THIS weekend, Hervey Bay will pulsate with the roar of engines as the WideBay Rodders host their celebrated annual event ‘May in the Bay’.
The highlight of the festivities, Saturday’s Esplanade Cruise, promises to captivate attendees with a parade of stunning hot rods, classic cars, both Australian and American muscle cars, and vintage motorcycles cruising the foreshore.
Last year, the event’s Show and Shine Day moved to the Sports and Recreation Precinct, where it proved to be a resounding success. This change cemented the day as the largest of its kind in the nation, attracting enthusiasts and spectators from across Australia to marvel at the gleaming displays of automotive history and
craftsmanship.
The festival not only serves as a significant cultural gathering but also as a vital fundraiser, consistently generating over $30,000 for local community initiatives.
It is a cornerstone event that substantially boosts the local economy, with an injection of between $2.5 and $3 million dollars annually. The event draws more than 3,000 visitors, making it an economic juggernaut compared to other local events.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council has played a crucial role in the event’s ongoing success, providing long-term support that helps sustain this important tourism driver. Their efforts, along with those of many other key supporters
and a dedicated group of volunteers, ensure the event’s vibrancy and growth each year.
Major gatherings like ‘May in the Bay’ are more than just car shows, they are a celebration of community and passion.
They provide a platform for enthusiasts to share their interests, offer locals a delightful outing, and draw visitors to the Fraser Coast, enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.
The Wide Bay area is renowned for having the highest concentration of hot rods in the country. Each year, it draws participants from all corners of Australia to Hervey Bay, underscoring its importance as a national hub for automotive enthusiasts.
Land Valuations
I read your article on Land Valuations and I am not happy with the increased value of my property.
The sky rocketing rental and house prices since Covid and everyone moving here to be safe is ridiculous as it is pricing our children and grandchildren out of those markets.
Fine for people moving here who have the money to buy or rent at these prices but not so for the locals who work in low paying jobs like retail.
Also, you mentioned the administration offices and where is the money coming from for this if not from our rates except for the $40,000
million from the government.
The$60 million dollars plus increases over the build is a lot of money for offices for Council workers and a library to borrow books from.
The disaster centre/conference room is better suited to be built in Maryborough. When was the last time Hervey Bay had a disaster like the flooding in Maryborough on a regular basis?
Council pay rises are also mentioned and again most people don’t earn this kind of money in their jobs on the Fraser Coast.
How many hours a week do Councillors work is another question I would like to ask to be entitled to such a wage
compared to hard working residents on longer hours and less money.
Your statement of advancing into the future with opportunity and promise statement is for the developers and people with money and not the residents who are struggling to pay their household expenses and council rates.
So, you can see why residents aren’t happy about the increases being forced on them because people who have the money keep wanting to come and live on the Fraser Coast.
I keep hearing with the increase in population the Government will have to build hospitals, schools etc. but I
cannot find any information that the Government is going to do any of these things and our infrastructure hasn’t been coping with the increase for years now.
So, the Council continues to allow all these high rises, units, houses and retirement villages to be built without limits so the limited resources we have cannot cope.
So again, you can see why residents are not happy with their Council who allow this to happen and the residents continue to suffer.
Delma TaylorResponse to Publisher’s Point
Your Publisher’s Point piece in this week’s publication was misleading as to how economics works, the impact of property prices and land valuation in the Bay on residents (and ultimately renters), and the blame that the Council should take responsibility for.
As someone who just saw our land valuation increase by 30%, and therefore expects a substantial increase in our rates, the town Councils are very much a large part of why we’re seeing these significant increases…and why the benefits are sorely missing for most of us. Let’s look at this soberly.
It’s the Council, going
• Servicing over 120 fleet companies
• Government and Private sectors.
back at least 20 years, that has promoted and approved rampant development and growth in Hervey Bay, which is one of the primary causes of the questionable level of growth and the rise in property values, and now land valuation; the Council didn’t do the valuations, but they are a direct cause of why these have increased dramatically. Did they not know this would be the result of their policies? If Council members do not understand that this type of rapid and unchecked growth would result in dramatic increases in property values and land valuation, which homeowners pay for, that is worrying.
• Whatever the size of your fleet, Ultra Tune Hervey Bay helps to maintain and manage your fleet’s Service needs and costs by tailoring a service schedule to suit.
• Ability to complete full Service to Manufacturer’s Handbook Specifications.
• National coverage with over 280 Ultra Tune Service Centres around Australia.
• Ability to tailor service programs to meet your individual fleet management needs.
• Your one stop shop – offering service and repairs for mechanical, brake, suspension and Air Conditioning systems. Peace of mind with all work backed by a National 6 month or 10,000 kilometre warranty (whichever comes first).
Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm • Saturday 8am-12pm
This rise in property values is NOT, repeat, NOT matched by parallel growth in individual incomes or attracting better paying jobs in the Bay, which is partly the cause of the “affordability crisis” talked about in your previous publication; to compare housing costs with capital cities, and say housing here is a “bargain”, is ludicrous and misleading.
This increase is also significantly above levels in Maryborough, the other part of the Wide Bay this Council represents. You can still buy a nice house for under $500k in Maryborough; what could you get in Hervey Bay for that?
I live, as many do in this town, on a fixed income, which does not keep up with inflation nor property value, and now land valuation, increases.
How many people in this town are earning 30% more than they were a few years ago? Who of us can expect a 30% increase in the next five years, which would be needed if the prediction of significant property value increases, as predicted by the editor, is realised?
From a purely economics perspective, what this means is that when my new rates come out, I will have significantly less money to spend on businesses in the Bay. Saving for a vacation will take longer, and therefore I will be spending less for
longer in the Bay. Take notice all you restaurants, all you retailers, all you small businesses, all you advertisers, since there’s a large percentage of homeowners and renters whose disposable funds will be significantly reduced when the new rates come due.
The Council should take much of the responsibility for less spending here while building a new admin building that most residents question the value of.
All this talk about 70-80% increases in property value is good for a few people, but for the majority of residents, a ticking time bomb. I can sell my house for double what I paid for it five years ago: So what?
Where would I move into in Hervey Bay since all the other houses in town have increased commensurably? There is absolutely nothing remotely decent or, more to the point, as interesting as my current house in the price range I could afford in today’s market if I sold my house at these over-inflated rates.
I have a friend in town who bought their five acre property 20 years ago, which is now worth more than five times what they paid for it; they know they couldn’t buy something better in this market.
They are sad that their children will not be able to afford anything similar… unless they win the lottery
or move to an area where incomes would allow them to save for and afford a house, much less a five acre spread.
One of their children has already moved away from the Bay because there are so few jobs in her field here. The other child is seriously considering moving away.
To say that house prices “could skyrocket by up to 75%” in certain suburbs, when no substantial industry or innovative businesses are coming to this region should send shivers up all of us, especially those of us who have children and grandchildren.
Who will be the beneficiaries of those kinds of property increases? (Hint: realtors are NOT taking a smaller percentage on house sales.)
Good luck buying a house to all you folks who are working in the predominantly service jobs in this town.
Is it a waste of time blaming the Council: yes and no. No, because you can thank the Council, in large part, for this reality; they don’t set the land valuation rates, but they are a significant reason for the 30% increase.
Yes, it may be a waste of time, because their policies, which the newly elected Council members seem to support, will not benefit the overwhelming majority of residents and their children and grandchildren. We all pay the price.

TRIPLE Olympian and wellness entrepreneur Lisa Curry has reached out to a Hervey Bay men’s social group and provided swimming training to help their skills.
She also has used this time to enforce the importance of water safety following the recent drownings in Queensland.
Lisa Curry connected with a local mental awareness group Fraser Coast Mates in 2022 as a guest speaker and has provided continued support with their messaging and promotions since this time.
Along with her husband entertainer Mark Andrew Tabone, who has also supported the group with a number of fundraising nights performances with his nationally recognised Elvis tribute show, their passion for wellness and community lead initiatives his exemplary.
Lisa was made aware of the men’s swimming group Hervey Bay Crocs and wanted to connect and support them for a swimming session.
“Fraser Coast Mates really resonates with me and I see the need to speak more openly about how we feel, particularly with men”.
The Hervey Bay Crocs swim every Saturday at the Hervey
Bay Aquatics Centre and allows for all swimming levels.
The session also timed with a passionate social media plea from Lisa Curry about the importance of swimming skills.
“If you can’t swim, do not go in the water”, says Lisa.
“I couldn’t sleep the other night after hearing the devastating news of the father and grandfather who drowned trying to save their little girl.
It’s a horrendous tragedy and I really feel the need to voice my opinion on this.”
“If you can’t swim and you’re in deep water with your clothes on, in a stressful situation, it is never going to end well. One gulp of water and it’s all over.”
“There are adult swim classes at every pool around Australia so there really are no excuses.”
Hervey Bay Crocs is a men’s social group that has been meeting every Saturday for 14 years. Crocs member Peter Grumley says it’s about the mateship.
“We simply share the time for a bit of physical activity and a chin wag. We have had some wonderful stories over the years of how positive the group has been for their physical and mental health.”

A KEY link road in Dundowran is
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Michelle Govers said road reconstruction works started this week in Purser Road between Craignish Road and Green Acres Road.
“Dundowran and Craignish is a rapidly growing area on the Fraser Coast with many new residents moving in and new businesses being regularly established,” she said.
tear and was identified in Council’s asset inspection program as being in need of an upgrade.
“This particular road in Dundowran is showing significant signs of wear and
“The road reconstruction works will include excavating the existing surfacing and pavement, installing new pavement, widening the road, constructing a new stormwater drainage culvert, bitumen resurfacing, marking and signage.
“Council is responsible for about 2700 kilometres of roads and footpaths throughout the region, with more than $40 million being put towards maintaining roads, footpaths, bridges and drainage this financial year.
“This $1 million upgrade will ensure everyone travelling along Purser Road and through this rapidly growing area of the Fraser Coast will have a safer and smoother journey.”
A one lane/one way traffic arrangement will be in place for the duration of the works, however a full road closure will be put in place while the culvert crossing works are completed, with local traffic only able to access the road during that time.
The project is being carried out by Council’s workforce and is due to be completed by August.
SERIOUS questions over the environmental impact of the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort have been raised by not-for-profit organisation CoralWatch.
Based at The University of Queensland, CoralWatch integrates global reef monitoring with education and outreach to create reef awareness.
Young local businesswoman and passionate environmental spokesperson Breannah Mitchell has identified a number of thought-leading discussions around development and its conscious impact on the surrounding natural landscape.
“Most people understand that what we do on land affects our oceans. Hervey Bay CoralWatch have definite concerns for the future of our marine eco-systems including endangered species that will be impacted by the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort, towering above the Esplanade tree-line and even being visible from K’gari (Fraser Island),” Hervey Bay CoralWatch ambassador Breannah said.
“Many members of our community are scared to speak out about their opposition to the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort and the precedent it will set for future development for fear of backlash from others who think that this kind of development is a good thing for the future of Hervey Bay.”
“Town Plans provide a community with certainty. Residents and Council of Hervey Bay have always understood the negative aesthetic and environmental impacts that go hand in hand with high-rise development above the tree-line.”
“Byron Bay and Noosa Councils have also adopted similar practices.”
“No matter which way you look at it however, this development does nothing to help solve the affordable housing crisis in Hervey Bay.
“We are not suggesting for one second that there shouldn’t be any multi-storey development along the Esplanade, we are only reiterating that development should be in alignment with the
“The height of the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort would be more than three times the current height restrictions for Torquay, and developers have made it clear that it is not profitable for them to invest in Hervey Bay under the current height restrictions.”
Town Plan.”
“The need for five-star accommodation and night life doesn’t automatically mean that two thirds of the development should protrude above the existing tree-line so that every room can have ocean views.”
“Most people move to Hervey Bay for its relaxed beach atmosphere and marine mecca but much of our community do not know that we have unique fringing coral reefs which are easily accessible all along our foreshore.
“It is indeed this point of difference which sets us apart from other tourist destinations like Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Cairns.”
“Even Tourism Queensland and Fraser Coast Tourism and Events don’t seem to know about these reefs and the tourism they could bring to this the region.”
“We are puzzled that there was no original mention of reefs in the development application for the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort or the environmental impacts on the reefs.”
Breannah asserts that some of the corals that can be found on our foreshore reefs include rare and unusual species of coral which are more diverse and well developed than those to the south off the Sunshine Coast and in Moreton Bay.
“What we want to point out to the public is that reefs like these are a rare find. There is nowhere else in Australia that coral reefs are this accessible - just by walking fifty metres into the water from the sandy shores of a major urban centre’.
Continued on page 18
“Coral reefs are steadily disappearing around the globe with our corals in Hervey Bay showing signs of stress from bleaching events.”
“It is our understanding that more than 90% of the stormwater runoff from the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort will be diverted through Tooan Tooan creek (along with accompanying sediment) out onto the new coral reef Marine Park Green zone (MNP17) at Pialba.”
Breannah said vulnerable species of coral, Turbinaria reniformis had been identified in this area.
This coral is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list of threatened species.
“But while plastics and land runoff
are recognised forms of pollution which threaten the health of marine ecosystems, people would be surprised to know that light pollution is also highly damaging.”
“Researchers Dr Thomas Davies (Plymouth University), Prof Tim Smyth (Plymouth Marine Laboratory) and Prof Oren Levy (Bar-llan University) have studied the impacts of artificial light (ALAN) upon coastal eco-systems around the world and have assessed the impact of Hervey Bay’s sky-glow (based on the Global Atlas of light pollution) advising that unlike the Great Barrier Reef, Hervey Bay’s coral reefs are incredibly close to shore which make them highly susceptible to adverse impacts from light pollution.”
“They have confirmed that light emitted from high rise buildings such as the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort will directly penetrate the ocean’s surface, impacting upon all local coral reefs and ultimately compromising their ability to spawn, grow and recover from natural stressors such as bleaching and the impact of floods.”
“Further research indicates that artificial light interrupts the functioning of the entire marine eco-system and its organisms which rely upon the protection of darkness to rest or feed.”
“Endangered Loggerhead turtles nest on Hervey Bay Beaches including Torquay Beach. If the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort development is allowed to proceed beyond the tree-line,
they would no longer want to nest there due to light spillage onto the beach and foreshore reefs as well as increased human traffic.”
Fraser Coast loggerhead turtle nest relocation/shell count nest group founders Don and Lesley Bradley have been discreet in their efforts to manage the turtle nests for the past ten years so that human and animal interference is kept to a minimum.
“Torquay Beach is a perfect nesting beach for turtles to lay their eggs on the sandy dunes as the beach is very dark because of the vegetation behind it,” Lesley said.
“Loggerhead turtle nests are increasing in Hervey Bay year by year, in comparison to Mon Repos where there have been a lot lower numbers than average.”
“More turtles are coming further south to nest to increase the chance of male turtle hatchlings. This has been shown by turtle counts on Cooloola Coast and Northern New South Wales.”
“As the waters are becoming warmer, turtle nests are being dominated by female hatchlings.”
“Keeping in mind that turtles don’t necessarily nest every year, nor at the exact same spot, they may try to nest at other beaches within the region that they were born.
“For instance, a turtle may find it crowded at Gatakers Bay or Mon Repos and decide to nest on Scarness or Torquay beach instead.”
“Green sea turtles forage in Hervey Bay waters and lay their eggs on the islands and coral cays but mostly it is the endangered loggerheads that nest along the coastal beaches of this region.”
“If Turtles are startled, they may drop their eggs on the beach or into water as they try to hurry back to the safety of the ocean. If the light from the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort is above the trees, the light will then confuse the turtles trying to nest and they will think that it is the ocean because it would be the brightest light.”
“Keeping our unique coral reefs healthy will not only ensure our foreshore is protected from erosion and catastrophic impacts of tidal surge, but it also offers our youth with opportunities to connect intimately with nature without the need for a boat.”
“Our coral reefs are part of the Great Sandy Biosphere which present tertiary study/research opportunities for our youth as well. Many readers would have spent quiet moments on the shores of Point Vernon or out on their boat only to find themselves captivated by the sight of the Hervey Bay foreshore and surrounds being devoid of all reminders of civilization.”
“This, is what truly attracts visitors to this region.”
“Greater pride, awareness and promotion of our natural assets will boost our local economy without the need for high-rise development above the tree-line.”
FRASER Coast residents are being encouraged to help officially name a much-loved park in Craignish.
Cr Michelle Govers said the park on the corner of PialbaBurrum Heads Road and Petersen Road in Craignish had undergone several upgrades in recent years, including the addition of a new car park and shade over the playground.
“The Craignish park has evolved over the years and features a BMX track, playground, basketball court, walkways, BBQ facilities and an off-leash area for dogs where small dogs can be kept separate from big dogs,” she said.
“It has become a community hub for all ages with opportunities to be physically active or to relax in a green space.
“Now Council needs your help in choosing an appropriate name for the park. We’re looking for a name that reflects the park’s character, location, and community values.
“Whether it’s inspired by nearby landmarks, the history of our region, or something commemorative, we want to hear your creative suggestions
in line with Council’s Parks and Reserves Naming Policy.
“If you recommend an individual, family, or organisation, they should have made a substantial contribution to the area’s development or broader region, demonstrated commitment to public service, had community support, and maintained a positive reputation.
“It’s fantastic to see how local families have embraced this park and we’re looking forward to officially naming it to reflect the community’s ideas.”
For more information on Council’s Parks and Reserves Naming Policy visit: https://

Naming suggestions can be submitted via Council’s Engagement Hub website at https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/ naming-craignish-park by 8 May 2024.
Council will also be partnering with HBNC for a ‘Meet the Neighbours’ event at the Craignish park on 8 May from 3pm to 4.30pm. Residents are invited to come along to share their naming ideas and enjoy a free ice-cream and children’s activities.

VAPING and the widespread uptake of this vice are constantly hitting the headlines.
To help navigate the wealth of information out there and find out the true impact of vaping on an individual’s health and that of the broader community, Bridges Health & Community Care have partnered with Blurred Minds to bring a quality education program to the region.
As a leading provider of drug and alcohol rehabilitation and treatment services in Wide Bay, Bridges staff saw the rising use of vaping in young people and the need for better knowledge about the health implications of using vapes.
has announced free access for Queensland schools for the Blurred Minds Academy which is an online education program to change the way younger generations think and interact with alcohol, vaping, and other drugs.
Bridges CEO and psychologist, Sharon Sarah stated that “What we have is an unregulated market, and imported vaping products that are currently not tested for safety and quality in Australia, so they contain unknown chemicals which can be harmful.
Ms Sarah stated that “while vapes can be an effective tool in reducing the harms associated with tobacco smoking, the uptake of vaping by young people and the extent of its use is out of control.”
The Queensland Government
through Carinity Education Glendyne, Urangan State High School, St James Lutheran College and Fraser Coast Anglican College (FCAC) from 29th May – 4th June.
Bridges has partnered with Blurred Minds to bring an in-person vaping education program into our community and secondary schools to reinforce the important messages of this program.
CEO of Bridges, Sharon Sarah stated, “We are keen to see this valuable information on vaping shared so that our communities can make informed choices and ensure that locals have a direct link and referral pathway to our drug and alcohol service for follow up if required.”
The program will be delivered
A workshop open to parents, carers and interested community members will be held on Monday 3rd June 6-7pm at FCAC and a whole of region Teacher workshop being held on Tuesday 4th June 3.45-4.45pm.

IN THE pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, the role of alcohol in weight management warrants closer examination.
While the idea of quitting drinking entirely for weight loss purposes may not be the only solution, understanding the adverse effects of alcohol consumption on calorie intake and overall health is crucial.
Beyond its effects on the scale, alcohol introduces significant calorie intake, often unnoticed.
Every gram of alcohol contains seven calories, which can add up quickly, especially considering the typical portion sizes of alcoholic beverages.
These calories, when consumed alongside unhealthy food choices commonly associated with drinking, can sabotage weight loss efforts.
Moreover, alcohol is not just about the calories it contains. It’s also essential to acknowledge its impact as a toxin on the body.
When consumed, alcohol is metabolised differently from other macronutrients, prioritising its breakdown and potentially interfering with the body’s ability to efficiently burn fat.
This disruption in metabolic
processes can further hinder weight loss goals.
Additionally, the environments in which alcohol is typically consumed may not align with healthy lifestyle choices.
Social gatherings often revolve around drinking, accompanied by high-calorie
snacks and meals. This setting can make it challenging to maintain moderation and make nutritious food choices, further complicating weight management efforts.
To address these challenges, individuals may need to reassess their social circles and environments to find support for healthier choices.
Surrounding oneself with individuals who prioritise health and wellness can provide encouragement and reinforcement in making positive changes.
For those struggling with alcohol dependency or its impact on weight and overall health, seeking professional help is crucial.
Support groups, counselling, or medical intervention can offer guidance and assistance in navigating this complex journey towards holistic wellbeing.
In conclusion, the question of whether one needs to quit drinking to lose weight is part of a broader conversation about fostering a healthier relationship with alcohol and our bodies.
By acknowledging the adverse effects of alcohol calories and toxins on weight management and overall health, individuals can make informed choices to support their well-being and embark on a journey towards a balanced lifestyle.
The LiveWell Hervey Bay podcast recently sat down with Dr Nick Yim, Vice President of Australian Medical Association Queensland (AMA).
Dr Nick is not only the owner and GP for Torquay and Craignish Doctors, but also forms part of the Fraser Coast Medical Association and holds a position within the University of Queensland.
The focus of the podcast was around Dr Nick’s background and journey into medicine and the importance of preventative health care.
Dr Nick comes from a family of pharmacists and initially that was his career path.
“A group of friends suggested I take a medical exam to see if I could get in and here I am today,” Dr Nick explained.
“I was born in Brisbane and saw
the opportunity 10 years ago to move to Hervey Bay.”
“I love fishing and K’Gari so I though why not give it a shot.”
“We took over Torquay and Craignish doctors a couple of years ago.”
“Our key goals are servicing the community and enhancing health care.”
“We have a great team of Clinicians, Nurses and Administration staff and hope to offer a seven-day practice in the future.”
“In healthcare, gone are the days of Clinicians working 80 to 100 hours per week because we acknowledge that burnout is a thing.”
“You will see many Clinicians, myself included working in practices but also taking on other roles.”
“I myself work with patients at Fraser Coast Hospice, Nursing
Homes and work in Medical education.”
“We can’t be experts in everything but we do need new interests and new stimulations.”
A real trend across society is to be healthier and to live longer.
“For many years and still to this day many people seek a healthcare team reactively.”
“We are slowly seeing this change.”
“Prevention is key and prevention is better than a cure.”
“It’s like your car, we take it to the mechanic to get those little checkups, the oil changed, tyres checked etc.”
“Obviously genetics have a role to play but your lifestyle can be a big contributor to your health down the track.”
“Stress is also a big factor, we are all getting busier, that’s the reality.”
“Financial stress and physical stress are contributing factors which then leads into mental health problems.”
Dr Nick touched on the current vaping trend sweeping through schools.
“Why was vaping initially produced and who is producing these products? And who’s benefiting from it?”
“From a medical perspective, vaping is not the first, it is not the second, nor is it the third line in for quitting cigarette.”
“There are many other strategies to quit cigarettes and vaping isn’t one of them.”
“We are seeing younger and younger people taking up vaping and becoming addicted to nicotine, and many of them have never
smoked a cigarette.”
“More community and home education is needed.”
Although most don’t believe it, here on the Fraser Coast we have a first-class healthcare system, when compared with other regions across the world.
“Healthcare is relatively affordable.”
“Our population has grown significantly over the past five years.”
“The great challenge that we do have is that of our health workforce, we’re short. Across the whole country, we’re short.”
“The issue is not the Emergency Department, it’s the Health System that has a flow on effect.”
“We do have top-notch specialists living and some visiting the Fraser Coast.”
“At the same time you may need to
see someone publicly and make your way to Brisbane, although it might actually be more cost effective to see someone here privately.”
Where does Dr Nick Yim see himself moving forward?
“I want to get into more advocacy positions, not just locally but at a state level.”
“This year I hope to become the President of AMA Queensland.”
“I want to make some real change in my industry at scale.”
“But everyone needs some down time, so on Monday nights you will find me down the fields playing touch football.”
“Walking the dogs along the beach and also enjoying a bit of fishing.”
“Don’t look too far forward, be in the moment, value those memories and enjoy yourself.”

MELANIE Bragg reflects on her upbringing as a mix of positive experiences tinged with instability.
Born in Townsville in 1993, she moved through eight different schools and lived in about ten different houses before she became a teenager.
The family of six was always on the move due to her dad being a builder and her mum in real estate.
As the eldest of four, Melanie took on responsibility early, especially when her mom unexpectedly became pregnant with triplets, though sadly, one didn’t survive.
Her dad worked tirelessly to support the family, while her mom managed the kids on her own. Melanie’s teen years were tough as she was taught that emotions were bad, and often, she was told to suppress them.
This led to depression and a sense of isolation. Her struggles spiralled into anxiety, PTSD, acts of rebellion,
suicidal thoughts, and self-harm.
The hospital visit from her father after a self-harm incident was a turning point showing Melanie that her family cared deeply.
After fourteen years of trying various traditional therapies, with no significant progress, Melanie was feeling profoundly broken.
Discovering trauma literature, like “The Body Keeps the Score,” by Dr Bessel van der Kolk, and Johann Hari’s “Lost Connections,” was transformative and offered new insights and therapies.
This knowledge was instrumental in changing the course of Melanie’s healing, offering her a clearer perspective on the various paths to recovery.
Thanks to the guidance from these books, Melanie immersed herself in researching psychologists who specialise in various therapeutic
modalities. Fortunately, she found one that offered a diverse range of up-todate and research-backed therapies.
Not every approach suits every individual. Melanie finds it frustrating to see mental health care relying on one-size-fits-all solutions when everyone’s circumstances are different.
Through these therapies, combined with a therapist, Melanie has come further in two years than in the last sixteen years of therapy and other approaches combined.
She has had some incredible moments since then: Looking into the eyes of a humpback whale, receiving heartfelt hugs from grateful individuals, raising funds for mental health, backpacking across Europe, and appreciating life’s beauty. Yet, the most profound has been learning self-love.
For many years Melanie didn’t believe in herself, nor the care the
mental health system could provide.
By Kim Parnell from What’s On Fraser CoastTherefore, she avoided working in it even though she was passionate about the subject. Melanie has worked in sales, marketing and management, organised events, and even hosted whale-watching tours.
Now, for the first time, she is exploring the mental health field, working at Harmony Pathways and Fraser Coast Disability Services, and starting at Wide Bay Hospital Service.
Last year, she completed Mental Health Cert IV and now is pursuing Mental Health Peer Work IV. It’s early days, but she is proud of taking these new steps.
Rob, Melanie’s partner, is a firefighter and army vet, whose strength and kindness aid Melanie’s healing.
Together for seven years, the couple recently bought their first home in Hervey Bay and share it with their
beloved Rottweiler, Zico.
“Our life is built on love and mutual support, paving the way for future possibilities,” says Melanie.
Over the next twelve months, Melanie looks forward to continuing to embrace newfound love and freedom, enjoying time with loved ones, pursuing personal growth, sustaining positive changes, diving into the mental health field, and advocating for mental health awareness while inspiring others with her story.
She has learnt to value and understand herself and embrace past decisions.
Despite life’s ups and downs, Melanie loves who she is and now lives not just to make others happy, but because she genuinely wants to.
This newfound self-love and desire to live for her own sake is empowering.
AS WE Navigate the post-COVID landscape, Fraser Coast is experiencing a transformative population boom.
Pre-pandemic, our population stood at approximately 106,796.
Fast forward just four years, and this number has surged to 118,505.
With projections originally set for 130,706 by 2041, current trends suggest we could see numbers between 150,000 and 160,000 within 20 years.
This rapid growth isn’t just a statistic; it’s a clarion call for urgent action.
The average age in our community has increased from 48 to 51 years during the pandemic, indicating a shift towards an older demographic.
This demographic shift requires us to rethink our housing strategy, moving beyond traditional houses to more diverse living options that cater to an aging population.
However, the most pressing challenge lies in our infrastructure.
Current planning still relies on outdated pre-COVID growth figures, leaving essential services like health, roads, schools, sports, community facilities and
town planning underprepared for the future.
This oversight could significantly impact our quality of life and the economic vitality of the Fraser Coast.
Moreover, we must address the exodus of our youth.
As our brightest leave for
opportunities elsewhere, our region risks stagnation.
The recent decisions, such as the Scarness Caravan Park development, underscore a missed opportunity to create spaces that attract and retain young people, blending local charm with modern attractions.
It could have been a lagoon pool, nightlife and entertainment precinct, bustling with restaurants, parks and things to do for the younger generation, instead we catered for the retired visitors.
To secure a thriving future, we must embrace change, innovate our approach to urban planning, and build a community that holds promise for all ages.
The time to act is now, ensuring that Hervey Bay not only grows but thrives.

OUR COMMUNITY Voice shined the light on the vulnerable groups of Hervey Bay for seven monthly features. The topics we have covered include Mental Health, Homelessness, Disability sector and our Seniors community.
Hervey Bay is blessed with some tremendous services that support these sectors and groups, with many of these services reliant on the unsung heroes of our community – volunteers.
At the heart of this region lies a rich tapestry of volunteerism, where individuals come together to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the community at large.
In this edition, we explore the manifold benefits of volunteering in Hervey Bay and how it enriches the lives of both volunteers and the community they serve.
We highlight some of the wonderful organisations that rely on the kind donation of individuals of their finite resource available to them.
Volunteering in Hervey Bay provides an opportunity for individuals to connect with their community on a deeper level. Whether it’s participating in local events, supporting charitable initiatives, or joining community clean-up efforts, volunteers develop a sense of belonging and pride in contributing to the betterment of their region.
Engaging in volunteer work allows individuals to forge meaningful connections with like-minded individuals who share a passion for service and giving back. Whether it’s collaborating on a community project or lending a helping hand to those in need, volunteers form bonds that transcend social barriers and foster a sense of camaraderie.
Volunteering facilitates social connection and belonging by bringing individuals together in shared endeavors and collective acts of service. Through volunteering, individuals forge meaningful relationships, build social networks, and cultivate a sense of belonging to a supportive community of like-minded individuals. These social connections serve as a buffer against loneliness and isolation, promoting emotional well-being and resilience.
Numerous studies have shown that volunteering has a positive impact on mental health and overall well-being. By dedicating their time and energy to helping others, volunteers experience a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and satisfaction that boosts their mood and reduces stress levels.
Volunteering also provides a sense of structure and routine, which can be beneficial for individuals seeking to improve their mental health.
Engaging in volunteer work can serve as a form of stress reduction and relaxation, providing individuals with an opportunity to step away from the pressures of daily life and focus on activities that bring joy and fulfillment. The act of giving back and helping others releases feel-good hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins, which promote feelings of happiness, relaxation, and overall well-being.
Volunteering offers individuals a broader perspective on life and cultivates a sense of gratitude for the blessings and privileges they enjoy. By witnessing the struggles and hardships faced by others, volunteers gain a deeper appreciation for their own circumstances and develop a greater sense of empathy, compassion, and humility.
The unique opportunity for personal and professional growth by allowing individuals to acquire new skills, expand their knowledge, and gain valuable experience in various fields. Whether it’s honing leadership abilities, improving communication skills, or learning
about different cultures, volunteers can broaden their horizons and enhance their resume through meaningful volunteer work. One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering in Hervey Bay is the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of others and the community as a whole.
Hervey Bay is well recognised for it’s “giving community” with GoFundMe naming our town in 2021 as the “most generous” community based on donations per capita. While monetary donations fuel the many charitable organisations and services reliant on donations, it’s the valuable resource of personal time that helps deliver the need for the numerous local needing communities.
Rally For A Cause, celebrating it’s 10 year of Dunga Derby events, has now supported over 300 families as recipients of support in desperate circumstances. The amazing organisation was born from volunteers and commitment from Hervey Bay locals that wanted to support families facing challenging times with illness affecting a family member.
One of the foremost challenges for volunteer groups is the limitation of resources, including funding, manpower, and materials. With limited financial resources and a reliance on unpaid labor, volunteer organisations often face constraints in implementing projects, acquiring necessary supplies, and sustaining long-term initiatives.
Balancing the need to maximise impact with limited resources requires strategic planning, creative problemsolving, and effective resource management.
Recruiting and retaining volunteers is a perennial challenge for volunteer groups, particularly in an era marked by busy schedules and competing demands for time and attention.
Attracting individuals who are passionate about the organisation’s mission, committed to its values, and willing to contribute their time and skills can be a daunting task. Moreover, retaining volunteers over the long term requires cultivating a supportive and inclusive culture, providing meaningful opportunities for engagement, and recognising and appreciating volunteer contributions.
Elizabeth Campbell, People and Culture Coordinator for Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, also chairs a Volunteers Managers Network meeting that gains feedback from the many organisations that require volunteers.
“I find most volunteers are scared and don’t know where to go to begin or they sit at home and think about it but are not used to being around people or are isolated and need a social outlet as well as volunteering,” says Elizabeth.
Effective communication and coordination are essential for the success of volunteer groups, yet they often pose significant challenges.
Leveraging technology, establishing regular communication channels, and fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration can help mitigate communication challenges and facilitate effective teamwork.
Hervey Bay is fortunate to have a higher demographic of a retired community, yet the twilight of their lives can be enticed by travel and family commitments as is deserved for this stage of life.
Burnout and volunteer fatigue are prevalent issues that volunteer groups must address to ensure the well-being and sustainability of their members.
The demanding nature of volunteer work, coupled with the pressures of balancing personal and professional commitments, can lead to physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion among volunteers. Implementing strategies to prevent burnout, such as establishing manageable workloads, promoting self-care practices, and offering opportunities for rest and rejuvenation, is essential for maintaining volunteer morale and engagement. While volunteerism offers countless rewards and opportunities for personal and collective growth, it also presents a host of challenges that volunteer groups must navigate with resilience, creativity, and determination.
By addressing resource constraints, enhancing volunteer recruitment and retention efforts, improving communication and coordination, combating burnout and volunteer fatigue, and promoting diversity and inclusion, volunteer organizations can overcome obstacles and thrive in their mission to make a positive impact on society.
By embracing the healing power of giving, we not only nourish our own mental health but also contribute to the creation of a more compassionate, empathetic, and resilient society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
The willingness to volunteer may appear to be a simple and rewarding decision, yet many are unsure and in particular, which organisation do you choose. Whether you’re passionate about serving your community, supporting a cause you believe in, or simply seeking to give back, becoming a volunteer opens doors to endless opportunities for personal growth and social impact.
The question every person should ask themselves is – what your passion and interests are?
Reflecting on your passions, interests, and values to consider the causes or issues that resonate with you deeply and align with your personal beliefs and values.
The next stage is researching the organisations that aligns upon your reflection.
The opportunity to reach and connect with these organisations has an ideal upcoming event for prospective volunteers.
The Purposeful Volunteering Expo will launch National Volunteer Week on the Fraser Coast with the expo on Monday 20th May 10am to 1pm at the Urangan Community Wellness Centre, Elizabeth Street (opposite Miller Street), Urangan.
You can explore a sea of opportunities that offers the chance for your skills to make a real difference. There will be a showcase of groups that are actively in need of volunteers and the public have the opportunity to speak directly with these groups.
There is no cost for entry and 5 door prizes for people who attend. These prizes including a helicopter ride, free pass to an aquarium and other vouchers.
All volunteer groups and people interested in volunteering are welcome with a coffee van there, Fraser Coast FM broadcasting from the event and local radio station and a separate area where local volunteers from local organisations will be discussing their volunteer journey.
You can call the Learning Hub on 4194 3000 for further assistance.
JUST over 12 months ago, we witnessed the introduction of a sleepbus to Hervey Bay that now provides a safe and comfortable sleep for the homeless APEX three nights a week.
The initiative was all made possible due to a $100,000 donation by the Community Bank Hervey Bay, part of the Bendigo Bank, sleepbus has changed the lives of hundreds of people that struggle to find what most of our population take for granted.
The generous donation has afforded the build of a sleepbus vehicle, which provides a safe, temporary overnight accommodation service, providing the homeless an immediate, first stop, cost-effective solution for our society’s most vulnerable.
The value of a comfortable night sleep can never be underestimated.
sleepbus has up to 20 secure, climate controlled, individual sleep pods with a lockable door and toilet. Everyone is looked after with overnight volunteer caretakers and CCTV surveillance, with under bus storage for belongings, and pets are welcome to stay also.
This operation does not happen with the important contribution from local volunteers.
Nat ‘slumberjack’ Genoni, Services Coordinator for sleepbus, says the service relies on volunteers and someone’s night sleep is determined by their support.
“Some of the busiest nights we have
experienced from supporting regions across Australia has been in Hervey Bay”, says Nat.
“We have diehard core volunteers that makes this happen but we need more so we don’t burn these wonderful people out”. There are four main roles they require volunteers with:
• Caretaker
• Service Volunteer
• Housekeeping
• Driver Nat says the Caretaker role in particular needs recruitment as they currently rely on a few people for the 12 hour shift. She says they protected in a safe environment and they train all volunteers prior to being in the roles.
“We are happy to train anyone before they make the decision to volunteer”, says Nat.
One of their most popular Hervey Bay volunteers is 11 year old Toby. He provided housekeeping support and even turned up for sleepbus with a broken ankle, happily delegating duties and stuffing pillows into cases.
Drivers are also challenging to find as they require a MR Licence with previous experience.
People who are interested can check out all the roles and videos on their volunteer page and you can sign up and get onboard! https:// www.sleepbus.org/volunteer
FRASER Coast Hospice is a palliative care facility that offers flexible patient and family centres model of care for the community who have a terminal illness at no cost.
The six bed purpose built centre provides an important transition for people in the final phase of their life who require comfort and a family friendly environment that our community is fortunate to have introduced in recent years.
For many, the special care needs that they wish for and require during that time of their life, are not readily available at home or in an acute hospital setting.
The Hospice provides a safe, welcoming space, where clients and loved ones can feel supported. Family members can resume their roles as spouse, child, parent or concerned friend, and step back from the role of carer, which many families can struggle to cope with.
While the Hospice provides full qualified dedicated nursing staff, practitioners and health professionals, the facility relies on the generous support from volunteers. They make a difference to the lives of people and their families who are suffering from a terminal illness
Gayle, a volunteer at the facility, says “I enjoy my work immensely and endeavour to educate others on the benefits of being a volunteer in the hospice, and carrying out our mission to “celebrate the significance of human life and recognise dying as a natural process.”
“This leads me to say being a volunteer with the hospice is very rewarding.”
“The Hospice team has become my second family and has made my professional and personal world’s complete,” says Gayle
Volunteering roles at the Fraser Coast Hospice include:
• Front Reception – greeting & directing visitors, answering the telephone, recording mail in and mail out and other reception duties.
• Administration – accounts and typing.
• Housekeeping – keeping the guest area clean and comfortable for clients and their families.
• Kitchen – preparing meals for clients.
• Gardening and Maintenance –assist to keep our grounds looking beautiful so that clients and their families enjoy their surrounds.
• Courier – deliver and pick up around the local area.
• Fundraising – raising the vital funds that we need to continue to offer our service to the community.
• Pastoral Care – a specially trained team of volunteers providing emotional and spiritual support for clients and their families.

COMMUNITY Bank Hervey Bay, a part of the Bendigo Bank, is committed to providing sustainable funding to the Fraser Coast Region.
As a Community Bank model, they must deliver 80% of their profits back to the community in which those profits were generated, many of those groups supported by volunteers.
A recent initiative they have launched is recognising the importance of volunteering and the opportunity to use this labour donation to raise funds for a nominated school.
Doing Good By Doing Good is aiming for 5000 hours of volunteer work that has the potential to deliver $100,000 to local schools.
Schools have the ability to be the beneficiary of funding through the coordination of volunteers for a community based initiative.
This can be achieved through a couple of options related to volunteering. By arranging and providing volunteers for local charities and not for profit organisations, volunteer hours will be paid to the school at a rate of $20 per hour.
As an example, if a school is able to arrange 100 volunteer hours over the course of a term, the Community Bank will provide the school with $2000 in funding toward a program, equipment or service.
The other opportunity is by partnering with a local charity
or not for profit group to raise funds for that organisation. If a school partners with organisation and raises funds for that charity, the Community Bank will match the amount to the school for their allocated program.
Tim Evans, Branch Manager for the Community Bank, says this aligns with the community projects they have identified where volunteering reflects the heart of a community.
“Volunteering can begin from any age group and there is no better way to involve schools and possibly encourage our youth to feel that satisfaction that many of our community understand,” says Mr Evans.
“While our schools can benefit from important funds, we see this program having a much more long lasting influence with encouraging volunteerism.”
“We recognise the significant contribution not for profit organisations provide that many rely on volunteers and this program is aimed at encouraging people to be a part of a community connection.”
Examples of eligible projects or activities that can qualify for this support include repair of improvement of existing equipment that provides an improved outcome to education or health to students or additional services that benefit the learning and health outcomes for students.
Application forms can be gained from the Community Bank Hervey Bay branch.
ACCESS to health services locally is improving with every year correlating with our region growing in population. Yet, there are still health issues that will require travel to larger facilities and primarily Brisbane.
Community Flights is a not-for-profit registered charity with a mission “to close the gap to healthcare access” for regional and rural Queensland patients.
Fraser Coast is very fortunate to have this free of charge aircraft transport for eligible patients and carers available to nonemergency medical treatment and services.
The organisation was created from a local pharmacist, Mark McMurtrie, who was hearing more frequent stories of his pharmacy customers struggling to find specialist treatment in the area.
“The long distance travel for heart, brain and cancer therapy is financially and emotionally difficult,” says Mark “Each month there is over 440 patients are in need of transport from Hervey Bay and Bundaberg alone.”
Some of their recipients include 11 month year old Jaxon. The young baby was born with bone and joint complications, having to travel to Brisbane since birth for many specialist appointments and surgeries.
Previously Jaxon was spending up to 10 hours travelling on a
bus. He now can claim frequent flyer points with this community service.
While the flights required experienced pilots that volunteers can be a challenge to find, it’s the support on the ground that has became an important focus for Community Flights to achieve their goals for supporting people in need.
Some of the volunteer roles they require assistance with include:
Monthly Newsletter Organiser - creating monthly newsletter and distributing to local medical related businesses and clinics - 5hrs/ month
“Fun in fundraiser” Event Crew - helping to organise and run fundraising events - 5 hrs/week
Community Awareness Crew - Running market stalls, meeting community groups or health related businesses - 10-30 hrs/month

VOLUNTEERING in the Fraser Coast is not only a selfless act of service but also a transformative experience that enriches the lives of volunteers and the community alike.
From fostering a sense of belonging and building meaningful relationships to enhancing well-being, acquiring new skills, and making a tangible impact, the benefits of volunteering are manifold and far-reaching.
As residents of Fraser Coast continue to embrace the spirit of volunteerism, they contribute to a more compassionate, resilient, and vibrant community that thrives on the principles of unity, compassion, and solidarity.
In many eyes – they are seen as Heroes!
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) works with volunteers and the many organisations that are reliant on the volunteers within our community.
Their mission is “to provide a place for people to belong, feel safe and be connected to a community of support. Our programs focus on all community members at any stage of life, including those who are vulnerable or isolated.”
HBNC wishes to recognise the wonderful contribution from community minded people with a new publication that highlights the selfless dedication on their time, energy and expertise that elevates our local community.
In partnership with Volunteering Queensland, they are launching
the Fraser Coast Heroes Story Book, telling the stories of local volunteers.
“Volunteers are community heroes, and their passion for making a difference in the community deserves to be acknowledged,” says Operations Manager for HBNC, Christian Berechree.
“That’s what the Fraser Coast Heroes Volunteer Story Book is all about - bringing stories of selfless service together all in one place.”
If you know someone whose selfless efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of others, or perhaps it’s a tireless mentor, a compassionate healthcare worker, or a dedicated environmentalist.
The book provides a platform for the appreciative community and beneficiaries of their service, to nominate their “hero”.
Tanya Stevenson, CEO for HBNC, witnesses the enrichment and benefits to the community of volunteers on a daily basis.
“What is particularly special about this book is it shows the incredible variety of community projects, programs and activities volunteers are involved with,” says Tanya.
“If you are looking to volunteer, there are so many ways to get involved in our community. I encourage community members to reach out to the groups represented in the book, plus many others that can be found on The Little Libraryhttps://thelittlelibrary.com.au/”
