The Hernando Sun newspaper turned five years old in November or will turn five in March. It depends on what you consider the beginning of the newspaper. The first steps where you start to figure out how you go about creating a newspaper or when you actually print your first issue or create a website. In November of 2014, the Hernando Today newspaper closed. We were concerned that without a local newspaper See TURNS FIVE-ISH, Page 5

Waves, an independently produced motion picture directed by Orlando resident Trey Edward Shults, is a heralded family drama that boasts six film awards, numerous positive reviews, and some settings that may be familiar to Hernando residents. The film, starring Sterling K. Brown of "This is Us" and Kelvin Harrison Jr., was shot partially at Weeki Wachee Springs. The film features exterior shots of the Weeki Wachee sign, along with shots of characters enjoying the Mermaid Show and kayaking down

WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. --- The echo inside the gym was a welcome sound appreciated by the crowd watching young gladiators of the mat battle hard and to start the 2019 state of Florida High School wrestling season. The athletic department at Weeki Wachee High School rolled out three wrestling mats, invited 12 teams and one of those teams was Springstead High School with some of the members of the Spring Hill Wrestling Club who See WRESTLE, Page 12

Finding a gift is often a difficult task, many of the people we buy gifts for can afford to buy any of these gifts themselves, so if they really wanted it they probably already have it. One way to find a unique gift is to stay local. A gift from where you live will be unique in another area, so it is more likely to be appreciated. Local gifts are usually handmade by individuals living in your community or are the products of small businesses. These gifts connect you with your community and the recipient of the gift appreciates the hard work that went into making the product (and your efforts in thinking about it just a little deeper than pulling up your browser and clicking a button). Rather than fighting the crowds at the large chain stores this time of year, you can visit a less traveled local store to purchase a local gift. Christmas is about bringing joy to those you love, not standing in giant shopping lines and navigating through a crowded parking lot. I am much happier knowing that my loved one did not withstand such pain to buy me a gift and may have had some fun doing it. Receiving a gift which supports a local business, craftsman or artisan brings more joy all around and that is what the season is about. Here are a few options we’ve found for purchasing local gifts.
