WHO,S FOR TAMWORTH 2025?

Finally, a councillor proposing a consultation for the benefit or his community.

That’s a refreshing change to start with.

I would also challenge your assumption that caravaners would desert Hervey Bay without beachside access.

As a Point Vernon resident and past caravaner living within walking distance of two non-beachside parks with occupancy rates I suspect matching the esplanade, not to mention the numerous other sites in town non beachside.

There is a definite lack of Hervey Bay resident facilities on our foreshore rejuvenating

WELL folks, this is it—the final Publisher’s Point of the year before we kick off again on January 9. Time to dish out my opinions on the hits and misses of our beloved city in 2024.

It’s a state problem, and our local reps have their hands tied. Let’s hope our new state buddies and their ‘tough-on-crime’ mantra do something. But really, can we just jail our way out of this? Doubtful.

Talk of closing down the iconic beach-front caravan parks is laughable. Hedging a few geniuses are wishing they didn’t get goaded into that motion.

Our CEO has announced he is retiring. Great for Ken, not so

these areas with BBQ sites, play areas, occasional popup food stalls with a view and allowing families to bring eskies and their own refreshments; a la Mindil Beach, Darwin.

I accept caravaners bring much needed money into the region mainly to Woolworths and Coles, that wouldn’t stop if alternative sites are made available.

Give residents an alternative to Enzos to enjoy a view nature intended all of us to see and enjoy not a select few.

We are a population in the process of change with a younger population permanently residing here.

Let’s give them something to enjoy and savour.

Make Hervey Bay the envy of Queensland, not a grey nomad winter retreat.

Hi you have the Taj Mahal which only you wanted.

Keep your grubby hands off all the caravan parks tourism. Tourism. Tourism this is what the bay is known for.

Thank you,

Thank you for your detailed editorial regarding our iconic beach front caravan parks. I admire your passion to protect these holiday destinations

great for the rest of us.

This ‘community’ Facebook page is less about community and more about a free-for-all bash fest for local businesses. It’s embarrassing. Fix it. Listen, the speed limit’s 50 km/h (60 km/h in Point Vernon). Stop crawling along at 30 km/h like you’re on a bird-watching tour. Pull over, park, and walk if you’re that keen on sightseeing.

Finally, common sense prevailed in the end. Let’s stop wasting time with challenges and get moving. Up, up, and away. Great news if you already own property, not so great

that add to Hervey Bay’s uniqueness. It seems ironic that councillors talk about more community benefit.

If that’s the case, then there are numerous locations on the esplanade that already need attention and upgrading.

As you highlighted, these caravan parks fulfil an important need in Hervey Bay all year round.

I was also fascinated by your reference to the fact that some of these councillors voted for the Sheraton high rise yet would consider the demise of these caravan parks. This also works vice versa if you are pro caravan parks and totally antidevelopment.

for first-home buyers. That’s a national problem, though. We’re just riding the wave here.

This guy joined the Fraser Coast Tourism and Events board and left me with nothing negative to write. Too good. Makes my job harder, but I respect it.

An absolute stunner.

If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor. As a night-loving redhead, it’s double the fun for me. Sorry, Gympie, but this is a win for us. We’re now even closer for visitors which is great for all local businesses.

A big thanks to everyone who’s chimed in, commented, and stirred the pot with me this year. It’s been a lot of fun.

Relax and have a great Christmas…

Clearly there needs to be a balance of both.

By all means refurbish the caravan parks and have development built to current town planning heights.

This would be more beneficial to our beautiful lifestyle and not just minority groups.

Firstly, the Councillor who initiated a consultation process ought to be congratulated.

Secondly the gentleman who wrote a letter on this subject makes a lot of sense, top marks for his creative thinking, make him a town planner!

After reading your story in the Advertiser 31st October,

Ultra Tune Hervey Bay

iIt intrigues me that Council and everyone working in the public domain of promoting Hervey Bay must remember all the businesses and homes are ratepayers who pay for all the town upkeep and amenities plus rates have increased by 9% to help cover all costs.

I personally agree that Councillors need to look at options of opening up space that is occupied by beach front caravan parks on the beach front.

Ratepayers are denied beach areas, open them up for everyone.

I suggest look at Townsville, or Bargara, beach fronts are beautiful areas to walk for

• We would like to thank our customers for their support and business in 2024

• We are open and still have availability up to Christmas Eve Open: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm

kilometres with no caravan parks in site.

Encourage developers to open up bigger parks for families and caravans away from the beach front.

Highlight beach front play areas for people and families with more walkways.

I am sure if promoted correctly caravan parks with recreation areas will still flourish.

Hervey Bay is growing so there is now a need for careful thought-out planning for the whole town. If a well-planned town has all the amenities and beach activities all for everyone tourist will come anyway.

Firstly, look after your residents and business people they are your permanent payers, visitors come and go.

It is hard to comprehend that the Hervey Bay council decided to close the pool on Mondays. I have been swimming in competitions for 23 years in large city pools like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane as well as pools of small towns like Mareeba (12000) and Tully (3500) and Home Hill with 3500 inhabitants.

All of these pools were open seven days a week.

Your reasons “Why have the hours changed” is absolutely rubbish and obviously drafted

by council members who are not swimmers and have no idea how to run a pool.

If it is a financial matter, most of the pool users don’t mind an increase of entrance fees which are some of the lowest in Australia.

If you need some advice, contact councils who run their pools successfully seven days a week.

I would just like to make a few comments on those expressed in the letter from KH on November 14.

KH would like there to be unobstructed views of the sand and water from the entire length of the Esplanade.

Yesterday, we took our lunch to The Gables, and we were very grateful for the windbreak provided by the cottonwood trees.

Lunch there would have been impossible otherwise.

Also, when Gerard O’Connell was Mayor, KH would have been happy, as there was major clearing of trees, which ended up with piles of sand around the picnic tables and on the road.

I am not an expert on tourism, but I think things that attract tourists are surf, coral reefs, gambling, whales, history, food/wine, nature, and special events such as racing — not sitting in their

accommodation looking at sand and water.

Hervey Bay seems to be doing a great job encouraging sporting events like triathlons here.

Trees take a while to grow, so they need to be planted and looked after, despite conditions not being ideal and weeds present.

The rule for ideal tree cover and park space for mental health, evaporative and shade cooling is 3-30-300.

One must be able to see three trees from one’s home.

The city should have 30% canopy cover, and no one should be further than 300 metres from a park.

Hervey Bay falls a bit short. Singapore, on the other hand, does very well.

KH’s tree list needs to be amended.

Acacias, cottonwoods, and many pines and palms are natives.

The bad invasive trees are broad-leaved pepper, Chinese celtis, Easter cassia, African tulip tree (which KH mentions), camphor laurel, and in this area, Torrelliana.

Perennial and herbaceous weeds are too numerous to list.

What this does show is a great need for Council to educate the public and to recruit volunteers, who do a great job and often know as much or more than the paid staff!

Construction of a $4.3 million roundabout at the intersection of Woods, Chapel, and Madsen Roads in Nikenbah will begin in January 2025.

Cr Denis Chapman said the roundabout would improve safety and traffic flow, noting Nikenbah’s rapid growth and the intersection’s proximity to the Fraser Coast Sports Precinct.

Four serious crashes occurred there in the past four years, and the project

received $951,000 in Black Spot funding. The work includes road reconstruction, stormwater drainage, and line marking. Expected to take six to nine months, Cr Chapman acknowledged resident disruptions but emphasised the long-term benefits for safety and traffic flow.

Council awarded the tender to local contractor Kirbro.

THE HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre

(HBNC) is excited to announce the community choice winner of this year’s Social Innovators Pitch Night: The Self in Me Project, pitched by Gretchen Pedral from IG Community & Health Partners.

This initiative aims to address mental health issues, loneliness, and social isolation among children and young people in the Fraser Coast region.

Gretchen shared her excitement about the project’s upcoming events, which include a soccer tournament, photography contests, standup comedy shows, a battle of the bands, and much more.

These events, set to take place during the 2025 school holidays, will provide young people with the opportunity to connect with local sporting and arts groups, helping them to develop their resilience, self-confidence, and sense of community.

“This funding will be incredibly impactful for Fraser Coast children and young adults,” Gretchen said.

“Many of our young residents don’t have the financial capacity to join clubs, sporting teams, or purchase art supplies.

“By offering these events, we can provide a space where they can express themselves, develop new skills, and build lasting connections with their peers.”

The first events are set to run after Term 1, 2025, at Maryborough West Football Club and will be held at the West Football Stadium.

IGHCP has partnered with the Maryborough Amateur Basketball Club for Terms 3 and 4. These locations will serve

as hubs for young people to gather, participate, and grow through these exciting activities.

For those eager to follow The Self in Me Project’s journey, updates and information about upcoming events can be found on their Facebook page.

HBNC congratulates Gretchen and the team at IG Community & Health Partners on their innovative project and looks forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the local community.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

FRASER Coast Hospice is inviting the community to Stockland Hervey Bay, to hang a decoration on the Tree of Light in remembrance of someone this Christmas.

Located just outside Kmart, the Tree of Light concept was born from Clevedon in England where their tree is placed in the town square giving people the opportunity to place a decoration to remember a loved one, while raising much needed funds for their hospice.

For only $5, community members can purchase an ornament for their tree at home and also hang a decoration with a name & message on the Tree of Light. Staff and volunteers will be at the Tree of Light right up until Christmas Eve and have heard many heartfelt stories from people stopping by.

Mayor George Seymour, the Town Crier and Councillors attended the official lighting in November. The Fraser Coast Regional Council and Stockland Hervey Bay are also acknowledged for their support of this inaugural legacy for the

All proceeds from the Tree of Light help the Fraser Coast Hospice to provide fee-free inpatient palliative care for terminally ill people in our community. After just 3 years of operation, the Hospice has

cared for more than 560 people and their families. If you’d like to find out more information about the Hospice, visit the Tree of Light, call on 4334 0030 or come and see us at 222 Urraween Road, Urraween.

FRASER Coast residents

passionate about the environment and sustainability are encouraged to apply to join a new Council advisory committee.

Environment spokesperson

Cr Zane O’Keefe said the Environment and Sustainability Advisory Committee would provide expert advice and recommendations on environmental and sustainability issues across the Fraser Coast.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for two community representatives to play an active role in shaping our region’s environmental future,” he said.

“By joining the committee, members can share their insights and expertise, directly influencing initiatives that protect and enhance our natural surroundings.”

Cr O’Keefe said the voluntary positions were ideally suited to individuals with personal or professional experience in environmental and sustainability issues.

“Committee members will play an important role in helping Council develop policies focused on the natural environment, reviewing current policies, and supporting public

education campaigns,” he said.

“Additionally, they will assist in advocating for environmental policies across all levels of government and provide valuable input into Council’s Threatened Species Action Plan.

“Interested residents need to complete a brief nomination form, outlining their experience and explaining their motivation for joining the committee.

“It is a rewarding role, and we encourage community members with a passion and interest in the environment to put their hand up to be part of the committee.”

Appointment to the committee is for a maximum of two years with the member eligible for re-selection.

The committee also includes two Councillors, a Queensland Government Departmental representative and ten representatives from a wide range of environmental, indigenous and wildlife organisations.

The Environment and Sustainability Advisory Committee replaces the former Environmental Advisory Group and has updated terms of reference that were adopted by Council at a recent meeting.

Expressions of interest are now open and close on 13 December 2024.

FOR THE second consecutive year, HBNC is hosting the Christmas Lights Wonderland at the Botanic Gardens, next to the Urangan Community Wellness Centre.

The Gardens will be transformed into a magical holiday experience, featuring thousands of twinkling lights, festive installations, and enchanting pathways that will delight families and visitors.

New this year is the addition of a Snow Land, in collaboration with ComLife, further enhancing the Wonderland’s charm.

This year’s event is strengthened by the partnership between Julie Devling, CEO of the Community Lifestyles Agency (CLA), and Tony Bonello, General Manager of the Hervey Bay Boat Club.

Their combined efforts promise to deliver an even more memorable experience for the community.

Julie Devling expressed excitement about CLA’s involvement, “It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring the community together, celebrate the season, and share the spirit of giving.”

Tony Bonello echoed her sentiments, noting that the Hervey Bay Boat Club is proud to continue supporting the event, “The Wonderland will be an unforgettable experience for all ages, offering families a chance to stroll through the enchanted gardens and enjoy the festive atmosphere.”

Tanya Stevenson shared her enthusiasm for the event’s growth, noting that over 20,000 people

attended last year.

This year’s event will run from 11 to 23 December, 5pm to 8pm daily.

Entry is via the Chinese Garden, with a gold coin donation requested to support future events.

An Inclusive Silent Night will take place on 18 December.

A safe drop-off and pick-up zone will be available at the Chinese Garden entrance.

Key sponsors for the event include Hervey Bay Boat Club, Paton’s Electrical Services, Hervey Bay Baptist Church, Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, Bunnings, Community Lifestyles Agency, and the Fraser Coast Regional Council. Volunteers are also needed to help make the event a success in the two weeks leading up to Christmas.

FRASER Coast residents are invited to join free screenings of Just A Farmer in Tiaro and Maryborough, a new Australian film showcasing the heart and hardships of farming life that is backed by Hugh Jackman and features a starstudded cast.

Mayor George Seymour said the movie will be shown in Tiaro on 14 December and in Maryborough on 11 January, with free barbecue dinners provided before each screening.

“Just A Farmer is a powerful Australian story of resilience and connection that addresses the silent struggles within farming communities,” he said.

“This film is inspiring audiences across Australia to discuss the heart and hardships of rural life and the importance of reaching out for support.

“Internationally renowned actor Hugh Jackman has endorsed the film, which was written, produced and starred in by Leila McDougall.

“Just A Farmer brings together some of Australia’s finest actors, including Robert Taylor, Susan Prior, Damian Walshe-Howling, Trevor Jamieson, Louise Siversen, Eddie Baroo and Nathalie Morris.”

The project is being funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments as part of the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Council is partnering with the Tiaro Chamber of Commerce and the Maryborough Progress Association to deliver the events.

“Both screenings are free, family-friendly events, but please note the movie is rated M and recommended for mature audiences,” Cr Seymour said.

Every 10 days, an Australian farmer dies by suicide, and people in rural areas are twice as likely to die by suicide. This film seeks to raise awareness of mental health challenges in rural communities and encourage people to seek help. If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that support is available. TWO thought-provoking exhibitions inspired by science fiction and Hollywood disaster flicks are on view at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery this Summer.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Arts spokesperson Sara Faraj said Butchulla and Burmese artist Mia’s Boe’s first exhibition in Hervey Bay, Guwinganj, looks to the past to imagine the future, while group exhibition Picturing the End examines the enduring narrative appeal of ‘the apocalypse’.

The office will be closed from 1pm Friday 20th December, reopening in the new year 8:30am Monday 6th January, 2025

‘Guwinganj’ is a Butchulla word for a benevolent spirit: a guiding force from the past that helps to navigate the present,” she said.

“This exhibition explores the role of Indigenous knowledge in addressing the challenges of the future, bringing together recent paintings, including Boe’s sci-fi influenced The Aboriginal Robot series, and contemplative new works inspired by the artist’s residency on Butchulla Country.

“As part of the exhibition’s development, Mia participated in the Fiona Foley Residency, spending one week on the mainland and another on K’gari to deepen her connection to the region’s stories.

“The Fiona Foley Artist Residency is an invitational biennial artist residency program hosted by Hervey Bay Regional Gallery in conjunction with esteemed Badtjala/Butchulla artist Dr Fiona Foley.

Ms Boe said her work invites viewers to explore the rich history of Hervey Bay and K’gari.

Cr Faraj said Picturing the End, a curated group exhibition which runs alongside Guwinganj, explores apocalyptic themes through a collection of contemporary artworks spanning painting, installation, video and more.

AS THE Brolga Theatre gears up to celebrate 25 years in 2025, Fraser Coast residents are invited to help shape the theatre’s strategic vision for the next five years.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Arts and Culture spokesperson Sara Diana Faraj said the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre was the entertainment heart of the region, hosting national and international performances, award dinners, school formals, trade shows, and conferences of all sizes.

“The Brolga Theatre is a local icon that brings our region together, supports our cultural identity, and makes the Fraser Coast a more vibrant place to live,” she said.

“In 2023 alone, the theatre hosted nearly 100 performances with approximately 33,000 attendees, along with 350 events across its varied event spaces.

“Attendance figures reveal that 40 per cent of the audience comes from Hervey Bay, 40 per cent from Maryborough, three per cent

from other parts of the Fraser Coast and 17 per cent from outside the region.

“This shows Brolga Theatre is part of the social fabric of the region, while also helping bring visitors to the Fraser Coast.

“To plan for the Brolga Theatre’s future, we are developing a strategic plan for 2025 to 2029. We encourage residents and stakeholders to share their insights and help define our priorities by reviewing the draft strategic plan and completing an online

survey.”

The draft strategic plan and online survey are available on Council’s Engagement Hub website at https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/ brolga-strategy-2025

The survey, which is open until 5 January 2025, covers topics like performance attraction, booking preferences, and accessibility. Community feedback will inform the final strategic plan, which is expected to be endorsed by Council in early 2025.

Hervey Bay’s

Centre is moving forward, with the construction of the highly anticipated $108.7 million Hervey Bay Community Hub now one-third complete.

A key project in the region’s revitalisation efforts, the Hub is set to become a focal point for local residents, offering a stateof-the-art library, a new Council Administration Centre, a Disaster Resilience Centre, and a public plaza designed for markets and community events.

The Hub is being developed with substantial investment from both the Australian Government and the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

The project is part of the Hinkler Regional Deal, which sees a $40 million contribution from the Australian Government, complemented by additional funding

from the local council.

National construction company

Hansen Yuncken is spearheading the development, working alongside several local businesses for services ranging from hydraulic works to earthworks and scaffolding.

The project is located at the corner of Main Street and Torquay Road in Pialba and is on track for completion by mid-2026.

Once finished, the Hervey Bay Community Hub will offer an expanded, two-level library that is double the size of the current facility.

The new library is designed to meet the needs of the growing regional population and support improved educational outcomes.

In addition to the library, the Hub will feature a Council Administration Centre and a

Disaster Resilience Centre to help the community respond to emergencies and natural disasters.

The large public plaza will provide a flexible space for local markets, live music, and other community events.

“This project is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to transform our city centre, creating jobs, boosting business investment, and improving the lives of our residents,” said Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor, George Seymour.

“More than three-quarters of the development will be dedicated to community spaces, making the new hub a central location for learning, socialising, and accessing Council services.”

Construction began in January 2024, and significant progress has already been made.

to come,” he said.

The basement and ground floor slabs have been poured, and preparations for the level one slab are underway.

In addition, a 45-metre-tall crane – affectionately named ‘Hercules’ following a community naming competition – was installed mid-year to assist with lifting heavy materials during construction.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman noted, “It’s been an exciting year of progress, and 2025 will be just as busy as the building takes shape. We’re proud of what’s been accomplished and look forward to seeing this vibrant community space come to life.”

The Hervey Bay Community Hub is not just about providing stateof-the-art facilities; it’s also about supporting the region’s rapid growth and improving infrastructure.

The Hervey Bay area is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia, and the new hub is expected to play a key role in accommodating this growth, meeting the increasing demand for quality public spaces.

Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm, expressed the Australian Government’s commitment to community-focused infrastructure projects.

“We are delivering projects like this one through the Hinkler Regional Deal that will benefit Hervey Bay and the wider Fraser Coast for years

“The Hervey Bay Community Hub will serve as a key piece of infrastructure, supporting both residents and visitors, and creating a modern, sustainable heart for the city.”

The Hervey Bay Community Hub is expected to be completed in mid-2026, but work will continue to ramp up in the coming year. With the foundation in place, the next stages of construction will see the structure rise, and the community is eager to see the transformation unfold.

THE FRASER Coast, with Hervey Bay at its core, is on the brink of a transformative era.

As we witness unprecedented population growth, the urgent need for innovative and proactive urban planning becomes increasingly apparent.

This period of expansion presents an ideal opportunity to shape the future of our community thoughtfully and dynamically.

The Fraser Coast Property Industry Association (FCPIA) is at the forefront, advocating for an urgent revision of our planning schemes.

The emphasis is clear: we must diversify our housing and land development strategies to accommodate the diverse needs of new and existing residents, with a particular focus on attracting and retaining young workers.

These efforts are essential to balance our aging population and to foster a vibrant,

intergenerational community.

Imagine a future where a variety of housing options cater not only to families and retirees but also to the younger

generation seeking affordability and quality amenities.

Hervey Bay has the potential to lead this initiative, setting new standards for living quality and sustainability across the Fraser Coast.

The urgency to expand our

housing supply is critical.

With current demand significantly outstripping supply, proactive efforts to identify and develop new lands are vital to averting a major housing shortage in the coming years.

Such shortages could severely impact affordability and inhibit our ability to attract the young workforce necessary for our community’s growth and sustainability.

By accelerating land development and broadening our housing market to include youthful, affordable options, we can ensure that the Fraser Coast not only meets today’s needs but thrives as a beacon of innovation and inclusivity for all ages.

YOUR LOCAL TREATMENT PLANT SPECIALISTS

While not as exciting as picking out paint colours/carpet/fxtures etc – your wastewater system is an important and vital aspect of your new home.

Australia’s land management has progressively been adapting to our environment as our understanding of it increases and we recognize the need to better manage our natural resources and what we take from and return to them.

Increasingly, wastewater, stormwater and rainwater are being seen as recyclable resources rather than as disposal problems. Recycled water use can reduce demand for potable water; thus it can make a potential contribution to easing the water crisis in Australia.

CWWS are encouraging the shift towards a more sustainable future through the installation of home wastewater treatment systems & rainwater tanks.

plants in the greater Wide Bay for more than 15 years.

We service and maintain over 1500 systems in the Wide Bay each year as well as undertake more than 200 new installs each year. Our commercial sewerage treatment works have taken us across Qld from Bowen down to the NSW border.

All of our service technicians have completed the onsite sewerage facility endorsement as a part of their plumbing license. Additionally undertaking further manufacturer specifc training courses with Taylex, Ozzikleen and Fujiclean.

These Advanced Secondary Systems use a natural process to turn wastewater into clean, safe water that can be recycled on-site, ensuring that our clients’ needs are met today, without compromising the needs of future generations.

Things to consider include the location of the treatment tank and disposal area (especially if you plan on adding a shed/ pool/driveway etc later on), the service requirements and energy consumption and most importantly the reliability of the system and the warranty provided.

Coastal Wastewater Specialists, (CWWS) have been installing, servicing and repairing septic tanks and home sewerage treatment

We are not plumbers who do wastewater – we are Wastewater Specialists who are plumbers - this is what we do – all day – every day. We have our own crane truck. We are QBCC licensed (15249942) and have been in the industry for over 25 years. Members of the AWTA, Master Plumbers and Master Builders Associations.

Boat Harbour Drive (corner of Taylor Street) Pialba.

The new facility is a significant milestone in its commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services to the Fraser Coast community.

After over 40 years on the Esplanade, previously known as Torquay Doctors, the state-of-the-art facility will continue to offer the same care the practice is known for and continue to honour the relationships they have with existing patients.

Mayor George Seymour was on hand to cut the opening ribbon for the opening and congratulated everyone concerned in providing the outstanding care for patients that the region demands.

It’s a recurring story of residents wanting to book a Doctor’s appointment and being told “no more new patients.”

The growing region is in desperate need for more services with an increasing population and the practice appreciates the need to evolve with the region.

Hervey Bay Doctors are

excited to welcome their existing patients and have open books for those needing a new GP combining their existing approach and values with a new medical facility.

Dr Chris Woollard, the brainchild behind the new facility along with Dr Nick Yim, President of the Australian Medical Association, says their commitment to the community goes beyond the new facility. “Our investment isn’t just in the building. Over the past five years, we’ve worked hard to refine our systems and build strong networks with

other healthcare providers and community partners.”

“These connections improve patient and health outcomes to make visiting the doctor a better experience for everyone, and we are now also beside a great new pharmacy and QML pathology”

He also believes that the new facility sets the standard for better practices that will only enhance the reputation of the region in attracting other doctors and health professionals.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is urging residents and travellers at the Hervey Bay Airport to use the new 30-minute free parking option instead of waiting in the taxi and two-minute drop-off zone.

Director Strategy, Development and Community Gerard Carlyon said Council was introducing parking enforcement cameras in the taxi and two-minute drop-off zones to ensure compliance and improve the airport experience.

“Council launched the 30-minute free parking option in July to reduce congestion in the drop-off zone, make parking more efficient, providing a more convenient and affordable option for travellers,” he said.

“While many have embraced the free parking, some continue to misuse the taxi and twominute drop-off zone, leaving

their vehicles parked for extended periods.

“This behaviour disrupts traffic flow and causes unnecessary delays.

“With the increase in passengers since Jetstar introduced direct flights between Hervey Bay and Melbourne, unfortunately, we’ve also seen a rise in illegal parking and drivers refusing to move when requested.

“Most concerningly, Council staff have faced verbal abuse from individuals failing to follow the rules.”

Mr Carlyon said the new parking enforcement cameras would allow staff to remotely monitor the drop-off zone and issue fines, ensuring compliance and improving safety.

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of the 30-minute free parking option. It helps ease congestion,

reduces stress, and improves the overall airport experience,” he said.

The Hervey Bay Airport offers commercial flights to and from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Lady Elliot Island and K’gari.

The airport’s departure lounge was expanded earlier this year, while work on a new ticketless car parking system is almost complete.

“The growing number of passengers highlights the Fraser Coast’s appeal as a fantastic destination to live, work and visit,” Mr Carlyon said.

“By working together to follow parking rules, we can ensure Hervey Bay Airport continues to provide a safe, efficient and welcoming experience for all passengers and visitors.”

Lawn mowing,

TERESA van Kalken was born 53 years ago at the Maryborough Base Hospital, growing up on her family’s farm in Toogoom, where her parents owned a sprawling citrus property, Teresa remembers those early days warmly.

“Growing up in Toogoom was great,” she says.

“We just walked to the beach or rode our bikes around the area—it didn’t take long to get anywhere” Her childhood, however, wasn’t without challenges.

At seven years old, Teresa had a life-changing motorbike accident on the farm when she collided head-on with her brother.

Despite being instructed always to ride in the same direction, the siblings went opposite ways, meeting in a blind spot. Teresa suffered a broken femur, and her brother sustained fractures to his eye socket

and collarbone.

The accident left Teresa with a leg that stopped growing, resulting in a seven-centimetre length discrepancy.

Over the years, she endured several surgeries, including a successful procedure at 18 that lengthened her leg to its proper size.

Though the recovery process was gruelling—spending three months in the hospital—Teresa’s resilience shone through.

Teresa credits her parents for instilling that sense of resilience and determination.

Growing up on a farm wasn’t always easy, and witnessing her parents face challenges headon taught her the importance of perseverance.

“Farming isn’t the easiest job,” she reflects. “Watching my parents struggle and overcome tough times made me stronger.”

Her first real job was at Madigan’s, where she prepared and served seafood, and later she worked at a video store on the Esplanade, where she met her husband Stephen or Steve as he is better known, who happened to be best friends with the manager.

Their frequent interactions soon blossomed into romance.

Their first date was at a pizza shop, but what truly won Teresa’s heart were the daily anonymous flower deliveries Steve arranged for two weeks.

“It was so sweet,” she recalls.

The couple eventually married and built a life together, raising two daughters, Jessica and Emma.

Four years ago, Teresa faced a lifethreatening battle with sepsis.

What began as a seemingly minor pimple on her leg escalated rapidly.

Feeling unwell, she pushed

through the day, only to find herself in the hospital hours later, fighting for her life.

“My blood pressure was so low that the nurse told Steve I was just hours away from death,” Teresa recalls.

She underwent two surgeries and endured weeks of treatment.

Ultimately, her resilience prevailed, and she emerged stronger, determined to make the most of life.

Today, Teresa takes time to enjoy life.

A passionate runner, she recalls her first 5-kilometre run ten years ago, a milestone that sparked a love for fitness.

Since then, she’s completed three marathons, finding joy not only in the events but also in the training and friendships formed.

“Staying healthy and fit makes you feel good, both physically and

mentally,” she says.

“If you feel good about yourself you present better to those around you. There’s nothing better than pushing past your limits and achieving something you thought was impossible. The feeling afterwards is amazing.”

Now proud grandparents, Teresa and Steve love spending time with their grandchildren and find immense joy in watching them grow.

Teresa’s two dogs, Harper and Ruby, are her constant companions, bringing even more happiness to her days.

A self-described “happy-go-lucky” person, she loves a good laugh, spending time with friends, and embracing life’s adventures.

Her motto? “Life’s what you make it, so rip off the band-aids and give it a go.”
