Capitalism is alive and well in Hervey Bay.
Every spare block of land is being gobbled up.
Our wildlife do not have a chance.
Stranded Kangaroos squeezed into less space.
Family of six stranded on the one remaining block of land at Doolong and Main Streets.
That too has been staked out by surveyors recently.
Five ducks run down on Main St leaving one remaining animal traumatised wondering what happened to its family.
Cr Lachlan Cosgrove recently secured unanimous support at a Council meeting for a crucial initiative concerning the future of the Point Vernon Esplanade Foreshore.
The Council will soon review a special report recommending an increase in service levels for open space maintenance between the Pines and Esa Park in Point Vernon. Additionally, the possibility of redesignating this area as a highprofile zone will be considered.
This issue has been a longstanding concern for decades. In 2017, the Council introduced a comprehensive plan to enhance the foreshore, aiming to improve its visual appeal and address the presence of weeds. However, progress has since regressed.
In response, the Point Vernon Foreshore Enhancement Group has launched a petition, urging the Fraser Coast Regional Council to
I have witnessed at least 30 plus Kangaroos killed on Main and Doolong Roads.
Has anyone thought about wildlife corridors?
It’s all about the money and greed for more. When will it end?
I have lived in Hervey Bay for 70 years and it goes without saying, I have seen change.
However, I’m pleased to say the area in which I walk has not changed.
I am referring to the Pialba –Point Vernon foreshore.
In fact, it has been enhanced. It is now possible to walk from the Pines on the grassy foreshore to the vicinity of Banksia Street.
When I was a child, access was impossible from below Halcro Street.
I am pleased to report, when walking on the beach and looking from Point Vernon, the view is much similar to what it was in the Fifties except for a very few buildings of approved height, nestled within the “tree line”.
Having said that, I was dismayed to read of the
address the ongoing neglect of this valued foreshore. The petition supports Cr. Cosgrove’s motion for increased maintenance and enhancement efforts.
At the time of this publication, the petition had garnered signatures from hundreds of residents and was increasing daily.
The group claims that the foreshore’s maintenance has declined, resulting in overgrown grass, weeds, and saplings, which have contributed to an untidy and unappealing appearance. They also express concerns about changes made to the area without adequate consultation with local residents, contrary to the Council’s 2012 key objectives.
Community consultation is at the forefront of the group’s concerns.
They are calling on the Council to actively engage with residents to ensure the foreshore meets
the community’s needs. Preservation and safety are also top priorities, with the group seeking action to eliminate vermin, restore parklands, and implement erosion control measures.
The concerns raised by these residents are difficult to dispute. In its current state, the Point Vernon foreshore falls below the standard that the Council would tolerate if it were a private vacant block of local land.
Local representation has been overly green for the past eight years, compromising the safety and well-being of the area.
This situation presents an early test for firstterm Councilor Cosgrove, who faces significant scrutiny to deliver the desired outcomes.
To learn more about the petition and lend your support, scan the QR code provided.
Council’s approval of the proposed 18-story high rise on the Torquay Esplanade.
The tree line will be interrupted by an unaccustomed, obtrusive, bulky building.
In other words, a “blot on the landscape”.
This is not in keeping with the Hervey Bay I know, the one that has a unique foreshore of hardwood species including the various eucalyptus, cottonwoods and cypresses; this natural vegetation has not been removed and replaced by the planting of Norfolk Pines as in other coastal cities.
The very worst scenario is
likely now, that is, of other buildings of similar height being approved.
The Council will be drawn to the “slippery slope”.
We do not need such facilities to attract tourists.
Hervey Bay is loved by many families who enjoy their holidays here.
The traffic congestion at these times is proof of this fact.
Our accommodation centres including caravan parks all prosper during these times.
I feel I am living on “borrowed time” as I gaze across the Bay admiring its unspoilt beauty and that low
uninterrupted tree line.
How much longer this will be the case, is most worrying and frightening to contemplate.
I am writing to support the letter from Glen Winney in regards to the Point Vernon Foreshore.
I wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments.
The Point Vernon foreshore, once a golden showcase of our beautiful region, has become unrecognisable due to overgrowth and neglect.
The lush grasses and well-
maintained parklands that once attracted families and visitors have been replaced by an overgrown, unkempt landscape.
This transformation is largely due to the overly green agenda pushed by previous councilors, who prioritised unchecked vegetation growth over maintaining a familyfriendly, accessible space.
While environmental stewardship is crucial, the lack of balance in this approach has come at the expense of the community’s enjoyment.
The foreshore no longer reflects the pristine beauty that once defined our region, and the needs of local families and visitors have been sidelined.
It’s time for a reassessment to restore the foreshore to its former glory—a vibrant, well-maintained space that celebrates both our natural environment and the community’s love for this cherished area.
I understand there have been hundreds of signatures on a petition to have the area looked again with a set of fresh eyes. I think that is a very important initiative.
Dear Editor,
I wish to share a happy experience I had recently.
While waiting in line at the supermarket, the young Mother in front of me realised she didn’t have enough money to pay for her purchases.
Another shopper, without hesitation, happily paid the difference.
All of us witnesses thanked her for her generosity.
As I left, I made the decision to “pay it forward” and went to the nearby cafe and paid for a coffee.
I left the centre feeling warm and fuzzy inside, knowing that a few people were feeling that the world can be a nice place.
David Lee, the LNP Candidate for Hervey Bay, is calling for an immediate reduction in the speed limit on Booral Road due to traffic safety concerns.
“The Ingenia Lifestyle Village on Booral Road, Urangan has a Fraser Coast Regional Council development condition to construct a pedestrian refuge
crossing on Booral Road,” said Mr Lee.
“It defies common sense that the Department of Transport and Main Roads would allow a pedestrian refuge crossing to be constructed in an 80 km speed zone.”
“Ingenia Lifestyle residents need to be able to conveniently access the nearby Airport doctor surgery and pharmacy, supermarket and retail shops. Some residents require mobility aids to traverse busy Booral Road such as motor scooters and wheelie walkers.”
“In recent months, Ingenia Village residents have expressed grave concerns to me about pedestrian safety on Booral Road.
In one case, an Ingenia resident was observed to be attempting to cross the busy road in a wheelie walker.”
Mr Lee said, “A reduction in the speed limit from 80 km/ hr to 60 km/hr in conjunction with the construction of a pedestrian refuge crossing is integral to the safety and wellbeing of Village residents.”

REGISTRATION forms are now available for the 2024 Mobility Scooter and Wheelchair Convoy as the Fraser Coast prepares to break records and have some fun reliving the 50’s.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said this year’s convoy, which will have a 1950s theme, is being planned for Saturday, September 14.
“We’re encouraging all participants to dress themselves and their vehicles from the 1950’s,” he said.
“Think Elvis Presley and Doris Day. Think full skirts, elegant gloves, wide-brimmed hats, big hair, red lipstick and thick eyeliner as we get ready to relive the 50’s.
“We hold the Australian record with 176 in the convoy, so this year we’re hoping to go one step further and break our own record.
“The number of motorised wheelchairs registered in the Fraser Coast has increased annually since 2020, reaching 3,326 in 2024/25.”
Cr Seymour said the convoy was about bringing together mobility scooter riders and wheelchair users to celebrate the independence these vehicles provide and to
increase awareness of how to use them safely.
“We want to promote a safe and welcoming environment for all mobility users, ensuring they can move around freely and confidently in our region,” he said.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls de Waard said the event was about promoting safety and having fun at the same time.
“We always see amazing displays of creativity, and it’s exciting to see how participants express themselves through their decorated vehicles and fun hats,” she said.
“Prizes are available for the Largest Group, Best Decorated Scooter and Best Decorated Individual.
“The convoy will leave Scarness Park and head down the Esplanade, past the playground and skate park before making its way back to Scarness Park for some live music with Fred Troughton and a free BBQ for participants.
“If you won’t be participating in the convoy, bring your family and friends to cheer on the riders from the sidelines.
Registrations only open from 8am on Saturday 14 September at Scarness Park across the road from the Beach House Hotel.
Interested participants seeking more information and community members willing to volunteer on the day can contact the Halcro Street Community Centre on 4194 2441.

FRASER Coast builders and construction workers wanting to learn more about preventing erosion and soil loss on worksites are encouraged to attend a free seminar and field day in Maryborough.
Cr Michelle Byrne said Council has teamed up with TOPO Group to provide the training at the Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park on Friday 27 September from 8am to 2pm.
“The Fraser Coast region is growing rapidly as more and more people realise this is a fantastic place to live, work and play,” she said.
• Top 20% of Real
“As our region grows, it is vital that our building industry is equipped with the knowledge and tools to protect our natural environment, and that’s what this free seminar and field day is all about.
“Sediment control aims to stop sand, soil, cement and
other building materials from reaching waterways. Effective erosion and sediment control measures are crucial in maintaining healthy waterways and ensuring sustainable development.
“By attending this seminar, builders and construction workers can learn more about their role in safeguarding our community’s environmental future while also improving their operational efficiency and ensuring they comply with environmental laws.”
Cr Byrne said the event would include a seminar on the importance of erosion and sediment control, followed by practical field demonstrations.
“There will also be stalls from suppliers of erosion and sediment control products and services,” she said.
“Effective erosion and sediment control has many benefits, including improving
wet weather working conditions and site access, and reduced stockpile losses. It also means fewer issues with mud and dust, which reduces cleanup costs and ultimately results in fewer public complaints.
“Council is committed to building better communities together, and initiatives like this free seminar and field day seek to achieve that.”
To register to attend this training on Friday 27 September, complete the registration form on the event website www.frasercoast. qld.gov.au/activities-events and email it to enquiry@ frasercoast.qld.gov.au by 13 September to assist with catering. Light refreshments and lunch will be provided on the day.
For more information, contact Council’s Development Compliance Section on 1300 79 49 29.
THE HERVEY Bay Library’s returns room has undergone a significant upgrade, making it easier for members to return library books and more efficient for staff to manage the process.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the new system can operate 24/7, allowing staff to spend more time assisting library members on the floor.
“The Hervey Bay Library currently receives over 800,000 returns annually and processes tens of thousands of returns and customer reservations for the Burrum Heads, Howard, Maryborough and Tiaro libraries,” he said.
“In addition, it also manages the cataloguing and distribution of new books for all our Fraser Coast libraries.
“This new system gives us the capability to process 1,800 returns per hour, around the clock if needed.
“This is state-of-theart technology that will automatically scan every item as it comes down the returns chute.
Cr Seymour said every item has a microchipped tag in it which will tell us what kind of item it is and what smart bin it needs to go into.
“Items then go along a conveyor belt system and are
automatically sorted into smart bins ready for shelving or relocation to another branch.
“This allows all items to be sorted by category, so all children’s books are placed in one bin while DVDs go into another, ready for shelving.
“Staff can remotely monitor and display the status of incoming books and bin capacity through a system that also allows for configuring email and phone alerts to notify when bins are getting full
“This automated sorting process also improves workplace health and safety for staff by reducing the need for manual handling and
minimizing the physical strain of bending down to sort books.
“Our new returns system is a game changer for the library team, streamlining operations and enhancing service, reflecting the Council’s commitment to supporting and valuing our libraries as vital community resources.
“This new system is also portable, allowing us to relocate it to the new library when the Hervey Bay Civic Centre is completed in mid2026.”
Library members can return books 24/7 via the return chutes outside the library’s main entrance.

FROM a passion project by a couple of Hervey Bay locals to Fraser Coast’s first Artisan Spirit Distillery, The Spirit Collective has had a remarkable journey since its launch four years ago.
Recently, this distillery clinched the coveted “World Championship of Rum” Trophy at the Australian International Rum Awards (AIRA).
The Spirit Collective impressed a panel of internationally recognised judges at the AIRA, a competition dedicated to rum and cane spirits from around the globe.
Competing against hundreds of distilleries, they won the top Trophy for Overproof Rum 50% ABV & Over with their Rum #1 – Old Grog.
Additionally, they secured a Gold Award for Aged Rum 2-4 years for Rum #1 – Old Grog Aged Rum 2-4 years.
Proud head distillers, Daniel Betts and Kane Macready, stated, “This award reinforces our belief that we have great local ingredients and a great
environment to help bring out the best in our Rum#1.”
The Wide Bay area has built a reputation as one of the premier rum-producing regions in Australia. These credentials were further cemented with The Spirit Collective’s recent achievements.
Martin Simons, General Manager of Fraser Coast Tourism & Events, commented, “The award is further recognition of the diversity and strength of our local economy and the growing reputation of local produce, regional wineries, and breweries.”
Mr Simons added, “With the success of events like Maryborough’s Relish Food & Wine Festival and the upcoming Fraser Coast Flavours in Hervey Bay, this award for The Spirit Collective not only benefits our local community but also highlights our region’s unique produce and offerings on national and international stages.”
Betts and Macready began
learning the craft a number of years ago and are continually refining their products to suit personal tastes.
Encouraged by friends and family, they turned their passion into a business that has proven to be on the up and up.
Mr Betts expressed pride in his team’s attention to detail in creating world class rum, looking forward to seeing how their rum ages in ex-Bourbon and ex-Cognac barrels imported from Europe and America.
“Previously, our Rum#1 received a Silver award in the 2023 rum awards, so it’s great to see our hard work and dedication paying off,” he said.
The Spirit Collective offers a range of products, including popular Gins (Origin and Raspberry), Vodka, Rums, and the unique Rocky Road liqueur.
Their products are available locally at venues and other hospitality venues across Queensland.

THE FRASER Coast has seen a lot of rain, and with the transition to warmer weather, we start to see the blooming flowers.
We are moving away from the season for common colds and influenza.
However, the ticklish cough, sneezing and runny nose has returned.
Many of us, spring heralds the onset of seasonal allergies.
Due to the increased rain this season, there is likely to be a surge in pollen levels, as trees, grasses, and flowers begin to bloom.
It is important to understand the causes and management strategies to navigate this allergy season.
People will often confuse allergies for a common cold or infection.
Common symptoms of allergies include sneezing, watery runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, and coughing.
Allergies tend to cause persistent itching, particularly in the eyes and throat, and symptoms may last for weeks or even months, if the allergen is present.
On the other hand, a cold
typically lasts for about a week or two and may be accompanied by a fever and body aches, which are uncommon in allergies.
Like all medical conditions, effective management requires a multi-pronged approach, and this includes combination of prevention and treatment strategies:
Try to stay indoors on days when pollen counts are high. Keep windows closed and use air conditioning to filter out allergens.
Wearing sunglasses outdoors can also help prevent pollen from irritating your eyes.
Regularly washing your hands and face, changing
clothes after being outside, and showering before bed can help remove pollen and reduce symptoms.
Your pharmacist initially can discuss over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroids which can help alleviate symptoms.
It is advisable to start taking these medications before exposure to the allergen, as they are more effective at preventing allergic reactions than treating them once they occur.
Nasal saline flushes can be beneficial at reducing the pollen and mucous from the nasal passages.
Antibiotics do not have a role in treatment of allergies. It is important for those with severe allergies or symptoms that are not improving with simple measures it would be prudent to have a discussion with your General Practitioner for an assessment, further investigations or other treatment options.
FRASER Coast residents
eager to learn more about the journey of their yellow recycling bin contents can sign up for a free tour of the region’s recycling centre in September.
Resource Recovery spokesperson Zane O’Keefe said about 8,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables from the kerbside collection of yellow-lid recycling bins were processed annually at the Materials Recovery Facility (Recycling Centre).
“The recycling centre tours will give residents a better understanding of what they can put in their recycling bin and where it ends up,” he said.
“The tours are always very popular, and this year we are running four tours during the September school holidays.
Residents will learn practical tips and tricks for making recycling easier at home and reducing contamination.
“Acceptable items for the yellow recycling bin include packaging, glass jars and bottles, paper/cardboard, hard plastics, steel and aluminium cans and containers. Items such as clothing, batteries and green waste are not suitable for recycling in these bins.
“Council’s website has an A—Z Recycling Guide with a comprehensive list of what goes where. Residents can also download the Recycle Mate app, which helps them recycle wherever they are in Australia.
“The top three recycling rules to remember are – never bag it, take the lids off jars and bottles, and rinse your containers.”
Bookings are essential
as places are limited, and attendees must wear closed-in shoes with access via stairs.
To reserve a spot, call Council on 1300 79 49 29. Tea, coffee and a light morning tea will be provided.

IN THE PAST year, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) (Queensland Section) aeromedical team helped more than a thousand sick or injured patients from the Fraser Coast region reach the care they needed.
Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC) has again done it’s bit to help provide services to the area by waiving over $122,000 in RFDS landing fees at the Maryborough and Hervey Bay airports.
This is a significant increase from last year when FCRC waived $66,000.
Demand for the RFDS across the Fraser Coast continues to grow with an 11% increase in services from the previous year.
More Fraser Coast residents
are using the vital lifesaving care of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) (Queensland Section) than ever before.
RFDS (Queensland Section)
CEO Meredith Staib said, the support of Fraser Coast Regional Council continues to be important in the service being able to help such a growing population.
“Fraser Coast Regional Council continues to be a great supporter of the work the RFDS does across the region, and we thank them for that.
“Partnerships with organisations such as FCRC are vital in helping the RFDS achieve its goal of assisting as many people in need as possible.
“We again thank the council for its ongoing support and
look forward continuing such a positive relationship for many years to come,” Ms Staib said.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Royal Flying Doctor Service offers an essential community service, and Council is proud to support the organisation by waiving airport fees through an ongoing sponsorship agreement.
“Our region is the second highest in patient transfers to Brisbane, highlighting how crucial the Royal Flying Doctor Service is for the Fraser Coast.
“Council’s vision is to build better communities together and that’s exactly what this sponsorship agreement with the RFDS achieves,” he said.

FRASER District is inviting the Fraser District community to join them on Tuesday, 10th September at The Brolga Theatre, Maryborough and Pier Park, Hervey Bay to observe World Suicide Prevention Day 2024.
The event is a way of uniting the local community to honour and remember the lives lost to suicide, as a personal tribute for a friend or family member, or to show support for Australians experiencing emotional distress or mental illness.
Sally Holstein, Fraser District Service Lead said Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows walks aim to bring suicide out of the shadows, acknowledging
those touched by suicide and highlighting the importance of human connection for people in their darkest hours.
“This year’s walk will once again provide a safe space for the community to gather and remember the individuals who have lost their lives to suicide and to support those affected by suicide,” Sally said.
Tragically, over 3,000 Australians lose their lives to suicide every year. These people are our family, friends and loved ones. Join us to walk to remember those we’ve lost to suicide, and raise funds to support our crisis support and suicide prevention services.”
You can phone Lifeline to
speak to a Crisis Supporter on 13 11 14, text 0477 131 114, chat to Lifeline online or access the Support Toolkit to self-manage what you’re going through at www.lifeline.org.au (all services are available 24/7).
For over 60 years, Lifeline has been connecting with Australians in need through crisis support and suicide prevention services.
The organisation expects to respond to over one million requests for support this year, creating an average of 120 safety plans to keep a person experiencing suicidal ideation safe every day.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is on the hunt for hidden talent to join in the fun at this year’s Seniors Talent Quest at the Hervey Bay RSL Club on Sunday October 27.
Seniors Liaison Officer Juls De Waard is encouraging anyone over 50 with a talent to enter this year’s Senior Talent Quest, as a grand finale to Senior’s Month activities.
“The event promises to be a spectacular showcase of senior talent. Whether you’re a singer, musician or dancer, there are six categories to choose from, offering something for everyone,” she said.
Last year’s ‘Best Group Act’ winner, the Hervey Bay Inspirations Singing Group, is already hard at work rehearsing their performance for this year’s show.
Sylvia Friend, who has been with the Inspirations for eight years, said the group is thrilled
to return to the stage with the talent quest a highlight of the year.
“The more people who enter the show the better,” she said.
“Whether you are performing or simply coming along to watch the show, you are guaranteed a great afternoon with lots of laughs and some seriously good singers!”
Ms De Waard said the Talent Quest is planned for Sunday, 27 October, at the Hervey Bay RSL Club and will follow the format of TV shows like Australia’s Got Talent, with a panel of judges awarding prizes in each category.
“The entry fee for competitors is $5 and tickets to attend the event are $5 which includes afternoon tea and can be pre-purchased from the Halcro Street Community Centre at 30 Halcro Street, Pialba. Doors will open at 3pm on the day for a 3.30pm start.
“The Seniors Talent Quest is one of many events which will take place during Seniors Month throughout October.
“It’s all about bringing people together, uniting them through shared interests and promoting positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing.”
Seniors Month programs will soon be available online via Council’s website, or hard copies will be distributed to Council’s Customer Service Centres, Libraries, and Local Seniors Services. frasercoast. qld.gov.au/seniors.

LESLIE Raveneau, affectionately known as Les, was born in 1967 in the small town of Moree, New South Wales, nestled on the banks of the Mehi River.
Les has an identical twin brother named Percy, and the bond between the two is palpable. Les is older by five minutes.
Their mother, unaware she was expecting twins, was shocked when Percy arrived as she was wheeled back to the ward.
Les has six siblings—two older brothers and three sisters on his mother’s side, and stepsiblings on his father’s side.
The connection between all the siblings is strong, especially after their mother passed away from cancer seven years ago.
She was the family’s rock, and her loss was felt profoundly.
His mother, a single parent from when the children were very young, worked tirelessly to provide for her family, always putting her children first.
“Mum always told us to be ourselves and to be kind to others, no matter what,” Les recalls. This wisdom has guided him throughout his life.
In his later years, Les developed a close relationship with his biological father, a taxi driver in Moree.
Les and his twin often rode in his father’s cab, not realising he was their dad.
The twins thought they were on a good wicket as the driver never charged them. One day Les told his mum about it, and she revealed the truth.
After that the brothers grew closer to their father, maintaining a strong
bond until his passing four years ago.
Les attended Moree East School before being sent to a private boarding school in Orange, New South Wales, at age thirteen, along with his twin brother.
Initially homesick, they soon adapted and embraced their new environment.
The brothers were thrilled when they saw snow for the first time, Les recalls with laughter, “When we both saw the snow, we got excited and ran off.
The staff finally found us on the main oval, lying in the snow making snow angels and having the time of our lives.”
Sports have played a significant role in Les’s school life. At just fourteen, he and his brother were selected for their school’s First Eleven cricket team, a proud
achievement for them both.
Les still enjoys sports and was recently selected for the Queensland cricket team again.
A little-known fact is that Les and Percy were also tennis coaches in Sydney for many years.
During his school days, Les even had the chance to play tennis with Todd Woodbridge.
In 1996 Les moved to Hervey Bay with his wife where his three children—Jaimi, 27, Sam, 25, and Hallie, 23 were born.
Les and his former wife have remained good friends.
As a proud member of the Gamilaroi tribe, one of Australia’s largest Indigenous nations, Les cherishes his heritage and has ensured his kids also have a strong connection to their roots.

Lending policy refers to the set of guidelines, rules, and criteria that a financial institution or lender follows when determining whether to approve a loan to a borrower.
Today’s policy: Debt Consolidation
If you’re overwhelmed by managing multiple debt repayments, even just 2 or 3, consolidating them through a personal loan or by refinancing your home loan can simplify your finances and lower your overall costs. This approach can also boost your credit score quickly. You don’t need to own property to benefit from consolidation, and it can be an effective strategy to reduce your debt more rapidly.
