Article published in the Hervey Bay Advertiser (2 May ’24) highlighting the “serious questions over the environmental impact of the proposed Hervey Bay Esplanade Resort” raised by CoralWatch was a wake-up call for the entire community!
The significance, high likelihood and longterm consequences of these impacts clearly warrant detailed and well-informed debate within the wider community, especially as they conflict with the reasons many have chosen to live here and others to visit.
This was not evident in the response from the developers (published 16 May ‘24) claiming it will “showcase
AS POSSIBLY one of the world’s worst golfers, I had a blast at the recent Fraser Coast Mates Golf Day at the Hervey Bay Golf Club.
In my line of work, we’re always up to something—sponsoring events, joining in the fun, or lending our marketing magic to support awesome local causes. That’s the kind of community vibe that still rings true in our little part of the world.
This was the eighth Fraser Coast Mates Golf Day, and I am told it was the biggest and most successful yet.
Prime Agents proudly took on the role of major sponsor along with a host of associate sponsors and generous donors.
environmental excellence” and “feature a raft of best practice environmental measures” to minimise environmental impacts; statements not substantiated with sound factual evidence that is required for informed debate within the community.
For example, what constitutes “environmental excellence” and by what criteria was it assessed? What evidence confirms that top-end accommodation “attracting new high spending tourists” will genuinely “help ease pressure on the Hervey Bay housing market” and benefit those in need of affordable housing?
Claims that the project “will be a showcase of sustainable development” need to
be substantiated by both qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding the criteria commonly used for assessing “sustainability”, including (but not limited to) economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection (United Nations).
Promotions marketing these types of developments invariably make claims that they will benefit local economies and generate employment. What evidence has been made publicly available to substantiate these claims?
• What types and how many new jobs will be created?
• How many will be available to local residents?
• What proportion of the jobs created will be permanent versus temporary, such as only
Fraser Coast Mates is a fantastic local group focused on spreading the word about mental wellness and preventing suicide among men and women in our community.
They’re all about building a network of buddies who look out for each other, knowing that sometimes we all need a little help.
The day was a smashing success, raising over $40,000. That is simply incredible and will fund up to four-hundred counselling sessions.
Before moving to Hervey Bay, I spent fifteen years in another boom city, Ipswich.
As a media operator there, I had a front row seat to that city’s incredible growth and change. Now Hervey Bay is in the frame as one of the top
required during construction?
• Once the resort is operational, what proportion of income generated will be returned to the local economy?
The community in Hervey Bay have a right to access information used to support the cases for and against this development that is detailed, comprehensive, thorough, factual, evidencebased and from credentialed sources. The developers commissioned the services of Trend Environmental Consultants to report on the environmental impacts and corresponding mitigation strategies. Information available online states that this “consultancy work(s) with land developers, the mining sector, the tourism sector” and
five cities in the country for people on the move. Hervey Bay is home to some truly amazing local projects like Fraser Coast Mates, Dunga Derby, Red Bike, and the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, just to name a few.
As we ride the wave of growth, it’s super important to keep our community spirit alive and kicking. Supporting these grassroots events and initiatives is key—they do such valuable work and need our ongoing love and backing.
Every great city knows how to grow while still cherishing the little things that matter most.
Hervey Bay’s got that enviable community spirit, and it’s up to us to keep it strong as we forge ahead.
“offer environmental approval and compliance monitoring services to the resource sector”.
The significant risks associated with this project warrant a detailed and comprehensive investigation across all of the sustainability assessment criteria that is more appropriately conducted by independent experts as opposed to those hired and paid by the developer.
Most importantly, recent “Letters to the Editor” in The Hervey Bay Advertiser indicate the high potential for this project to become a very divisive issue within our community, especially when the only information readily available is rumour and speculation via social media broadcasts without the benefit
of “fact-checks”.
The development is such a radical departure from what currently exists on our foreshore as well as what we had assumed for the future that it has given rise to genuine fears within the community that if the current Town Plan specifications are over-ridden to approve this development, then it will inevitably and irreversibly set a precedent for similar developments along our coastline. This would be disastrous!
The Gold Coast, and closely followed by the Sunshine Coast, clearly demonstrate how these types of developments radically transform the aesthetics, environs and lifestyles for the local residents, prompting
many to escape by migrating northwards.
Those local Councils that have rejected this type of development, such as Noosa, Byron Bay and Port Douglas, are currently and will continue to reap the benefits of being desired premier destinations for holidaymakers as well as those looking for somewhere to live that is different and special.
These Councils courageously withstood pressures from developers and reasserted their key and executive roles and responsibility for determining the future of their communities.
Opposition to this project is not simply anti-development; it is about ensuring developments are “right” for Hervey Bay’s residents and not just profitable business ventures for developers.
Given the significance of this project in influencing the nature and extent of developments in Hervey Bay in the future, leadership is required from the Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC) in sponsoring open and informed debate about this proposal within the community.
There is too much at stake for it not to be subject to rigorous scrutiny through robust and balanced discussion and debate within the wider community that is based upon a detailed and comprehensive assessment
of all available relevant information from credentialed sources.
The FCRC has a key role to play in sponsoring this process given that they have the ultimate decision whether or not to approve the development application.
We need the FCRC councillors, in consultation with the wider community, to determine the future of Hervey Bay and not leave it to foreign interests seeking profitable investments.
The FCRC prepares a Development Plan to guide future directions. This name implies that development will continue to be the driver into the future and that it is necessary to respond to the rapid increase in the population anticipated for Hervey Bay.
This is not the only available option. Continuing growth is not a solution that is sustainable in the longterm.
What is more important and relevant would be for the FCRC to create a “Sustainable Future Plan” for Hervey Bay that articulates a future for this town that is not based upon the continued urban sprawl that is currently being rolled out.
Is this the legacy by which councillors wish to be remembered?
New development will
always happen, but it is up to our elected officials to make sure that any development doesn’t drastically affect the properties and well-being of the Hervey Bay ratepayers.
By this, I mean setting a precedent on the height of the beachfront development.
I for one would not like to see a wall of 20 story or taller buildings along the short beachfront that we all enjoy.
As for injecting money into the Bay, yes tradies will have to stay and eat and with the housing shortage this will be in direct competition with our tourists.
On the build, contracts will go to the one who can supply workers and equipment and probably price.
This puts Hervey Bay tradies out as it’s hard enough to get one for our own jobs.
Sales will go to flashy sales teams working out of Sydney but a few crumbs for the local realities.
The developer, well he doesn’t have to live behind it or gamble his money, it’s all investors.
He just has to sweet talk our elected officials to get the build as high as he can as that means more profits.
It’s not about helping the Bay it’s about profit, so I hope our elected officials listen to the community and are not spellbound by the glossy prospectus or next we will be getting a monorail.
MINOR building renovations, mowing equipment, new computers and lighting upgrades are among the projects supported under the latest rounds of Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Community Grants program.
Communities spokesperson Cr Michelle Govers said Council approved more than $117,000 in grants to assist 27 local community groups and not-for-profit organisations under the third and fourth rounds of the 2023/24 Community Grants program.
“Council’s grant scheme offers a range of opportunities for groups to apply for funding for projects and events that help ensure we have a vibrant, resilient, connected and
inclusive community,” she said.
“We are pleased to be able to support community groups to develop their facilities and events, with our grants helping deliver community projects with a total value of more than $318,000.”
Due to the local government elections in March and Council being in caretaker mode in this period, rounds
three and four of the 2023/24 Community Grants program have been combined.

THE INSTALLATION of traffic lights and an upgrade of the intersection of Boundary Road, Hughes Road and Robert Street in Hervey Bay is progressing on schedule as the project moves to the next stage.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Roads spokesman Denis Chapman said that from August, the northern end of Hughes Road between Windemere Road and Boundary Road will be closed to northbound traffic as works continue.
“For the next six months, access to the Boundary Oasis Corner Store will be altered, causing some disruption for customers and staff,” he said.
“To help minimise disruption for the corner store, Council is providing a temporary driveway for customers, putting up signage to guide them and establishing a
car park north of
Road.
“We appreciate that these works will cause some inconvenience, but the end result will be a safer intersection and improved travel times.”
Cr John Weiland said work began earlier this year to install traffic lights and upgrade the roads and footpaths around one of Hervey Bay’s busiest intersections.
“This intersection services three schools – Urangan High, Sandy Straits State School, Star of the Sea Primary School, as well as three childcare centres,” he said.
“Power lines and electrical infrastructure were relocated in the first two stages of the upgrade in 2021. The traffic signalisation works are the third and final stage of the $9.5m project, partly funded by
the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme ($123,263).”
Cr Weiland said the intersection upgrade was especially important given work on the Boundary Road extension to Urraween Road will be finished within weeks, creating a second major eastwest route through Hervey Bay linking the airport and the medical precinct.
“Once completed in March 2025, the upgraded intersection at the corner of Boundary Road, Hughes Road and Robert Street will be more than twice as wide as it was, helping cater for future growth,” he said.
“Council is committed to planning for the future and investing in high-quality public infrastructure to keep pace with growth, and that’s what this project seeks to achieve.”
This is your chance to celebrate the accomplishments of people with disability and the individuals and organisations who support them.

FRASER Coast dog owners are being reminded to keep their pets under control after Council recently successfully prosecuted a local dog owner for multiple breaches of local and state animal management laws.
Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said having a pet comes with commitments and serious responsibilities.
“Responsible pet ownership is crucial for the safety and well-being of our community and dog owners must maintain proper control of their pets at all times to keep themselves, their pets, other members of the community and other animals safe,” he said.
“Council recently took legal action against a local dog owner following repeated complaints that his two dogs were wandering and displaying dangerous and menacing behaviour.
“Council was successful in its action, with the owner found guilty of five offences, ranging from failing to maintain a proper enclosure to prevent an animal from wandering or escaping to failing to take reasonable steps to ensure a dog does not attack or cause fear.
“The court imposed a single penalty for the five charges of $3,500, with the owner also ordered to pay legal costs of $2,607.30.
“Council receives hundreds of reports every year of wandering dogs and dog attacks. We take these reports seriously, and we will take legal action when necessary.”
Cr Truscott said the Queensland Government had recently updated animal management laws which meant irresponsible owners of dogs that attack and cause serious injury or death can now face jail terms of up to three years and fines up to $108,000.
won’t be tolerated. Your dog is your responsibility, and the consequences of ignoring this can be costly,” he said.
“Dog owners need to ensure their pets do not endanger other animals or people, or roam outside their property. If dogs leave the property, they must be on a lead or be supervised in off-leash areas.
OUTDOOR LIVING SPECIALISTS
“All dogs must be registered with Council from 12 weeks of age and be microchipped before 12 weeks of age. Making sure your pet is registered and microchipped will help ensure your pet is returned home quickly if it happens to escape the yard.”
“Our message to the community is simple – these types of animal behaviours

PIONEERING family-run laundry business, Consolidated Linen Service (CLS), is expanding its innovative operations with support from the Australian Business Growth Fund (ABGF).
ABGF’s investment in CLS will help it expand its operations. CLS partners with hundreds of businesses and employs hundreds of Queenslanders.
Serving over 700 customers, CLS handles 400 tonnes of textiles weekly across regional Queensland, keeping items like restaurant tablecloths and mining uniforms clean.
With a $6 million investment from ABGF, CLS aims to grow and innovate. Managing Director Adam Roberts, son of founder Neville Roberts, said, “Now is the right time to bring in an investor so we are further
equipped to meet market demand.”
Founded in 1990, CLS has expanded from one laundry to four facilities in Hervey Bay, Whitsundays, Gladstone, and Rockhampton, employing nearly 300 people, including many from diverse backgrounds.
Adam and his brother, Group General Manager Tom Roberts, have extensive industry experience and have consistently delivered high-quality laundry services.
“That’s why iconic islands and resorts have trusted CLS for two decades,” Adam Roberts said.
The Roberts brothers’ understanding of local needs and long-term industry experience makes CLS stand out. “We’ve been part of this business for over 34 years,
learning from our father and bringing our ideas to the table. Family dinners often focus on how we can wash more, faster, and smarter.”
CLS’ success also comes from Adam and Tom’s pioneering approach. They have designed unique laundry solutions, including AI and robotics, increasing output and fault detection while reducing health risks.
“Since joining the business, Tom and I have focused on improving systems, cutting costs, prolonging machine life, reducing chemical usage, improving environmental outcomes, and enhancing safety,” Adam Roberts said.
ABGF supports growing Australian businesses like CLS, which has shown consistent growth since its inception.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) are working in partnership with the three private hospitals across the region, securing additional beds and reinforcing our commitment to quality care.
In Bundaberg, WBHHS have engaged partnerships with two private hospitals. The Friendly Society Private Hospital and the Mater Hospital have each committed a total 30 beds to support our efforts. This strategic alliance are assisting in providing additional inpatient beds to ensure patients receive the right care in the right place to receive highquality care.
Catherine
said Mater had a strong track record of working with WBHSS to deliver care to the community.
“This new partnership builds on the very close relationship we already have with our HHS colleagues,” Ms Hackney said.
“As a not-for-profit hospital, our mission is to support the health of the community and we are ready to provide public patients with exceptional care as and when required.
“So far we have cared for patients with a range of conditions, and care needs and look forward to continuing this work.”
Chief Executive of the Friendlies
Michelle Thompson expressed her enthusiasm for the new partnership in the Bundaberg and Wide Bay Region.
“We are delighted to be participating in the provision of collaborative care to the Bundaberg and Wide Bay Region,” she said.
“This model not only goes to the very heart of our mission but, more importantly, strengthens and enhances our bed capacity and joint hospital capabilities to meet the expanding community’s needs.
“We look forward to fostering further collaborative opportunities with WBHHS, including the sharing of our health resources and healthcare professionals’ expertise. We are stronger together.”

“The focus at St Stephen’s has always been on making great care accessible closer to home for the people of our region. That’s why we’re proud to play a part in this program which ultimately helps to expand and improve timely access to our local healthcare services.”
“We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with our health colleagues across the Wide Bay to benefit those who need our care and our regional healthcare system
“In the first month of the partnership, through 16 beds, St Stephen’s has already been able to provide care for more than 80 public patients requiring admission to hospital,” he said.
These partnerships exemplify our commitment to a unified approach in addressing healthcare demands across the region.
The integration of these additional beds across Bundaberg and Hervey Bay represents a proactive step towards managing the increasing healthcare demands.
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said these collaborative efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure that our
communities have access to the best possible healthcare services.
“We remain dedicated to exploring further opportunities to enhance healthcare delivery,” she said.
“Together, we are making strides towards a healthier future for Bundaberg and Hervey Bay, demonstrating that through collaboration and shared vision, we can achieve remarkable outcomes for our communities.
“I am extremely grateful to the kind and hard-working staff at these hospitals who take excellent care of our patients.
“These collaborations are set to bolster our capacity to meet the health needs of our communities effectively.”

FOR AS long as we can remember, there has always been a trending “magic pill” for weight loss. In the past, we’ve seen methods like Duromine, fad diets, and more invasive options like stomach surgery, where a sleeve or part of the stomach is removed. Currently, it’s Ozempic grabbing the spotlight.
Ozempic, an injectable medication, is primarily prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes by helping regulate blood sugar levels. It also promotes weight loss, which is beneficial for diabetes patients. However, this secondary effect has led to its off-label use for weight loss by those who do not have diabetes.
This is written with no shame or judgement, but genuine concern about how many people are now using this drug for weight loss without the necessary knowledge to maintain good health. I 100 percent agree – being overweight carries significant issues: heart disease, depression, and a higher risk of cancer.
It’s crucial to understand that weight management is a lifetime commitment.
While fad diets often lead to temporary weight loss followed by weight gain, learning how to eat well and nourish your body can help achieve sustainable health.
Regular movement improves cardiovascular, muscular, and mental health. Developing these habits provides strategies to return to, rather than relying on appetite loss caused by medications.
Moreover, Ozempic comes with a black box warning for a high risk of thyroid cancer
observed in animal studies.
This potential side effect raises concerns about the drug’s long-term safety.
One of the significant risks associated with Ozempic use is muscle loss, often overlooked. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial as we age, supporting health, mobility, and metabolism. Losing muscle might contribute to prioritising being skinny over being healthy.
If you choose to use Ozempic, consider these important points:
• Understand how Ozempic works and its potential side effects. Long-term side effects include gastrointestinal issues and an increased risk of thyroid cancer. Always consult healthcare professionals and seek advice from a nutritionist.
• : Adequate protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, especially when losing weight.
• Continue to emphasise a balanced lifestyle. Regular physical activity and a nutritious diet should remain central to your weight loss journey.
• Focus on mental well-being. The pressure to conform to weight loss trends can impact mental health. Ensuring a positive body image and self-esteem is just as important. Remember, health isn’t just about the number on the scale. It’s about overall well-being and longevity. My concern stems from care and the desire to see everyone achieve their health goals in a safe and sustainable manner.

HERVEY Bay faces a critical juncture: if we don’t pivot our focus towards attracting younger generations, we risk severe workforce shortages within the next 20 years.
Our current trajectory, heavily skewed towards catering to retirees, is unsustainable.
As president of the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association, I see firsthand the urgency of this issue.
Post-COVID, our city’s demographics have shifted dramatically.
Our average age has increased from 48 to 51, and a large segment of our workforce is on the brink of retirement.
Key to this reversal is investing in infrastructure that appeals to a younger demographic.
This includes enhancing our nightlife economy, aligning education with job
opportunities, and developing modern, affordable housing.
This impending “retirement cliff” threatens to deplete our labor force, stalling economic growth and innovation.
We must act now to reverse this trend.
Furthermore, we need to reimagine our city’s image. Moving away from being perceived solely as a retiree haven, we must market Hervey Bay as a vibrant, dynamic community with diverse opportunities for all ages.
This paradigm shift requires political will and community support, but the rewards are manifold: a balanced, thriving population and a robust, sustainable economy.
By embracing these changes, we pave the way for a prosperous future for Hervey Bay.
Let’s build a city that not only supports our current residents but also attracts and nurtures the talent of tomorrow.
The time to act is now.
Such infrastructure not only attracts young professionals but also retains our youth, preventing the brain drain that has plagued us for years.

NADINE Dodd was born in Brisbane twenty-seven years ago. At the time, her family lived in Ipswich, but when Nadine was about eighteen months old, they packed up and travelled around Australia, eventually settling in Hervey Bay.
As an only child, Nadine gravitated towards her dad, enjoying hanging out with him and playing with boy’s toys.
She remembers always wanting an older brother and feeling that she could never get away with anything.
Nadine had a mixed experience with school. While she enjoyed her early years she preferred hands-on learning with her dad, over high school classes.
Despite her ambivalence, she performed well enough to enter the University of Southern Queensland. Torn between
engineering and nursing she chose nursing appreciating the flexibility and opportunities for travel, and completed a Bachelor of Nursing.
After graduation, Nadine secured a position with Queensland Health, where she worked for several years in hospitals, aged care homes, and rural nursing.
However, she has had her fair share of struggles. Burnout from hospital work led to severe health issues, making her feel like a shell of herself and forcing her to rebuild her physical and mental well-being.
She adopted a routine focused on self-care, including a morning ritual of yoga and regular gratitude exercises, supported by a network of friends. This period of recovery helped Nadine learn to prioritise her health and resilience.
This was a difficult time for
Nadine, she was only in her early twenties, and up until that point she had been working hard and had even bought her first house.
Reflecting on this period, she says, “Having the right people around me, but also, having my own back too was what got me through. Even though I had all these things going against me, I knew I just had to rise above them.”
Nadine knew she needed a change and considered travelling with her nursing career but instead found an opportunity to franchise Nurse Next Door on the Fraser Coast. Now, she leads a team of 35-40 people, running clinical operations while her mother, Sue, handles accounting and administrative tasks.
Nadine loves tinkering with cars, a pastime that began in childhood when she assisted her dad with tools
and learned basic car maintenance. She enjoys four-wheel driving, appreciating the freedom it brings and the opportunity to explore Australia. Alongside her partner, she runs “Endless Weekends,” organising 4WD and car events to raise funds for charities.
This venture began with her parents’ neon sign business, which Nadine transitioned online during the pandemic, combining it with her interest in health products.
The We’ve Got You Foundation was born out of Nadine and her mum’s dedication to the community.
The foundation addresses gaps in healthcare funding, particularly for aged care clients, enabling them to stay in their homes and access medical appointments.
Her commitment to giving back is evident from her involvement in
Nadine’s positive attitude and willingness to take on challenges have been crucial to her
Despite initial fears, she has embraced opportunities and found that her burnout ultimately sparked her journey into health and wellness. She enjoys outdoor activities, including beach walks and car events, and looks forward to welcoming a baby with her partner in September.
Nadine’s message is, “It doesn’t matter where or what you come from, if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.
When it feels like it’s all too much, just look for that light and keep pushing forward. Make sure you have something small to look forward to each day.
