Hervey Bay calls itself a tourist town.
At best it is a brief stopover point for tourists to access the unique world heritage sites of Lady Elliot Island and Fraser Island.
Perhaps, take a whale watching trip.
However, there are many whale watching opportunities up and down the east and west coasts of Australia.
Tourists come to the coast to see sand and water -
IN HERVEY Bay, our volunteers truly are the unsung heroes, quietly shaping our community into a better, kinder place to live.
These selfless individuals dedicate their time, skills, and energy to causes they’re passionate about, whether in sports, health, business, social work, or countless other areas.
Please tag and recognise as many of the volunteers you know on our social media, because they deserve to be celebrated.
Their dedication forms the backbone of our community, and it’s time we celebrate them with the recognition they so richly deserve.
Our volunteers do so much more than just lend a helping hand—they educate, they care, and they advocate.
They invest hours, often sacrificing personal
the only natural tourist attraction in Hervey Bay.
It is a shame the Council, or individuals within Council, seem intent on obscuring all such views that could be visible from the entire length of the esplanade and the walking/ bike track.
The tourist drive does not end at Beach Road ...
The walking/bike track does not end at Beach Road
The esplanade does not end at Beach Road ...
The bay does not end at Beach Road ...
And tourist accommodation does not end at Beach Road...
However, Council has mostly neglected parks, gardens and foreshore reserves north of this arbitrary point and failed to invest in appropriate maintenance.
This lack of investment and foresight has seen the parks, gardens and reserves infected with weeds, pests, declared pests and nonendemic/non indigenous flora to be planted or allowed to proliferate unabated.
time, to create a lasting positive impact.
Volunteering is the powerhouse of our community because it fosters connection, builds trust, and strengthens relationships. They create a vibrant, inclusive environment where everyone thrives, making Hervey Bay a better place for all.
Whether it’s coaching at the local sports club, assisting in healthcare, mentoring young people, supporting families in need, or organising community events, their contributions help to strengthen Hervey Bay’s unique community spirit.
Volunteering doesn’t only benefit the people they serve; it creates ‘social capital’.
This is the value that comes from the trust, connections, and mutual respect within a community.
Through their work, volunteers help foster a deep sense of togetherness and a shared
This has resulted in natural resource degradation, damage to remnant flora, compromised biodiversity and a negative effect on the health and recreation activities of the residents and tourists.
Tourists are faced with visual pollutionoverplanted, overgrown vistas hiding the natural bay and its delights, long grass up to armpits, tree killing signs, ad hoc and ineffective mowing practices and a walk/bike track in need of attention.

commitment to our community’s values. It’s through these connections that our community becomes resilient, vibrant, and a place where everyone feels they belong.
In giving of themselves, volunteers also gain. They build lasting relationships, learn from the people they work alongside, and experience the rewarding feeling of knowing they’ve made a difference.
They inspire us, and they remind us of the importance of showing up for one another.
To all our Hervey Bay volunteers, thank you. You bring strength, compassion, and joy to our community, and we are deeply grateful for all that you do.
Your work doesn’t go unnoticed, and we’re so proud to have you as part of Hervey Bay’s heart.
make it attractive to tourists.
Instead of ad hoc and individual decision making, the council needs to develop a comprehensive management plan in consultation with a broad cross section of independent experts, residents, end users and tourists.
Actually, talk to people!
To this end, the Mayor, Councillors, upper and middle Council managers and the crew from the Botanic Gardens can be deployed one day a week/ fortnight to work on the front line.
This would raise awareness and knowledge of the real issues, ensure appropriate utilisation of limited resources, promote a positive organisational culture, community engagement and a view into the world of tourism.
Council documents state there is not an erosion issue in Pialba, Point Vernon and Gatakers as they have rocky platforms.
These same documents recommend weed management, fire management, preservation of views and tree removal.
Ultra Tune Hervey Bay
Introducing 2 Hour Express Car Service

• That’s any log book* or maintenance car service in under 2 hours

Open: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
Given these criteria council scores an F for failure!
Therefore, the planting of trees in the name of erosion is unnecessary and a waste of resources.
Stop planting trees until the parks, gardens and foreshore reserves can be appropriately managed.
The council needs to undertake a massive weed management program such as, but not limited to: the removal and poisoning of non-indigenous flora including cottonwoods, rubber trees, African tulips, cacti, prickly pear, oleander, guava, mother of millions, mother-in-law tongue, asparagus fern, acacias, exotics, varies species of pines, various species of palms, various species of vines/strangler vines and various species of grasses etc etc etc.
Trim the overgrown grass and mulch to bring these parks, gardens and foreshore reserves to the same standard as south of Beach Road and the Botanic gardens.
Tourists have a much higher standard than the Council.
They are not interested in over grown, weed infected and neglected vegetation,
but seeking views and activities involving the water and sand.
The graffiti covered tree killing signs are not tourist attractions.
Ugly, non-educative and ineffective deterrents as proven by research and the Council still installing them.
They are punitive, punishing the community and tourists and allowing the guilty to walk free.
As the signage is ineffective, the Council is looking to install cameras at great expense.
Cameras have no effect on anti-social behaviour (eg youth crime) nor do they identify disguised offenders.
Another waste of money!
Instead of pursuing these ineffective strategies reinvest these funds into beautifying the bay and its surrounds.
Positive step forward and an investment into the future of tourism.
Pet tourism is an everincreasing industry with airlines introducing pet travellers.
Tourist destinations need to cater for pets.
However, the Council revamped foreshore tourist parks are not pet friendly.
The most expansive off leash pet friendly beach
from Pialba to Point Vernon is a health and wellbeing hazard for pets, locals and tourists.
It is littered with dead and dying trees with many near death experiences from falling branches, skull and eye injuries from the many low-lying branches at head height and the risk of falls at high tide.
No agency is taking responsibility for the removal of these Council planted trees.
This issue is ongoing with advancing tides, receding coastline and Councils ill-informed practice of planting non endemic, non-indigenous species on the coastline, close to the coastline and on flood plains.
Stop these plantings in the parks, gardens and foreshore reserves until such time as they have tourist attraction status.
Make the beach and access to the beach pet and tourist friendly.
To make Hervey Bay a tourist hot spot the Council has a lot of remedial work to undertake and subsequently maintain.
Be a tourist in your own town!

WORK has started on a new seawall along the Urangan foreshore to safeguard key infrastructure from the ongoing threat of coastal erosion.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said the seawall, which will extend 150 metres east of the Urangan Pier, is designed to protect the natural beach environment and reduce the risk of future damage to nearby infrastructure.
“Coastal protection is essential for the Fraser Coast, where our 112km of shoreline plays a vital role in supporting local infrastructure and community assets,” he said.
“This project will help reduce the risk of damage to critical infrastructure in the area, ensuring it remains resilient for years to come.”
“Council is grateful to the Australian Government for their generous $2.43 million funding contribution towards the $3.2 million project through their Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program,” Cr O’Keefe said.
During construction, a 480-metre section of the beach will be fenced off, temporarily closing five formal and informal beach access points. Community access to the
beach will remain available through two existing access points. After construction is finished, a new beach access staircase will provide access to this section of Urangan Beach.
“We understand these closures may cause some inconvenience, but they are necessary to ensure the safety of both the community and the workers,” Cr O’Keefe said.
Australian Government Minister for Emergency Management, Jenny McAllister said this project highlights the Albanese Government’s work to safeguard coastal communities and infrastructure.
“We are proud to work with the Fraser Coast Regional Council to deliver this essential resilience project. This is an example of how the Albanese
Government is supporting communities to be better prepared for and protected from future natural disasters.
“The Urangan seawall will help strengthen the coastline and enhance local resilience for future extreme weather events.”
The seawall is expected to be completed by June 2025.
During the construction period, a designated haulage route will be in place for transporting materials, with heavy vehicles to travel down Boat Harbour Drive, Pulgul Street, Kent Street, Larsen Street, Guard Street then onto Charlton Esplanade.

Fraser Coast’s Freshest Flow ers
FRASER Coast Regional Council has completed a detailed business case for the ‘Fraser Coast Water Grid,’ which will connect the Hervey Bay and Maryborough water supply schemes.
Mayor George Seymour said the business case shows the project’s benefits surpass its costs, and it will serve as a roadmap for the detailed design, approvals, and funding needed for the water grid.
“Council is proposing to connect our water supply systems by building a two-way pipeline and pumping stations, forming a Fraser Coast Water Grid,” he said.
“This will allow treated water to be pumped between Fraser Coast major water service areas, improving water security and reliability, and maximising the use of our water sources.
“The ability to transfer water
throughout the region also provides flexibility if one of the treatment plants is affected by plant failure, a natural disaster, or major planned maintenance.
“The economic analysis indicates the water grid will save the community about $88 million by avoiding severe water restrictions.
“A water grid is all about ensuring a safe, reliable and secure water supply for all of the Fraser Coast.”
Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said preliminary estimates suggest the water grid could cost $60 million to construct, with Council to seek funding from other levels of government through dedicated water grid funding programmes.
“Council recognises that water is our most valuable resource and endorsed the ‘Fraser Coast Water Supply
Security Strategy’ in early 2022 to guide future investment in the regional water network,” he said.
“This strategy identified the water grid and a desalination plant in Hervey Bay by 2036, as key to a secure, reliable and affordable water future for the Fraser Coast.
“The business case is the next step in progressing the Fraser Coast Water Grid, with detailed design work to now follow. Council has also endorsed the business case for submission to the State and Commonwealth Departments responsible for National Water Grid funding programs.”
A more precise project cost estimate for the Fraser Coast Water Grid will be available after the detailed design is completed.
THE SLEEPBUS has been in operation in Hervey Bay since early 2023. It provides a safe and comfortable sleep for the homeless three nights a week.
Thanks to a generous $100,000 donation from Community Bank Hervey Bay, part of Bendigo Bank, the sleepbus initiative has transformed the lives of hundreds of individuals facing homelessness—those who often struggle to find what many of us take for granted.
This funding has enabled the construction of the sleepbus vehicle, which offers a safe and temporary overnight accommodation solution, providing our community’s most vulnerable individuals with an immediate and costeffective option for shelter.
The value of a comfortable night sleep can never be underestimated.
sleepbus has eight secure, climate controlled sleep pods with a lockable door and toilet. Each pod can also be doubled into bunks, enabling up to 16 pods.
Everyone is looked after with overnight volunteer caretakers and CCTV surveillance, with under bus storage for belongings, and pets are
welcome to stay also.
This operation does not happen without contribution from local volunteers.
Nat ‘slumberjack’ Genoni, Services Coordinator for sleepbus said, “the service relies on volunteers and someone’s night sleep is determined by their support.”
“Some of the busiest nights we have experienced from supporting regions across Australia has been in Hervey Bay”.
“We have diehard core volunteers that makes this happen but we always need more, we don’t want to burn out these wonderful people”.
“The Caretaker role in
particular needs recruitment as we currently rely on a few volunteers for the 12 hour shift.”
“The caretakers are protected in a safe environment and we train all volunteers prior to commencing their roles.”
Drivers are also challenging to find as they require a MR Licence with previous experience.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, that would be awesome! They really need your help.
Check out all the roles and videos on their volunteer page and you can sign up and get onboard! www.sleepbus.org/ volunteer
When starting a new business there is an enormous amount of detail to consider; particularly when rebranding a successful franchise into an independent real estate agency. PLATINUM PROPERTY Fraser Coast have done just that and WIDE BAY MOTOR GROUP have been nothing short of exceptional. Tom, Chris and all the team took the stress out of purchasing our new property management vehicles. The three new colour branded MG3’s were delivered on time complete with signage from Hervey Bay Graphics.

SIX COMMUNITY members have been appointed to a Fraser Coast Regional Council advisory committee to help guide the ongoing development and management of the Mary to Bay Rail Trail.
Cr Lachlan Cosgrove said the Mary to Bay Rail Trail stretches from Maryborough to the Urangan Pier, following the disused rail line that once connected the coal mines and farms of the Wide Bay Burnett to the pier.
“Residents and visitors can walk, run or ride through two distinct sections – the urban area of Hervey Bay, and the rural section through beautiful forest areas between Nikenbah and Maryborough, which is progressively being developed,” he said.
“Council endorsed the Mary to Bay Rail Trail Development Plan in 2019 and has worked with Fraser Coast Bicycle User Group volunteers and the Queensland Government to refurbish sections of the trail with a new 11-kilometre stretch opening around Takura about a year ago.
“The advisory committee provides a platform for community members and user groups to make recommendations to Council on issues including future development, operations and maintenance, marketing and promotion, as well as events and grant opportunities.”
The committee includes three
and representatives from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Fraser Coast Tourism and Events.
The appointed community members will serve on the advisory committee for a two year term, starting from November 2024.

AMELIA Olsen, a Hervey Bay local, dedicated mother, author, and small school principal, is on an extraordinary journey, embarking on the Long Ride Home—a 15,000 km motorcycle trek across Australia to raise awareness for mental health through the Black Dog Ride charity.
Having lost her husband to suicide in 2015, Amelia is turning her grief into action. Together with her son, she previously fulfilled their shared dream of riding to Cape York, a significant milestone that reignited her passion for motorcycling.
Now, she is set to make a greater impact by participating in the Long Ride Home, which took her and twelve other riders across diverse landscapes, engaging communities in crucial conversations about mental health.
Amelia, the only female rider in the group, is determined to shine a light on the challenges many face in silence.
“This ride is not just about the kilometers; it’s about raising awareness and fostering a sense of community around mental health issues,” Amelia said.
“Every stop is an opportunity to share my story and connect
with others who may be struggling.”
“We have people stopping to ask what we are doing, which then opens up a conversation around mental health”.
“People are donating cash as we ride pass or stop in at a Roadhouses”.
“Everyone is chipping in and helping each other out. We have other groups of riders that may need help with a brakedown and we just help.
“It’s like a mateship thing. You see big biker men on their Harleys opening up and showing emotion—something
men don’t often do. We are slowly making a change.”
The Black Dog Ride, established in 2009, aims to break the stigma surrounding depression and has successfully raised millions for mental health programs across Australia.
Amelia returned to Hervey Bay on 24th October 2024.
Amelia’s determination and resilience are inspiring.
As she rides through the heart of Australia, she hopes to empower others to seek help and speak openly about their mental health challenges.

Comfort Kitchen, HBNC’s free weekly community meal, received a $20,000 donation from chartered accounting, business advisory and wealth management firm, Ulton.
The funds, raised at this year’s Ulton Race Day, will go directly towards providing more than 100 meals per week to people in the Hervey Bay community who are struggling financially and socially.
Ulton’s annual Race Day, held in Bundaberg, brings together clients, associates, and team members to raise funds for causes relating to homelessness or vulnerable people.
A day at the races is always filled with excitement, and this year’s Ulton Race Day was no exception.
While guests enjoyed a day of fun, fashion, and thrilling races, the real winners were those benefiting from Ulton’s generous community support, Ulton Partner, Natalie Macdonald said.
“Ulton Race Day is our way of showing appreciation to our clients, associates, and employees,” Ms Macdonald said.
“It’s an opportunity to enjoy
great company and local racing while also giving back to the community.
“We are incredibly proud to donate $20,000 to HBNC’s Comfort Kitchen.
It’s wonderful to support a grassroots program that brings people together and makes such a positive impact on the community.
Tanya Stevenson, HBNC CEO, welcomed the donation and thanked the Ulton team for their generosity and community-mindedness.
“Comfort Kitchen is a fully self-funded program, meaning it relies on the generosity of community members, partners, and businesses like Ulton,” Ms Stevenson said.
“We are so grateful to the Ulton team for choosing Comfort Kitchen to receive this donation, which will make a real difference in the lives
of our community’s most vulnerable.
“It’s through support like this that Comfort Kitchen has continued to serve the Hervey Bay community for more than 10 years.”
Ms Stevenson said Comfort Kitchen was so much more than a meal to many in Hervey Bay, emphasising the importance of socialising and building connection when attending the weekly event at the Hervey Bay Community Centre.
“Our dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly each week to cook and serve delicious and healthy food for more than 100 guests,” Ms Stevenson said.
“This donation will help us continue working towards our goal of creating connected communities throughout Hervey Bay.”

THE BURRUM District Community Men’s Shed in Howard recently received funding through the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Community Grants 20232024 Program, specifically in Rounds 3 and 4.
This grant has enabled the group to install a concrete slab, providing a dedicated space for the storage of their newly acquired Lucas Mill.
The slab forms part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the security and protection of this valuable piece of equipment from the elements.
The Lucas Mill offers the community a sustainable way to recycle fallen logs, which would otherwise be burned or sent to landfill.
By using the mill, members gain valuable experience and contribute to environmental preservation.
The sense of accomplishment from these efforts not only benefits the environment but also fosters camaraderie among members and other local groups.
This shared effort boosts the community’s sense of selfworth and pride.
Recently, the members of the Burrum District Community Men’s Shed collaborated with the Bauple Community Shed, where they milled a significant number of logs.
The timber produced will be divided between the two groups, lowering their overall
operating costs by reducing the need to purchase sawn timber.
A portion of the timber from the Lucas Mill was also used to build outdoor seating for the Howard State School P&C, showcasing the tangible benefits of the Shed’s work within the local community.
The Burrum District Community Men’s Shed expressed their appreciation for the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s ongoing support of not-for-profit community groups.
This backing is instrumental in helping local initiatives thrive and make a meaningful difference in the region.

IT’S HARD to believe we’re entering the festive season, leading us toward the familiar “New Year, New Me” resolutions.
Hopefully, we’ve begun to establish healthier lifestyles, but this holiday season can challenge that balance— especially for families.
While the festive season can be joyous, it often brings stress that impacts our mental and physical health.
Increased expectations, reduced movement, and a rise in sugar and alcohol consumption can lead to declines in wellness.
So how can we enjoy the celebrations while maintaining balance?
Practising mindful eating is essential during this time. Before heading to gatherings, having a healthy snack can help curb hunger, leading to better choices later.
If you choose to drink alcohol, try to aim to enjoy
alcoholic drinks in moderation, remembering to hydrate during and the day after.
Routine is crucial for our overall well-being. Establish regular meal times
and set limits on screen time during the break. Engage in family activities that promote both connection and exercise, such as kicking the footy, going for a swim, playing cricket, bike rides, or beach walks.
These activities not only provide structure but also foster relationships and enhance emotional health.
As we navigate the season, don’t hesitate to lean on your support network. Share your feelings with friends or family, fostering an environment where emotions can be discussed openly.
As we cherish time with loved ones, let’s also remember to reach out to those who may be alone or have lost loved ones during this season.
A simple message or invitation to join in celebrations can make a significant difference in their holiday experience.
As we embrace the festivities, let’s commit to caring for ourselves and each other. By preparing our minds and bodies, and focusing on connection through activity, we can truly enjoy this season without sacrificing our health. Here’s to celebrating joy while nurturing a balanced life!

FRASER Coast is the next region to benefit from disability accommodation developed by Accessible Homes Australia (AHA) as it prepares for construction on its fourth Queensland project in Hervey Bay.
Twelve new residential villas for National Disability Insurance Scheme (‘NDIS’) participants with high physical support needs are being built in Urraween within a growing community with close, flat access to shopping, recreation and allied health services.
Named Urraween Village, the single-level dwellings will each have two bedrooms, allowing participant tenants to live with family or friends, accessible facilities including swimming pool and gym, and onsite shared support offering 24-hour care.
AHA has already delivered three award-winning, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) projects on the Gold Coast and Hervey Bay is its first project in its regional
Queensland expansion.
Founded by Perry Cross AM, who lives with quadriplegia and his long-time friends, developer Tom Ray, and homebuilders Tim Douglas and Jason Doerr, AHA is committed to helping people with high physical support needs find independence through accessible housing.
“There are too many people living in unsuitable homes either in shortterm accommodation, with family or in aged-care facilities and that needs to change,” said Mr Cross.
“The good news is, there is a government scheme available through the NDIS called Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) that is designed to get people into appropriate housing.
“The problem is there is not enough SDA homes available or in the pipeline and too many people are forced into Australia’s predominant disability housing model of group homes.
“Projects are starting to proliferate
in metropolitan areas, but we recognise there is still a significant lack of independent living options in regional communities.
“AHA is trying to change that by creating housing that gives people choice in where they live, and who they live with.”
AHA, a 2023 Queensland Telstra Business Award winner, has already housed 18 NDIS participants who are enjoying the freedoms of independent living in everyday communities.
The team plans to replicate their success in Hervey Bay and are calling for people to apply for one of the 12 villas which has begun construction this month, with completion earmarked for tenants to move in from October next year.
Mr Cross said AHA’s ’shared care’ model meant participants could live in their own independent homes, with the added security of 24-hour onsite shared support acting as an affordable safety net outside primary
“We have found this model not only gives peace of mind to the participant, but additional freedoms for any live-in carers who are often family members or spouses,” he said.
“This care model is also delivered at a cost saving to both the participant and the NDIS when compared with 24/7 in-home shared services like those in group homes.
“Having lived with family for 25 years after my accident, I know firsthand how life-changing independent living is and helping others find the same freedoms as I now enjoy is the motivation behind AHA.”
Urraween Village will feature wheelchair accessible residents’ facilities including multimedia lounge and kitchenette, exercise and rehabilitation gym, swimming pool with hoist, outdoor barbeque and dining area and sensory garden.
The site has adjoining access to the flat and accessible Hervey Bay
Rail Trail, is one kilometre from Stockland Shopping Centre and Bunnings, 1.5 kilometres to two hospitals and 2.5 kilometres to the waterfront beach walk footpath.
Mr Ray said when planning an SDA project, finding the right location was paramount.
“AHA builds Specialist Disability Accommodation in thriving communities to ensure residents have easy access to transport, amenities, recreation and employment,” he said.
“Our residents have custom homes built to suit their specific needs, onsite facilities to improve their quality of life, access to amenity that enhances their lifestyle and proximity to communities to keep them connected.”
The villas will include customised home automation, duress and communication technologies, voicecontrolled air-conditioning and emergency battery powered alternate electric source.
The second bedroom can be adapted as a multifunction space for anything from an informal support base, additional lounge, or office.
The villas will have generous, accessible terrace balconies, and will be provisioned for a bedroom hoist, as well as automatic doors and blinds.
“Having witnessed the transformation of so many participants in our Gold Coast projects, we are desperate to deliver more opportunities for participants across Queensland,” said Mr Ray.
“AHA works with participants and their families to navigate the funding and approval process. We invite anyone with high physical support needs to apply for a home at Urraween Village via phone or on our website.”

AS TEMPERATURES rise, Fraser Coast residents are being urged to review their pool safety measures to protect their families and save lives this summer.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Michelle Byrne said 99 people tragically drowned across Australia last summer, a ten per cent increase from the previous year.
“There is absolutely no room for complacency when it comes to pool safety,” she said.
“Pool owners must regularly inspect and maintain their pools and spas, ensuring they meet Queensland’s Pool Safety Standards.”
Under Queensland law, a swimming pool is defined as any structure that can hold 300 millimetres (30cm) or more of water and is used primarily for swimming, wading or paddling. This applies to wading pools including blow up pools and spas.
Cr Byrne said while pools and spas can provide endless fun, they also come with serious responsibilities.
“Check your pool fence and gate meet current safety standards. Learn CPR, display a compliant CPR sign and never leave your pool gate propped open. Remove any
object that could be used to climb over your fence,” she said.
“Parents and guardians should always keep their full attention on kids in the pool, so putting mobile phones away can make a big difference in preventing accidents.
“By following these simple tips and abiding by the law, we can ensure our pools are safe for everyone.”
• Rewards program giving you discounts to an everexpanding list of retailers
• Ongoing professional development and learning opportunities.
• Employee assistance program for you and your family
• A nurturing and supportive environment allows for a healthy work life balance.
• Flexible working arrangement
The Fraser Coast is a popular region for swimming pools with over 10,000 residents living in a house with a swimming pool or spa.
“If you’ve recently moved to
a property with a pool and are unsure if the fencing complies, please engage a Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licensed pool safety inspector to check your barrier’s safety,” Cr Byrne said.
“All regulated swimming pools must have a current safety certificate or a building approval for the pool and safety barrier, and they must be registered with the QBCC.”
More information about swimming pool requirements is available on Council’s website at https://www.frasercoast.qld. gov.au/poolsafety.
THE FRASER Coast, with Hervey Bay at its heart, has transformed into one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions, with a current population of 118,505 projected to climb to over 151,000 by 2046.
Meanwhile, Bundaberg’s population, now around 104,166, is expected to reach just 125,000 by the same year. Despite this clear growth gap, the previous governments have poured resources into Bundaberg, housing major departments like the Wide Bay Health Board, Main Roads, and others there, shaping it as the focal point of Wide Bay.
So, as residents, let’s ask: shouldn’t Fraser Coast be steering its own future?
investment, Fraser Coast’s growing needs for healthcare, transport, education, and policing infrastructure have
representing Fraser Coast, we have an opportunity to forge a new path.
The latest Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan has shown the stark reality of this imbalance.
With Bundaberg allocated a new Level 5 hospital and the lion’s share of infrastructure
once again taken a backseat. This oversight comes at a critical time, with Fraser Coast facing unprecedented pressures from rapid, postCOVID population increases. With a new state government and two newly elected LNP members
Imagine a dedicated Fraser Coast Health Board, a tailored Fraser Coast regional development plan, or even an independent Main Roads division focused solely on addressing our infrastructure needs. These changes would allow the Fraser Coast to establish its own distinct identity and, finally, step out of Bundaberg’s shadow. This is a moment to challenge old perspectives and advocate for Fraser Coast’s rightful place as an autonomous regional powerhouse.
What do you think? Is it time for Fraser Coast to set its own course?
THE HERVEY Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres will temporarily operate on revised hours six days a week to maintain and improve safety for both staff and patrons.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Director Strategy, Community and Development Gerard Carlyon said maintaining safety and supervision standards at the aquatic facilities is Council’s highest priority.
“With the Fraser Coast labour market strengthening and the unemployment rate dropping from 12.5 per cent in 2018 to 5 per cent this year, it has become increasingly difficult to attract and retain staff for our aquatic facilities,” he said.
“Our aquatic centres are a fantastic place for our community members to relax, exercise and develop their swimming skills.
“However, it’s crucial that we have enough qualified and trained staff to supervise swimmers and meet the Royal Lifesaving Society Australia Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations.
“To continue offering quality services and programs, we

must transition to a more sustainable operating model that addresses these staffing challenges, while investing in and prioritising staff training and development.
“As part of this strategy, Council will also convert temporary part-time positions to permanent part-time roles to enhance job security and support ongoing operations at our aquatic facilities.
“Improving our staff’s capacity will support swimming programs that increase water safety awareness and teach essential swimming skills.

TIME is running out to recognise someone who makes a difference in our community, with nominations for the 2025 Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards closing in a month!
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said these awards provide a fantastic opportunity to honour the achievements of those who make the Fraser Coast special.
“The Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards are presented annually to local citizens and groups who are making a positive impact or accomplishing great things,” he said.
“If you know someone who’s had an exceptional year in sport, made a significant
contribution to the region’s cultural and creative life, or tirelessly volunteered without recognition, now is the time to show your appreciation by nominating them.
“This year, we’ve streamlined the categories from twelve down to five, making it easier than ever to nominate a deserving individual or group.”
The 2025 Fraser Coast Australia Day Award categories are:
• Citizen of the Year (26 years and over)
• Young Citizen of the Year (under 26 years)
• Sport and Wellbeing Award (all ages)
• Arts and Culture Award (all ages)
• Community Group or Organisation of the Year
“Nominating someone is a wonderful way to say thank you to those who make a difference or to celebrate a star in their field,” said Cr Seymour.
A recognition ceremony for nominees will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025, followed by the Australia Day Awards Presentation at the Brolga Theatre on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Nominations can be submitted online via www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ australia-day and must be completed by Friday, December 6, 2024
EMMA is one-of-a-kind, spirited, and proud to call Hervey Bay home. She laughs when she explains her nickname, “Queen Beach” – a playful twist on a not-so-nice word.”
For Emma, it’s all in good fun. “To find out what it truly stands for,” she says with a grin, “you’ll have to come and ask me!”
Born in Campbelltown, Sydney, thirty-seven-year-old Emma has faced a lot, having been diagnosed with Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy at birth.
One side of her face was paralysed so she has had to do a lot of physio and speech therapy over the years.
In Sydney, Emma’s school years were difficult. She was sent to a special school and then integrated into a regular primary school where she was bullied relentlessly.
Bay with her family.
It wasn’t easy finding a school as the one that had special education didn’t have wheelchair access and the one that did have wheelchair access didn’t have special education.
So, Emma had no choice but to go to a special school. Eventually, Emma decided to do distance education instead.
Despite all this, Emma made lifelong friends who saw beyond the chair and are still close to her today.
Emma lives with housemates in an NDIS-supported home and shares her life with friends, caregivers, and her two cats and two rats.
She is also a songwriter and has recently recorded an album called Queen Beach, Queen of the Bay.
The album features a mix of genres. “Working with Yoshi
transformative. Yoshi understands what I want to say and helps me bring it to life.
“Music is a great emotional outlet and does wonders for mental health,” says Emma.
Emma’s caregivers, Tayla and Beck, mean the world to her.
They’re not just her support workers; they’re her friends. Emma loves it when Beck helps her get glammed up for events, doing her hair and makeup, while Tayla has been instrumental in encouraging her musical talents.
Tayla even recorded a song herself, inspired by Emma’s courage.
A recent photoshoot for her album cover was a landmark moment.
Dressed in her crown and standing on the beach near the Torquay Jetty, she felt amazing.
for the first time since she was a child. “It was surreal.”
She laughs as she remembers how her chair got stuck in the sand and she had to be carried off the beach.
Emma doesn’t let her wheelchair define her.
“People assume a lot about those in wheelchairs,” she says.
“Employers overlook us, thinking we can’t do things, but we’re just as capable as anyone else.”
With a Diploma in Management and a Cert III in Business Administration, she’s proven her skills and even held an administrative role with the TS Krait’s which gave her a sense of purpose.
Now, her music and creative projects fill her life with purpose too and while she says she isn’t the best
She has come out of her shell and hopes to inspire others to do the same through the power of music.
Her plans for the future are bright. She’s working on an EP and looking forward to a birthday getaway to the Gold Coast with Tayla, where they plan to “run amok.”
Emma also dreams of a Hervey Bay with more accessibility and inclusion—a place where all businesses have ramps, aisles are wheelchair-friendly, and our region has a nightclub.
Emma lives life fully, with courage, joy, and a whole lot of laughter.
To follow Emma’s journey, visit her Queen Beach Facebook page or download her album on Spotify or whichever other music platform you
Dane & Jasmine Corrick look forward to the lineup.
Kyle (calamari), Tash, Trina & Wild Bill love the energy of The Raidiators. Aiden Jay looks like a rocker!
Karen, Christine, Di & Jen are ready to rock!
Friends, Riky Setiawan & Jamie Vanzetta won tickets to see the concert and can’t wipe the smiles off their faces.
Birthday girl Angela Mason celebrates her 50th with friend Sondra Zirilli – Both are Leo Sayer fans. Kevin, Glenda, Sandie & Harry love their music.
Erin Kelly, Chris Woolard, Scott Nielsen, and James Rik think there is nothing better than live music!

Loan settlement story-time!
Did your bank or broker say no to your loan application? This is what happened to Lee and Sam who had an existing home loan and needed to consolidate some debts.
They’d had a rough couple of years and were quite behind on their mortgage repayments and they were struggling to make the minimum payments on some credit card debt that they had accrued. Both of these factors had negatively impacted their credit score and meant that their regular bank did not want to lend
Insights
them any more money to consolidate and streamline their finances.
The Go Further broker team were able to look at Lee and Sam’s situation personally and deep dive into the reasons behind their hardship. Using this information, a well structured loan application was submitted and Lee and Sam’s debt were consolidated. They now had only one overall repayment comig out of their account each muchclearing their minds and freeing up cashflow for other expenses.
Why talking to an expert counts.
Lenders assess potential clients based on various criteria to determine whether they will offer loans. These factors create a landscape where clients may receive different responses from different lenders.
Spotlight! Lending policy of the fortnight
If you don’t have the time or the expertise to get a handle on all the different home loans on offer, it pays to talk to someone who does.
Lending policy refers to the set of guidelines, rules, and criteria that a financial institution or lender follows when determining whether to approve a loan to a borrower.
Today’s policy: Debt Consolidation
We’ve built relationships with more than 60 of the country’s most respected lenders. We talk to each one, daily, to find out their latest rates and special offers. And because we apply for hundreds of loans every week on behalf of our customers, we know who is approving quickly and the information they’re looking for. It means you don’t just get to choose from a huge range of rates and products. You also get a head start on other buyers in the market.
If you’re struggling with multiple debt repayments, even 2 or 3, then consolidating via a personal loan OR via your home loan can reduce the headache of managing multiple repayments and overall cost. This is also a quick way to increase your credit score. You don’t need to own property to do this and it can be a great way to help you reduce debt faster as well. **Lending and eligibility criteria apply.
Over 60 lenders you know and trust, in one place.
Our relationships with all of the brands you see here gives you confidence that we can find the right lender for your unique situation.
