It’s distressing the amount of native habitat lost to clear cutting for property development in Hervey Bay since Covid.

Of course residents want the area to grow and progress - but sustainably please, and with respect to the environment and the entire community.

We live here for the relaxed natural beauty of the beaches, the fishing, the huge shady gum trees filled with wildlife.

A holiday destination, a renowned whale watching hub and access to world

WELL, it’s that time of year again when Spotlight sells out of those googly stick-on eyes and Bunnings does a roaring trade on zip ties. A helmet isn’t just a helmet anymore—it’s a canvas for all sorts of anti-magpie creativity.

Yes, magpie swooping season is upon us, and our feathery (not-so-friendly) friends are out in full force.

Typically kicking off during their breeding season, which can run from August to October and sometimes as late as November, magpies swoop to protect their young and deter potential threats like dogs, cats, and, of course, us unsuspecting pedestrians and cyclists.

heritage listed K’Gari - these are recognised world class, unique, natural gifts of our surrounding environment.

The size of our footprint matters. How we manage our world class destination is critical to our success and opportunity to remain special. Why morph into the next coast mega development and lose it all for short term greed?

We can build six star resorts without destroying Torquay.

Why have height restrictions if the highest bid can win?

The wooded area at the end of the beach in Urangan is already zoned for this type of 20+ story, high density property development

- according to a former councillor. Why then is Torquay being considered?

Wasn’t this Urangan site also identified for high density development by a visiting minister looking for housing options?

Our rates have increased 10% this year, 4% last year. Infrastructure, water and the planning are insufficient to deal with existing population pressures. Where is the forward thinking and long term strategic planning for Hervey Bay? World pressures and supply chains have changed, but our heads remain buried in the same unhelpful strategies

Magpies get especially cranky when their chicks have hatched, swooping anything that comes within about fifty meters of their nests.

This swooping frenzy usually lasts for about six to eight weeks, from the time the eggs are laid until the fledglings leave the nest.

Thankfully, by November, most of the pecking and flapping has settled down.

Interestingly, only about 10% of male magpies actually swoop at people.

This could be due to past bad experiences, making them more likely to go after us if we wander too close.

Personally, I’ve never knowingly offended a

When are we going to hold community planning and property development to a higher standard of environmental and community sustainability?

magpie, but I’ve had my fair share of run-ins and now, for the first time in my life, find myself squarely in that top 10%.

These territorial birds can live for 25 to 30 years and often stay in the same area their entire lives, meaning your local magpie might just be a lifelong neighbour.

So, where are the most infamous magpies in Hervey Bay?.

‘The General’ on the Point Vernon Esplanade pathway is definitely up there.

Got any swooping stories or tips for surviving the season?

I would like to commend the mayor and councillors of past administrations for their vision and foresight for setting the plan to preserve and improve the extensive foreshore and streetscape.

I recall the mammoth task the council undertook to pave the walkway from Gatakers Bay to Urangan, this was a major project for the 1980’s council. Today we benefit from decisions that preserved the tranquillity of the bay without the impact of large scale development of the pristine parkland and surrounds along the coastline.

Resisting the developers who

There’s no pressure like sitting in the Chambers knowing everyone is holding their breath to see how you vote. This month, the Council will vote on the most significant development application of our time. I’ve sat there and while it can be hard to gauge public sentiment, I have learned that just as people are likely to leave a restaurant review if they have a bad experience,

wish to despoil this relaxed and unique appeal of Hervey Bay should be resisted at all costs.

those against an application are always louder online, while the majority in favour scroll by.

So, what will Councillors do?

Are they looking to keep Hervey Bay the same, inevitably landing us in the planning courts at huge expense to the ratepayer, so we likely get the same outcome anyway?

Or are they looking to the future, willing to make real, positive changes to our housing diversity and crisis, tourism, demographic trajectory and be remembered for being courageous and progressive?

As a girl who was born and grew up on the Fraser Coast, I always viewed the council as a pack of old dinosaurs who never let anything good happen here and this was front of mind when I found myself in the decision room albeit as one number and not as the leader.

With many younger Councillors onboard, I hope to see more progression from them and our mayor. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve got.

I urge councillors to read the application in full without bias, condition it appropriately to ensure good outcomes, but not in a way that makes the build

infeasible, and let Hervey Bay thrive.

Dinosaur decisions and/ or crumbling under pressure could send our economy and future prospects extinct and may encourage busy, business-minded people like me to make a return to politics - next time as a leader.

We write to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to Hervey Bay residents and the wider Fraser Coast community for their incredible support towards the proposed Sheraton Resort Hervey Bay at Torquay.

While we understand and appreciate that not everyone is in favour of this development, we are extremely grateful for the overwhelming feedback we have received and thank everyone in the community for their interest in this project and their willingness to participate in the discussion. We have faith that the Councillors are listening to their community and recognise the major economic and social benefits our project will have for this region. This includes a $580 million boost to the economy and tourism, the creation of close to 1,800 new jobs, and providing 430 much-needed new homes. There is no doubt the

Sheraton Resort Hervey Bay will be a catalyst for continued growth and progress that will ensure a long-term and more sustainable and prosperous future for the Bay. We are committed to seeing this project through and creating positive energy the whole community will be proud of.

Once again, thanks so much for all of the support and we look forward to playing our part in a bright future for Fraser Coast.

I was pleased to read the story on page 12 of the H.B. Advertiser of 22 June reporting “the Queensland Government’s tough new dangerous dog laws” which are long overdue.

The only unanswered question now is whether or not the magistrates will do their part, and have the intestinal fortitude and therefore the willingness to impose immediately the harsher penalties provided by this legislation? Or will it be another case of second chances for the owners just because an attacking dog has supposedly never been aggressive before?

I guess we must wait and see when the next inevitable, unfortunate incident happens.

The Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Queensland is pleased to announce Rob Loveday will be presenting Wildlife Resources as the Wildlife Library talk in July.

In the first talk in June, Rob gave us a window into the amazing array of biodiversity

in our world.

In his second talk he will tackle what it means to treat this biodiversity as a resource.

But, what does it mean to us Homo sapiens? How is wildlife a “resource”? Is our wildlife at risk? If it is, should we try to preserve it? Can we?

THE CONSTRUCTION of a new Fraser Coast recycling centre at the Maryborough landfill has reached a significant milestone, with the project now more than halfway through.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Resource Recovery spokesperson Zane O’Keefe said the new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) would be a game-changer for recycling in the region.

“The new MRF in Maryborough will be three times the size of the current facility at Dundowran, which has reached the end of its working life,” he said.

“The new and improved facility will use state-ofthe-art sorting technologies and advanced automation, significantly improving the

efficiency and effectiveness of the recycling process.

“About 20 per cent of the material going through the current MRF ends up in landfill. With the new facility, that could be halved.

“Better separation of different types of recyclables will lead to higher recovery rates and improved quality of recycled materials.

“That opens up opportunities for innovative recycling initiatives, such as the production of park benches from recycled plastic or cat litter from recycled cardboard.”

Cr O’Keefe said construction progress had been rapid in recent months, with the completion of the new building expected by August.

“Once the construction of the building is complete, the

installation of equipment will start, paving the way for the facility’s opening in January 2025,” he said.

“A key feature of the new MRF will be an expanded education room to raise awareness and promote sustainable recycling practices among residents.

“Council is committed to increasing recycling and reducing waste to landfill.

This new MRF will be vital to helping us achieve that goal.”

About 8,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables are processed annually from the kerbside collection of yellow-lid recycling bins, with about half of that a mix of paper and cardboard. Other materials recovered include glass, aluminium and steel.

THE ANNUAL Fraser Coast Mates Golf Day incorporating the popular Flourish Luncheon, was an outstanding success.

The day included the announcement of the winning bid for ex-Olympian Lisa Curry’s 2000 Sydney Olympic torch she donated to the organisation.

Over 400 people attended the Hervey Bay Golf Club to support a stronger awareness for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention while also to play for the Geoff Redpath Memorial Trophy.

The Flourish Luncheon had a surprise guest for the day, with Lisa Curry attending and her professional dancer daughter Morgan Gruell entertaining the ladies.

At the final presentations for the day, it was announced the Walter Iezzi Property Group had made a successful bid for the iconic Olympic memorabilia of $10,000 that will fund counselling support for locals.

The Walter Iezzi Property Group is the developer for the eight-storey Topaz Shelley Beach project, a luxury beachfront apartment living complex to begin construction soon on the Hervey Bay Esplanade.

The Sunshine Coast based developer was made aware of the auction through a friendship with Lisa Curry and was instantly interested in registering a bid.

Helen Inman, Walter Iezzi Property Group Hervey Bay Sales Executive, says they were honoured to support Fraser Coast Mates.

“We’re thrilled to have created a partnership with Fraser Coast Mates and it’s an honour to support their important work”, says Helen. Fraser Coast Mates president Darren Bosley says the generous support will provide counselling for people who reach out to the organisation, particularly in urgent times.

“So often we hear instances of someone suffering in silence with mental illness and unsure of the steps to

take for help” Mr. Bosley said. “There are very important services available that we aim to introduce people to and begin their journey to find the right tools for their individual wellbeing”.

It was an emotional final presentation with the announcement and the Geoff Redpath Memorial Trophy being awarded to his sons for the first time, Zac and Lucas Redpath.

The day was further celebrated by Fraser Coast Mates with another $40,000 raised from the event that continues to grow in numbers each year.

Z-PAC Theatre is thrilled to announce its latest production, “Children of the Black Skirt,” an Australian Gothic Horror play.

This compelling play retells the harrowing stories of children from convict times through early white occupation, the Stolen Generation, World War II, and beyond.

The narrative follows three children who discover an abandoned orphanage. By donning the clothing of previous inhabitants, they become storytellers of the ghosts and spirits of the past.

This unique storytelling method brings history to life, allowing the audience to experience the trials and triumphs of these children through the ages.

Director Katanee Draheim shared her excitement about the production, stating, “It’s been an incredible journey directing something like this. Not only does it touch on reallife issues that impact many people we may come across today, but it also tells a story of people making it through hardships and having their story told.”

Draheim also praised the young cast, adding, “It’s been a delight to work with the 15 kids in the cast and

crew. Each of them has such a passion, excitement, and talent for theatre. Working collaboratively with them on this project has stretched us all creatively but in the best of ways.”

Abby Franks, who plays Old One, expressed her enthusiasm, “It’s so amazing that I get to share my culture with everyone. This play shows the good and the bad of what it was like to be an Aboriginal person back in the day.”

Juniper Canning, who plays Lucy, added, “It’s been a great opportunity for young people like us to share a creative experience and celebrate Australian heritage.”

Noah Byrne, playing Inspector Horrocks, remarked,

“I’ve loved working with such an amazing cast and crew on such a beautiful script!!”

Shakira Bourgonje, who portrays Mrs Connell, said “This is definitely one of the most challenging plays I’ve worked on, but I’m grateful that I had a wonderful cast and crew to work alongside and bring this amazing story to life.”

“Children of the Black Skirt” runs from 9-25 August, across three weekends. To secure your seat, visit zpactheatre.com.au. For group bookings, contact Secretary Helen at 0427 225 008 or email bookings@ zpactheatre.com.au.

CHRISTMAS PARTIES

ROSE Overton-Locke and her mother Jasmine Overton are on the path to achieving their joint goal of running their own beauty salon together, with the duo both on track to complete a Certificate III in Nail Technology at TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay campus.

For 16-year-old Rose, a career in the beauty industry was on the cards for as long as she can remember.

“When I was much younger, I used to play with my mum’s makeup and get dressed up,” Rose recalls.

“Then I started getting my own makeup – that’s when my passion really started to take off. I just love the fact that you can express yourself in any way you like.”

Keen to kick-start her career, Rose enrolled in a Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics through TAFE at School, before transitioning into a Certificate III in Beauty Services, which she completed in 2023.

Witnessing her daughter thrive in the hands-on learning environment, Jasmine said she felt inspired to follow suit and see what all the fuss was about by undertaking study of her own.

“Seeing her passion and dedication sparked my own interest, leading me to enrol to study a Certificate II in Salon Assistant,” Jasmine said.

“It’s been a lot of fun to learn new skills and upskill – I’m in my 40s

and I realised that it doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s never too late to learn something new and take a different path.”

It was during this time the pair decided to take their tandem study journey a step further and enrol in a Certificate III in Nail Technology together at TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay campus.

“I find studying with Rose fun – I get to spend lots of time with her before she leaves home and we also help each other along the way and motivate each other.”

“I feel the same,” Rose adds, “I like hanging out with Mum. She’s

not a strict mum, she’s a cool mum, and it’s great to have this quality time.”

Both Jasmine and Rose said it’s an experience they are glad to have had, with the facilities, teachers and practical nature of the course boosting their confidence and preparing them for their next step in the industry.

The pair are set to graduate in July, and are looking forward to continuing their journey in the industry side-by-side, putting their newfound skills to use by building their own business.

SINCE its inception in July 2021, Bub Hub has been more than just a program; it’s become a lifeline for young parents, offering guidance, support, and a sense of community in the often overwhelming journey of parenthood.

For one young couple, Shannon O’Brien and Nick Simpson, attending Bub Hub with their daughter from day one has been transformative.

What began as a quest for parenting resources quickly evolved into something much deeper.

Shannon, having studied Certificate III in Childcare and worked at Milestones Daycare, recognised the value of a supportive network. Inviting a high school friend, with whom she shared a history of childcare experiences, proved to be the catalyst for expanding that network.

It was at Bub Hub that this duo encountered another young parent they had known for years but never truly connected with until now.

Through shared experiences and the common ground of navigating parenthood, their bond deepened, blossoming into a genuine friendship. Together, they found solace in

knowing they were not alone in their journey.

Attending Bub Hub wasn’t just about acquiring knowledge; it was about building connections.

These newfound friendships brought not only emotional support but also practical advice and shared experiences.

The young couple found their confidence in parenting bolstered, as they exchanged tips, vented frustrations, and celebrated milestones together.

As fate would have it, the bonds formed at Bub Hub extended beyond the realm of parenting.

And as they plan their wedding for August, it’s no surprise that they’ve chosen to have both newfound friends stand beside them as bridesmaids.

Bub Hub isn’t just a program; it’s a community, a support system, and a beacon of hope for young parents navigating the often turbulent waters of raising children. It’s where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and memories are made. And for this young couple, it’s been nothing short of life-changing.

Coal royalties help to pay for cost-of-living support like electricity rebates and free kindy. They also help pay for infrastructure and services. the impact of land valuation increases and increased pensioner rates concessions are among the key features of the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s 2024/25 budget.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said this year’s budget was challenging, with Council determined to remain financially sustainable while also delivering the services and infrastructure the community needs now and into the future.

“As every household or business knows, everything is costing more. Council has had the double whammy of increased costs and reduced government grants,” he said.

“Our expenses are increasing

much more than the inflation rate due to the specific types of goods and services we need. For example, the cost of building a road has nearly doubled.

“Despite these challenges, Council remains focused on delivering essential services like water, waste and roads as efficiently as possible, effectively managing and maintaining our assets, and planning for the future to meet the unique needs of our rapidly growing community.

“To assist the most vulnerable in our community, Council is increasing the pensioner rates concession from $175 a year to $200 a year.

“We’ve also almost halved our residential rates cap. With land

valuations going up an average of 38 per cent on the Fraser Coast this year, halving the residential rates cap will lessen the impact of land valuations on general rate increases.

“Council has 55 different rating categories so the changes to rates bills vary from property to property.

“For the vast majority of residential homes, the increase to the total bill – including general rates, levies, and water and waste charges where applicable – will be between $2.15 and $7.42 a week.”

Cr Truscott said Council’s total budget would be $477 million in 2024/25, which included $190 million in capital works projects.

I ATTENDED my first State Budget on 11th June 2024 as AMA Queensland President.

As I entered Queensland Parliament House, there was a sense of anticipation in the air.

The Honourable Cameron Dick presented the budget to key stakeholders prior to the public announcement, it was evident that cost of living, youth crime, housing and health featured quite heavily.

As a doctor, my key interest was the budget for healthcare.

After a relatively lukewarm Federal health budget, it was pleasing to see investment from the Queensland State Government into healthcare.

There is a growth of 10.6 per cent in operating funding in 2024-25, which is much needed given our growing and aging population.

There is funding allocated to the tune of $2.167 billion to improve hospital and health infrastructure.

Over $1 billion has put aside to improve flow of patients through our hospitals and to improve bed capacity.

Whilst this allocation is welcome, we also must ensure that there is an appropriately trained and sufficiently staffed workforce in our healthcare system.

I am happy to report that the Queensland Government has implemented AMA Queensland recommendations to incentivise doctors to train in General Practice.

$40 000 will be allocated to GP trainees from 2025, which will be a significant boost and allows our state to

compete with our southern counterparts.

We require a strong and functional Primary Healthcare sector, this will allow access for patients, to keep patients well and to keep patients out of hospital.

It is pleasing to see the continued investment into immunisations including: - free Meningococcal B and Respiratory Syncytial Virus vaccines for eligible infants, children and adolescents

- continuation of the free influenza vaccination for all Queenslanders

There has been significant funding to increase our health workforce. This includes:

- $265.9 million over 4 years to enable recruitment of 188 ambulance operatives and 80 specialised positions

- Additional $158.4 million over 4 years in new funding to focus on supporting and retaining the current workforce Investment is noted in the Women and Girls’ Health Strategy, which is welcome. However, we need to ensure these programs do not fragment healthcare which ultimately leads to increased costs to the healthcare system. The devil is in the detail, and we will continue examine this budget. I feel that we require an immediate injection of funds to clear the current logjam of elective surgery, so we’re not constantly chasing our tail. This is an election year, and we will be looking at the policies and promises from both sides of politics.

TIME TO SEE THE FRIENDLY TEAM AT BLUE SKY DENTAL

THE HERVEY Bay RSL Seagulls have just launched their all new all girls league competition named the Seagals.

The club saw a niche in the market for an all girls competition since they saw a lot of girls come and go from the sport.

Junior President Chris Nash said, “I have seen a lot of girls join the sport but then get injured or they didn’t feel comfortable playing alongside the boys, therefore choose to leave the sport.”

“As a region we have struggled getting enough players to join the under 13 girls, this got us thinking of ways to overcome this hurdle.”

“In having a conversation with Danny Blair from the

NRL Dolphins he made the suggestion of starting a mini all girls competition within the younger grades.”

“We put out an expression of interest and the feedback was incredible.”

“With that the Seagals was born.”

“The girls will play with their very own Seagals shirt. We kept the traditional Seagulls pattern but put the Seagals pink twist on it.”

Along with the clubs sponsors the club have had a lot of support from the clubs committee members, parents, Danny Blair from the NRL Dolphins and Rugby League Fraser Coast.

“With this being the first all girls mini mods program in Queensland, I feel it really is

the future for our junior rugby league girls, not only here in Hervey Bay but all over Queensland.”

“We have approximately 120 players registered to play in the new all girls comp and the best part is 70% of these girls have never played rugby league before.”

The Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls hopes that programs like this will be happening in clubs all over Queensland to boost the future of the sport for girls.

The competition will run for five weeks starting on the 26th of July each Friday night at Ralph Starford Park. All training and games will be held on the same night across the five weeks.

PARALYMPIAN Ellie Cole will be in Hervey Bay this month to promote inclusivity in sport as part of the first Fraser Coast All-Inclusive Sports Festival.

Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said Ellie Cole would be coming to Hervey Bay to talk to clubs and residents on how to better include people with disability in mainstream sports and enhance the skills of our local sporting groups.

“Having had her leg amputated when she was just three years old due to cancer, Ellie understands firsthand the challenges that people with disability encounter, and we eagerly await her suggestions for making sports more inclusive in our region,” he said.

Cr John Weiland said being inclusive in sport wasn’t just about installing ramps, it was also about adopting inclusive programmes, better training for volunteers and providing adaptive equipment.

The sports festival also includes a ‘Day on the Field Pt2’ which will be held on Friday, September 20 where sporting clubs will showcase their activities, giving participants the opportunity to try out different sports

and speak directly with club representatives.

“This festival offers a hands-on experience and fosters collaboration among local schools, sports clubs and organisations, united by a shared enthusiasm for inclusive sports.” Cr Weiland said.

“The All-Inclusive Sports Festival is a new initiative, with Council partnering with APM Communities to deliver a series of events.

“APM is the ideal partner for this festival due to their expertise in disability services.

They provide valuable resources and information on inclusive sports and have sporting professionals who can share insights.”

Friday, September 20 – A Day on the Field Pt2Showcasing local clubs. FREE Event.

Hervey Bay Sports Club, 133 Tavistock Street, Torquay. From 9am – 1pm. The canteen will be open for refreshments. You can find out more and register for the above event here: https://bit.ly/ InclusiveSportsFestival.

TRENT Faunt, one of the youngest real estate principals on the Fraser Coast, is quickly establishing a remarkable reputation with his fresh and innovative approach to sales and property management.

Recently, Trent and his wife Karlie acquired Century 21 Real Estate, further expanding their interests and strengthening their commitment to being a formidable presence in the Fraser Coast property market for years to come.

“I see massive potential in the market here and the way Hervey Bay is growing as a premium destination for people,” Trent said.

Trent and Karlie owned two real estate offices in the South Burnett region before deciding to make a permanent move to Hervey Bay.

“There is no doubt we have plans to expand into Maryborough and the Sunshine Coast, but in the foreseeable future. Our focus is continuing and expanding on the great work that has been done here first.”

Trent's passion for property began early, obtaining his license at just twenty years old. He gained initial experience in the Kingaroy and South Burnett markets before moving to Brisbane to expose himself to diverse learning opportunities within the real estate industry.

“After serving our apprenticeship, we returned to the

South Burnett and opened up our own boutique real estate office in 2016,” Trent recalled.

Initially focusing solely on sales, an opportunity arose to acquire another real estate agency, which introduced them to the property management field.

“Shortly after that, about a year later, we purchased a second real estate office as well. Across the two offices, we were managing over five hundred investment homes on behalf of investors.”

By 2022, Trent and Karlie recognised the incredible opportunities in Hervey Bay and made the lifestyle decision to sell their businesses and relocate.

“We took twelve months off to renovate some properties, got to know the area well, and then we dove right back into Faunt Property.”

Their hands-on experience in buying, selling, and renovating homes, combined with assisting countless others, allows them to provide specialist advice that is both practical and actionable.

“Hervey Bay is a beautiful town; we have been welcomed here with open arms and are looking forward to a bright future,” Trent expressed.

With the acquisition of the Century 21 business by the Pier, over six hundred rental properties now come under

Trent and his team's expert management.

“As property managers, we pride ourselves on being excellent communicators, taking on the responsibility of communicating on our owners' behalf. We are approachable and conduct ourselves positively for you as an investor, as well as for your valued tenants. We ensure the line of communication between yourself, the property manager, and the tenant is as smooth as possible. That way, you can be sure your investment is in good hands.”

Trent believes that retaining good tenants involves addressing day-to-day demands promptly and efficiently.

“Our long-term vision is to grow our business parallel with the growth of our region,” he stated.

“We are super excited to be calling Hervey Bay our home; it is a beautiful part of the world.”

Trent Faunt's journey in real estate, marked by his early passion, diverse experiences, and innovative approach, has positioned him as a key player in the Fraser Coast market.

His commitment to excellence in property management and his strategic vision for growth ensures that Faunt Property will continue to thrive in the years ahead.

White was born in Inverell, Northern New South Wales, and grew up with two siblings: an older sister and a younger brother. The family later moved to Narrabri, where Nicholas was raised on a farm. His father was a Broadacre farmer, cultivating wheat, cereals, pulses, and sometimes cotton.

Nicholas excelled academically and earned a scholarship to attend boarding school in Toowoomba, where his grandparents lived. He spent his school leave with them, a time that he treasures.

As a teenager, he always enjoyed science and had a particular interest in marine studies and biology. During high school, he had the chance to do work experience at the local dentist’s office. Everything fell into place and Nicholas completed a threeyear science degree at a university in Brisbane and then a four-year

dentistry degree in Sydney, dedicating a total of seven years to his education in these fields.

In his third year of dentistry, Nicholas did a dental elective in Ludhiana, the largest city in Punjab and did some community dental clinics.

Now forty-five years old, Nicholas is married to Emilie and has three beautiful daughters: Alexandra, 14, Genevieve, 12, and Stephanie, 10.

He now owns a dental practice, White Dental Co., which opened during the upheaval of the COVID pandemic and has been operating from his current premises in Urraween for just over three years.

Earlier this year, Dr. Nicholas and his wife were approached by Lars and Carla Olsen from the Power of Passion Project, who were going to Nepal to work on some projects. Lars has a long history of voluntary and humanitarian work in Nepal.

It had been identified that the village of Harpan would benefit from a dental camp and Nicholas was invited to provide voluntary dental services there. After extensive planning, Nicholas and his family travelled to Nepal.

The dental project was a collaboration between the Power of Passion Project, the Rotary Club of Dhulikhel, and the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay Sunrise. This was Nicholas’s first time volunteering his services overseas, but he recalled his time in India and thought he might have some idea of what to expect. He worked alongside four national Nepali dentists, who handled translation and patient history-taking. Nicholas assisted with treatment planning and delivery. They went with two mobile dental chairs and units, each with its own compressor and water system, allowing the dentists

to perform fillings, scaling, and extractions.

During the three-day dental camp, the five dentists saw over one hundred patients per day, totalling about three hundred patients. The most common conditions they treated were dental decay and gum disease (periodontal disease), along with loose and broken teeth.

The group camped on the grounds of Janasiddha School in Harpan Village, which had been severely damaged by an earthquake in 2015.

The school is part of the “Let’s Build it Together” Project, aimed at constructing an earthquake-safe school.

On their first night, they experienced a wild monsoon storm, and the weather was hot and humid. With the Himalayas as their backdrop, they could see Annapurna, the world’s tenth-highest peak. the group woke up

to this spectacular view each morning.

After the three-day camp, the group headed back to Pokhara. From there, they went on a short trek at Poon Hill and reached an altitude of about 3,100 meters. Over four days, they trekked more than forty-two kilometres, ascending from approximately 1,500 meters to 3,100 meters and then descending back down. Nicholas took away from the experience a deep appreciation for the gratitude shown by the Nepalese people who were genuinely appreciative of the treatment they received and did not take it for granted. He was also struck by the warmth and resilience of the children, who endured their conditions with remarkable resilience. This experience reinforced for him how much we have to be thankful for here in Australia.

SOME of Australia’s best senior tennis players battled it out on the Fraser Coast in June during a three-day tournament.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the 2024 Hervey Bay Seniors Tournament had attracted players from New South Wales, South Australia and throughout Queensland.

Ninety four players registered for the tournament which was inspiring for the younger players and greatly benefitted our economy, said Cr Seymour.

One of the competitors this year was Kerryn Cyprien from the Gold Coast, who has just returned from the World Seniors Championships in

Mexico where she won two titles.

“Council’s sponsorship of this event is part of a threeyear sponsorship agreement, during which the association will host three Australian Ranking Points Tournaments.

“This Sponsorship also includes the Junior Championships being held 20 – 21st July and the Hervey Bay Open in September.”

Cr Seymour said Council provided $3,000 in sponsorship to the tennis association to stage the tournament for three years (2023, 2024 and 2025).

“We want to provide opportunities for locals to be involved in the sporting

and cultural activities that people in capital cities take for granted,” he said.

Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association President Geoff Arnell said it was fantastic that the club could stage national ranking events like this tournament.

“Since last year’s tournament, a lot of players have competed in World Seniors Events in Türkiye and Mexico bringing home World Title wins across several age groups,” said Mr Arnell.

“We greatly appreciate Council’s contribution and eagerly anticipate another outstanding tournament that will highlight Hervey Bay and tennis.”

Loan settlement story-time!

Recently, our existing home owners refinanced their home to access equity for essential improvements.

A new roof and insulation brought comfort and reduced maintenance costs. They added solar panels, lowering utility bills and enhancing sustainability. With leftover funds, they installed a backyard deck for family gatherings, adding value to their property.

Insights

Despite their initial concerns, the process was smooth and they were able to maintain a similar loan repayment by reducing their home loan interest rate through a more competitive lender.

The improvements not only modernized their home but also increased its market appeal. The clients felt secure knowing their investment would pay dividends in comfort, savings, and enjoyment for years to come.

Equity can be used to funds home improvements - Often lenders will provide cashout with just a simple explanation, meaning you control what the money can be spent on!

Spotlight! Lending policy of the fortnight

Lending policy refers to the set of guidelines, rules, and criteria that a financial institution or lender follows when determining whether to approve a loan to a borrower.

Today’s

policy: Specialist Green/Solar panel Home loan product.

Do you have or do you intend to have solar on your property? Did you know, that if your property has solar panels you may be eligible for a lower interest rate through selected lenders? This could be for a new home, or for an older home. A lower interest rate may also increase your borrowing capacity, so you can complete those home improvements after all.

Home Loans for Renovators.

As a homeowner, you may be interested in adding value to your property. One way you may be able to do this is through renovation. Besides choosing your new look, layout or colours, it is a good idea to weigh up the costs of a renovation and make sure you choose the right financing strategy.

There are a number of options available to you from accessing your equity and repricing or refinancing your home loan to taking out another loan.

How renovation loans work

The finance for a renovation will be different for everyone. The amount you need to borrow, your existing loan balance, your property’s value and the type of renovation you’re undertaking are the most important factors to consider. The first step is usually to get a valuation on your property.

As a homeowner, you

Jen Campbell can organise a valuation for you, which is usually free, and take a look at your current situation and goals to find the right finance strategy for you. With access to over 60 lenders, we make sure you receive a competitive deal that suits your needs.
