We moved here some years ago to get away from the rat race..

In such towns schools host educational classes at night for a fee covering any topic that people feel a need to learn and get enough interest in usually around a dozen or so students .. they usually are for 6 to 8 weeks duration … some have part 1 part 2 etc.

Do any schools do this here?

If not why not …

I’d love a class in the stock exchange.

With an aging population

RECENTLY, I extended an offer to a councillor to feature an editorial piece in our newspaper, providing coverage for a motion they had submitted to the Council. This is a service I have extended to numerous councillors on many occasions.

To be clear, the offer was for editorial news coverage.

Given that our newspaper reaches 55,000 readers per issue, including over 5,000 in this councillor’s division, I was surprised by their response and the level of misunderstanding from an individual in such a leadership position. The councillor replied by stating they had ‘little faith in my editorial credibility and ability to cover any issue in a balanced way’.

One might equally hypothesize that such a response demonstrates a lack of political astuteness, to the detriment of the councillor’s constituents. I often receive negative feedback on social

of people with time on their hands it would be great to attend such activities .. and there would be enough people around to take such classes as teachers as well as those who want to learn different skills …

Dear Ed,

It’s that time of year again where those of us with Asthmatic and respiratory conditions are put through hell when cane burning season arrives without warning.

The other night I woke up struggling for breath and required medical intervention.

Is it too much to ask for our local cane farmers to give us warning when they set the world on fire so we can prepare and hopefully survive the night?

Glen Winney in his Property Talk (19/9/’24), is partially correct; high rise living would reduce the urban sprawl, but at what cost?

YES, it will reduce the need for more infrastructure, while at the same time, it will increase the need to upgrade

media regarding Publishers Point and perceived imbalances. It seems necessary to clarify a fundamental distinction in journalism: an editorial opinion piece and balanced news coverage serve different purposes and follow distinct journalistic standards.

An editorial opinion piece, such as Publishers Point, is intended to express the personal views of the writer. It is inherently subjective and is designed to provoke thought, debate, and critical reflection. This practice is common across all newspapers and online platforms in this country. The aim is to present a personal perspective, not to provide an impartial account of events.

Balanced news coverage, on the other hand, strives for objectivity and impartiality. It is committed to offering a full, unbiased view of events, incorporating all relevant perspectives, with careful research and fact-checking. Balanced

existing Infrastructure! Personalised transport (car) may be reduced but public transport and the inconvenience that goes with it will have to increase, as may the cost.

Now to the big one, recent events have shown close proximity living increases the risk of catching transmittable disease, this is not new, more people died of the plague in cities, than they did back of Burke.

All forms of undesirable human traits increase with close proximity living.

Now ask yourself the question, why did you choose

journalism avoids taking sides, instead delivering facts and allowing readers to form their own informed opinions.

Over the past four years, I have interviewed countless individuals and written hundreds of news stories for the Hervey Bay Advertiser, often covering views that I do not personally share. This is the essence of news reporting, which is distinct from editorial commentary. It would benefit certain public figures to understand this distinction before raising unnecessary concerns. Readers are always welcome to disagree with the opinions expressed in Publishers Point. In fact, that is its very purpose. For those who hold differing views, we encourage them to submit a Letter to the Editor, allowing for a respectful exchange of opinions.

I trust this clarifies the matter.

Can you please give the Hervey Bay public a history lesson re Sue Brooks.

She was against our main shopping center development, against the esplanade clean from absolutely disgusting to what we have today.

Against the sports precinct, this isn’t a high-rise, it isn’t units it’s the Sheraton.

I for one don’t want to live in Sue Brooks’ version of Hervey Bay and hope they don’t

pack and leave probably to Bundaberg.

I’ve been here for 30 years and absolutely prefer it the way it is today, medical services, Bunnings, BCF, Supercheap, University, increased airport, Big W and Kmart.

We need a town with a future where families and especially the young can also see prospects.

If David Lewis can’t use

to live in Hervy Bay?

his legal expertise, legal arguments and funds to appeal the Council decision regarding the Torquay Towers - then let it go! $11,000 is insufficient funds to pay for legal counsel and mount a legal challenge.

In the best interest of ratepayers, David Lewis and Sue Brooks would be best advised to door knock residents for support and to assist them sign the ePetition or hard copy option.

10,000 signatures are needed by November.

There is sufficient time to achieve this outcome by closure date of 20/11/24.

This petition can then be presented to the new housing minister, following the October State election, to amend it to comply with the FCRC Planning Scheme.

I refer to Glen Winney’s article on 19th September, and commend Glen for raising this question.

I have lived most of my life in Hervey Bay and have witnessed the growth that has taken place.

But I am concerned for the future of our beautiful home.

The spread of development at ground level into adjoining lands is going to create a lot of problems in the future,

traffic, services such as water etc.

It is going to cost ratepayers in years to come.

Sure, developers are contributing now but what about 10 years from now, who is going to pay the bill.

How many Boundary Road type of roads will need to be built for traffic to be able to flow safely and quickly.

Who will pay for them?

There has been a lot of comment about high rise buildings, I consider that there should be a balance between high rise and ground level development, at present it is skewed towards ground level development.

One other thing that should be taken into consideration is how we make Hervey Bay attractive to the 18 to 30 year olds, to keep them here, ground level development and the building of over 50’s complexes is not going to do that.

The proposed Sheraton resort could well be a step in the right direction with the reported activities that it will include.

The Hervey Bay that we knew 30 years ago is no more, we cannot nor should we try to turn the clock back.

Surely, we should embrace the future for the sake of those that will come to live here after we are gone.

We have the opportunity to see that Hervey Bay grows into a desirable place to live well into the future.

Not let the old saying “a place for newlyweds and nearly dead’s” continue to apply to our beautiful home.

MORE than 180 Fraser Coast residents have become Australian citizens at special ceremonies at Maryborough City Hall as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said this year marked the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship, with these ceremonies being one of hundreds held across the country, welcoming thousands of new citizens nationwide.

“Our 187 new citizens on the Fraser Coast range in age from two to 92 and were born in 33 different countries. About a third – 62 people – are New Zealand-born,” he said.

“Australian Citizenship

Day is an opportunity for all Australians, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on and celebrate what’s great about being Australian.

“Australian citizenship is a shared identity – a common bond which unites all Australians while celebrating our diversity.

“For those taking the pledge, it’s an unforgettable moment of commitment, signalling the start of an exciting new chapter. For those of us welcoming them, it’s a privilege to share in their journey and celebrate this milestone as they join our community.

“I encourage everyone across the Fraser Coast to

take a moment to reflect on and affirm their Australian citizenship as we warmly welcome our newest citizens.”

The Mayor was joined at the ceremonies by fellow Fraser Coast Regional Councillors, Fraser Coast Young Citizen of the Year George Rowland and Reese Griffiths from Riverside Christian College, who led the national anthem and performed “I Still Call Australia Home”.

FRASER Coast Regional Council has taken to the skies to manage an invasive weed in a waterway in Eli Waters, with a drone used for the first time to make the process more efficient and eco-friendly.

Cr Lachlan Cosgrove said a local contractor had successfully completed Salvinia weed spraying of the Endeavour Way waterway in Eli Waters, covering an area of 4.06 hectares.

“Salvinia molesta is an invasive aquatic fern that forms dense mats on water surfaces, disrupting ecosystems and water flow,” he said.

“Previous treatment has been sprayed from a boat which took Council workers over 40 hours and used around 130 litres of herbicide.

“This year, we used a drone for the spraying, which took just three hours and required only 36 litres of herbicide.”

Cr Cosgrove said this approach was more efficient, eliminated chemical exposure risks to staff, and was more environmentally friendly.

“The control of Salvinia molesta is a high priority for Council as identified in our Biosecurity Plan,” he said.

“As part of our control program, Council will also introduce Salvinia weevils in

Eli Waters and other areas around Hervey Bay and Maryborough to assist in managing the weed alongside spraying efforts.

“The Salvinia weevil is a small beetle that feeds on the invasive aquatic fern, helping to control its spread by damaging the plant’s structure and reducing its growth.

“Council has secured a Biosecurity Queensland grant to establish a Salvinia weevil breeding facility, which includes four poly-tanks set up at the Oakhurst depot for growing Salvinia.

“In October, we will introduce

THE URANGAN Wellness Centre is proud to be partnering with Red Nose Australia for the Fraser Coast Walk to Remember. This heartfelt community event, taking place on Saturday October 12th from 9.30am to 12pm, marks the beginning of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

Pregnancy and infant loss is an unimaginable journey, one that affects countless families every year. The Fraser Coast Walk to Remember offers a safe and compassionate space for bereaved parents, grandparents, siblings, and supportive friends to come together and honor the babies who reside forever in their hearts but not in their arms.

Being held at the Urangan Wellness Centre on October

12th, the event will feature a commemorative service to celebrate the lives of precious babies who were taken too soon, followed by a casual and symbolic walk and finishing with light refreshments provided to participants.

Tragedies like pregnancy and infant loss often become silenced, and the Fraser Coast Walk to Remember aims to change that. By coming together, families can not only honor the memory of their precious little ones but also create a supportive network for those who continue to navigate the challenging path of grief.

All those that feel that would find value in this important event are invited to join and become part of a community who understands. To register visit www.

FRASER Coast residents are encouraged to clear out and cash in on the Garage Sale Trail this November – the nation’s biggest second-hand treasure hunt.

Mayor George Seymour said Fraser Coast Regional Council was proud to be one of the more than 80 Councils across Australia supporting the campaign this year, which aims to encourage people to learn about the circular economy and the benefits of reuse.

“The trail will be coming to the Fraser Coast over two big weekends on the 9 and 16 November, with the event offering savings for savvy shoppers on everything from the essentials you need to the pre-loved gems you want,” he said.

“Local residents, schools, and community groups are invited to host their own garage sale or join a group sale, and you can take part over one day or do more across both weekends.

“For more information and to register your sale for free, go to www.garagesaletrail.com. au/sale/nikenbah-reuse-andrecycle-tip-shop

“Council will be partnering with Reuse & Recycle Group Inc to host group sales at our tip shop in Hervey Bay on

the two Saturdays 9 and 16 November.

“Residents who would like to take part in the Garage Sale Trail but don’t have the space themselves or don’t want to do a sale at their home can register their interest to join the tip shop group sales.

Cr Seymour said selling or shopping at garage sales is a fun and simple way to reduce our carbon footprint and an example of the circular economy in action.

“The Garage Sale Trail helps neighbours connect, make some money and keep their good stuff out of landfill,” he said.

“Up to three million items

are expected to be up for grabs across Australia over the trail weekends, with thrifty shoppers saving up to 43% buying second-hand. There will be something for everyone: fashion, furniture, cookware, kids stuff, tools and more.”

Garage Sale Trail is not-forprofit social enterprise that seeks to educate Australians on the importance of reuse and the need to take individual responsibility for the impact of our consumption habits. It started as a grassroots idea in Bondi Beach in 2010 and has grown to become a nationwide initiative in 2024, powered by over 80 Councils.

YOUR LOCAL TREATMENT PLANT SPECIALISTS

While not as exciting as picking out paint colours/carpet/fxtures etc

– your wastewater system is an important and vital aspect of your new home.

Australia’s land management has progressively been adapting to our environment as our understanding of it increases and we recognize the need to better manage our natural resources and what we take from and return to them.

Increasingly, wastewater, stormwater and rainwater are being seen as recyclable resources rather than as disposal problems.

Recycled water use can reduce demand for potable water; thus it can make a potential contribution to easing the water crisis in Australia. CWWS are encouraging the shift towards a more sustainable future through the installation of home wastewater treatment systems & rainwater tanks.

plants in the greater Wide Bay for more than 15 years.

We service and maintain over 1500 systems in the Wide Bay each year as well as undertake more than 200 new installs each year. Our commercial sewerage treatment works have taken us across Qld from Bowen down to the NSW border.

All of our service technicians have completed the onsite sewerage facility endorsement as a part of their plumbing license. Additionally undertaking further manufacturer specifc training courses with Taylex, Ozzikleen and Fujiclean.

These Advanced Secondary Systems use a natural process to turn wastewater into clean, safe water that can be recycled on-site, ensuring that our clients’ needs are met today, without compromising the needs of future generations.

Things to consider include the location of the treatment tank and disposal area (especially if you plan on adding a shed/ pool/driveway etc later on), the service requirements and energy consumption and most importantly the reliability of the system and the warranty provided.

TWO fig trees on the Hervey Bay Esplanade near the WetSide Water Park will be removed, and maintenance will be carried out on seven others to ensure community safety.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Open Space and Environment Executive Manager Max Corte said the Weeping Figs had been part of the Pialba foreshore since the 1930s, but unfortunately, their health had significantly worsened over time.

“Council arborists have been aware of the trees’ declining conditions through routine maintenance inspections and have done extensive work to

extend their lifespan to this point,” he said.

“Council also sought advice from two independent arborists who confirmed the findings and recommended action.

“Two of the nine trees must be removed entirely, while the others will undergo ongoing inspections and varying levels of pruning to reduce weight.

“In addition, Council will conduct remedial work to improve soil health and support the trees’ root systems.

“We understand these trees have historical significance and are much loved by the community, but public safety must come first. This decision

wasn’t made lightly, and we are taking this action only because it is absolutely necessary.

“Replacement planting is already underway, and cuttings will be taken from the trees to help preserve them through replanting.”

Mr Corte said the removal and maintenance work would occur over two days in midOctober, during which there will be some road closures and pedestrian restrictions.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as this essential work is carried out,” he said.

ST STEPHEN’S Hospital in Hervey Bay reached a significant milestone in July with the first total ankle replacement surgeries performed in the Wide Bay region.

The hospital’s expansion into this orthopaedic procedure offers a crucial treatment option for residents suffering from severe ankle pain, eliminating the need to travel for care.

St Stephen’s Hospital orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Navi Bali, said like hips and knees, total ankle replacement procedures are becoming more common thanks to advances in technology and surgical techniques.

“Ankle technology and reliability of the prosthesis has improved significantly in the past ten years, as have orthopaedic surgical techniques, so we’re now seeing ankle replacement procedures becoming more common,” Dr Bali said.

“This includes using unique 3D models created in the United States for each patient as well as x-ray during the procedure to guide placement of the new ankle joint which is critical for patient outcomes and for the longevity of the implant.”

For patients, the surgery

means having access to an additional treatment option for ankle pain and stiffness, often caused by a past break or arthritis, when other techniques have been unsuccessful.

“Patients will often come to see me with ankle pain which is impacting their quality of life and reducing their ability to walk long distances. They might also be experiencing significant pain at rest,” Dr Bali explained.

“As with everything in medicine, treatment is tailored to the individual patient and it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. It’s great to be able to have this procedure in our tool kit to offer to patients when it can really benefit them,” he said.

St Stephen’s Hospital

General Manager, Peter Wood, said it was pleasing to see patients already benefiting from the new procedure.

“This is another great milestone for St Stephen’s and more importantly for our community and those we care for,” Peter said.

“Our focus is firmly on making great care available close to home for our community, and the introduction of total ankle replacement procedures is an example of how we are continually expanding our services to meet the evolving needs of patients.”

Patients are encouraged to speak to their GP about a referral to St Stephen’s Hospital.

A COLOURFUL reimagining of south-east Queensland suburban life, an exploration of sustainable timber

exhibitions opening at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Arts spokesperson Michelle Govers said Brisbane artist Phoebe Paradise is known for her vibrant illustrations, murals and public art installations, with her new exhibition examining the often overlooked charm of suburban life.

“Burbs to the Bay reimagines south-east Queensland suburbia with vibrant streetscapes and surreal architecture, bringing the essence of subtropical Queensland to life in a colourful, dreamlike world,” Cr

Govers said.

“The exhibition evokes the endless summer heat and chirping cicadas, creating a feeling of both wonder and unease.”

Cr Govers said Phoebe recently collaborated with local artists Matthew Graveson and Halle Bryant on a stunning 10-metre mural in the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery foyer as part of a mentorship program supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund.

Opening alongside Burbs to the Bay is Forest to Fibre – an exhibition highlighting cutting-edge research in sustainable timber processing and design, alongside local stores, artworks and histories.

Additionally, the inaugural Regional Spotlight exhibition will

showcase artistic talent from across the Wide Bay Burnett region through painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and more.

Featured artists include Vanessa Allega, Avi Amesbury, Adam Anderson, Susan Zela Bissett, Kerri Dixon, Seinileva Huakau, Julie McGillivray, Monique Mennie, Donna Norwood and Jacinta Padgett.

All three exhibitions will run until 17 November 2024. For more details, visit https://hbrg.com.au/ The gallery is located at 166 Old Maryborough Road in Pialba, and is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, and weekends from 10am to 2pm.

ON THE Fraser Coast, I have previously commented on the increasing numbers of patients with heart disease, strokes and dementia. Is there an evidence-based diet to prevent these from occurring? I have spoken to many cardiologists and neurologists whom promote the Mediterrranean diet.

The Mediterranean diet is one the diets that has numerous health benefits, supported by a growing body of scientific evidence. The traditional dietary patterns of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, such as Greece, Italy, and Spain, this diet emphasises whole, minimally processed foods, making it rich in nutrients and antioxidants.

These provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre, contributing to better overall health.

Foods like oats, barley, and whole wheat are high in fibre, promoting digestive health and helping regulate blood sugar levels.

Olive oil, a staple of the Mediterranean diet, is a key source of

monounsaturated fats, which improve heart health. Nuts, seeds, and fatty fish, like salmon and sardines provide omega-3 fatty acids, known for reducing inflammation.

The diet favours fish, poultry, and legumes over red meat, contributing to lower saturated fat intake.

Instead of relying on salt, the Mediterranean diet encourages the use of herbs and spices like oregano, garlic, and basil for flavour, further reducing sodium intake.

Numerous studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. Studies found that individuals following this

diet had a 30% lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular-related death compared to those on a low-fat diet.

The diet’s emphasis on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats helps improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Research suggests that the Mediterranean diet may reduce the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. The inclusion of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants is thought to protect brain health and slow aging.

The Mediterranean diet appears to be a “no brainer” and is widely recommended for improving overall health, reducing disease risk, and promoting longevity. Its flexibility, variety, and focus on nutrient-dense foods make it both sustainable and enjoyable.

A TALENT quest, mystery bus trips, a mini-Olympics, garden walks, a lifestyle expo, Mayoral morning teas and a pre-loved fashion parade are among the almost 50 events planned for Seniors Month on the Fraser Coast this October.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Senior Liaison Officer Juls De Waard said this year’s Seniors Month promises to be bigger and better than ever, with local senior services joining with Council and MADCOTA to organise a range of fun and informative activities.

“Seniors Month brings together people of all cultures and abilities to celebrate the vital contributions older adults make to our community,” she said.

“It’s also a fantastic chance for residents to explore new programs and activities and connect with support services on the Fraser Coast.

“There is something for everyone with open days, concerts, mystery bus trips, garden walks, a miniOlympics, a Seniors Ball, games days, book clubs, a preloved fashion parade, scam bingo and more.

“Seniors Month kicks off on Tuesday 1 October with an information session at the Hervey Bay Regional Library about accessing the My Aged Care System.

“One of the calendar highlights is the Over 50’s

Lifestyle Expo on Friday 4 October from 9am to 2pm at the Hervey Bay Baptist Church, which this year celebrates 21 years since it first began.

“There will be up to 80 exhibitors showcasing accommodation, travel, care, medical, legal, mobility and technology services and products, with entry to the expo just $2.

“There is a Mayor’s Picnic on Tuesday 8 October from 11am to 1pm at the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum where you can enjoy a free sausage sizzle and cuppa while enjoying some entertainment from ‘Believe it or Not’.

“In Maryborough, the Mayoral Heritage Morning Tea is at the Brolga Theatre on Tuesday 15 October from 10am, while other heritage city highlights include a Senior Services Expo, a spring concert and a ballroom dance, all at the MADCOTA Community Hub.

“We’ve saved one of the best for last with the muchloved Seniors Talent Quest on Sunday 27 October from 3pm to 6pm at the Hervey Bay RSL. Door entry is $5 and entry for contestants is $5.

“If you’ve got a hidden talent, then you’re encouraged to enter into one of the five categories, which include Best Overall, Best Group, Best Musical, Best Unusual

and the Bob Campbell Encouragement Award.”

Ms De Waard said the jam-packed month of events was a great opportunity for anyone over 50 to meet new people and engage with the community.

“Isolation and loneliness are huge issues, so I am hoping that during October, these events will encourage people to get out of the house to celebrate and connect with others,” she said.

Liven Communities has chosen Hervey Bay as the location for its first project, with the goal of providing luxury homes tailored to the needs of retirees and those nearing retirement age.

The development, known as Liven Beach Road, will feature high-end amenities and custom-designed homes, appealing to those seeking a blend of comfort, convenience, and community in their later years.

Located at 115 Beach Road in Urraween, the development will

feature 132 luxury homes starting at $550,000.

It is positioned just 300 metres from Stockland Hervey Bay Shopping Centre, giving residents easy access to shopping, dining, and essential services such as healthcare.

The location has been carefully chosen to ensure that residents can maintain a high quality of life with minimal travel required for day-today needs.

The homes themselves will be available in four custom designs, catering to different preferences and requirements.

Each home will feature modern kitchens, spacious open-plan living areas, alfresco dining spaces, and

double garages.

These homes are designed to provide maximum comfort and functionality, with an emphasis on single-level living, making them particularly well-suited to retirees who wish to age in place.

In addition to the luxury homes, Liven Beach Road will offer a wide range of resort-style amenities, designed to promote wellness and community engagement.

Residents will have access to pickleball and tennis courts, a swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, a spa, a cinema, and various social spaces.

The development also features an on-site wellness centre, where

vibrant and active lifestyle for residents, helping them stay physically fit and socially connected. The project will operate under a land lease model, which offers several financial benefits. Unlike traditional retirement villages, there are no entry or exit fees, and homeowners retain any capital gains when they choose to sell.

THE HERVEY Bay Aquatic Centre’s 25-metre pool will welcome swimmers once again in mid-October, following extensive upgrades including a new enclosure and flooring.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour and Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari visited the centre today to inspect progress on the stage 1A upgrade, which began in March this year.

Cr Seymour said the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre had been a community cornerstone since it opened in 1988.

“The aquatic centre is a popular place for locals and visitors to relax, exercise and socialise, with these upgrades designed to meet the community’s needs well into the future.,” he said.

“The enclosure and flooring work is almost finished, with the 25-metre pool set to reopen on Monday, 14 October. All stage 1A works are due to be finished by November.

“The upgrades are focused on improving the aquatic centre's safety and reliability, ensuring it meets modern standards.”

Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the Miles

Government invested more than $3.5 million towards the $4.1 million project through its Local Government Grants and Subsidies program.

“I’m delighted that stage 1A of the project will be ready in time for the community and visitors alike to enjoy as summer approaches,” Mr Tantari said.

“Substantially funded by the Queensland Government, the pool upgrade is a great example of the benefits of our Local Government Grants and Subsidies program which provides better facilities for communities to enjoy while also giving employment opportunities to locals.”

Cr Seymour said tenders for stage 1B of the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre upgrade would be called shortly, with work expected to begin in early 2025 and wrap up by mid to late 2025.

“The next stage will bring exciting new features,

including an interactive splashpad in the toddler pool, new shade structures and floodlights for the 50-metre pool,” he said.

“We’ll also be widening the concourse, upgrading the pipework and installing a new activity tower and wet play equipment.

“The Aquatic Centre team will work to minimise the impact on the public and ensure the 50-metre pool can stay open as much as possible during the next stage of work.

“The lagoon pool will remain closed until the completion of the stage 1B upgrades, and we thank the community for their continued patience while this work is carried out.

“Council is committed to effectively managing and maintaining our assets and planning for the future, and that’s what this project is all about.”

LOCAL Hervey Bay mum, Casey Walters, recently showcased her skills in the QLD Welterweight boxing division on the Gold Coast.

With over a decade of experience under her belt, Casey not only trains herself but has also designed her own boxing program.

“The Welterweight division is known for its explosive power, and this fight was no exception,” Casey said.

Facing off against a taller opponent, Stacia Waimarie, Casey quickly closed the gap, delivering a swift combination of strikes.

“As Waimarie tied up my hands, I broke free just enough to land some clean right hooks. She fought back hard with body shots.”

“She’s a tough opponent, and I could feel the intensity building. I thought I had the upper hand, but she unleashed a flurry of punches, forcing me to defend.”

Though Casey fought back with heavy hooks, Waimarie’s relentless attack left her without an opening to retaliate. The referee stepped in as Waimarie gained momentum, stopping the match in the first round.

Despite this being Casey’s first career loss by a stoppage, she walked away proud, with no regrets.

“It was my first fight at 65kg, and while I wasn’t hurt, I misjudged the pace. I thought she’d tire, but I waited too long, and it cost me the fight.”

“I’m still proud of how I performed. Stacia’s strong amateur background showed, but I held my own. Now I’m back in the gym, chasing the

QLD Pro Title at 65kg.”

What made this fight even more special for Casey was having her son, Aiden, and brother, Lyle Long, in her corner.

“My son has been part of my journey since he was five. This time, he stood proudly as my corner man, learning from the judges and officials.”

“Win or lose, I’m still feeding the beast inside me. I was born for this.”

AUCTION TIME AND PLACE;

MUSIC, memories, and lots of change have shaped Darren Marlow’s life. Like all of us, he has had his highs and lows too.

Darren was only eight years old when his family relocated to Hervey Bay from Melbourne in 1973.

Hervey Bay was much quieter back then, with only about two thousand people and none of today’s suburban sprawl.

“There was hardly anything here,” Darren recalls. Though he’s left a few times, the city’s rapid growth hasn’t stopped Hervey Bay from always drawing him back.

As the second oldest of four siblings, sadly one of his brothers has since passed away, Darren remembers growing up in a Queenslander on the Esplanade in Torquay, across from today’s Ernie Organ Park.

He spent mornings at the beach, calling it “paradise.” A footy fan, he switched to soccer since there was no local footy club here at the time. His love for music began around age 12 or 13.

Darren’s father was a great accordion and guitar player, while his grandmother on his father’s side was a gifted singer and musician, playing both the accordion and piano.

“My musicality definitely comes from my dad’s side,” Darren says.

Darren’s early musical influences came from his dad, with tunes from Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley.

His taste expanded when his mom brought home Explosive Hits 71, featuring songs like “Little Queenie” and “Hot Love” This was Darren’s first exposure to popular music, sparking his growing passion.

By 1975, Countdown fueled Darren’s love for rock bands like AC/ DC, Skyhooks, Hush and TMG. His friend Glenn Thompson introduced him to electric guitars and drum kits, igniting the spark.

“I was fascinated by how the sound came out of this little box,” Darren laughs. His first electric guitar, bought for fifty dollars by his mother, became his prized possession, and he was hooked from then on.

Though Darren has been performing professionally since 1995, his experience spans decades before that, playing in local and Melbourne-based bands.

His band from the 80s, SSD, even released an album on Spotify last year, titled SSD Resurrected and another album was released this year. Currently, Darren is the co-singer

of Red Betty, plays bass for Dogwood Crossing, performs in a duo with Tim Earle, and also works as a solo artist.

After years of being a “road warrior,” he now prefers to stay local.

One of the highlights of Darren’s career was playing at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2014 with the band Kings of the Sun.

“It was the highest point of my musical career,” he says. “Not many people get the chance to do that.”

Despite the challenges of being a full-time musician, Darren wouldn’t trade it for anything.

“I’m never going to be rich,” he jokes, “but music has been my sole income since 1995.”

The pandemic made things tough, and like many musicians, Darren had to pivot. He worked as a deckhand on a crabbing boat which he still does

from time to time.

When asked what advice he has for aspiring musicians, Darren says, “Stick at it and don’t ever give up.”

He takes pride in encouraging young local talent like solo artist Franky Busta and Darcy from the band

Unbleached, whose enthusiasm and passion for music shines through.

Darren also has a 24-year-old daughter, Paris, who calls Hervey Bay home too. He enjoys spending time with her and looks forward to those times.

Now at the age of 59 and reflecting on his life and career, Darren’s philosophy is simple, and borrowed from the band Spinal Tap: “Have a good time all the time.”

It’s a fitting motto for a man who has spent a lifetime sharing his love of music with others.
