IN RESPONSE to the unprecedented housing crisis, a new law has been voted in that will allow friends and family to live in a caravan, on a property, for up to six months in a twelve-month period.
Yes. Yes. Yes.
Now, if I were Cr Darren Everard, Cr Zane O’Keefe or Cr James Hansen, I would probably be reassessing my ability to read my communities tea leaves, in the wake of the overwhelming public support for the new local law.
Eight councillors voted for, and only these three voted against pursuing the local law change to allow the community to help the community, when it was first raised in October of last year.
Last week’s great letter re the councils current building programs by Delma Taylor said it all.
The outlandish millions this Taj Mahal in Pialba is costing has most ratepayers furious. Not to mention the stupidity of the site.
Do they ever check the demographics before proceeding with thought bubbles?
We can’t afford it. As she said use some common sense.
J. FrenchDear Sir, thank you for your letter in the advertiser on 12/01/2023. I have sent many letters to the council regarding people using the “no dog” areas on Hervey Bay beaches, and also dogs off their leads in a lead only area…No answers. The council seem to have staff to check out cars parked too long on the esplanade area but no one to police the beaches.
They might as well of not spent all our rate payers’ money on signage along the front if they did not mean
what they say.
We are an older couple and we don’t need dogs running towards us on the beach or the grassed areas or anywhere else.
Dogs jumping up even if they’re not going to bite, we don’t know that. Have we been bitten...? You bet we have!
The laws should change that dog owners pay a higher fee if their dogs are running wild and also pay for doctors’ fees, injections and time off work plus the dog mess some people leave around.
Why bring their dogs to other people’s lawns and
Over 5,000 signatures were cast on a Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre petition to make this happen, which is simply a massive response, by any measure.
Equally, it’s as close to a smackdown on the ‘vote no trio’ as you’re ever likely to see.
People are desperate, sleeping in their cars, tents and local parks.
Caution gentleman, it can be a long fall from that high horse you are sitting on.
Last October a proposal from Cr Jade Wellings, to allow people to accommodate victims of the region’s housing crisis in a caravan, on their own properties was put forward to Council.
This was double-downed with an impassioned presentation by respected CEO of the Hervey
gardens to pee over their plants every day until they die?
The last problem I had the dog was off lead and ran out in front of my bike, that had me off.
I had a job on to keep him from biting me and the owner who had the dog didn’t even call him off me.
I am shouting get it away and they said “carry on like that and the dog will bite you”. We pay our rates and should feel safe out for a walk anywhere.
I think we need a change of council like Delma Taylor mentioned in her letter under yours.
Bay Neighbourhood Centre Tanya Stevenson, to all councillors urging them to consider this proposal as a way to provide some relief to the surge in homelessness across the region.
The law will allow vital free temporary accommodation to family and friends who find themselves homeless, as a result of the rentals crisis. Property owners cannot charge rent or ask for payment.
The work of Jade, Tanya and the Fraser Coast Regional Council to display the nimbleness to respond to this chronic issue in our region, shows outstanding leadership by those with a true understanding of humanity over politics.
I tip my hat to them all.

After 15 years of strolling along the Charlton Esplanade, our Publisher has come to realise the informality and cheerfulness that brings many folk to live at Hervey Bay. The joggers, walkers, runners, cyclists, anglers, swimmers and dog owners who frequent the Esplanade walkway mostly respect this wonderful community facility and should rightly thank both present and past councils for its existence.
When one really wants to find out how long a fellow pathway user has been a resident, the question to ask is can they remember the beachside before the Charlton Esplanade was built. If their answer is truly “yes”, the next question is can they remember the original postcodes for Urangan (4658), Torquay (4657) and Scarness (4656). If they can remember those numbers, then they must truly be old hands at enjoying Hervey Bay’s beautiful and restful waterfront.

When I first moved here from Sydney it was weird to hear so many happy bubbly and friendly people as nobody in the mornings in Sydney ever said good morning.
8yrs walking up and down the esplanade it’s a hello or talk with locals - I love it and wouldn’t change it for the world!
The amount of amazing stories I’ve heard from people there are amazing people in this town!
Much gratitude
Alicia Wade
I met with a friend for coffee in Bean Beat. Quite spontaneously and separately we spoke of the recent Publisher’s Point in the Advertiser.
The Publisher’s Point expressed enthusiasm for the many pedestrians on the Esplanade Mobility track who say a polite and friendly “G’day”. The friend and I happily endorse this experience. Particularly, we are pleased that the Publisher saw fit to write and publish this example of good civic behaviour. Such leadership by The Publisher does help towards
such pleasing habits and must be encouraged. For myself, I say “G’day” and give a hand wave.
Always, I get and enjoy a response. The response pleases me and it makes my walk a happy one.

Perfectly put .. as I’m from Burleigh and have now been living and working with my business for 12 months now
.. in Hervey Bay , which I call Home
Peter SkapaI would like to congratulate ‘Publisher’s Point’ on his article on “…if you are a local or not”. My wife and I comment regularly on our walks along the esplanade of the friendliness of people here compared to other regions we visit. We call ourselves “locals” after 13 years of living in Hervey Bay and love the atmosphere and general attitude of most.
We are realists that Hervey Bay has to develop with the growing population and know the esplanade will change further in future years, but
our walkway is truly unique and we need to appreciate what we have as there is no shame to walk with a smile. A quick “hello” or “g’day” is a simple gesture yet can reflect a welcoming community regardless of where they live.
It’s an exciting time for Hervey Bay. The last few years has seen property prices climb enormously that has benefited thousands of families in our region. While I acknowledge there is a housing crisis, let’s not ignore that many have benefited from investing in the region by deciding Hervey Bay will be their home. We have a lot to be very thankful for so let’s reflect a happy community and say hello to fellow walkers – whether they are locals or visitors.
Mark PetersLocal or not Hervey Bay is an amazing place to live with beautiful beaches and walking trails alike. Lots of people go for a walk for lots of different reasons. Sometimes you may be listening to music, a podcast or just deep in thought to notice someone’s kind gesture. We have a great community here in Hervey Bay let’s keep it going.

In May, 2022 Fraser Coast Regional Council instigated a collaborative ‘Crime and AntiSocial Behavior Community Workshop’ in response to an apparent rise in Hervey Bay’s Esplanade and Main Street youth crime rates. One of the agreed outcomes of the Workshop was to implement a Crime Prevention Audit as a high priority.
Cr Lee said, “Youth justice reform and QPS resourcing are matters for the State
Government. However, Council has an obligation to do all it reasonably can do to curb crime in our community.”
“Our small business community has reported hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage and has endured years of challenges with vaccine mandates and cost of living pressures,” he said.
Cr Lee said, “The Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Audit is about a well-considered assessment of Council’s built
environment. This audit is about taking reasonable and practical steps to minimize the potential for crime along the Esplanade including Main Street.”
“Some of the recommendations of the audit should be considered in the longer-term implementation of the Esplanade Master Plan.”
“The Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Audit is scheduled to commence in the coming months.”
A 3-YEAR continuation of a public-private partnership will deliver ongoing innovative radiation therapy to Wide Bay residents. The partnership between Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) and GenesisCare, celebrating 5 years of service in January 2023, has now treated over 6,000 people with cancer. Before the partnership people needed to travel to the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane to receive much of this kind of treatment.
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Chief Operating Officer, Ben Ross-Edwards said that the partnership continuation and the resulting ongoing local care is great news for Wide Bay cancer patients.
In the five years of the public-private partnership, the GenesisCare centres in the Mater Hospital in Bundaberg and St Stephen’s Private Hospital in Hervey Bay have delivered radiation therapy to 6,221 patients made up of 131,631 treatment sessions. The team has grown over the years and now employs over 60 people from the local community.
“GenesisCare provides the same high-quality service and technology treating
patients in their Wide Bay centres as they’d receive in a metro centre,” says Dr Sean Brennan, Regional Medical Director at GenesisCare for Wide Bay and Central Queensland.
“Our Hervey Bay skin biopsy clinic is the first on the Fraser Coast and has served over 150 patients needing a skin biopsy. The initial appointment is usually available within a day,” he says.
Sonya Chapman lives in Hervey Bay with her husband, close to her family and friends. In 2017 she had a breast cancer diagnosis and received radiation therapy shortly after at the GenesisCare,
Hervey Bay centre after initial treatment with surgery. She was the first patient to put a ’leaf’ on the GenesisCare, Hervey Bay ‘tree of life’ – a wall decoration in every GenesisCare centre where people can leave a message about their cancer journey.
“I am so happy that I can get great care at a top-notch facility near home. I felt really supported by the people at GenesisCare helping me through this scary and difficult time. Being treated in my local community made it so much easier, allowing me to stay near my family and friends and get on with my busy life,” she says.
A PROGRAM to produce Trauma Teddys, buy a fridge and skate park events to promote mental health are among the initiatives being supported through the Fraser Coast Regional Council Community Grants Program.
“Council will provide $43,815.22 in grants which will help 18 organisations across the region improve facilities, host events and develop community initiatives,” Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said.
“The Trauma Teddys are produced by Red Cross volunteers at their own expense.
“They have produced more than 8,500 bears since project started 10 years ago.
“The approved material to fill the Teddys is becoming increasingly expensive for the volunteers so the grant will significantly enhance the continuation of this valuable community service.
“Meanwhile Fraser Coast Cycling Club will receive funds to go towards a project to buy a new fridge and loan bikes for juniors joining the sport to use to see if they like it before having to buy expensive bikes of their own.”
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre was also allocated a grant to help stage the Bay and Borough Beat (Youth Skate Park Event).
The annual youth survey for the Fraser Coast in 2022 indicated that 34% of young people (12-18 years) identified as needing mental health support.
The events will help promote awareness and engagement of local youth sector services while also promoting drugand-alcohol-free events.
Council also approved a $5,000 grant from the 2022-23 Sport and Recreation Capital Assistance Fund for the Wide Bay Gymnastics Upgrade of Recreational Gym Equipment.
Successful applicants for Round 2 of the Community Grants Program 2022-23:
• Australian Red Cross Society Fraser Coast Branch, Trauma Teddy Project, $985;

THE FRASER Coast Young Professionals group is back, with a focus on ‘Enhancing the Fraser Coast by building successful, productive business relationships to better the future of our region and focusing on retaining and encouraging young professionals in the region.’
The committee consists of six dedicated young professionals from across the Fraser Coast with Sara Diana Faraj as president, Luke Strochnetter as vice president, Amelia Pallpratt as Secretary, Lachlan Wheeler as treasurer, Jack West on social media and Sjuul Gorissen as events coordinator.
The Fraser Coast Young Professionals is focused on seeing the Fraser Coast grow as an economic and social hub of attraction, with diverse career opportunities for today and the future. It
strives to support projects and policies that will deliver jobs, provide career growth and continually strive to lead, educate, and encourage others of opportunities in the Fraser Coast Region. The Fraser Coast Young Professionals works in collaboration with both the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Chamber of Commerce.
President Sara Diana Faraj says, “In a growing community, it is imperative that we support and retain our young people to ensure a diverse working economy.
“Whilst the Fraser Coast is an ageing community, those that come here to retire utilise local businesses and services in their leisure thus, making the Fraser Coast an enviable location to live, work and play.
“Additionally, more younger families are choosing to call
this paradise home, and we must work hand in hand to ensure we retain them and build strong networks and relationships that will give back to the Fraser Coast.”
The Fraser Coast Young Professionals committee will meet as required and aims to host monthly events that will be run during the morning and evening rotating between Hervey Bay and Maryborough locations supporting as many local businesses as possible.
All young professionals or those just starting out in their careers between the ages of 18 to 35 are welcome.

NEW Fraser Coast local laws will be operating within weeks to allow property owners or occupiers to let family or friends live in a caravan in their backyard for up to six months in a 12-month period.
“These changes will allow people to provide free temporary accommodation to family and friends who cannot find rental accommodation,”
Cr Jade Wellings said.
“There is a critical shortage of rental accommodation across the country, and this is one way Council can help.
“While housing is primarily a State Government responsibility, our community is looking to us as local leaders to do something in this space.
“This proposal certainly won’t be a silver bullet, but it may help take some pressure off and help people to take care of their loved ones in their time of need.”
The amendments include regulations to safeguard the amenity of neighbours, such as that the caravan is only for temporary use as a place of residence, and it is not to be used for more than six months in a 12-month period.
Residents will have to complete a registration form to ensure they comply with the local law regulations and to alert Council that a caravan has been placed on a block.
The new requirements do not override existing regulations
which allow residents to let friends and family visiting on holidays to stay for four weeks in a caravan in their backyard.
“These changes are aimed at helping people who are homeless and do change regulations governing holiday makers,” Cr Wellings said.
There are other requirements and provisions of the new local law that can be found on the council website.
Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre CEO, Tanya Stevenson, celebrated the outcome. “This has the potential to provide immediate accommodation and could allow the community to support each other during the housing shortage.”
THE WIDEBAY Rodders will once again present their annual May in the Wide Bay event across Friday April 28th until Monday 1st May.
The hugely popular Esplanade Cruise will take part on Saturday afternoon April 29th, with as many as 500 beautiful Hot Rods, Classics, Australian and American Muscle Cars along with Vintage Motorcycles.
“This event is an amazing sight for the residents to see,” WideBay Rodders Secretary Wendy Kelly said.
“Last year our May in the Wide Bay event raised over $30,000 for the local community and attracted people from all over the country to Hervey Bay.”
“We were very happy to be able to support local sporting and charity groups like Bay Power, Riding for the Disabled and the Neo Natal Unit at the hospital,” Wendy said.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council has pledged support for the event for the next three years, ensuring the vital local tourism driver remains vibrant and growing.
This event injects between $2.5 and $3 million dollars into our local community.
“Council is proud to support
the Rodders stage this event,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.
“The wide array of events on the Fraser Coast highlights our enthusiastic and vibrant community.”
“Events like this offer a window into the hobbies of fellow residents, gives enthusiasts an opportunity to showcase their hobby; provides locals an outing and importantly, they attract people to the Fraser Coast.”
“Congratulations to the organisers and the passionate volunteers who have put this event together.”
On Sunday April 30th, the annual Show N Shine will be held at the Sport and
Recreation Precinct for the very first time to accommodate the nearly 500 cars expected. There will be plenty of entertainment and free offstreet parking. The day kicks off from 9:00am and runs until 1:00pm.
If you own a classic car or bike and would like to get involved with May in the Wide Bay, there is still plenty of time to do so. Head to the WideBay Rodders Facebook page for all the details.
Thanks to a very active and supportive committee, the WideBay Rodders host a number of events throughout the year, including coffee runs and Hang Out Nights at Stockland.
IF THERE is one word to describe Ken Diehm, CEO of the Fraser Coast Regional Council, it’s passionate.
With more than thirty-six years in local government, Ken maintains a future focussed vision for the Fraser Coast, understanding that Council is first and foremost a service provider.
Headlining the next Fraser Coast Property Industry Association Luncheon on March 3rd, Ken will provide a valuable update on the Fraser Coast economy, the levers that drive it, and what Council is doing to progress the liveability of our region.
“Council has around 1,000 employees and a net worth around $2.7B, making it a large business by any reckoning. The diversity of the Council business is far greater than any other in business. There is simply no other business in Australia that has the diversity of local government”.
“When making decisions at Council, it is always a balance. Weighing up the cost versus the benefit to the community is a difficult task, especially when there are limited funds
and multiple community viewpoints.
“As a business, we are always looking to drive efficiencies. Is there a smarter, better way to do it? Just like all of the small businesses here are doing.
We are no different, it’s just a matter of scale”.
It has been well documented that in the last few years, largely during COVID, there has been an unprecedented property boom and the Fraser Coast Region has been at the very tip of that economic benefit.
“The gross regional product of QLD was hit with a dramatic 7.2% drop over this period, our reduction was only 0.7%”.
“The net migration to the
Fraser Coast has been significant over the last four years. More than 18,500 people have started calling the Wide Bay Region home, and 49% of those have settled on the Fraser Coast”.
“When Council looks at its 10-year projections, they model on a low, medium and high forecast. We have well and truly exceeded the medium level and have been on the higher plane for quite a while”.
Ken will be discussing all of the initiatives that Council is undertaking to address growth into the future, including their commitment to assist with unlocking more residential land and ensuring that the infrastructure runway is aligned with our prosperous future.
Members of the public are most welcome to attend the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association Luncheon.
The event will be held on March 3rd at the Beach House Hotel, 12:00pm to 2:00pm.
Ticket Price: FCPIA Members - $45.00*, NonMembers - $60.00*. Includes Main Course. Visit Eventbrite for ticketing.

THE INTERSECTION of Pulgul and Moolyyir streets in Urangan will undergo a major revamp that will greatly enhance the safety of pedestrians and motorists using the crossroad.
The centrepiece of the $555,000 project is a roundabout with improved linkages for pedestrians.
“The installation of a roundabout will greatly improve the safety of motorists and pedestrians using the intersection,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said.
“The amount of traffic using the intersection has grown
considerably as housing development has taken place along the southern end of Pulgul street.
“It is anticipated that work on the $555,000 project, which is funded under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, will start this month.
“While the intersection will remain open during the works, there will be delays and the intersection will be closed from time to time.
“If possible, motorists should use alternate routes to avoid the intersection.”
The works include the roundabout, four raised
pedestrian crossings, six cyclist on and off ramps, footpath connections and new lighting.
“It is anticipated that the project will be completed in May, weather permitting,” Cr O’Keefe said.
Improving the road network across the region is a primary focus for Council, Cr O’Keefe said.
“This financial year Council is investing $41.3 million in roads, bridges and drainage projects,” he said.
The project will be undertaken by local company Grand Civil.

GERRY Geltch is well known amongst the locals in Hervey Bay and the K’Gari community for being a pilot for more than 35 years.
He has also been in national newspapers at times surviving plane crashes with headlines such as “cheating death”, rescuing passengers and putting their lives before his own and many other events along our shorelines.
So why would he attempt one of the most physically challenging reality shows Survivor at the age of 65?
"The reason why I’m here to play is to prove to myself at my age I can do this. Number two, show other people around my age, don’t give it away. You can go and do new different things. This is all new to me as well," Mr Geltch said.
This year’s series is returning to the ‘Heroes vs Villians’ format where Gerry naturally sits with the Heroes comfortably by his record.
He has survived three plane crashes, once off the coast of K’Gari where he dived into the submerged plane to search for his trainee pilot.
Mr Geltch was very surprised by the approach from the producers at channel 10 but admits it was great timing for the offer.
“I wasn’t a Survivor fan…..I hadn’t seen a show. The first thing I did was watch over 200 hours of previous episodes which was great training. I was probably a bit flat at the time……..but I’ve always had a crack at anything.”
“It was the first time I was away from my business and technology for a length of time in 34 years……I bloody enjoyed it.”
Speaking with Mr Geltch
after the launch party, it’s obvious that the experience has had a profound impact on him.
“I have a beautiful partner, a great family and I’m as fit as I can be, but this has really rejuvenated me”.
He has hinted at some exciting new career opportunities that have arisen since filming was completed and that includes more TV work.
(February 14) has been a long standing tradition in Christian denominations, honouring the Valentine of Rome and the Valentine of Terni who were martyred around 269 and 273 AC.
It is believed that the Charter of the Court of Love established in 1400 was the earliest establishment of Valentine’s Day being a celebration of Love. The Charter was issued during the reign of the King of France, Charles VI of France (Charles the Beloved) who was coronated at the age of 11 in 1380. Charles the Beloved was known for his mental illness and psychotic episodes, which were exacerbated by the time he was in his twenties, which earned him the nickname Charles the Mad.
Valentine’s Day evolved
over the years to become a tradition of ‘courtly love’. There have been many romance movies based around the courtship rituals of Valentine’s Day – but there have also been many horror stories.
One of the traditions of Valentine’s Day is that of the “secret admirer”. It is a day to tell someone that you have been admiring from afar, that you have affection for them without giving away your identity just in case they do not feel the same way or just as a gesture to let them know someone cares for them. Some people find this ritual endearing, uplifting and/ or hopeful that this gesture may be the start of a ‘meet cute’ (the heart of any great romance story).
However, there are some occasions where ‘meet cute’ may swiftly descend
into ‘stalking’. In summary, unlawful stalking is defined by section 359B of the Criminal Code (QLD) as conduct that consists of certain behaviours such as following, watching, approaching a person, contacting them in any way so as to cause that person apprehension or fear.
I am not a romance expert, but I would suggest that in the first stages of courtship, you may want to avoid putting in your secret admirer correspondence “I have been watching you” and probably avoid sending flowers to an address you have had to research to find, and would have otherwise not known. Also, perhaps take some advice from Glamour Magazine and do not send the cards that say “Happy Valentine’s from your favourite Stalker” or “I would kill for you” unless you have an established relationship of which they understand your attempt at humour (and perhaps identify yourself so as to not cause fear).
IF YOU would like to learn more about the wonderful wildlife of the Fraser Coast then sign up to some, or all, of the free events organised for this month by the Fraser Coast Regional Council Natural Environment team.
The events cover an introduction to birdwatching, an overview of the migrating shorebirds which visit the region, finding frogs and the Fraser Coast marine life.
“Our region has some unique wildlife,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.
“While most people know about humpback whales, less people know about the wading shorebirds, some of which fly from Siberia to the Fraser Coast and back every year.
“And then there’s the frogs and marvellous invertebrates and mammals that live here.
“The events will also showcase some of the fantastic Council parks and reserves which make birdwatching and animal spotting a delight –
there is nothing better than spending time outdoors, in the bush getting to know our animal neighbours or just recharging.”
The full list of events can be viewed on the Council website
participants will be given tips and tricks used by seasoned birdwatchers to get the most out of a birdwatching experience.
The reptiles of the Fraser Coast session will include live lizards, pythons and venomous snakes in a safe, hands-on interactive experience designed to educate and engage.
“The marine life of the Fraser Coast session will bring the sea to you through a fun workshop designed to inspire people of all ages to appreciate and conserve our marine ecosystems.
“Finding a Frog in February has been a popular activity for the past couple of years.

At the introduction to birdwatching session, to be held at the Fraser Coast’s newest environmental reserve in Barnett Road, Takura,
“At this session you will explore all things froggy and put your new skills and knowledge to the test by searching for frogs in the Fay Smith Wetlands in Maryborough.
On Saturday March 4, residents will be able to join in a Community Tree Planting event at the Doolong Road Reserve (opposite Baycrest Retirement Living).

Paul Brindley has been farewelled with a surprise performance by thirty-five students he had taught across the years, many coming from all over Australia to join the carefully crafted covert operation.
Paul arrived at Urangan High in 1996 and across a twenty-five-year period, delivered the Brass, Woodwind and Percussion program for the school.
His contribution to musical education in the region is legendary, and this surprise farewell performance is akin to a movie script.
Liza Young, Head of Department for the Creative Futures Faculty at USHS, has described the student alumni band tribute as the highlight of her long professional teaching career.
“When I first arrived at the school in 1998, Paul was an enigma. You didn’t really interact with Paul too much. He was just down in the music block doing his thing,” Liza said.
“Paul has a big personality, but an absolute heart of gold. The kids, they simply loved him.”
“For Paul, it was always just about the music and about the kids. That was what motivated him, that was his purpose and calling, and with the kids, he was quite simply remarkable.”
For the team at Urangan State High School, Paul’s contribution to the arts across the Fraser Coast and his pending retirement required so much more than a cake and a coffee cup.
“I was chatting with a parent, who had heard along the grapevine that Paul was retiring and it was her suggestion that it would be great to get some former students to pop along to his farewell and maybe play along. That was the genesis of the idea.”
“Next thing I received a message from one of Paul’s former students Lochie, who had heard about the idea from his mum. Lochie now lives in Tasmania and is studying the trumpet at the Conservatorium of Music down there. He was taken by the idea and wanted to know how he could help.”
“Lochie put a call out to some of the students that he played with, and then those students reached out to others and the idea exploded.
We started a private messenger group and the concept of forming an alumni band of kids, some of whom hadn’t picked up their instruments for twenty-years, flourished.”
More than thirty-five former students from Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Tasmania and beyond set about reacquainting themselves with the love of music that Paul had instilled in them, practising the two pieces to be played on the night.
Many of the past students were drawn to involvement, having been taught by Paul’s late sister Erica.
Erica, also an instrumental music teacher, was killed in a tragic accident at Carnarvon Gorge on 23 October 2002 during a Urangan State High School Concert Band’s outback music tour. News that shook the community.
For those students, this project held a particularly special meaning.
“Keeping the secret concert out of conversations in the staff room was one of the great battles,” Liza said.
“Everyone was very excited. The former students had made their way to Hervey Bay and held a practice rehearsal at Kawungan State School with the great assistance of Jenny Gordon.”
“When the night of the performance rolled around, we snuck all of the performers into the staff room to hide them from Paul, and I asked him just to stay out of the staffroom from about six onward as we had a small gift in there for him. He had no idea.”
“We were in the auditorium for end of year and as we concluded, Paul was invited onto stage to receive his retirement gift. The curtains opened, and here was a full band of his former students, now all grown up, some with families of their own, ready to perform for him”
“It was a breathtaking moment.”
For Paul, it is a gesture he will never forget and one that he simply didn’t see coming.
“When I finished school, it was my intention to play professionally, to make a living out of that. But it can be hard to make plans, not really knowing what your next job is going to be, so
I turned all of my knowledge and my love of music to teaching,” Paul said.
“I already had a Bachelor of Music, so I studied for another year and gained my Education Diploma and the rest is history.”
“I started teaching in Charleville for four years, then I applied to move to Hervey Bay. The best they could get for me was Maryborough and then literally two-weeks prior to my transfer, the guy at Urangan retired. That’s how it started for me here in Hervey Bay.”
For someone to stay in the same job, in the same place, for a quarter of a century, is almost unheard of now. For Paul, the answer is simple.
“Very few people get to do what they love, and if you do find that, you have to hang on to it. This is where my family was, the school was virtually brand new, with lots of support and enthusiasm.”
“I had great support from former Principal Linda Buxton and I was allowed to do what I love doing and that’s to teach kids the magic of music.”
We posed the question to Paul about his relationship with his students. Whether he had a concept of the legacy he had left with so many of them, that they would go to these lengths to celebrate his guidance.
“Teaching is a balance and sometimes you just have a personality that lends you to something.”
“At an early stage, I was always prepared to be silly. For a child, an adult being silly or always laughing and enjoying themselves was my priority. If they are laughing, they are learning.”
“So immediately there is this brake down of barriers. You’re not seen as an adult, you’re just a kid in an adult’s body. That is a connection. They loved it and so did I.”
“The students and I were a team. It didn’t matter where they came from or what they brought to the room. My students gave me a plaque that said: Therapist Mr Brindley. It was about a connection.”
“But the students always knew, beneath all of that, we were there to get some work done.”
Paul was simply amazed at the lengths the alumni band went to, to celebrate his retirement and when the curtain opened, he was simply stunned.
“I had no idea at all. I started seeing faces I hadn’t seen for so long. They looked the same, but different, it was an incredible gesture.”
We left Paul with the simple question of how he would like to be remembered as an educator and a person, now that his teaching days are over and his indelible mark on the fabric of Urangan State High School has come to a close.
“Look, I don’t know.”
“Probably just don’t take yourself too seriously and at the same time, the priority for me has always been the satisfaction of the students. Giving them the tools to make the best music we can.”
“It is too easy to be bogged down being an adult. Have a laugh.”
If it isn’t too cliché, perhaps it is right and true to end the story with, well played Mr Brindley,

THE ORCHID House
at the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens is continuing to grow in popularity with more than 17,000 residents and tourists visiting the free facility in 2022.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Orchid House was doubled in size in 2019 with the support of a grant through the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, and further minor renovations occurred in 2021 to maximise the use of the facility’s space.
“The Fraser Coast has the largest publicly owned orchid collection in Australia, with the major expansion allowing us to showcase even more of our 5500 orchids to the community,” he said.
“It is wonderful to see so many people taking the
opportunity to see rare orchids in flower with 17,023 visitors in 2022, up from 15,306 in 2021 and 13,036 in 2020.
“The orchids are regularly rotated so it is a great place to visit multiple times as you will see different flowers on display at different times of the year.”
Cr Seymour said the Orchid House was one of a range of fantastic facilities in the beautiful Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens, which were situated on 6000 year old dunes spanning 26 hectares.
“The gardens boast a wide variety of established plants of the Wide Bay and Great Sandy region along with walking tracks, an Australian bush tucker garden, a Chinese garden, a Bush Chapel, the Orchid House and a natural playground,” he said.
“The Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens are just one of many amazing outdoor spaces on the Fraser Coast, which I encourage locals and visitors to get out and enjoy to stay healthy and active in our community.”
Cr Seymour also paid tribute to the crucial role volunteers play in the success of the facility.
The Orchid House is open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 2.30pm and entry is free. Tours of the Orchid House and Botanic Garden can be booked by calling the Parks office on 4125 9700.

Having amassed over $535M in sales across Hervey Bay, the Prime Agents team are dominating the market with fresh and innovative marketing campaigns to get the very best price for their sellers.
Prime Agents Principal, Leah Quinn was candid about the last eighteen months and where things are heading now.
‘Anyone who thinks the Hervey Bay market is slowing down, isn’t talking to Prime Agents. We had our biggest December ever to finish last year and we have just written more than $14M in contracts across January’ Leah said.
‘There has been a general thought that the boom was being fuelled by a regional shift, people looking for a sea-change from metropolitan areas, when in reality, for us, it has been just as much about locals moving locally’.
It’s hard for a real estate agent to go anywhere without people asking them how the market is going.
‘If you ask ten different principals from ten different offices, you’ll likely get ten different answers. I can only speak about what we have experienced. It wasn’t that long ago that selling a house inside a month was a great result. Today, if we bring a property to the market
and it doesn’t have significant interest in a very short period of time, we know we need to review the listing’.
‘As a group, we have the largest social media following on the Fraser Coast. We invest in Realestate.com, Domain, we are big users of local newspaper advertising, we are on radio, billboards, buses and trailers. People say to us, I just see Prime Agents everywhere. That’s how we get results. Multi-channel marketing ensuring total market coverage’.
‘The best part about reaching out to Prime Agents and asking what your house would likely sell for in today’s market, is the extent of the detail we provide and it’s all free. You don’t even have to sell with us, sometimes you just want to know what you’re sitting on’.
When asked where the market would go from here, Leah was strong on her forecast.
‘We have one the highest performing and most experienced sales teams in the region, and we all agree on this, this region is powering, Hervey Bay is a highly sought after location and shows no sign of slowing down, not for our sellers anyway. We know the market backwards and would welcome the opportunity to talk to anyone about their home. After all, real estate isn’t just a job for us, it’s a passion’.
There is little doubt that Principal Leah Quinn and her highly experienced team at Prime Agents are at the forefront of the real estate boom here in Hervey Bay.
SANDSTONE-lined terraces will improve the comfort of veterans and others attending memorial services and functions in Freedom Park, Hervey Bay.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council in conjunction with the Hervey Bay RSL Subbranch, is undertaking the project to dig three terraces into the natural slope on the western side of the park.
“The project will greatly enhance the comfort of veterans attending events in the park,” Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman said.
“At present people attending
events at the park, especially our mature veterans, find it difficult to stand or use chairs because of the slope.”
The Hervey Bay RSL Subbranch gained an $88,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefits Fund to help fund the project which is being undertaken by Council’ s Open Space and Environment team with contractors when necessary.
The key elements of the project include earthworks to create three terraces which will be lined with sandstone that can be used for seating. Each terrace will have room for participants to use their own
seating.
“Stairs, with support handrails, will be installed through the centre of the terracing to facilitate access,” Cr David Lee said.
“The intention is to have the project completed and the site re-established well in advance of ANZAC Day commemorations.
“The work is based around the availability of subcontractors, so there may be periods of inactivity on site.
“People will still be able to use the park while the work is underway as only the project area will be closed.”
VINCE Main was born in Ryde, Sydney, well before the invention of television and the mobile phone. His early life revolved around playing outdoors, attending school, and sitting on the kitchen floor listening to serials on the radio. The favourites were The Adventures of Superman and Hagen’s Circus, which aired between the 1940s and 1950s.
When he first saw a television set, Vince remembers, “It was in a shop window in Eastwood, Sydney. The set was continuously left on to draw the crowd. I was ten or eleven at the time and found it mind-
boggling.
“I couldn’t get my head around how a picture could appear on the screen from many miles away.
“Many years later, I had to rent a tv as I couldn’t afford to buy one outright as they were expensive at the time”.
Vince’s first job was working as a clerk for Births, Deaths, and Marriages. Over the years, he has had various other jobs before working for Coles and then Target. In 1995, Vince transferred to Hervey Bay to open the Target store and was the manager there for twelve years.
“Back then, Target had very little competition. I loved my time at that store. Unfortunately, the store has since closed its doors”.
Vince retired twelve years ago and has never looked back. His days are occupied with reading mystery novels, piecing together jigsaw puzzles, and solving crosswords.
Vince has had his fair share of tragedy after losing his wife Ann to colon cancer in 2009. The pair had a short courtship before tying the knot and were married for forty-two years.
Vince describes this period as the hardest he has ever been
through. He misses his wife every day but is blessed with four children, twelve grandkids and six great-grandchildren.
On August 17th Vince will be celebrating his 80th birthday surrounded by those he loves.

FUTSAL: You rarely associate Humpback Whales with futsal, but that is the case in Hervey Bay.
The Hervey Bay Humpbacks all-ability futsal team began their second season last Monday night at the Hervey Bay PCYC.
One of only two all-ability futsal teams in Queensland, the Humpbacks have been welcomed with open arms by the association and players.
The brainchild of local legend James ‘Jimmy’ Hamilton, who also holds the roles of captain and coach, has brought the team together from contacts from support workers, families and players from the Football Queensland Walking Football program.
“After our first season last year, we are keen to get into it again this season,” Hamilton said.
He has lots of goals for the team, believing they can finish in the top four of this year’s competition.
“We have fitness and training sessions every Thursday to improve our football skills,” he said.
Futsal Queensland Country Coordinator Peter Souvlis is proud that the team has the opportunity to play competitively.
“It is fabulous to have them playing here, and they have some good players who enjoy it. To watch them score a goal, it is like they won the world cup. They, along with
the crowd, get into it,” Souvlis said.
He is working on arranging a game and competition with the other all-abilities team from the state to help in their development.
“The passion and excitement for them as they participate make it all worthwhile,” he said.
Jimmy is still hunting for more players and encourages anyone to come and have a go.
“It is about friends having fun and not worrying about the scoreboard,”
To find out more information about the team or to follow their progress, join their Facebook group page at Hervey Bay Humpbacks All Abilities Futsal Team.
RUGBY: The Fraser Coast continues to attract professional sporting teams to the region and making a name as a perfect pre-season training venue, with the Queensland Reds the next to set up camp.
Queensland’s premier rugby team spent the week finalising pre-season preparations before their first trial against the Western Force in Perth. After driving from Brisbane, the entire squad hit the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct training fields and Seafront Oval over the week. Reds outside back Josh Flook was pleased to be out visiting the region.
“We pride ourselves on being the Queensland Reds and not just the Brisbane Reds. We enjoy getting out around the community and seeing new faces,” Flook said. The squad has been training since November last year and believes they are primed for a tremendous 2023 season.
“We are coming together really nicely and are shaping up well,” he said. Flook is on the radar of
Wallabies selection, with former coach Dave Rennie touching base with him several times.
“It was pretty cool to see his name pop up on my phone, and to know my name was in his head was pretty cool,”
The Reds did not just train but were out and about in the community visiting local spots and schools and holding a fan day at Seafront
Oval on Australia Day.
Mayor George Seymour was proud that the Reds had viewed the Fraser Coast as a great venue to hold preseason.
“We have the Roar and now the Reds coming, and it is great for young people to see their heroes close up. This is just the beginning of a fruitful relationship with the Reds,” Seymour said.
FOR JOSH Wilson, his love of customer service and talking with people was his pathway into a traineeship with Wide Bay Motor Group. He simply hasn’t looked back.
Growing up in Canberra, Josh spent his first ten years there, before moving to Ipswich and completing all his schooling.
Technology and Music were the paths I was originally leaning towards as my future vocation, but I have always had an interest in sales”.
From an early age, Josh drew inspiration from his dad, who was a Confectionary Salesperson.
“I loved the way my dad would talk about his interactions with people and knew that would eventually be my calling”.
“Not long after graduating school, I met my partner and her parents lived in Hervey Bay. That’s how I found myself here”.
Josh landed himself a job at Woolworths
Petrol here in Hervey Bay, initially as something to get him by. Eight years quickly went past, and he was still there. A career change beckoned.
“I loved the customer interaction in that role, but I wanted to be operating in a different way. I wanted to be conversing with less customers for longer, rather than a lot of customers for a short period of time”.
Optus was the next stop in his journey, working casually for six months and focussing strongly on customer satisfaction.
“I then applied for a job here at Wide Bay Motor Group. I was unsuccessful for the advertised role, as they had filled it the day
before, but they must have seen potential in me. They offered me a full traineeship in another role and I have never looked back”. This coincided with Wide Bay Motor Group launching the popular MG brand to the Fraser Coast marketplace, as a new fun range at an affordable price point.
“I have been able to learn everything from the ground up”.
“Even more than that, I have been able to learn from so many of my peers here, who have worked at some of the major franchise dealerships all over the country. The one commonality amongst them is that they say this is the best dealership they have ever worked at”.
“The focus here on training, our internal communication and our united service to our customers is the absolute priority. It is a friendly and welcoming environment. A
pleasure to come to work each day”.
Outside of work, Josh enjoys playing the drums, something that has been a life-long passion for him.
He is also an accomplished gamer, playing professionally since his teens. He managed other E-Sports teams and commented on professional online gaming tournaments, with audiences exceeding 30,000 people, with some of the best players in the world.
Josh has a future focus on working his way up the ranks at Wide Bay Motor Group and hopes to transition into management over the course of time and experience.
“This is such a great place to work and learn. I have so much more to accomplish in my professional journey. I’m just getting started”
