local well-known musician Frank Benn will entertain.

The RSL also helps host the RSL SubBranch annual Christmas Party, where anyone who supports the exservice community is welcome to attend.

Gerry Taylor and Brian Carrigan have served Hervey Bay Golf Club for many years. Gerry as Head Professional and Brian in a variety of capacities. Both men have and continue to be great servants of Hervey Bay Golf Club and to the game itself.

Gerry has been a Golf Professional at the Golf Club for 30 years. Gerry played competitive golf around the world for 15 years before the opportunity came up to run the Pro Shop at the Hervey Bay Golf Club in 1990. He remembers playing golf in Hervey Bay in 1976 and he fell in love with the place. “Back then there was a population of around 6000, no roundabouts and only two Police Officers” Garry said. Hervey Bay has

changed in the ensuing 30 years, but Gerry's passion for golf remains strong. He continues to enjoy playing, coaching and generally helping the members of the Golf Club.

If you would like to take up the game of golf, Gerry would love to help you get started. This is a perfect transition to bring us to Brian Carrigan or Mr. Carrigan as he is better known to the large group of Junior Golfers at Hervey Bay Golf Club. Brian has held a number of positions at the Golf Club over the years. None more important or rewarding than to be involved with the Junior Program at Hervey Bay Golf Club. A Life Membership was recently bestowed upon Brian at the recent AGM for his dedication and

The Junior Program is structured and provides a pathway from complete novice to a golfer with a Golf Australia handicap which allows the player to compete in competition golf. Juniors practice on Monday and Friday afternoons and play in organised competitions on Sundays.
