Inside the box, a variety of items each painstakingly identified with type-written labels, are kept. The label describes the item, who it belonged to or who it came from. The items in the box are memories from ‘The No Name Storm’ and relics that survived it. They were collected by Arline Erdrich, an artist who lived in Aripeka. She along with her coastal neighbors were deeply affected by The No Name Storm on March 13, 1993 which hit the area at high tide bringing an unexpected 10-12 foot storm surge.

The cyclonic storm was never formally named like a typical hurricane because it occurred outside of hurricane season- it’s also referred to as “The Storm of the Century,” and wreaked havoc from Canada to the Honduras.

The annual Leopard Slam Tournament took place last week at Tom Varn Park and an impressive lineup of teams took part in the Hernando-hosted tourney, with area teams like Bloomingdale, Dunedin, Springstead and Sunlake competing. After a long weekend slate of games, Springstead was able to reach the tournament final against Sunlake, whom is one of the top clubs in Pasco County.

Vaping could be added to state smoking ban

City Attorney Becky Vose opened the March 19, 2018 Brooksville City Council meeting segment describing the hand-delivered submission of a proposal by GreenPointe Holdings, which is the property management company for Southern Hills Plantation (SHP). Vose recommended that the attorneys for Southern Hill and GreenPointe be heard, and she be directed to negotiate a binding agreement to complete and repair the water system in Phase 3 at Southern Hills, without the enacting of a moratorium at this time.

The intended Emergency Ordinance 886 states in part, “Due to the lack of sufficient water pressure/fire flow for this area, the Florida Fire Code provides that construction is not to be commenced, and new occupancy shall not be permitted. Therefore, it appears that a moratorium on the issuance of development orders, (the most common of which is a building permit), is appropriate until adequate water pressure/fire flow is achieved.”

Clearwater Attorney Donna Feldman represents the SHP Group, the owner of the majority of Southern Hills undeveloped properties. Feldman began by saying her firm is happy to work with the city, and has been attempting to do so for over a year.

She also stated that the Emergency Ordinance is invalid due to improper service, saying that she had learned about it two days prior to the meeting, when reviewing the agenda.

“We are willing to enter into a document, which would constitute an amendment to the existing amendment and restated development agreement.” Feldman said it is best to enter into a proposal that works.

There are other water issues in Southern Hills.

Because there is only a single water source, and lack of a “looped system,” a recent outage affected the entire subdivision until the water line was completely repaired.

If the water system had been looped, water service may not have been interrupted at all.

GreenPointe’s proposal addresses this issue.

However, Feldman said, “We will not do it under the threat of litigation or … a potential moratorium brought later.” She said that recently, a meeting was held in January, with Brooksville staff to discuss the intention of going forth with a productive solution, but was met with the ordinance for the moratorium.

Cliff Manuel, President of Coastal Engineering gave a detailed account of the water problems to the council.

The water pressure in what is officially called Phase 3-A-1 has been too low to sustain fire suppression, and has caused difficulties for residents inside homes in that area. The current plan is to install a “booster,” which was installed originally, but will be moved to a better location. The remedies are proposed to be completed in 150 days. The budget already exists, and is not expected to cost the city anything.

Vose’s recommendation to the council is that she draft a regular ordinance for the moratorium, which will not go into effect unless a new agreement is breached.

Council Member Natalie Kahler said of the recommendation, and GreenPointe’s position on the moratorium, “People need water, they need fire suppression … let’s get this done.” Kahler added that there was no reason to believe that the representatives were not being honest, which sparked a few minutes of contention between some of the council members and Feldman, who came to the podium

several times to contest topics of notifications, communications and the stalling of the project for over two years, adamant that they are not in breach of the existing agreement.

The council voted on two motions; the first to rescind litigation for the unfinished construction, and the second; to draft

an amendment to the development agreement, to be approved within the next two weeks.

Council Member Joe Bernardini was the only one opposed to rescinding litigation against GreenPointe. All council members were in favor of the amended agreement.

State appropriations come through for local projects

By Christine Sexton NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- Florida banned smoking in workplaces more than 15 years ago, and a powerful state panel on Tuesday backed a proposal that would add vaping and electronic cigarettes to the ban.

Former state Sen. Lisa Carlton, the main backer of the proposal, said Floridians have been subjected to second-hand vapor when they attend movies or restaurants and other public places since the devices started proliferating.

The Florida Constitution Revision Commission voted 26-6 in favor of the vaping ban and placed it one step closer to the 2018 ballot. A final vote must come before early May, when the commission is required to finish its work.

Armed with a 2016 surgeon general’s report on electronic cigarettes that shows secondhand aerosol exhaled into the air from vaping can expose others to potentially harmful chemicals, Carlton said now is the time to have voters consider the ban.

“Add e-cigarettes and vaping into the Constitution so that our citizens can stop being experiments.

Because that’s what we’ve been … as those of us who don’t vape have been an experiment for all of the citizens that are vaping,” Carlton said. “I think it’s time to clean up our restaurants, our malls, our movie theaters, so we can all breathe clean air again, which is what the 2002 constitutional amendment intended.”

Carlton recalled the story of watching her gymnast daughter work out at a gym and sitting behind someone who was vaping.

“It infuriated me that I was sitting in a health facility in a closed workplace watching activities of children and there was somebody in front of me vaping,” she said. “And I can go on and on, but I won’t.”

session where the legislature was thrust into the national spotlight by protests from a few of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas students advocating for gun control. They did pass gun control legislation in this session including raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21 and creating a 3 day waiting period to purchase weapons.

Carlton’s proposal would change the wording of the smoking ban from “workplaces without tobacco smoke” to “workplaces without tobacco smoke or vapor.” The proposal wouldn’t change the definition of smoking but would add a definition of “vapor-generating electronic device.”

Carlton’s proposal was supported by most of the Constitution Revision Commission members, including commissioner and state Attorney General Pam Bondi who said that in 2002, “No one contemplated e-cigarettes.”

Both Christopher and Brent were returned to the scene for the purpose of a “show up” identification in which both confirmed the defendant was the perpetrator.

The defendant was then taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail without further incident.

The defendant was subsequently transported to the Hernando County Detention Center, without further incident.

Laura indicated that her daughter, Rachel Marie Klevanosky, the defendant, was in a verbal altercation with her ex-husband, Bryan D., who is not residing but temporarily staying at the residence to assist the defendant with taking care of their children.

Laura stated that, at a point during the verbal altercation, the defendant initiated physical contact with Bryan by slapping his right shoulder.

Contact was established with Bryan D., the victim. Bryan indicated that he and the defendant were in a verbal altercation, which initiated after he Witnessed Leaving Business asked the defendant for a ride WIth Multiple Backpacks and home. Due to the contraband being located next to the defendant’s person, and the contraband being within the defendant’s hand reach, I informed the defendant that he will be placed under arrest for being in possession of Cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, at which time the defendant stated “No” and refused to get up out of the chair which he was sitting in. After multiple warnings, the defendant was escorted up off of the chair and onto his feet, at which time, the defendant did not allow me to detain him. The defendant at this time had knowledge that I was attempting to place him under arrest and multiple warnings were given to him to place her hands behind his back; however, he continued to resist and would not allow me to place handcuffs on him.

After multiple attempts, I was able to successfully place him into custody.

At that time the defendant was placed under arrest, transported to the Hernando County Jail, given a court date of 04/11/2018 at 09:00 a.m., and given a total bond of $3,000.00.”

SMITH, JOSEPH JAY YOB: 1975 CHARGES: DOMESTIC BATTERY Arrested on 03/19/2018 07:08 XXXX MALTBY RD, SPRING HILL Arrest Summary: “On 03/19/2018, Jody L. advised a verbal argument erupted between her and her live in boyfriend, the defendant, identified to be Joseph Jay Smith.

Jody stated she was battered inside the residence, so she fled the residence attempting to free herself from the defendant.

Jody advised she went outside and fell to the ground, at which point the defendant grabbed her by the hair and arm, where he attempted to pull her back into the residence.

Jody explained the neighbor, identified to be Kathleen W., exited her residence and yelled at the defendant to, “let go” and “go back inside.” Jody stated the defendant then let her go and fled back inside the residence.

Jody sustained minor lacerations and abrasions to her arm, which is consistent with being dragged across a hard surface (in this case the roadway).

Contact was made with Kathleen, who advised she heard a commotion outside of her residence. Upon reviewing her security cameras, she observed the defendant to be pulling Jody by the hair towards his residence. Kathleen advised she then exited her residence and intervened.

Law enforcement attempted to make contact with the defendant; however, he barricaded himself inside of his residence and refused to come out. Several attempts have been made to establish contact with the defendant; however, he appears to be actively avoiding contact with law enforcement.

While on scene, the defendant did send a message to Jody via Facebook Messenger, which said, “I’m sorry don’t send me to jail, I’m sorry I dragged you.” As sworn and affirmed to by Deputy Sheriff, A. C. on 03/19/2018.

The defendant was later taken into custody without incident and transported to the Hernando County Jail. The defendant was provided a misdemeanor court date of 04/11/2018 at 0900 hours, in Courtroom B of the Hernando County Courthouse, in Brooksville, Florida.

The defendant was placed on a no bond status, due to the offense having been domestic in nature.”

Newspaper tariffs threaten community newspapers

On March 13, 2018 the US Department of Commerce announced tariffs of up to 22.16 percent on Canadian newsprint production, more specifically uncoated groundwood paper, also widely used in book publishing. A single US mill with 300 employees- NORPAC- located in Washington State has filed countervailing duties and anti-dumping complaints against Canadian mills, claiming that Canadian producers are undercutting US mills. NORPAC is backed by a New York hedge fund.

The problem is that Canada supplies the majority of US newsprint and the tariffs will hit the newspaper printing and publishing industry hard at home.

In January, preliminary assessments of 4.4 to 9 % were imposed. This may drive the final nail in the coffin of print media once and for all, but newspaper publishers aren’t giving up without a fight.

Drilling ban could be headed to ballot

BY JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --Florida’s nearshore waters would be off limits to future oil and gas drilling under a measure that moved closer Tuesday to appearing before voters in November.

The state Constitution Revision Commission voted 32-1 to advance a proposal (Proposal 91) that seeks to prohibit oil and gas drilling within about three miles of the East Coast and nine miles of the Gulf of Mexico coast.

“These things (oil rigs) are not what we want along our shorelines,” said Commissioner Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch, a former mayor of Sewall’s Point who sponsored the proposal. “We want to protect our natural resources and our scenic beauty.”

Commissioners still will have to take a final vote on the proposed constitutional amendment before it could go on the November ballot. The commission meets every 20 years to propose constitutional amendments and faces an early May deadline to finish its work.

Thurlow-Lippisch said her proposal is a needed “statement” to help the economy, wildlife and quality of life for Floridians.

“It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, or black or white or an alien from outer space, if you get to come here, you can walk the beaches and enjoy what they are,” Thurlow-Lippisch said.

Florida law currently prohibits the state from granting leases to drill for oil or natural gas in state coastal waters. But putting a drilling ban in the Constitution would be more permanent.

Thurlow-Lippisch’s proposal wouldn’t impact the transportation of oil and gas products produced outside those waters.

The proposal comes amid debate about Trump administration plans to allow oil and gas drilling in federal waters off various parts of the country. U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke appeared in January in Tallahassee and said drilling would not occur off Florida’s coasts, but the administration’s stance has continued to draw questions. The issue involves waters beyond the nation’s outer continental shelf --- a jurisdictional term describing submerged lands 10.36 statutory miles off Florida’s West Coast and three nautical miles off the East Coast.

Former state Senate President Don Gaetz, a Niceville Republican who is a member of the Constitution Revision

Commission, recalled the deadly 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and said the goal is for it not to happen again.

“Even the perception of oil reaching our Florida beaches, on the Northwest Florida coast, brought our economy, which is largely dependent on tourism, on its knees,” Gaetz said.

“The economic damages that we suffered were in the billions of dollars.”

The region has been able to rebound in part through a settlement with BP. About three-quarters of the $2 billion the state is expected to receive will go to the non-profit organization Triumph Gulf Coast, which will direct money to economic-development projects in Northwest Florida.

Constitution Revision Commission member Gary Lester, a vice president of The Villages who was appointed to the commission by Gov. Rick Scott, cast the lone vote against the drilling-ban proposal.

Sen. Tom Lee, a Thonotosassa Republican and member of the commission, advised Thurlow-Lippisch --- while voting for the proposal --- to consider adding a definition of drilling to offset the need for a future constitutional rewrite.

“I can see a day where technology is advanced to a point where some-

one may be able to do something with a level of comfort, security and safety that would satisfy you and the rest of us, that they could protect Florida’s Gulf Coast and still accomplish the objective we don’t want them accomplishing through what is loosely called drilling today,” Lee said.

(Brooksville, FL) Join Hernando County and the Southwest Florida Water Management District to celebrate the completion of the Weeki Wachee-Rogers Park Low Impact Development Project. The event will take place at 7244 Shoal Line Blvd.,Weeki Wachee, FL 34607.

The Rogers Park beachfront, park and boat/kayak ramp was closed for approximately five months to complete a parking lot improvement project.

Led by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District), this cooperative project with Hernando County will ultimately improve water quality in the Weeki Wachee River.

"Partnering on water quality projects such as this are a high priority for us," Chairman Wayne Dukes said. "We are making strong effort to protect our lakes, rivers and springs from pollution."

Using low-impact development (LID) techniques, this 1.8-acre project will reduce the amount of sediments and nutrients running off the parking lot into the river. LID practices being applied at Rogers Park include porous asphalt in the parking spaces, infiltration trenches and bioretention with wetland vegetation. These techniques reduce the amount of stormwater entering the river by decreasing the impervious or hard surface areas. They also improve water quality by redirecting stormwater to treatment areas.

storm. Erdrich expressed her emotions through art in order to heal and much of her work after the storm reflects this. Erdrich wrote about her art exhibition inspired by the No Name Storm, “There can be no beginnings without endings. There must be death before there is birth. There can be no creation without destruction.” The items she collected from locals who were also deeply impacted by the No Name Storm were part of her exhibition.

Arline Erdrich passed away in 2011. The collection has been packed away in a box for many years and its existence long forgotten. Until chance circumstances arose, putting the box and the memories it contained into the possession of Spring Hill resident Debby Heckman. Heckman remarked, “When I came across the box I was taken aback. Someone put so much effort into it.

There are so many tokens and memorabilia, I couldn’t just discard it.”

Here is a catalogue of the No Name Storm items in Erdrich’s collection. I’ve organized it by documents, items related to Mel Pettit, storm related photographs and physical items.

The question remains as to whether the items in this box should be put on display in the community or remain packed away. Many who lived through that trying time may not wish to revisit the painful memories, but it is a part of our history and should not be forgotten.

Dear Arline, Your project “stormwall” intrigues me and I’ll be seeing it. What a collection you must have from all over the area.

Just for fun I’ve enclosed a picture of a figure I made depicting “No Name.” It has a basketry base, handwoven strips for clothing and a fierce looking clay face. It is weird to say the least, but I had fun making it. As I recall there was no lightning, but I added in just to emphasize the storm. You might say it was therapeutic to work out my feelings in doing the “creature.”

Little dog and I went next door to a 2 story house to spend anxious hours and then went home to survey the wet soggy mess.

We survived and life is back to normal, but I don’t want to do it again! At my age (81) Good luck with your exhibit and hope you get some backing.

ITEMS RELATING TO MEL PETTIT Newspaper Clipping: The Big Storm One Year Later by Andrew Galarneau, Times Staff Writer The article describes the story of Mel Pettit- a commercial captain who lost his life in the storm and the difficulties faced by his wife Donna one year later.

Mel Pettit, captain of the Bone Dry, was on a 4 to 7 day grouper run with fisherman Joe Ford. Donna spoke to her husband on March 10 by radio. Mel was expecting the weather to bring waves of 6 to 8 feet.

What he faced was something else entirely. The vessel’s owner, Richard Brooks and Howard Stewart, the gentleman who recovered it, say it likely wasn’t the 30 foot waves that did it in, but a collision which snapped the boat’s hull in half. Brooks, who was in an identical boat about 5 miles away during the storm said that a 600 foot freighter nearly collided with his boat as the freighter’s radar was not functioning with the torrential rain. Mel’s body- caught on videotape by a Coast Guard chopper was never recovered and Donna had difficulty with that aspect of her husband’s loss- both financially and emotionally.

Florida’s conquistadors, pirates and shipwrecks,

A new multimedia gallery experience at the Tampa Bay History Center

During the Age of Sail, there was only one way to travel across the oceans – by ship. The Spanish had dominion over vast territories that produced immense wealth in the form of gold and silver. The relatively uncharted Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, along with the unknown nature of weather systems – particularly hurricanes – and the ever-present threat of pirates, made sailing around Florida very dangerous. Hundreds of ships, some laden with treasure, sank along the Florida coast and in the Caribbean. Recovery efforts started almost immediately and continue to this day – centuries after the ships went to the bottom of the sea.

The Tampa Bay History Center, located on downtown Tampa's Riverwalk, recently launched its newest gallery experience "Treasure Seekers: Conquistadors, Pirates and Shipwrecks.” Featuring a 60-foot, 18th-century

pirate ship as its centerpiece, the new, permanent addition to the History Center introduces visitors to explorers who landed in "La Florida" more than 500 years ago, as well as little-known pirates like "Calico" Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny, who prowled Florida's coasts in the 1700s.

The new gallery also explores the science and technology of shipwreck recovery, showing how centuries-old vessels are recovered from the ocean floor.

The 8,500-square-foot addition includes the Touchton Map Library and Florida Center for Cartographic Education (TML/ FCCE), a partnership with the University of South Florida that will feature thousands of Florida maps and ephemera dating back to the 15th century through today.

"We're telling a Florida story," said History Center President and CEO C.J. Roberts. "Conquistadors, pirates and privateers, shipwreck recovery -

many of these things were happening not just in the Tampa Bay area, but across the state."

Visitors can learn about Florida's maritime history via the latest in museum technology, including an immersive, choose-yourown-adventure theater experience, and a celestial ellipse on the gallery ceiling showing how sailors used the stars to traverse unknown oceans.

The new gallery also features a world-class collection of maritime artifacts-some nearly 400 years old -including navigational tools, jewelry, coins, pottery and other rare items recovered off of Florida's coasts dating back to the 1600s.

The Tampa Bay History Center boasts three floors of permanent exhibits explore illustrating the stories and personalities from Florida’s past.

The volunteers from The Spring Hill Neighbors Group has organized a unique and creative fundraiser to benefit Crescent Clinic. Crescent Community Clinic has been established to improve the health and well being of indigent and uninsured citizens of our community in order to provide the best health care to our citizens regardless of the ability to pay.

Volunteers will hide eggs for you from 2 am to 6 am on April 1st in your front yard.

The group even has a volunteer bunny who will hide eggs on Easter Day from 8 am to 3 pm then knock on the door and take pictures with the children.

If this idea gets you egg-cited all you need to do is order the number of eggs you would like to be delivered by March 25th.

The eggs are candy-filled and costs are as follows: 30 eggs for $20, 50 eggs for $30 and 70 eggs for $40.

If you would like the Easter Bunny to deliver it

will be an additional $10.

100% of the profits will benefit the clinic.

The response from the community has been positive and some local businesses have purchased eggs to be delivered to needy families.

Show your child how to squeeze out the liquid by pressing spinach against the sides of the strainer with a large spoon.

3. Saute onion in butter on medium heat until onion is translucent. Stir in spinach, salt, nutmeg and black pepper. For an extra kick, add cayenne pepper if you wish. Cool.

4. In a large mixing bowl, combine half and half, cheeses and eggs.

Mix thoroughly. Stir in cooled spinach mixture.

Pour into pastry-lined pan.

5. Bake 50-60 minutes or until pie is set and top is lightly browned.

6. Let stand 10 minutes. Serve warm with mixed fruit or green salad on the side and a slice of crusty French bread.

Makes 6 servings.

The Eagles, however, came up just short to the Seahawks, losing 6-5 in a thrilling contest.

Springstead coach Craig Swartout pointed out that the benefits of playing in the tournament was the opportunity to see some different teams and wasn’t disappointed with the effort given in the championship final.

“When you play in tournaments like the Leopard Slam, one of the things you get to enjoy is seeing different teams,” Swartout said.

“We enjoy it also because it’s close. We were probably fully extended in that last game. It had been a long weekend. It was really hot and by the time we played our last game, it was really cold.

I’m disappointed that we lost, but definitely not disappointed with the effort.”

It’s no secret that Springstead has lofty expectations heading into the second half of the season coming off spring break, as the Eagles begin to make their push towards districts and the state playoffs. Springstead is expected to be one of the teams vying for the Class 6A state

championship once the postseason begins. The Leopard Slam in regards to providing some solid competition from around the area.

“I definitely think that this tournament was good for us, Swartout said. “We got to play some teams we wouldn’t get to see in our district.

You’re not going to win every game you play in. That’s always got to be your goal is to win a state championship.

I’d like to think so, but there’s a lot of variables that play into it later down the road.”

Plenty of players were able to play well in the Leopard Slam Tournament for Springstead, including Paige Pfent.

Pfent was able to go 10of-10 in the tournament with two home runs, according to Swartout.

Pitchers Kayla Cruz and Mariah Galhouse pitched exceptionally for the Eagles.

“Paige (Pfent) was 10for-10 in the tournament with a couple home runs, so she was outstanding,” Swartout added. “Our pitchers played really well and pitched well. It was exciting to see how these girls embrace to play at this level.”

Springstead baseball off to a hot start

The baseball season is well underway in Hernando County and Springstead’s club has been once again one of the top clubs in the area.

The Eagles, coming off a 24-4 campaign, Springstead is currently off to an 8-2 start to the season and return a solid lineup this spring. Springstead’s pitching staff has been stellar, with junior Jack Jasiak (28 strikeouts) is leading the way at 3-0 with an earned run average of 0.00.

Fellow teammate Kevin Tomas is also 3-0 on the season, with an ERA of 0.44. The senior has racked up 19 strikeouts in the process. The pitching staff currently has an ERA of 0.92 and has yielded seven earned runs all season.

Nick Collins (9 runs batted in, 5 doubles) highlights Springstead’s lineup this season, as the senior has already belted two home runs so far and is batting over .300. Also having a solid campaign through 10 games is senior Chris Cesiro (7 runs batted in, 7 doubles), who is batting .320 and has nine hits.

Springstead currently heads a tough Class 6A, District 6, which also features Dunnellon and Weeki Wachee, whom is 6-4 so far through 10 games. The Eagles are 5-0 in the district and are taking aim at repeating as champions. Shawn Laferty’s group has some tough contests down the stretch, with games against Hernando, Mitchell and Sunlake.

Laferty is currently in his fourth season as Springstead’s coach and has racked up 65 wins and only 25 losses. The Eagles’ skipper has turned

around a program that went 11-14 in 2014 and has not finished below the .500 mark since Laferty took over in 2015.

Springstead wasn’t able to get off to a good start in the annual Farm Bureau Classic, as the Eagles fell 9-0 to Fivay on the opening night.

The Falcons feature one of the top prospects in the area in senior pitcher Gunnar Hoglund, who has already committed to play collegiately at Ole Miss.

The Eagles are slated to also face Nature Coast in the tournament, whom Springstead faced already this season. In the first go around between the clubs, Springstead edged out Nature Coast 6-5 in nine innings.

IT manager arrested for virtual currency mining

In the past, Information Technology (IT) professionals often set up unauthorized machines in the office. It would usually be an FTP server that facilitated sending large files, other times it would be a machine running some new software that they were interested in checking out. Their employers would most likely benefit from these extraneous machines.

Some IT workers extended this to setting up a gaming server for their favorite game. Having the server on the local network gave the player an advantage over other players. The server was often purposefully overlooked since IT worked long hours and the gaming server kept them around the office rather than going home.

It is now possible to earn virtual currency by mining for the virtual currency.

Mining means that you provide computing capacity that makes it difficult for someone to fake a transaction for a cryptocurrency.

The virtual currency that you earn has real value and can be exchanged for real currency.

This means that these spare computers can be used to earn money. The costs are electricity and potential wear and tear on the hardware. The earning of money has changed the unauthorized use of excess computing power from a faux pas to a crime.

Misusing computing resources can be considered a serious crime as the Information Technology manager for the Florida Department of Citrus, Matthew McDermott found out. He was an extreme example of using excess computing power and he also purchased equipment to increase his ability to earn money mining virtual currency.

According to FDLE “The investigation was launched after FDLE agents received a complaint from the Citrus agency’s Office of Inspector General. The complaint followed an audit of P-Card (purchasing card) activity that found McDermott had made more than $22,000 in purchases between July 2017 and December 2017.

Among those purchases were 24 computer graphics cards known as Graphic Processing Units (GPUs).

In addition, the IG noted that utility bills for the agency had increased by 41 percent between October 2017 and January 2017.

The increase amounted to nearly $825.00.”

GPUs are very good at mining virtual currency and it would appear that he purchased the GPUs to enhance his mining operation.

He did not steal the equipment, but he misused it, most likely for his own benefit. He was earning virtual currency with the equipment and using the electricity of the Florida Department of Citrus. He has been charged with official misconduct and grand theft.

We use them every day. They’re critical in the workplace, airports and underground railway systems to convey workers or travelers quickly and efficiently to their destinations And they’re becoming more and more commonplace in residences for convenience or for people who are unable to climb stairs.

Yet, elevators have barely evolved since they were first invented in 1857. One walks in; presses a button to go up or down and then you get off. Between getting in and getting out, we still experience that awkward moment. You know the “moment” — you stare at the floor, the doors, watch the numbers change until we reach our floor; anything but have to talk to the people sharing the lift with you.

Things are changing though. While safe operation of an elevator is of top priority, esthetics are now an important consideration in elevator interiors and Nature Coast Installation Services (NCIS) is on track to make your elevator ride a more exciting visual journey.

In January 2017, Wade Sutherlin and his wife, Amanda, of Spring Hill, decided to branch out on their own and launched NCIS Elevator.

“It took me 5 years, working alongside a qualified technician, to earn my elevator technician competency license,” he said, “and I have to attend workshops and take classes regularly to keep up-to-date with the very stringent rules regarding the operation, maintenance and refurbishment of elevators.”

Amanda was working a full-time job until Dec, 2017, but is now actively involved with the business. She’s also a real estate investor “I’m plugging myself in more and more to assist him like keeping his calendar straight, following up on calls, researching products, also the more mundane things like invoicing, accounting and learning elevator language,” she said.

Amanda also accompanies Wade on jobs with him and works alongside him.

The couple is currently working out of their home and the garage is their workshop.

NCIS’s primary focus is specializing in the manufacture and install of high-quality, custom-built elevator cabs and they have a quite considerable list of clients, so much so they are actively looking for a business property.

Wade stated that from getting an initial enquiry about redesigning a cab interior can take up to 4 to 6 weeks.

“I start with a pre-construction meeting with the client and find out what design elements they’re looking for,” he said. “Each job is unique and it could be just one small elevator in a home or as many as four or five elevators in an office building or hospital,” he said.

Once Wade knows what the design considerations are, he makes sure the products he recommends are code compliant, affordable, and not too heavy.

Second, net metering programs may differ between the various utility companies. Building an over-sized solar system may actually cost you more because what you earn back can be less than the cost of the system.

Rather than using solar to try to neutralize your current electric bill right away, it usually makes sense to make your home as energy-efficient as possible, and then building a solar system to offset your new usage levels.

A good rule of thumb for solar is to “reduce then produce.” In terms of net-metering, it is important to consider ways to pull less energy from the grid both during the day and at night. By incorporating battery storage systems with solar power production, you can capitalize on the energy that you produce during the day by using that energy after the sun goes down.

Your power can also be available when the grid is down due to storms or other technical failures.

Finally, not all solar installations and equipment are the same. When people don’t really understand how solar works, they tend to focus only on price and what they find on the internet. When shopping

for an excellent solar power system, look to both the quality of the installation and the quality of the components.

Excellent equipment installed poorly may not be any better than lower-quality equipment installed well. If not done properly, solar can be a liability rather than an asset because of the risk to your property and a barrier to the sale of your home later on.

Solar power is a good idea for many Floridians, but there is less room for personal financial error here than in other states. If you are going to go solar, then get the facts before signing a contract. Even if solar isn’t right for you, you can still make a difference in your power bill by changing some habits and by making your home more efficient. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

The fact is that there are actually a native species and invasive species of lovebug. The invasive species arrived in the 1920’s in southern Louisiana and has then spread to other states. There are two outbreaks. The first occurs in April-May while the second occurs in August-September.

They can be a nuisance to drivers, congregating near highways and gas stations. The fatty tissue from the lovebugs can ruin a cars finish if not removed within two days.

Lovebug larvae break down decomposing vegetation, which provides nutrients to many plants.

Adults are short lived, feeding on nectar. Due to the large numbers during outbreaks, using insecticides is impractical.

Addicted to Wild Turkeys I don’t plan on making apologies for my addiction. It’s highly unlikely you’ll ever see me stand up at a meeting and proclaim, “Hi, my name is Toby, and I’m a turkey hunter!” in an effort to take on the first, of a twelve-step program. I understand that most addicts do that when they begin on the road to recovery.

But, quite honestly, I don’t want to cure my turkey hunting addiction. Fact is, I’m mighty fond of it!

My granddaddy was a turkey hunter. He’d tell me all sorts of tricks he’d use to lure a smart old tom into gun range and I’d share his delight at the telling of some of the tricks them old gobblers would pull on him.

I was fourteen, the first Spring I hunted turkeys. I rode my bicycle, with a shotgun slung across my back, out to a big timbered piece of land not far from my family’s farm. Even though I didn’t kill a turkey that day, or even come remotely close, I still remember that very brisk morning hunt like it happened yesterday.

I continued turkey hunting very sporadically with no success, while reading everything I could on the subject and asking every old timer for tips and tactics to put me over the top.

That first gobbler is still one of the greatest trophies that I have ever killed, despite the fact he was just a short-bearded jake. But, as with all game, the hunt is what makes the trophy, and this hunt was a very memorable one because I knew I had earned it.

I was sixteen by the time I hunted that jake and he did everything a turkey is supposed to do as he gobbled, strutted, and drummed while walking into range. He looked like a Volkswagen Beetle coming through the woods. I was obviously pretty excited after I squeezed the trigger and as I reached down and smoothed those iridescent feathers, I admit, I shed a tear. I’d lost my grand-

Here we are many years and many turkey hunting lessons later and I still eat, sleep, breathe, and drink turkey hunting. I hear turkeys gobble in my head immediately after I hear a crow caw in the middle of March in the middle of downtown Brooksville. I don’t believe I am the most afflicted turkey hunter that I know, even though my family cannot make the same statement about me.

They understand though, knowing that I’m likely to miss a few family events, holidays, parties, and special occasions during turkey season.

I’m most likely going to miss church on an April Sunday morning, and I’m most certainly guaranteed a discussion with certain family members regarding my absenteeism during the spring as well. I’m definitely no saint, and I am by no means perfect.… but, I AM turkey hunting!

I’ve hunted the Eastern, Merriams and Rio Grande wild turkeys all over North America and even spent a long week in Northern Mexico trying to rearrange the beak on a Goulds gobbler. But, none of the various subspecies get my heart pumping anywhere nearly as much as our Florida Osceola wild turkeys. They are by far the hardest turkeys to hunt and most apt to send you home scratching your head in bewilderment.

In addition, the middle-class son of a carpenter had been credited with such spectacular feats as feeding thousands with a few loaves of bread and a handful of fish, with healing some who were blind or terminally ill by a touch or merely a spoken word, or even with resusitating those who were thought to be dead.

Many pinned on the young man (whose very name, Jesus, means “Sav-

ior” or “Salvation”) their hopes for a liberator of the Jewish people whose land was under occupation by the Romans. So thousands — waving palm fronds and strewing them in his path during a parade through the streets of the Jewish capital city of Jerusalem — gathered to hail him.

Less than a week later, many of that same cheering crowd were calling for Jesus to be hung on a cross because some leaders charged him as a fraud — he said he was God and was destined to be king of the whole world which he had created — and a threat to the status quo.

So for many, Palm Sunday is seen as shortlived glory for Jesus Christ, the outspoken Nazarene do-gooder whose end, though tragic, was to be expected and soon forgotten.

But for followers of Jesus, who now include 78 percent of the U.S. population and number 2.1 billion around the world, the day leads to the climax of what truly is a gripping and powerful love story.

What could be more tender and caring than that familiar Bible verse in John 3:16: “for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believeth in him

should not perish but have everlasting life”?

That is the truth behind the events of Holy Week (some call it Passion Week). But neither the crucifixion nor the resurrection of the one called Emanuel (God with us) was to be the end of his story or the cause we know as Christianity.

Jesus said he would come again, this time, Christians believe, to reign.

Not only Christians but most of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims believe he will return— they say as the forerunner to announce the coming of Allah himself.

Many Jews also are looking for the return of a forerunner to announce the coming of the Messiah. It is the prophet Elijah for whom an ajar door, an empty chair and a glass of wine await at the annual Seder dinner during the upcoming Passover observance.

he progressive PC agenda of “one world government”, social justice, global warming, non-judgment, gender proliferation, no borders, minority rights, white privilege, and of the USA’s exploitation of the world’s people have become the underpinnings of the new religion of the elites. These “smuggers” have become preachers to their wannabees to “woke”(awakened) by becoming aware of the superiority of “virtue signals” of the progressive religion. The elites reject the traditional moral values and want to establish this new utopian, manmade religion, excuse me, “humankind religion.”

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, corrected a young female who said, “mankind”. He smugly and pompously reminded her the virtue signal should be “people kind.” The young audience applauded his marvelous religious knowledge and wisdom. He is one of the high priests of the new progressive religion being elected as the leader of a major western nation. After this statement, Trudeau received significant negative blowback and his spokesperson related he was “only joking.” Everyone in the audience knew what he said was meant to be followed.

Ex president Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other European Union leaders are important contributors and disciples of the new wave religion, worshiping earth and the genius of man, excuse me again, and “people kind.” These elite geniuses determine the belief system of this utopian vision.

Evil does not exist in this worldview. People in this worldview are supposedly equal. The non-privileged minority people are victims of their circumstances. These individuals should not be punished for their crimes but should be given special privileges like advancement, money and forgiveness for their negative actions. These misdeeds were ultimately caused by social injustices of the past. Rich, white, special privileged people perpetuated all of these injustices. Ironically it is these same white, elite people and a few of color, which have created this new “religion.” The elites’ revelation of a one-world-government with them being the all-knowing figures leads the non-elites to a higher spiritual life.

These virtuous social-justice advocates are the same ones that created this progressive religion to right their own past elite sins.

Somehow, by forming a “one world” efficient, centrally controlled government the wrongs of the past will vanish and humans will rise to the status of mini gods.

Science will provide the answers to prevent natural disasters by changing the climate throughout the world. These disciples of science will erase evil and ignorance and everyone will be on an equal plain of knowledge, motivation and love.

The use of political correctness will help people censor any thoughts of racist, ethnic or Christian values. This will promote the creation of a more perfect world.

The earth and all living things will be treated as sacredly equal specimens of a new world order. Humans will be “self-actualize” into more fulfilled and omniscient individuals.

Evil will be erased as will the need for any punishment. Everyone will live in harmony. Kumbaya.

The world will no longer need borders, law enforcement, armies, procreation between male and female as modern science will advance to the level of producing super bright, healthy and compassionate people. The world will become heaven on earth with hedonism being a shining guide to inner perfection. This will be accomplished by the brilliance of our past and perfect elite leaders who will direct us to this promise-land.

This will only happen if world citizens sacrifice their antiquated beliefs in freedom, human rights, guns, equal justice and happily

I have three points I want to make: 1. It appears that the public schools in Hernando County did not participate in the National School Walkout. I thank the school board, principals, and teachers for this.

2. I told my children that their job was to go to school to learn, not to be used as political pawns. I wanted them to know the basics so that they could develop to their full potential. Schooling is compulsory paid for by taxpayer dollars.

We as parents expect our taxpayer monies will be well spent to teach our children. Many cannot afford private schools or at home schooling and thus trapped in the public school system. I resent the fact that taxpayer money and school time is wasted like this. This shows how corrupt many of our school systems have become. (Diverting school funds for busing people to rallies, getting students to march for a political stand, and indoctrinating students to one political leaning over

the other.)

3. Age limits: Tony Cox of NPR news stated: “Under most laws, young people are recognized as adults at age 18. But emerging science about brain development suggests that most people don’t reach full maturity until the age 25.” Does this mean that we should wait until 25 to allow adults to do adult things: Contract, vote, sue or be sued, open a bank account in your own name, serve on a jury, get a tattoo, buy cigarettes and tobacco, buy and drink alcohol in a bar, possess and purchase guns, drive a car, and so much more?

My parents only had an 8th-grade education, yet they were successful individuals. At the end of their schooling they could handle finances, knew how to give an honest hours work for an honest dollar, knew how to treat people, and knew that they were responsible for their actions.

They had to make judgment calls. They used their “book” knowledge and applied it. However, their learning did not stop there.

My father moved houses, which was a constant chal-

lenge.

He used his knowledge and skills that he learned from school and from doing. He was no longer sheltered and had to make decisions.Now, students are to graduate after 12 years of education.

Some start college, and yet need remedial courses for what they should have mastered in school. They cannot think out of the box.

They do not know how to give an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay and do not have a good work ethic. Some continue with junior college, college, and even higher education yet still cannot function in our society. So what is the appropriate age to allow one to do things. If an individual can sign up for military duty and become a good soldier, why can’t he/she purchase a gun? If this can’t be done, then the age for all activity should be raised to 26 when “the children” are no longer covered under the parent’s health care plan. Perhaps they should be children forever.

The reason I wanted APE on my badge, which stands or All Purpose Employee, is because management periodically got hotly confused about what workers should do during their shifts and wanted everyone to be a cashier, a mixer of paint, a cutter of cloth, an issuer of fishing licenses, an on-call PLE (Powered Lifting Equipment: forklift, scissor-lift, etc.) operator, and to answer every ringing phone.

It didn’t work, because each department was its own world, and workers were often swamped enough by the demands of just one four-foot side-counter to be bothered with other areas. Oh, I was all for it—anything to keep me from loading bags of dirt into people’s trunks.

I got my numbers for fishing licenses, learned the confusion about cutting cloth, and OJTed enough to at least mix paint for the landscape logs and concrete blocks we used for participate in this “march to paradise.” Being “woke” to these new virtues and following them will take humankind to the heights of being equal to god.

Their “god kind” will prevail.

I even had numbers for the register, which I actually did for a while—and that’s another story. But I never could do the other things. I was on a mission for my department and couldn’t stop, as nor could other workers in other departments.

Late in my employment, when again Exwork was trying to make do with a skeleton crew, I volunteered to be an All Purpose Employee. My stipulation was that I had to be reassigned from Garden, preferably to a newly invented department called APE. Otherwise I would need a walkie-talkie, so when I was heading back from the fixture room with a stack of hooks for apegboard display of mower accessories but Heaven on earth is obtainable as long as we follow our science inspired wise man into the promise land. I also suggested that if they thought the badge too simian, we could add dots: A.P.E. But they still said no. So I stayed in Garden, tore my gristle with loads, and avoided other departments as best I could.

Eventually I made my own APE badge at home, and I plan to wear it on Halloween, when I dress up as an ex-loader, complete with yellow safety vest, tool pouch, gloves, and the straw hat I wore when working outside. signals of the elite wise men to be inspired soldiers in this revolutionary religion. Prayer is least, most we can do

P

rayer is the least and the most we can do Recently, my wife Cheryl was talking about the need to increase her prayer time and I was definitely agreeing that praying is very important in our spiritual life. In the middle of our conversation, she said, “we should turn our cares into prayers” and that instantly caught my attention.

I love catchy phrases and told her that I just might borrow that slogan! We all have worries and cares but for some strange reason, many times we do not consider praying as our highest priority. In fact, for most of us, it’s usually a last resort.

Similar to prayer, I’m reminded of the fire axes that are mounted in glass cases and reserved for emergency use only. Sadly, we often forget what a great price God has paid in order that we might have the privilege and opportunity to communicate with Him. It’s been said that prayer is the least we can do and yet the most we can do.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, the bridge of intimacy was severed between God and mankind and forgiveness became a temporary covering instead of a permanent removal. This infection of sin not only prevented our Creator from indwelling the heart of the individual but the restoration of our relationship was also not possible until Jesus went to the cross. The crucifixion and resurrection allow us to see t at God loved us and wanted to be with us so much that He sent His Son as a ransom for our soul.

The blood of Christ was the only payment that could redeem us.

So today, instead of going to a priest and having them to intercede and slaughter an animal for our forgiveness, we can approach Jesus Christ directly and invite Him into our life as our personal Savior and Lord.

Prayer is the deliberate act of communicating with God. We can talk with Him while we are doing our daily work and if we need to be quiet we can concentrate and know that He understands us and knows our thoughts. Prayer has been described as simply pouring out our conscience to God about our desires, needs, burdens, and everything that is important to us.

Whatever is weighing heavily upon you today is causing anxiety and worry but there is encouraging news! God has provided a wonderful opportunity to cast our cares on Him. A huge aspect of faith is believing that He is concerned with our fears and troubles and that He desires to intervene.

Consider writing down these circumstances and petitions and trust Him with all of your heart that He is going to take care of them. Billy Graham once said, “This should be the declaration of every follower of Jesus Christ. No matter how dark and hopeless a situation might seem, never stop praying. When we come to the end of ourselves, we come to the beginning of God.” Prayer may sound easy but anyone that has attempted to approach His throne on a regular basis will tell you it’s one of the most challenging undertakings of the Christian life. There are certain steps to take in order for prayer to become a serious part of our journey and it may sound elementary but first, we must have a desire to pray. Without a deep love for God and other people and a higher level of dedication we will not incorporate prayer as a lifestyle. Next, it’s important to believe that prayer is real and that God is listening. This is also not as easy as it sounds because if we have not abandoned our will and allowed Him to sit on the throne of our heart, He already knows we See HOLLAND, Page 20
