More than 72,000 adult and child abuse victims in the United States receive domestic violence services in a single average day, according to the National Network to End Domestic Violence. And locally, the Dawn Center for Domestic and

Sexual Violence served more than 1,900 survivors in Hernando County last year alone. Now, the center who helps so many itself will receive a helping hand. The Mary Kay Foundation, a subsidiary of Mary Kay Inc. cosmetics, has given the Dawn Center a $20,000 unrestricted grant to support local survivors of domes-

tic violence in Hernando County; designating the center among the 100 agencies nationwide awarded a total of $2 million in grants through the foundation in support of October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month. "The award is to help with operaSee GRANT, Page 4

More than a year ago, the Hernando Sun reported on the efforts of Big Cat Rescue and Animal Defenders International (ADI) — agencies dedicated to ending the suffering of tigers and other big cats in many

areas of the world, particularly those cats trapped in horrific conditions in circuses. ADI works closely with Big Cat Rescue in Tampa and recently helped enforce the ban on animals in circuses in Guatemala. After banning the use of an-

imals in circuses in 2017, the government of Guatemala invited ADI to help enforce this law, as the Los Angeles-based organization has successfully done in Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru. Operation Liberty, launched See BIG CATS, Page 20

Kanye West: Sign of Hope? Does the approach of Nov. 28th bring to mind a Kanye West “Sunday Service” or a party bringing together a group of Pilgrims and their Indian friends nearly 400 years ago to start what has become an American tradition? It is not much of a stretch to see the similarities in either or both versions of Thanksgiving. At the heart of both events is/was a worship ceremony filled with prayers of gratitude and fervent singing and dancing, both religious and secular. Those involved had/have personal reasons to be thankful to God. Yet each is/was much more than an occasion to worship. “Sunday Service,” the subject of recent headlines, is not per se a holiday event — so far, at least. But the theme definitely is one of thanksgiving. Throughout the concert performances by West and his choir in Atlanta, Chicago, at Joel Osteen’s mega Lakewood Church in New Orleans, on YouTube and elsewhere, the iconic rapper declares his thanks to God “for saving me, for replenishing me, for delivering me.” That “born again” testimony is not a solemn expression in a quiet sanctuary but a vital part of an energetic and boisterous, improvisation filled celebration that could happen in a stadium, on the street, in a field, most any place where there is room. As for the Pilgrims (a term you seldom see in See TAFT, Page 22
