It is a common (and often well-founded) complaint in Hervey Bay that tradespeople, especially, but occasionally other businesses as well, have lost the desire and knowledge to provide good customer service.

I had an amazing experience this week at Soy Asian Cuisine which deserves mention.

An extremely busy night for the sole chef, the waiter was also training a new person for front of house. there was a very long line waiting for takeaways.

Not only did the servers remain friendly, polite and

THE HERVEY Bay Carols by Candlelight has evolved into the largest and most attended community event in the region, thanks to the dedication and vision of the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers Association.

Over the years, this event has grown from a small local gathering to a spectacular celebration that draws thousands of residents and visitors each year. Their hard work and commitment have turned the Carols into an iconic event that captures the spirit of Christmas and brings the community together. However, the growing pressures associated with organising this event have placed a significant strain on it, particularly with the rising costs of production and the constant need to secure sponsorship and partnership funding to cover expenses. This is evident each year, with calls out to the

professional, the chef herself personally handed many of the meals over with her apologies for any delay and a commitment to do better next time.

I was tired after a long day and my meal was delayed, but I left Soy Asian feeling like I mattered and was so very happy with their service, the food could have been ordinary and I would not have minded (it certainly wasn’t).

I encourage everyone to give this restaurant a try - great food, definitely, but because customer satisfaction is their primary concern.

I have written to Council querying the reduction in hours at the Aquatic Centres.

The response I received from the manager of the facilities made no mention of staff shortages but instead states “The reduction in hours was based on a considered response to operational areas that for years had not been effectively managed” and further “Reduction of hours to better facilitate a sustainable operational model that is focused of workplace safety and patron wellbeing by improving on our facilities and services.”

As none of my questions were in fact answered I have again written asking for

community for financial support. The ongoing financial challenge has led to the recognition that the event’s future sustainability requires additional concrete support.

Given the scale and importance of the event, I believe it would be beneficial for it to be handed over to Fraser Coast Tourism and Events (FCTE), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Council funds FCTE to the tune of more than $1.5M a year, with rate-payers money.

They have the infrastructure, staff, resources, and funding mechanisms in place to help alleviate the financial stress and logistical burdens currently faced by the current organising committee for the Carols by Candlelight.

FCTE is tasked with civic event management,

clarification.

Are Mondays (Fridays in Maryborough), now dedicated to staff training?

Is the reduction of hours to enable extra staff to be rostered on each day?

How exactly is reducing the hours going to improve safety?

Is this a temporary measure?

I have yet to receive a reply.

Do people realise that both Hervey Bay and Maryborough pools will be closed all through the Easter break?

In addition, there are about seven other public holidays when neither facility will be open.

Our population is expanding rapidly meaning there will obviously be increased demand. Why then, are hours being

and their established networks would ensure the Carols by Candlelight continues to thrive and grow in the years ahead.

Council is already a major financial partner in the Carols by Candlelight, and transitioning the event’s management and budget to FCTE would surely result in Council not spending twice.

As Hervey Bay expands and demand for largescale events increases, having a well-resourced entity like FCTE oversee the Carols would secure its future as a vibrant civic tradition.

This transition not only avoids unnecessary duplication of Council spending but also strengthens the foundation of one of Hervey Bay’s most treasured celebrations.

Let’s ensure the Carols by Candlelight remains a shining light in our community for years to come.

so greatly reduced for no apparent reason.

I completely agree with your recent piece on the importance of supporting local businesses in Hervey Bay.

While it’s great to see national chains setting up shop and offering more options, nothing beats the value of keeping our dollars in the community.

Local businesses are the heart of Hervey Bay.

They sponsor our kids’ sports teams, donate to school fundraisers, and back grassroots projects that make

our town feel like home. Plus, they offer unique products, personal service, and a passion you just don’t get from big corporations. Every dollar we spend locally helps create jobs, fuels innovation, and strengthens our economy.

It’s a win for everyone. So, before heading to a chain store, let’s check out what our amazing local businesses have to offer.

By supporting them, we’re investing in Hervey Bay’s future and keeping our community connected and thriving.

the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s proactive approach to maintaining safety and ensuring quality services at the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres.

While the temporary revised hours may be a change for some patrons, I believe this is a sensible and responsible measure, especially given the challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified staff.

Safety must always be the top priority, and it is heartening to see that the Council is not only addressing current staffing shortages but also investing in long term solutions such as staff training and converting part time roles into permanent positions.

This not only enhances the safety of swimmers but also contributes positively to the local economy by providing more secure job opportunities.

I applaud the Council for its thoughtful and balanced approach, and I’m confident that this temporary adjustment will ultimately result in better facilities and an even safer environment for all.

I look forward to the future expansion of operating hours as the staffing situation improves.

Supporting Hervey Bay Businesses in 2025.

I immediately thought of the wonderful fruit store outside Coles in Stockland’s (I am unsure of the name)

I was shopping there a few days ago as all his produce is either locally sourced here in the Fraser or interstate regions and ALL his produce is wonderfully fresh.

I was notified that on approaching Xmas and New Year the fruit store was notified that their rent has been increased by 40%!!!

They are forced now to close their Stockland’s outlet!!! … as will other small businesses in Stockland’s.

To me that is totally pushing out and not supporting small local businesses!

strategies to support both. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Australia, and its effects reach far beyond our hearts.

Conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol can not only cause damage to the heart, but can also increase the risk of cognitive decline, and the development of dementia.

By 2054, the number of Australians living with dementia is expected to double.

So, protecting our heart and brain health now is more vital than ever, not only for our own health and wellbeing, but to reduce the pressure on our health system as it braces for the impact of an ageing population.

At Heart Research Australia, we are committed to reducing the devastating impact heart disease has on families and the community.

As REDFEB, Heart Awareness Month, approaches this February, Heart Research Australia is urging all Australians to come together and take action to safeguard both their heart and brain health.

Additionally, a $3.1 million bitumen resealing program will improve over 80 roads across the Fraser Coast, including areas like Maryborough and Hervey Bay. This process extends road life by 8-14 years. Affected residents will be notified, and work on both projects begins this week, with completion expected by March, weather permitting.

FRASER Coast residents are being invited to have their say on the future of waste management to support our growing community, protect the environment and create economic opportunities.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Waste spokesperson, Cr Zane O’Keefe, said Council was reviewing its 10-year waste strategy at its halfway point to ensure it remained effective and aligned with state and national priorities.

“The Fraser Coast Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2019–2029 provides a practical road map for managing solid waste in our region. It focuses on boosting recycling and resource recovery while reducing the amount of waste

sent to landfill,” he said.

“As part of this review, we’re asking important questions like: Are we recycling enough? Do we have the right infrastructure in place? Is there enough education about waste management?

“By working together, we can improve recycling rates, reduce landfill waste, and recover more resources to create a cleaner and greener Fraser Coast.”

“This review is a chance for the community to shape how we manage waste in the years

ahead,” Cr O’Keefe said.

Local residents can share their thoughts by completing an online survey on Council’s Engagement Hub website - https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/fcrcwaste-strategy-review

For more information Council staff will be available at the Rotary Maryborough Markets on January 23 and at the Urangan Pier Markets on February 8 and 15, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Cr Seymour said there will be some disruptions to pool services during the upcoming upgrades.

“An area around the 50m pool will be fenced off, with some lanes temporarily unavailable to swimmers,” he said.

“To accommodate the disconnection of the outdoor light towers, the pool’s opening hours will be adjusted during the construction period.

“The lagoon pool will remain closed for the duration of the renovations, and certain pathways will be restricted to

ensure public safety.”

The latest works follow the recent completion of the stage 1A upgrades, which focused on improvements in the 25-metre pool area (including new toilets, disability access, and changing facilities), the plant room, and the service yard, said Cr Seymour.

“We are grateful to the Queensland Government for providing $3.5 million through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies program towards the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre upgrades,” he said.

Minister for Local Government and Water

Ann Leahy said: “Our local communities deserve high quality services and amenities.

“I’m delighted we’ve been able to work with Fraser Coast Regional Council to provide

these infrastructure upgrades for local residents.

“Facilities like aquatic centres not only promote active lifestyles, but also act as spaces where the community can come together.”

Cr Seymour said the Aquatic Centre team would work to minimise the impact on the public and keep the 50-metre pool open as much as possible during the next stage of work.

“The lagoon pool will remain closed until the completion of the stage 1B upgrades, and we thank the community for their continued patience while this work is carried out,” he said.

“Council is committed to effectively managing and maintaining our assets and planning for the future, and that’s what this project is all about.”

Part of the current concrete path from the main entry to the 25m pool and program (learn-to-swim) pool will be off-limits for the duration of the project.

People with mobility issues heading to the 25m and program pools will be asked to check in at the main entry and then proceed to the external gate on Boundary Road near the intersection with Raward Road.

A pick-up and set-down parking space has been added near this gate, while the car park near the main entrance will still be available.

The works at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre are proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.

A 16-YEAR-old Riverside Christian College student is already taking significant strides toward her dream career in the creative industries. Marni MacDonald, passionate about art and tattooing, recently completed a Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics through TAFE Queensland’s TAFE at School program at the Hervey Bay campus. She’s now halfway through a Certificate III in Visual Arts at CQU, demonstrating her dedication to her future profession.

Marni, who has loved art since a young age, says becoming a tattoo artist was a natural choice. “I’ve always loved drawing, and I enjoy drawing on people, so I thought, why not make that my career?” she shared. But Marni is also focused on keeping her options open. In addition to tattooing, she plans to explore opportunities in retail or cosmetic tattooing, ensuring she’s equipped with a diverse skill set.

Through the TAFE at School program, Marni earned her first qualification while still in high school, allowing her to gain valuable hands-on experience in a supportive learning environment.

“I’m not super patient—I want to start my career early,” she said with a laugh. “I love the freedom and structure TAFE offers, and the practical experience of doing makeup on people was really fun.”

Marni’s early achievements are just the beginning. By the time

she graduates this year, she will have two nationally recognised qualifications, boosting her confidence and preparing her for the next steps. Her long-term goal is to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, which will further support her ambition to break into the creative industries.

Reflecting on her experience, Marni encouraged other students to

explore similar pathways. “If you’re still in school and have the chance to do TAFE at School, do it. It’ll open up so many doors for your future,” she advised.

LEADERSHIP

TWO FRASER Coast church initiatives designed to uplift and support vulnerable community members have received a significant boost through Carinity’s Collaborative Community Projects funding program.

The program, which has awarded grants totalling nearly $220,000 to churches across Queensland, aims to address issues of disadvantage, promote social connectivity, and strengthen local neighbourhoods.

Among the beneficiaries are eight churches located in Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Ipswich, Townsville, Moreton Bay, Logan, and the Sunshine Coast.

Central to each of these projects is a commitment to alleviating hardship and fostering a sense of community, especially for those who are most at risk.

Two Fraser Coast churches, in particular, will use the funding to expand their successful COACH mentoring programs, which are designed to offer targeted support to those facing challenges in their lives.

Hervey Bay Baptist Church will use the funds to extend its Youth COACH mentoring program, which operates

in four secondary schools across the region, including Carinity Education Glendyne. The initiative is aimed at students experiencing various difficulties, such as academic struggles, social isolation, or personal trauma. By connecting these students with mentors, the program seeks to improve their educational outcomes, build resilience, and create a support network to help them overcome obstacles.

The expansion of the COACH programs in Hervey Bay and Maryborough highlights Carinity’s broader mission of supporting local communities and reducing disadvantage. Carinity’s Collaborative Community Projects fund empowers churches to become key players in tackling social issues and

enhancing the wellbeing of their communities, particularly those who are vulnerable or isolated.

Carinity’s funding is part of a broader effort to provide long-term, sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by Queensland’s most disadvantaged communities, and it reinforces the importance of collaboration between social services, local churches, and community leaders in building stronger, more connected neighbourhoods.

Through these initiatives, both Hervey Bay and Maryborough are set to witness the growth of programs that will provide critical support to young people and families in need, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY 8AM  5PM

AS THE new year has welcomed us, many of us are met with both excitement and reflection.

The modern conversation around self-care has gained momentum—there’s been a push to take time for oneself, to prioritise work-life balance and to play more.

However, amidst this enthusiasm, it can sometimes feel trivialised.

Faced with snippets of people indulging in face masks or charmingly sharing their “selfcare routines,” one might feel irritation or scepticism.

Yet, self-care is far more than a fleeting trend; it’s a vital practice, especially as we navigate life’s complexities.

Whether you are grappling with personal hardships—be it health struggles, financial woes, or emotional hurdles— or if you find yourself blessed and content during this chapter of your life, the new year offers an opportunity for introspection.

This is a crucial time to pause and reflect on our identities. Who are we when the titles we wear—parent, employee,

caregiver, partner—are stripped away?

It’s in those quiet moments that we confront our true selves.

We often define ourselves based on societal expectations and the perceptions of others.

But to grow, we must look within and recognise our own needs.

Self-discovery allows us to understand our emotions, desires, and beliefs. When we embrace our individuality, we can truly nurture our wellbeing—body, mind, heart, and spirit.

Your health is an interconnected web, influenced

by what you consume, the thoughts you entertain, the people you surround yourself with, and the environment you foster.

This new year, prioritise your needs as an essential part of your self-care routine.

Understand that it’s okay to seek help, to rest, and to grow.

In nurturing ourselves, we simultaneously create the capacity to help others.

By finding strength and value in our own journeys, we learn to appreciate our unique experiences and the growth they bring, ultimately enabling us to support others more effectively.

So, take this time of renewal to honor your path, reflect on your identity, and, ultimately, embrace the transformative power of self-care.

The journey to understanding ourselves is one of the most impactful gifts we can offer to ourselves and to others as we step into the new year.

“This incredible dress was crafted from garbage bags, fruit bags, egg cartons, milk bottles, wool, ice cream sticks, and toilet rolls,” Cr Seymour said.

Fraser Coast Regional Mayor George Seymour said a record breaking 151 artworks were created for the exhibition which launched in November 2024 and has now wrapped up with the winners of the People’s Choice being announced.

The Junior Exhibition People’s Choice winner is Joni Cobbin for her entry Black Friday’s Dress, earning her a $150 prize.

The Senior Exhibition People’s Choice winner is Ruthie Purnell for her artwork The Princess and the Mask, winning $300.

“This stunning dress, made from pink masks, represents the aftermath of COVID-19 and the silent pandemic of waste that followed,” Cr Seymour said.

“Approximately 1,000 disposable face masks from the Reuse and Recycle Centre in Hervey Bay were

used to create the piece, along with lolly wrappers from Wide Bay Sweets, milk bottles, and reclaimed beads.

The Waste to Art Exhibition, held at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough since November, attracted 1,374 visitors – up from 1,185 in 2023 – with over 400 people casting votes for their favorite artworks.

“The exhibition grows in popularity each year, challenging perceptions of waste while encouraging innovative recycling and creative reuse of unwanted materials,” Cr Seymour said.

SIGNIFICANT restoration work

on the Urangan Pier will begin later this month to keep the iconic local landmark safe and

for the community.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor

Zane O’Keefe said regular inspections showed that parts of the pier were deteriorating and needed repairs.

“The Urangan Pier has been part of the Fraser Coast community for more than 100 years,” he said.

“It was originally built to ship sugar, coal and timber from the Fraser Coast to the world. In the 1980s, when the pier faced demolition, passionate locals rallied to save it, ensuring 868 metres of its structure were preserved.

“These restoration works will ensure the pier remains safe and extend its life so it can continue to be enjoyed for fishing, walking and sightseeing for many years to come.”

Timber Restoration Services will carry out the restoration

works between 28 January and 4 April, weather and construction conditions permitting.

“Sections of the pier will need to be temporarily closed during the works, and signs will be installed to keep the community informed,” Cr O’Keefe said.

“The repairs will include replacing or reinforcing damaged timber, installing new railings and kerbs, restoring historical features and repainting. Measures will also be taken to protect the marine environment during the works.

“To minimise disruption, the repairs are planned outside school holidays. If delays occur, the pier will fully reopen for the Easter holidays, with works resuming on 23 April.”

Cr O’Keefe said the $1 million project was being supported through the State Government Works for Queensland program.

“Regular maintenance of the pier lighting is ongoing to ensure its functionality. Given the challenges

posed by the harsh coastal environment, Council is exploring options for a replacement lighting system to be included in future capital budgets.

“We understand the temporary closure of sections of the pier may cause inconvenience, but the short-term disruption will ensure this iconic pier remains safe and accessible for generations to come,” he said.

Cr O’Keefe said the $1 million project was developed with the support of the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.

Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said "Ask any local and they'll tell you that a visit to Hervey Bay is not complete without a stroll down the historic Urangan Pier. We're delighted to work closely with Council to ensure this landmark can be enjoyed by locals and visitors well into the future."

HERVEY BAY has long been a magnet for retirees, families, and sea-changers drawn to its relaxed coastal lifestyle.

However, the city’s rapidly increasing population is outstripping the growth of its built form, creating significant pressure on housing, infrastructure, and community services.

Data highlights that Hervey Bay’s population is growing at one of the fastest rates in Queensland, driven by interstate migration and natural population growth.

Yet, the pace of housing development and infrastructure expansion has lagged behind, leading to soaring property prices, dwindling rental vacancies, and stretched public facilities.

The imbalance between population growth and built form development stems from several factors: outdated town planning, protracted approval processes, and a lack of diversity in housing options.

Large-scale developments

often face resistance from community members concerned about preserving Hervey Bay’s lowdensity character, further compounding the problem.

This mismatch risks undermining the city’s appeal. Without affordable and accessible housing, younger generations may be forced to leave, leaving Hervey Bay with a predominantly aging demographic. Similarly, inadequate

infrastructure such as roads, schools, and health services could hinder the region’s capacity to attract new residents and businesses.

To address this, the State & Federal Governments, Fraser Coast Regional Council and the development industry must work together to streamline approval processes, encourage innovative housing designs, and align infrastructure planning with projected population growth.

By embracing “gentle density” and sustainable urban development, Hervey Bay can balance its growth with liveability, securing a thriving future for its residents. This is not just about keeping pace; it’s about creating a city that works for everyone.

AFTER a career-ending injury, Tracey MacDonald faced an uncertain future.

But today, the 47-year-old is making a significant impact in the lives of individuals struggling with substance use and mental health challenges at the Maryborough Correctional Centre, where she works as a caseworker for Drug ARM.

MacDonald, who spent 15 years as a diesel fitter before an injury changed her life, found herself grappling with what to do next.

Having experienced substance use herself, she was driven by a desire to understand and help others facing similar struggles.

This led her to pursue studies at TAFE Queensland, where she graduated last year with dual diplomas in Alcohol and Other Drugs and Mental Health.

Reflecting on her journey, MacDonald said, “During that time, I wanted to step into a space where I could make a difference.”

Her lived experience has proved invaluable in her current role, where she’s known for her ability to connect with individuals on their path to rehabilitation.

“It’s a tough environment, but when I hear, ‘Miss, you helped me so much,’ that’s what makes it all worth it,”

she said.

MacDonald’s path into this field began with a Certificate IV in Youth Work, followed by roles working with at-risk youth.

She later earned a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which opened doors for her to teach and mentor others.

However, it was her work with Drug ARM that truly

ignited her passion for supporting those facing addiction and mental health challenges.

Studying under the guidance of TAFE Queensland instructors like Eileen Newman, MacDonald credits her education for giving her the tools to complement her personal experience.

“This course has removed the stigma for me. I’m not ashamed of my journey anymore,” she said.

Now, as she continues her work at Drug ARM, MacDonald looks forward to expanding her skills in group facilitation and therapeutic techniques like cognitive behavioural therapy, with the goal of bringing lasting change to the lives of those she helps. Her story is a testament to resilience and the power of turning adversity into a force for good.

WIDE Bay remains a key hub for regional medical training, with 33 new medical interns joining the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) for their hands-on learning experience.

The interns include 15 based in the Fraser Coast and 18 in Bundaberg, where they will spend the next 12 months working under the guidance of senior clinicians.

WBHHS Chief Operating Officer Ben Ross Edwards congratulated the new interns, emphasising the importance of nurturing local medical talent.

“Building and developing our own medical workforce is a key goal in our strategic plan,” he said. “Our annual intern program is vital as we guide doctors in the early stages of their careers.”

At Hervey Bay Hospital, the interns are beginning their orientation program in

mid-January, which includes familiarisation with local hospitals, services, and procedures.

Over the next year, they will rotate through key areas such as medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, and specialties like obstetrics, anaesthetics, and mental health.

Ross Edwards highlighted the value of having two interns who grew up locally, underscoring the connection to the community.

“Having young doctors return to their hometowns is not only professionally exciting but also beneficial for the local community.”

Fraser Coast Director of Clinical Training, Dr John Inderhaug, noted that the comprehensive orientation program is crucial for preparing the interns for their clinical roles.

“They will receive training in prescribing, medication safety, and advanced life support, among other skills, before starting their rotations,” he said.

Dr Joelle Cullen, one of the new interns at Hervey Bay, shared her excitement about returning to the region where she completed third and fourth-year placements.

Originally from Biloela, Dr Cullen is eager to contribute to the local healthcare teams.

“I’ve always been focused on regional healthcare, and now I’m excited to give back to the community that supported my training,” she said.

WBHHS is optimistic that investing in the development of these new doctors will strengthen healthcare services across the region for years to come.

“I was going to New Guinea, and I asked Joan to marry me,” Alan recalled. “My argument was simple — if we didn’t get married, we probably wouldn’t see each other again. I was from Grafton, NSW, and Joan

Their decision to marry turned out to be the start of an incredible life together.

Alan and Joan have spent the past eight decades not only cherishing each other but also contributing to their

They are particularly proud of their role in founding a local

community theatre in Ballina, where they raised $150,000 in 1985, which was matched by a government grant.

“I think it’s the best-run theatre in New South Wales for an amateur group,” Alan proudly said. “It’s so important for a community to have a theatre.”

Throughout their marriage, the couple was also deeply involved in their business ventures.

For nearly 40 years, they ran a Holden dealership and garage service while volunteering their time to the theatre.

Joan also dedicated 35 years of service to Meals on Wheels, an effort that earned

her an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2000 for her outstanding contributions to the community.

As Joan prepares to celebrate her 100th birthday in March, the couple now resides at Baycrest in Hervey Bay, where they enjoy their time together, surrounded by family and memories of a life well-lived.

Alan and Joan’s love and devotion to each other, their family, and their community serve as an enduring example of commitment and service. Their story is a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and giving back — and, as Alan puts it, “We’ve had a great life together.”

ELEANOR Frahm, affectionately known as Nell, was born in Toowoomba in 1929 (the start of the Great Depression) and spent her early years about 20 minutes outside the city.

As one of six children, Nell was the middle child, with two elder brothers, a sister, and two younger brothers. Sadly at 95 years, Nell is the only surviving sibling of her family.

Later, the family settled in Drayton, Nell’s father’s birthplace, which had once been the region’s main town and is now a suburb of Toowoomba.

Her father had various jobs over the years, he served in the Air Force for four years, worked as a share farmer, joined the Toowoomba City Council, and later did light duties at a service station.

Nell’s mother managed the household and raised six children while running a small dairy operation

with two or three cows.

From the age of 10, Nell helped milk the cows, walked them a mile and a half to and from the paddock, and helped make butter and cream, some of which her mother sold to Air Force personnel. The family also raised chickens.

Life was challenging but fulfilling. Nell vividly remembers her mother’s monthly trips into town with a horse and sulky, returning with a small packet of lollies to be shared among all six children.

The packet had to last a month. “It was a happy childhood,” Nell recalls.

“There wasn’t much money, and not much conversation, but we knew we were loved. It was a different time—no wireless, no TV, just each other.

Dad played the Button Accordion, and we’d sit and listen to him. Those were great memories.”

Nell was 10 years old when World War II broke out.

She left school after grade ten and began her working life with Queensland Trustees.

When that job ended Nell moved on to a tent factory. Sewing the tents was physically demanding, so when her father informed her of a job opening at a local service station, she eagerly took it and remained there until she married.

At 19, Nell met Wallace, fondly called Bill, at a dance in Drayton.

A few months later, they married. Bill was initially a wheat hauler and log cutter and provided firewood for stoves.

The couple first lived with Bill’s sister, but over the years, they moved frequently, including a stint in Drayton while he worked at a bacon factory and later in Roma, where they lived in a caravan with their five

children for eight years.

Bill had always dreamed of becoming a carpenter.

Determined to turn that dream into reality, he started working at a sawmill, where he met a carpenter who became his mentor, he soaked up every bit of knowledge and skill he could.

It was no surprise that the couple started working in the house building industry.

In the 1960s, Bill and Nell worked on housing commission homes and spec homes.

Nell supported Bill by priming timber, painting, and even did some hammering. Their work took them to Gladstone, where they spent 22 years building homes before eventually shifting to plant hire.

Bill sustained a foot injury in 1982, which led to his retirement, and the couple moved to Hervey Bay where

Nell worked for about three years in the

Bay.

She warmly reflects on her nearly 69 years of marriage to Bill, who passed away seven and a half years ago after battling Parkinson’s disease.

“We had our arguments, but any couple who says they don’t isn’t being honest.

“Marriage is about balance,” she says. “If both partners give 80% and take 20%, it works.

A strong believer in giving back, Nell has volunteered with the RSL Women’s Auxiliary for many years, and crochets items for their tombola fundraisers.

With grandchildren scattered across the country, Nell cherishes each moment when sees them.
