In 1875 the Maryborough, Wide Bay and Burnett Pastoral and Agricultural Society held their first annual show with displays of local crafts, produce and livestock, equestrian and woodchopping events, plus a Grand Parade.
Nearly 150 years later, the show continues to be a staple on the radar of many people, if not far less than it was in generations before.
The historic event must remain an integral event on our calendar, but do we really need another public holiday to help celebrate it?
A few weeks ago, I flew a text message around
Reply 1: The 40 million dollars from the Australian Government for City Centre Activation has not increased over the years since first announced by Council.
The increase in cost of building material etc needed has and the two years build on the corner of Main Street and Torquay Road will have increased since first costing was done and will most likely be double by the time it is completed.
The statement in the
response from Council stating
it is only an ESTIMATE of 100 Million Dollars in the article in your recent paper dated 4 May 2023 on page 12 and 13.
But in all reality, the residents are looking at a much larger debt if this building goes ahead.
This will mean increased rates which a lot of residents are already struggling with, while much needed infrastructure and other needs of the residents fall by the wayside.
The Council is selling land and land with houses on them
in large numbers because of unpaid rates. They raised 5 million dollars from sales last year from an auction of these properties and then proudly stated the money going towards the cost of the new Council Administration building and Library.
Reply 2: There is land behind the library and in front of the library for the library and university to expand.
Instead, the Council plans to build a Pump Park behind the library, which would be better suited along the Esplanade where the Water Park and all the other activities are situated
to twenty of my closest friends, many of whom are in business.
I asked a simple question. ‘What are you doing on the show weekend?’
Not a single one said they were actually going to the show.
The most popular response was ‘When is that on?’, closely followed by ‘No, we are heading away for a long weekend’.
I believe it is an absurd proposition to say that the Fraser Coast Show holiday contributes to our local economic activity.
It’s a loss for us and a major win for other economies, as residents leave the region in droves for a long weekend.
Businesses have to endure eleven public
and out in the open so people can see what behaviour is happening not hidden behind the library.
I use a wheelchair and walker, and I have not found any difficulties in accessing and using the library we have now, and it meets all my needs. I would like to know what areas do not cater for the disabled and the elderly.
Reply 3: The present Council administration buildings are more central for Disaster Resilience to be located as it is on five acres of land to build on than the small area of land proposed on
holidays during the year; surely this is one we can easily do without.
For those businesses across the Fraser Coast that are opening on the Show Day Holiday, the labour cost goes through the roof.
I spent many years in a rural community when I was growing up, and I understand the history and romance of the local agricultural show.
But I think it’s time we got real with ourselves about how beneficial the Fraser Coast Show holiday is.
I would prosecute the case that it is very much the opposite.
Show is a yes. Holiday is a no.
Tell us what you think. Send us an email or message on Facebook.
Main Street, and there is not enough parking already in and around Main Street as the new Building has limited parking assigned to it.
Reply 4: The Council says the community needs this. Why not an entertainment centre there instead and it could also be used for Disaster Resilience when needed.
The 40 million dollars from the Government the article states it is to be used for City Centre Activation, it doesn’t say it has to be spent on a new administration and library.
Reply 5: Why are hundreds of millions of dollars of new
development inquiries being held up over the new Council office and library not going ahead? What are these new developments waiting to go ahead?
The Fraser Coast Regional Council Joint Venture Report they did states: “The Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Conflict of Interest: Perceived conflict of interest by the local devolvement community if the Fraser Coast Regional Council undertakes a Commercial Joint Venture project of large scale that competes with the broader commercial market.”
From my understanding, that
means that the development plans would be harmful to already established businesses on the Fraser Coast.
There is a lot more information in the report, which makes it an interesting read. It is your job to find a cheaper option instead of putting us into such a huge debt that the Council will not be able to find the funds for other projects and issues that affect the residents of the Fraser Coast that needs resolving.
The Council does not seem to be upfront in their dealing with the community. For example: All advertising for the proposal Survey for Commercial and Community use of Pier and Jetties has on it only Commercial and Community use, which wouldn’t worry the larger population, so they don’t bother to do the survey. No mention is made of Private Use of the Pier and Jetties, and Partial or Full Hire of the Pier and Jetties are mentioned until you do the survey. I feel this is dishonest behaviour by our elected Mayor and Councillors to get something through the Council below the radar of residents. Time for a change and having a more
upfront and honest Mayor and Councillor acting on our behalf.

This is to bring yourself and every other ratepayer of the Fraser Coast the abysmal lack of financial management by our Council.
Due to their financial mismanagement, we are $23 million dollars in debt!
At a time when the council are raking in an enormous amount of extra revenue due to the increase in new housing in and around Hervey Bay.
And now, our Mayor George Seymour, has informed us that he will not be sitting again as Mayor at the next elections, and yet he wants to foist upon us a further $100 million dollars of debt to pay for The Edifice on Main Street as his leaving legacy!
Shame on you George.

attributed to Cr David Lee and Glen Winney regarding our airports and immediately thought here we go again!
We went through all of this in 2004, did our region need two airports 30 minutes apart?
Wouldn’t a new regional airport, away from built up areas serve the regions needs better?
Wouldn’t the selling off of both Hervey Bay and Maryborough’s airports for subdivision not go a long way to covering the cost?
Glen suggests privatisation of our airport is the way to go! Tell me just one public utility that, on being privatised, reduced costs and improved services.
On 9 June 2004, the council of the day voted unanimously to upgrade the airport. Sadly, $11 million failed to correct the “dip/hump” in the runway necessitating the need for an “exemption” to allow jets to land and take-off.
So the question remains, does our region need two airports, and are they in the best location?
We got it wrong last time; let’s not make the same mistake again.

CHILDREN need to be taught self respect before they can deal with respect for others. Parenting now seems be “I’ll be your friend not your parent.” That is where the problems begin. HOW do you teach a young person that their family is ‘no good’? That their parents are ‘not good’? Cause often the ‘problem’ for want of a better word, is generational. Like a snowball growing larger and larger as it rolls down a hill. The first thing that should happen is a type of relocation. Taking an offender away from their family and/or peers, and housing them in a facility akin to a boarding school or actually place them in a functioning boarding school, can work. When you are surrounded by the people and peers that ‘enable’ your criminal behaviour a change in environment is going to help. But that new environment has to be resourced properly and the ‘offender’ must have access to prompt, timely and effective help.
WHEN incarceration means something and is a deterrent. Definitely will make a difference. Being responsible and accountable for your actions is a bloody good start
IF prison sentences were actually worthwhile, they’d be a deterrent
CHILDREN learn from their parents, and that’s a fact
IT’S not a one solution fix.
This is the result of multiple changes in family life. I grew up in a one income household where my mother dished out the discipline and capital punishment was a thing. You stuffed up, the punishment fit the severity of the stuff up. Boundaries were set and you knew if you stepped over them you got it. It taught respect. Then the government (Labor) led by Whitlam decided Australia should be on the world stage and that’s when we no longer could afford to be a one income middle Australia (the backbone of taxpayers) and
women had to go to work to make ends meet. Children were put lower on the priority list as far as supervision and support because the bills had to be paid.
Then the big corporations wanted weekend trading so parents had to work on weekends to make ends meet and the children got less supervision and support.
See where I’m going with this??
In the end, the parents that are on the base wage gave up and the dole bludgers that never tried to get a job (but can afford drugs, cigarettes and anything that assures they won’t get a job) have been paid to breed (money supposedly to pay for their children) have spent the money on big screen TV’s, drugs and alcohol and the children who are mentally and physically handicapped (because of the drugs and alcohol abuse) get nothing and the tax payers have to support them financially.
Laws being softened by do gooders and therefore more money to set up support services (there will always be a need for them) over and above what should be needed and greedy politicians who are only worried about filling their own pockets has caused the descent into chaos and poverty.
The whole system needs a massive overhaul. STARTS way before punishment. The government has destroyed families with their stupid policies and making parents incarcerate their children in daycares all day every day from early age just so they can survive. So many angry people now including children. Children are being raised by strangers, their peers, tv and internet. What do they expect. Look at the good kids and see what is different in their lives? That’s where I would start.
PRESCRIPTION drugs for kids, daycare and the internet. Barely being able to survive on a modest single income. Teenage crime has always been around though.

JOBSEEKERS of all ages are being encouraged to go along to the Fraser Coast Industry & Careers Showcase to get direct access to current job vacancies, apprenticeship opportunities and long-term career pathways.
The free event is the region’s premier employment expo, taking place at Maryborough Showgrounds from 1pm5pm on June 7, and is a partnership between Jobs Fraser Coast and Fraser Coast Regional Council. Its key aims are to fill vacancies, address local skills shortages and help local people into local jobs, by bringing businesses, trainers and support agencies together with students, jobseekers and career changers all in the one place.
“The Showcase will feature more than 80 organisations ready to hire or train local workers, from industries including trades and manufacturing, timber and agriculture, health and aged care, police and emergency services, and more,” said Mayor George Seymour.
“We really want to see local people benefiting from all the great opportunities on offer in the region at the moment, and this event will be one of the best ways to do it.”
Jobs Fraser Coast Chair Michelle Hay said the Maryborough Showgrounds
would once again be abuzz with live-action demonstrations, up-close and hands-on experiences, and plenty of opportunities to chat informally to industry experts.
“This event is designed to be practical and meaningful, so there’ll be things like trucks, tractors and tanks, and the chance to try out all sorts of equipment,” she said. “We’re also excited about our biggest single exhibit – a huge site led by Downer and shared with John Holland and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.”
One business returning to the Showcase is Moddex, a
Maryborough-based handrail and balustrade manufacturer that employed two new recruits to join its Design Academy thanks to last year’s event.
“The Showcase was great because it enabled us to talk to interested people there and then,” said Nick Lester, Moddex’s National Projects and Design Manager.
“Not only did we fill the open positions we had, it also generated further interest and put our name out there.”

ST STEPHEN’S
Hospital Hervey Bay is pleased to introduce Peter Wood following his recent appointment as General Manager.
Peter joins St Stephen’s and the UnitingCare Queensland network of hospitals with 30 years’ clinical and leadership experience in healthcare gained both in Australia and internationally.
For more than 20 years, Peter has held senior leadership positions in healthcare, including most recently within the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service, where he was Executive Director Fraser Coast with responsibility for
Hervey Bay and Maryborough hospitals.
Peter has also previously held appointments as Executive Director BMI Healthcare and General Manager roles with portfolios including medicine, surgery, cardiology, Emergency Services and Critical Care.
Peter holds a Bachelor of Science with honours in Health Management, a postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Management, and a Master of Healthcare Leadership and Management at the universities of Lancaster and Auckland.
A proud Hervey Bay resident, Peter said he is passionate about delivering healthcare services for the Fraser Coast
community.
“I’m interested in matching healthcare with population demand, exploring Indigenous healthcare needs, complimenting private and public healthcare services, and I look forward to intertwining the development of local healthcare services with my PHD study in developing cardiology services to match population need,” Peter said.
“I’m thrilled to join the team at St Stephen’s Hospital and to have the opportunity to lead St Stephen’s through its next chapter of providing exceptional care closer to home for our community.”
MATT Hauser is becoming one of Hervey Bay’s greatest athletes as he currently competes on the international Triathlon circuit and climbs the world rankings.
His recent second place finish in 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series event in Yohohama, Japan which gives him a podium finish five times in his last eight races and now ranked 4th in the World Championship.
Matt spoke exclusively with the Hervey Bay Advertiser and you can sense his growing confidence.
“My focus is firmly set on qualifying for Paris next year and whilst the second place in Yokohama will go a long way to achieving this, the automatic selections are in August and September. There’s a big year ahead,” said Mr Hauser.
It was a bumpy start to the year for the local triathlete who had to deal with some sickness and other setbacks earlier in the year. His overseas competitions provide other challenges that he continues to overcome.
“I’m just really pleased to be performing consistently in a sport that has so many variables and moving pieces with travel etc. Something that I have previously struggled
with. My belief in myself and my ability has grown ten fold,”, said Mr Hauser.
He admits that the biggest challenge whilst being overseas is missing his family and friends. Matt feels fortunate that he has “awesome” support around him that has played a part in his success.
His goals for the rest of the year – “to qualify for the Olympics- Auto selection is a top eight at either the
Test Event in August (Paris) or a top eight at the World Championship Final in September (Spain)”.
Hauser aims to be back in Australia by October to finish the end of the Super League Series of racing and finish off the season with the iconic Noosa Triathlon- a personal debut for him. He hopes to spend Christmas with family and friends in Hervey Bay.
THE SAFETY of cyclists navigating the roundabout at the intersection of the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road/Old Maryborough Road and Boat Harbour Drive has been given a boost with works completed on Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20. Two cycle ramps have been built to allow cyclists on the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road to access the footpath and head directly to Old Maryborough Road
rather than go through the roundabout.
“To ensure that the works were completed quickly and safely, one lane of the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road had to be closed,” Councillor David Lewis said.
“The intersection is one of the busiest in the city.
“Ensuring that cyclists can move safely around the city is very important to Council as we do our bit to tackle climate change and encourage
residents to cut their carbon footprint.
“Cutting the number of vehicles and encouraging people on to bikes has many benefits from cutting congestion to improving our health and wellbeing.
“I am grateful to the cycling community who drew this issue to my attention.”
The cost of the project is split 50/50 between the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Council.

THE BLACK and white photo of Anne’s hands holding a picture of her and husband Brian, ready for a rock and roll dance demonstration is priceless.
It was part of a photographic exhibition staged by the Fraser Coast Dementia Alliance last year to raise awareness of dementia – a group of more than 150 illnesses that can rob a person of their memory.
Brian hopes the exhibition, which will be held again this year as part of Dementia Awareness Week, helps build community awareness about dementia.
“We were very involved in rock and roll dancing and a part of a demonstration group performing Rock and Roll, Swing, Lindy Hop and partner dancing until a few years ago until Anne gradually forgot the steps,” he said.
“We hardly do it anymore.”
He is keen to raise awareness about dementia.
The Fraser Coast Dementia Alliance will host the photographic exhibition as part of Dementia Awareness Week activities during September.
“Dementia is an umbrella term for more than 150 illnesses which can affect people of any age but is
best known to impact more mature community members,” Councillor Paul Truscott said.
“As the Fraser Coast’s population leans towards people aged 50 years and over, there is a high chance this illness will impact every family somehow.
“Dementia Week (September 18 to 24) helps raise community awareness and create a community that is understanding and supports families living with dementia, whether by advocating for more services or ensuring our facilities are accessible and welcoming.”
“The exhibition includes photos of the hands of individuals living with dementia accompanied by a storyboard which helps to remind viewers of the real person and what they have achieved during their life,”
Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Juls de Waard Officer said.
“We are now looking for people who would like to be involved in the exhibition for this year,” she said.
“If you want to be involved, call me on 41942441 or email juls.dewaard@frasercoast.qld. gov.au.”
To assist businesses and other agencies to increase their Dementia Friendliness the Alliance has created a checklist that identifies what you can do to help with this and contacts for resources to further enlighten and assist.
The checklist is available on the Fraser Coast Regional Council website at www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ downloads/file/4112/dementiafriendly-checklist.

YOUR SMILE IS OUR PASSION
FRASER Coast TAFE students learning engineering metal fabrication have used their new skills to develop six sandbag filling stations to assist the local community during emergencies.
Mayor George Seymour today accepted the donation of the new sandbag filling stations on behalf of Fraser Coast Regional Council and thanked the students for their hard work.
“Ensuring Council, SES volunteers and homeowners have access to sandbags during a natural disaster boosts our ability to respond in an emergency,” he said.
“Thanks to the skills of TAFE engineering metal fabrication students, the process of filling sandbags will be a lot easier.”
Cr Seymour said that during emergencies, such as heavy rain and floods, Council sets up temporary sandbag filling stations for residents who need them to protect their property.
“People generally have had to hold the bags open and fill them with sand. With these filling stations, the process will be easier and quicker,” he said.
Cr Seymour said this project enhanced the prefilled sandbag program Council has conducted with the Maryborough Correctional Centre and the Fraser Coast
SES Unit.
“The new sandbag filling stations will be housed predominantly at the SES depots for deployment when needed,” Cr Seymour said.
In the four floods last year (January and February 2022), about 25,000 sandbags were used by Council and residents.
“I congratulate the TAFE students for thinking outside of the box to come up with a project that is practical and benefit so many people across the region,” Cr Seymour said.
“Council uses a lot of sandbags to protect its facilities, especially those in the Maryborough CBD and in the construction of the temporary flood levee which is installed down Adelaide Street to protect the CBD.”
The 12 TAFE students who built the sandbag filling stations are in the East Coast Apprenticeships (ECA) from Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
They range in age from 17 to 52 years old and are undertaking an eight-week course in engineering metal fabrication on the Hervey Bay TAFE campus.
“They are learning both theoretical and practical aspects of engineering and manufacturing processes, including how to use hand tools, power tools, workshop machines, fabrication
equipment, and electric welding machines safely and effectively,” TAFE Queensland Engineering Teacher Tasvir Singh said.
“They were not content with just fulfilling the course requirements and decided to take their project to the next level by creating a sandbagging machine that will benefit their community during times of disaster, such as flooding.
“Manufacturing these machines is innovative and purposeful, providing the community with an essential tool during times of crisis.
“As an educator, I am delighted to see these students taking the initiative to think beyond the classroom and consider how their skills can benefit others.
“It is inspiring to witness students using their newly acquired skills to create something that will benefit their community.
“Their project is an example of how learning can be made more meaningful by encouraging students to think beyond themselves and consider how they can positively impact their community.
“The project is a testament to their willingness to go above and beyond the course requirements, and it is an outstanding achievement.”
BAYSIDE Radiology in Hervey Bay have invested in a new state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner that brings some of the latest health technology to Hervey Bay.
Clinical Manager for Carlisle Health Group, Mr Michael Crook said “We are thrilled to announce that we have officially commenced MRI services as of May 4th and have already scanned our first patient.”
“The addition of this unit to Bayside Radiology is a major health win for residents in Hervey Bay and the surrounding areas. The latest MRI technology has incredible sensitivity, with quicker resolution and scan times. Our team is dedicated to providing the highest level of patient care, and we are honoured to be able to offer this important service to the community as part of our commitment to improve patient health access.”
The project has been nine months in preparation with the MRI scanner being ordered from American and a specialty room built during this time to accommodate. Due to recent changes in Federal rules for MRI, eligible scans will be bilk billed this important service
and will reduce waiting lists.
Adrian Tantari, Member for Hervey Bay, said it was great to see local businesses putting patients first. “I am happy to see that Bayside Radiology has assessed the needs of their patients and recognized the positive impact that will come to the community by providing this next level, revolutionary MRI machine.”
The 3T MRI is a revolutionary MRI machine
that offers a wide range of benefits to both patients and doctors. Its advanced imaging technology provides higher resolution images with greater detail, allowing for more accurate diagnoses. The machine also has a larger bore size and technology which reduces the scan time, making it more comfortable for patients especially those who may experience claustrophobia.

services will be provided from a temporary pop-up facility across the road and alternative venues for up to four months while the library roof is replaced.
Fraser Coast Regional
Councillor David Lewis said the existing library building was 26 years old, with inspections identifying the roof had come to the end of its working life and needed to be replaced.
“The Hervey Bay Library is one of the community’s mostloved facilities with up to 1500 people visiting daily during busy periods to borrow books, DVDs and toys, access digital services and attend events,” he said.
“Across the Fraser Coast, more than 45,000 people are library members –more than a third of our population, highlighting just how popular our libraries are.
“Council acknowledges that
the existing Hervey Bay Library does not have enough space to meet the needs of our growing population, which is why we will be building a new library in coming years under the Hinkler Regional Deal partnership with the Australian Government.
“In the meantime, we need to replace the roof to ensure we keep our staff and citizens safe while continuing to provide services to the community. It’s important that we protect and maintain this valuable asset for future community use.”
Cr Lewis said a temporary portable building would be set up alongside the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, with the toilets and spaces within the gallery to be available to library staff and visitors.
“Limited public computers, printing and Wi-Fi will be housed in the art gallery café space across the road, while adult and children’s programs will continue to be offered
at alternative venues such as the art gallery, parks and the University of Sunshine Coast campus.”

One of the simplest and most effective ways to boost your retirement savings is by contributing a bit extra from your before-tax income into your super account. By making voluntary personal contributions, you not only increase your super balance but may also be eligible to claim a tax deduction, providing an immediate benefit.
If you have unused concessional contribution amounts from previous financial years and your super balance is less than $500,000, you have the opportunity to make a carry-forward contribution. This strategy can prove advantageous, especially if you have higher-than-usual earnings this year and wish to offset your income.
In addition to concessional contributions, non-concessional super strategies can provide another avenue to boost your retirement savings. If you have spare cash, received an inheritance, or have personal savings, voluntary non-concessional contributions can be a great solution. These contributions are made from your savings or income you have already paid tax on, and they enter your super account tax-free.
Downsizer contributions are also worth considering if you’re aged 55 and over and plan to sell your home. The rules allow you to contribute up to $300,000 ($600,000 for a couple) from the proceeds of your home sale. This can be a significant opportunity to supercharge your retirement savings and achieve your financial goals.
Making extra contributions before the end of the financial year not only boosts your retirement savings but can also potentially reduce your tax bill. Concessional contributions are taxed at only 15%, which is often lower than your marginal tax rate. By taking advantage of the concessional contributions option, you benefit from paying less tax compared to receiving the money as normal income.
To ensure you make the most of your contributions while staying within the limits, consult with a professional financial adviser. They can provide personalised guidance based on your financial situation and goals, helping you navigate the complex world of superannuation and make informed decisions.
Take control of your retirement savings today. At RetireInvest, we are here to explore the best strategies to maximise your superannuation contributions before the end of the financial year. Ensure you are super ready for EOFY, and speak with Kathy, Genevieve, and Nathan today to discuss the right strategy to set you on the path to a financially secure future.
Superannuation has been a hot topic of discussion recently, so as we approach the end of the financial year, it’s worthwhile considering different strategies to top up your super and maximise your contributions. Waiting until the last minute may cause you to miss out on valuable opportunities. Here we share some key insights to help you make the most of your retirement savings.
WITH the recent introduction of sleepbus to the community, the homeless issue is slowly being addressed and supported. There have been two women that have been supporting the homeless for many years.
Josie and Trish, the dedicated minds behind J&T Supporting Homeless, have become beacons of hope for the homeless community during a mounting housing crisis and a lack of affordable options on the Fraser Coast.
Their unwavering commitment to providing food and essential items addresses immediate needs and fuels a crucial fight for more secure, safe and affordable housing options.
As the cost-ofliving soars and affordable homes become scarce, homelessness has sadly become a harsh reality for many.
Recognising the pressing need for action, Josie and Trish have stepped up to provide sustenance and support to
those most affected by this crisis.
Through J&T Supporting Homeless, they offer a lifeline with nourishing meals that ensure no one goes hungry in the community. But their impact goes beyond food provision. Josie and Trish tirelessly collect and distribute essential items, understanding the significance of hygiene products and warm clothing for the well-being and
dignity of those experiencing homelessness.
What sets Josie and Trish apart is their personal touch. They take the time to listen to the stories and struggles of homeless individuals, offering a compassionate ear, forging friendships, providing much needed emotional support and a sense of belonging.
J&T’s work creates a ripple effect in the community, inspiring others to get involved, fostering unity and shared responsibility. Through their advocacy, Josie and Trish raise awareness about the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness, breaking stereotypes and promoting understanding. In these uncertain times, where housing insecurity looms large, let us celebrate Josie and Trish for their selfless work through J&T. They embody the true spirit of community, reminding us that by joining together, we can build a future where everyone has access to life’s necessities.

HERVEY Bay has produced some very strong netballers in recent years and the future looks bright with 11 year old Bella-Maree Latoa.
Bella is a Student Leader at Yarrilee State School and has been selected in the Wide Bay Schools Under 12 Netball Team to represent the region at the Queensland State Championships carnival in Caloundra from June 1st. This carnival will have some of the best 10-12 year old future netballers stars in the state competing over a four day carnival.
After playing in a two day Wide Bay Trials for the Hervey Bay Schools Netball representative team, she was selected for the Wide Bay team along with two other Hervey Bay team members – Luca Tomekovic and Emerson Frainey.
“She was just thrilled”, says her mum Delia Davis. “She has worked really hard and was so excited to be selected for the region.”
Bella plays for local club Bay Bullets in Division 7, and comes from a family of sporting talent. Her father has played rugby league and her older sisters also play
representative netball for Hervey Bay.
The Yarrilee student has a very busy year ahead as Netball is not the only sport she excels at. She has a passion for many sports, recently trialling for the AFL Wide Bay representative team and was selected to play in the Possibles and Probables squad.
Bella also represented Hervey
Bay in Oztag at the QLD Junior State cup earlier this year and will be travelling to Townsville at the end of June to represent Hervey Bay Netball Association u12 at QLD Junior State Age. Hervey Bay continues to produce highly talented sports stars and Bella is another example of the talent our region has.
Speedy’s journey began in the grazing town of Blackall, located in Central Western Queensland, back in 1960. Being the eldest sister of eight siblings, Marj (as she is better known) carried a significant amount of responsibility in her family. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when two of her brothers passed away, one at just two months old.
Marj takes great pride in her Aboriginal heritage. Her father’s side connects her to the Kooma Nation, situated near Bollon, along the banks of Wallam Creek. On her mother’s side, she is part of the Jarowair mob, hailing from Toowoomba. Embracing her dual heritage, Marj holds strong connections to both mobs.
During her childhood, Marj’s family frequently relocated as her father worked on mustering stations. This transient lifestyle meant attending various schools. Marj vividly recalls the hardships they faced during their time in Orange, where financial struggles were a daily reality. She remembers attending school with cardboard-soled shoes, a testament to the difficulties her family endured. In those days, many Aboriginal workers did not receive cash wages; instead, her father received a sheep as payment. Providing for and clothing eight children under such circumstances was an immense challenge. Marj cherished her primary school experience, but her enthusiasm waned when she reached high school.
Consequently, at the age of fourteen years and nine months, she legally left school midway through grade nine. Following her departure, Marj was sent to Mrs Weller’s Secretarial Coaching College in Toowoomba, a common path for Aboriginal girls at the time. It was there that she acquired valuable skills in shorthand and typing, skills that would prove useful throughout her life. Marj’s father was a hard worker but an alcoholic. He was the family’s primary breadwinner until her parent’s separation. Years later, a heart scare prompted her father to quit drinking for good. Despite their separation, her parents never divorced, and in later years, they expressed their love for each other following her

mother’s passing in 1999.
Marj’s mother was a trailblazer in her own right. She had Irish ancestry, along with fair skin, red hair, and freckles. She played an instrumental role in establishing the Aboriginal legal service and housing company in Toowoomba alongside other relatives.
In 1999, feeling exhausted and worn out from her life in Toowoomba, Marj and her two sons decided to embark on a fresh start. They randomly drew the name of a town from a hat, and fate led them to Hervey Bay. Thus, Marj and her sons packed up their belongings and embraced the new beginnings that awaited them in the coastal town.
Throughout her life, Marj has held various secretarial
positions, including a stint at the Brisbane Tribal Council. It was through her son’s primary school that she connected with a lady serving on the management committee of the Wide Bay Women’s Health Centre. They were actively seeking a trainee, and Marj secured the position. Nearly twenty-three years have passed since she joined the centre, where she has made a significant impact.
Marj also earned a Diploma in Aboriginal Family and Community Counselling from the University in Armadale, Western Australia.
Today, Marj is the proud mother of three grown children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Reflecting on the past, she recounts the cruelty her
younger sister endured, as she was mocked and referred to as “blacky” due to her darker skin tone. In the present, Marj acknowledges the increasing awareness surrounding Aboriginal people and culture. Today, Aboriginal children can proudly embrace their heritage, openly discussing it at school—a stark contrast to Marj’s own experience, where such conversations were taboo.
In a few more years, Marj will be retiring and would like to go bush to stay with her family in their little cottage in Ballandean and write a book about her life. Marj has had an interesting and challenging life with many twists and turns. Her book will be a real pageturner.
