'City of Mermaids' may not be a city in the future

At the Legislative Delegation on Monday, November 18, 2019, the Hernando County Legislative Delegates voted unanimously to pass a local bill that would remove Weeki Wachee’s charter, resulting in the ‘City of Mermaids’ to be in name only.

In 1947, Newt Perry started the Weeki Wachee attraction. Girls performed by eating, drinking, and accomplishing other regular tasks under water. In 1966, someone had the bright idea of incorporating the City of Weeki Wachee, so it would appear on road signs and maps. Thus, the city of Weeki Wachee was born to provide free advertising for

Living far away from family has its disadvantages, particularly at holiday times.

As we kick off the 2019 winter holiday season this Thanksgiving, more than 55 million people will travel 50 miles or more to be with their family, the AAA travel organization reported.

Estimates so far will make

it the second-highest travel volume since the AAA began tracking Thanksgiving travel volume almost 20 years ago.

Of those 55 million people, the majority will drive to their Thanksgiving destination; air travelers will take second place and the remainder enjoying train, bus or cruise trips.

The Thompson family, who live in Spring Hill, is one of the majority of Thanksgiving

holiday travelers who drive to their Thanksgiving celebration destination.

“We have three young children and a dog,” said 39-year-old mom Emily.

“Going by car is by far the most convenient way for us.”

Connor Morgan has been playing baseball for Hernando High since he was a freshman. He also explored other sports. As a sophomore, Connor played soccer and at the beginning of his senior year, he played tight end and defensive linemen on the Leopards football team.

“Soccer definitely helps out with footwork, being a little more coordinated with my feet and football makes me stronger. It all correlates together as far as athleticism goes and moves on to baseball,” Connor said.

Connor joined the baseball team in his freshman year as well, playing under coach Tim Sims, as did his father Matt Morgan.

“He’s taught me everything I know about baseball,” Connor said.

Many government organizations have started to add marketing professionals to their staff. In some ways it is understandable that these organizations have a desire to make sure that they can highlight the successes that the organization has achieved. They want to control the narrative to make sure that small issues do not get blown out of proportion.

Governments and governmental agencies having their own marketing staff means the people's money is being spent on convincing the people that their money is being well spent. This is municipalities, public schools, law enforcement, governmental agencies, state government etc. All the public institutions that are supposed to represent us all are spending our money to shape our perceptions.

It is important that people have an accurate understanding of what is going on in the government and agencies that they fund. You can think of the government as a giant monopolistic corporation, you have no choice you can't switch to being governed by a different government except in certain circumstances and at certain times. There's no competition for the government, so we need the government working as efficiently as possible.

You could think of different governments and agencies as just different organizations within the larger company.

Could you imagine if the accounting department hired a marketing department to try to convince the rest of the business how great of a job they're doing? The accounting department would get frustrated because people never hear about the good things that they're doing and the only time they are noticed is when something is wrong. It is easy to imagine that hiring a marketing team to market internally in a company would not end well for the person who See OP-ED, Page 6

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) — A Florida Walmart has been evacuated after a person was found inside the crawl space above its ceiling.

News outlets report the New Port Richey store was evacuated Tuesday morning as Pasco County deputies worked to get the person out.

A sheriff's statement says the person appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance.

Deputies say they used a stun gun while getting the person out of the crawl space. It's unclear if the person was shocked with the weapon.

An investigation is ongoing.

Authorities didn't immediately release details on the involved person, including their gender or whether they suffered any injuries. It's unclear how long the evacuation lasted.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Officials say they expect 1.75 million travelers to pass through Florida's busiest airport during the Thanksgiving holiday season.

Officials at Orlando International Airport on Monday said they expect traffic to increase 6% over the 12-day holiday season compared to last year's holiday season.

Airport officials say the busiest day will be on the Saturday after Thanksgiving when almost 170,000 passengers will pass through the airport.

12 Florida utilities break ground on solar panel project ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A dozen municipal utilities in Florida are breaking ground on one of the largest municipal solar projects in the nation.

The utilities on Monday broke ground in the Orlando area for the project which will have 900,000 solar panels installed at two sites.

Jacob Williams, the CEO of Florida Municipal Power Agency, a wholesaler, says the utilities can make solar power more affordable by working together.

When it is finished, the project is expected to be able to power the equivalent of 45,000 Florida homes.

The municipalities involved are in Alachua County, Bartow, Fort Pierce, Homestead, Jacksonville Beach, Key West, Kissimmee, Lake Worth Beach, Ocala, Orlando, Wauchula and Winter

Governor’s “Bolder, Brighter, Better Future” budget Gov. Desantis has recommended a $91.4 billion budget for the FY 20202021, ahead of the legislative session which begins in January. The budget recommends $480.5 million in savings – such as administrative efficiencies and elimination of earmarks.

The budget places $5.6 billion in total reserves, including $1.4 billion of General Revenue, which is more than 6 percent of the total budget and more than $200 million more than the current year budget.

The budget also includes more than $300 million in tax relief, including a $56 million 8-day Back to School Sales Tax Holiday, a 10-day Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday and property tax relief of over $247 million.

The DeSantis budget recommendation focuses on education, including $22.9 billion for the Florida Education Finance Program (FEDP), an increase of over $1 billion.

This includes over $900 million to recruit and retain the best classroom teachers and principals in Florida.

Over $600 million is included to raise the minimum salary for full-time classroom teachers to $47,500, which would provide more than 101,000 teachers with a pay raise. Additionally, $300 million is recommended for the Florida Classroom Teacher and Principal Bonus programs.

The budget invests $25 million in key workforce development initiatives: $10 million for the Pathways to Careers Opportunities Grant Program, $10 million for the Work Florida Student Success Incentive Fund at State Colleges and $5 million for the Work Florida Student Success Incentive Fund at District Postsecondary Programs.

The budget recommends an increase of funding of more than $22 million for Florida college and nearly $24 million for Florida universities, all while maintaining no increase in tuition.

Environment The budget includes more than $625 million in recurring funding for Everglades restoration and the protection of vital water resources, positioning Florida to be able to reach the Governor’s goal of investing $2.5 billion over four years.

The budget also invests $50 million in beach nourishment to address Florida’s critically eroded shorelines, nearly $9 million in coral reef protection funding, as well as $154 million to protect Florida’s prized properties and water: $100 million for the Florida Forever Program and $54 million in new funding for state parks.

Health and Human Services Over $54 million is recommended to continue fighting the opioid epidemic, and $17 million is provided in new mental health and substance abuse funding.

In an effort to increase accountability, the Bolder, Brighter, Better Future budget invests over $97 million to provide funding for services to children and families through Florida’s child welfare system.

The budget provides $6.4 million in new funding to support the Office of Public and Professional Guardianship, as well as $10 million in funding to enrich the needs of seniors in Florida’s communities and enhance the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia and ending abuse, neglect and exploitation of seniors.

To ensure Florida’s veterans are receiving the care they deserve, the budget invests $18.2 million for the completion of the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Lucie County and the Lake Baldwin State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Orange County, as well as $6.7 million for capital improvements, equipment updates and additional nursing staff for Florida’s existing state veteran nursing homes.

Transportation and Economic Development The budget provides $387 million to fully fund Workforce and Affordable Housing Programs: $119.8 million for the State Apartment Incentive Loan (SAIL) Program and $267.2 million for the State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) Program.

As Florida’s population continues to increase, key investments must be made to handle this growth and ensure

continued efficiency. The budget provides $8.8 billion for the State Transportation Work Program, including $2.8 billion for highway construction, $865.7 million in lane resurfacing and $436.2 million in scheduled repairs and replacement of bridges.

The Bolder, Brighter, Better Future budget includes $50 million for the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund to provide funding for job training and public infrastructure projects that support growth and employment in Florida.

Hurricane Recovery For the two most recent hurricanes to strike Florida, Irma and Michael, the State of Florida is projected to spend over $1.9 billion on hurricanerelated expenses - $627.8 million for Hurricane Irma and $1.3 billion so far for Hurricane Michael.

The Bolder, Brighter, Better Future budget includes $25 million through the Hurricane Michael Recovery Grant Program for the repair and replacement of critical infrastructure and to improve the capacity of emergency services.

Public Safety Early in his term, Governor DeSantis directed Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Commissioner Rick Swearingen to develop a threat assessment strategy to identify and prevent threats of mass violence.

Building on this, the budget includes over $4.5 million to implement the first Statewide Behavior Threat Assessment strategy in the country.

The budget also invests more than $14.5 million to expand and enhance FDLE’s crime databases that the department uses daily to investigate crimes and apprehend criminals.

Governor DeSantis is recommending over $89.7 million and additional staffing at the Florida Department of Corrections for needed improvements, including retention bonuses and a pilot program to transition correctional officers from a 12-hour shift to an 8.5-hour shift.

Elections Security With the 2020 elections getting closer, the Bolder, Brighter, Better Future budget recommends $6.6 million for state-level election oversight activities, with a focus on cybersecurity enhancements to Florida’s election system.

Included in this funding is $1.3 million for ten positions dedicated to cyber security who will provide local Supervisors of Elections with support and recommendations to combat cyber threats. Also included is $1.4 million for voter registration list maintenance services and voter outreach through the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).

Patients drawn to smokeable medical marijuana Christine Sexton News Service of Florida TALLAHASSEE --- More than 1.82 million ounces of smokable medical marijuana were ordered for 128,040 patients over a six-month period, a new state report shows.

That translates to 113,922 pounds, or 57 tons, of flower marijuana.

The report, compiled on behalf of the state Board of Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Medicine, shows that 44 percent of 291,865 patients certified to use medical marijuana as of Sept. 30 are smoking it.

While the report tracks data on medical marijuana for the 12-month period between Oct. 1, 2018 and Sept. 30, 2019, the data for smoking marijuana only tracks use of the drug for a six-month period. That’s because it didn’t become legal to smoke medical marijuana in Florida until March.

“I thought it would be more,” medical-marijuana lobbyist Ron Watson said of the number of patients who smoke cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Florida voters in 2016 approved a constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana in the state, but lawmakers initially banned smokable marijuana. That changed after Gov. Ron DeSantis took office in January and pushed See STATE NEWS Page 3

Preliminary revised coastal Flood Insurance Rate Maps issued for Hernando County The Hernando County Zoning Department announces that the preliminary revised coastal Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Hernando County have been issued.

These preliminary FIRMs were developed through a partnership between the Hernando County community and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

They are based on updated modeling data and show coastal flood hazards more accurately than previously adopted maps.

Changes in the flood zones shown on the FIRM may affect whether flood insurance is required and the cost of flood insurance premiums once the final FIRMs have been adopted. However, the preliminary

FIRM will not change your current flood insurance premium. Your premium will continue to be based on the official FIRM currently in effect for your community.

HCUD to hold open house on expansion/upgrade of Airport Water Reclamation Facility

The Hernando County Utilities Department (HCUD) is currently in the design phase for an upgrade and expansion to the existing Airport Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located in the Brooksville Airport industrial park on Downwind Way. Residents are invited to attend an open house on December 3, 2019 from 4 – 6:30 p.m. at the HCUD Building, located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard to ask any questions and provide public comment on this project.

This property was zoned in October 1993 for a Public Service Facility Overlay and the WRF began operation in October 1999.

The current upgrade and expansion will be constructed at the existing WRF site, on the north end of the property, and will increase its capacity from 3.5 to 6 million gallons per day (MGD). Work is expected to be complete by 2023.

This project is necessary to meet the standards of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Weeki Wachee Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP), to remove the outdated Spring

Hill WRF from service, and to accommodate growth in the area.

All WRFs within the BMAP area are required to treat wastewater for total nitrogen levels of 3 milligrams per liter or less. Filtration is not required by regulation but will be included in the project to ensure a higher level of treatment.

All new treatment processes will be built within the existing plant footprint at the north end of the property. Only the new reclaimed water recharge ponds will be constructed south of the existing facility during this project (see map below). These ponds will be built to allow reclaimed water to filter into the ground and recharge the aquifer, helping to maintain minimum flows and levels in Hernando County lakes and springs. In many communities this reclaimed water is often used to irrigate parks, golf courses and residential lawns.

An undisturbed natural tree buffer will be left along the south, east and west sides of the site. The south buffer will be approximately 120 feet, more than twice the required 50 feet.

Additionally, the existing WRF has a scrubber (odor control system) at the point where sewer gases are released when sewage is exposed to the atmosphere. This point is located 7/10th of a mile north of the southern property line and will remain in its current location.

Gases that cause odor are currently being controlled by the scrubber.

This existing scrubber is capable of treating any additional gases that may be generated by this planned expansion. No chlorine gas is used at this location. The new treatment process is designed to minimize any aerosol productions and to ensure there are no detectable odors leaving the property. There have been no documented health issues among WRF staff who are onsite daily.

Patients can use medical marijuana to treat 10 specific conditions, such as cancer, HIV, AIDS and post-traumatic stress disorder. Additionally, patients who suffer from conditions that are the same kind as the 10 specific conditions, patients who have terminal illnesses and patients who suffer from chronic nonmalignant pain can qualify for medical marijuana.

Some patients have more than one qualifying condition, and patients can be certified for low-THC cannabis or types of marijuana that can make them feel high, or both.

Most of the patients who qualified, or 162,277, had just one condition. A small number of patients, or 5,644, suffered from four or more qualifying conditions, the report showed. Most patients, 34 percent, qualified for medical marijuana for treatment of non-malignant pain, followed by the broader “same kind” category, 29 percent, and post-traumatic stress disorder, 22.6 percent.

Overall, 1,487 physicians certified patients for medical marijuana use during the 12-month period the report examines. Nine percent of those physicians are responsible for more than half --- or 61 percent --of the certifications.

A draft version of the report released this summer caused concern among some physicians who serve on the Board of Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Medicine. They expressed worries that medical marijuana was going to become similar to the state’s pill-mill crisis.

But Watson said that isn’t the case. He contended it’s often easier for physicians to refer patients to doctors they know are willing to certify for medical marijuana than to certify the patients themselves.

“It’s not a churning process, I would argue it’s the way the system is set up,” he said.

For instance, Watson said physicians are reluctant to discuss medical marijuana options if patient visits are billed to insurance companies. That’s because medical marijuana treatment isn’t covered by policies, even if patients asks physicians about the treatment option.

“It will come back to bite them,” Watson said, noting that one physician he knows has established a separate entrance in her medical office for medical marijuana patients to use out of an abundance of caution.

“It’s just easier to refer to the person down the street,” Watson said.

The report also said 257,381 patients --- or 88 percent --- were qualified for medical marijuana by just one physician, rather than multiple physicians.

The report is based on data from the Medical Marijuana Use Registry which contains information about patients and physicians who certify patients.

It also relies on information from the Division of Medical Quality Assurance licensure database, which contains the licensure data for all licensed practitioners, as well as the practitioner profiles for allopathic and osteopathic physicians.

Members of the Board of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine’s Physicians Certification Review Panel will review the report --- and discuss recommendations to the Legislature --- at a Dec. 5 meeting in Altamonte Springs.

Commissioner John Mitten asked Stratton about the timing of the request. Stratton replied that the Interlocal meeting was scheduled after the most recent School Board meeting Oct. 22, 2019, when the decision to approach the BOCC was made.

The issue is time, Stratton said.

The sooner the district can begin collecting funds, the more it will have on hand for building needs.

Holcomb listed the names of new or expanding housing developments that have been approved for construction. Hernando County’s population is expected to increase from 165,000 to 285,000 in the next 40 years, he said.

Holcomb said he understood the School Board’s focus. His focus is the County as a whole, including schools. Because of new guidelines from Tallahassee, builders are now required to use nitrogen-reducing septic tanks, which increases their cost. Asking builders to pay the impact fee the district requests would be unexpected and burdensome.

Holcomb’s compromise is to add $1,000 to the school’s portion of the impact fee beginning October 1, 2020 and increasing again the following year to reach the 2005 rate. A letter from the Chamber of Commerce recommended an increase of $1,043.

Comparing impact fees among the neighboring counties, especially Pasco, Holcomb said that builders will go where it’s more attractive.

Mitten said the higher impact fees in Pasco have not slowed growth.

Dukes suggested the school district campaign for another HalfCent Sales Tax initiative, making it one cent that is designated for the schools’ needs. “Let the people decide, ” Dukes said, by putting it on a referendum.

“We have two ways to pay,” Stratton said. “One, through impact fees and raising money there, or two, through debt.”

The local bill was introduced by State Representative Blaise Ingoglia, who explained the reasoning behind its creation. The other members of the Legislative Delegation, Sen. Wilton Simpson of ( R - Trilby) and Rep. Ralph Massullo (R Lecanto) then heard the allegations of problems with the city’s finances, election practices and general governmental transparency.

Ingoglia asserted at the meeting that Weeki Wachee has demonstrated issues with finances and election rules.

Ingoglia added that he experienced difficulty in ascertaining the exact population of Weeki Wachee and certain financial publications, highlighting a lack of transparency.

Ingoglia also mentioned a possible conflict of interest, as all of the city’s elected officials are employees of the State Park, and have a responsibility to engage in business on the same land they are charged with protecting. Other election irregularities include two officials who do not live within the city limits, and that regular elections have not been held. The election issue brought the question by Ingoglia, “If you’re not duly elected, how can you duly tax someone?”

A 2014 audit quoted

by Ingoglia declared Weeki Wachee in a “state of financial emergency.” The city is reported to be $1-2 million in arrears in legal fees, and “all of the taxing of the city… and none of it goes to the benefit of the city.”

The bill will not affect the springs or the state park. Ingoglia presented the bill with caution,

advising, “I will do some more due diligence and try to get some more information, but it has been very difficult to get information from the city of Weeki Wachee…

We may even find information that may change our minds.”

Shannon Turbeville has been a vocal activist in protecting the natural resources of the Weeki Wachee springs and river. He has been instrumental in policy changes which has resulted in fewer rented kayaks on the river, as well as the banning of disposable items by river visitors, such as food wrappers and drink containers.

Turbeville addressed the delegates, adding that there are no residential addresses within the city limits, and that the city officials who reside in the city do so by living in the state park, and do not pay ad-valorem taxes. Turbeville also stated that the city has not held an election in 15 years, and that the Supervisor of Elections has not overseen the process, and reiterated that the city provides no services, yet collects taxes.

“Put this city out of its misery, and remove this unnecessary layer of government and taxation,” said Turbeville.

City of Weeki Wachee Attorney Joe Mason spoke to the delegation, citing “misinformation” with regard to the election issues. Mason explained that the incumbent officials simply have had no challengers, and that the city charter did not require an election in such a case.

Information was not available about the itemization of legal fees.

Weeki Wachee’s charter was signed in 1966.

According to census data, the city’s population peaked in 1990 with 53 residents. It currently reports 12 as of 2010.

Tampa Bay Extreme Adventure Course gets extension on current licensing agreement

by LISA MACNEIL lisa@hernandosun.com Tampa Bay Extreme Adventure Course LLP (TBEAC) has requested a six-month extension of their existing license agreement to provide additional time to formulate a lease and/or purchase value and methodology to effectuate the sale of the property and facilities at 6440 Cedar Lane, Brooksville. (The park formerly operated by TreeUmph!) The board approved unanimously on Nov. 19, 2019. The county would like to sell the property to TBEAC in order to put it back on the tax rolls, but TBEAC is hesitant to purchase the property. “We need to make sure we’re at a sustainable revenue model to make it (worth buying the property) … if it takes us five more years to get to that point, then I’m ok with that,” said Paul Kent with TBEAC during an Oct. 2019 commission meeting.

Gas prices also play an important part. Even though gas prices have been fluctuating of late, at an average cost of $2.36 a gallon in Florida, it’s cheaper than the national average at this time last year — giving us all a few extra dollars to spend.

For the Thompson family, it’s the sheer convenience that clinches taking a car trip to be with family and friends at Thanksgiving, even though it’s a long journey of about 1,400 miles.

“This is the second time we’ve driven to New York State for Thanksgiving,” said Emily. “We leave at about 3 a.m. in the morning and take turns to drive so we can go directly there.”

The Thompsons’ children are ages 2, 6 and 11 years old and good travelers.

“Thank goodness,” said Emily, “the journey takes about 18 hours in all.”

Emily explained that a car trip is the best solution for them because it would be prohibitive for them to fly.

“This way we avoid the high cost of 5 airline tickets, baggage fees and all the hassle at airport security, plus we would have to pay for our pet dog to go into a kennel while we’re away,” she said.

Although cost plays an important role in some families’ holiday travel options, the amount of time spent driving and the amount of wear and tear on both you and your vehicle should also be taken into consideration.

Another Spring Hill family, the Johnsons, prefer to fly for their Thanksgiving holiday.

“Our family live in Seattle and to drive there for a weeklong visit is just not feasible,” said 64-year-old James Johnson. “We’re not spring chickens anymore and the drive would be torturous for me and my wife, Joanne,” he said.

James said he starts researching low cost airfares about 10 weeks before Thanksgiving and

locks in the ticket price well in advance.

“I also choose to fly on a less busy day like a Wednesday,” he said.

“This is the best way to get top value price and not wait until ticket prices spike closer to the holiday date,” he added.

But, said James, “travelers should also look for hidden charges for things like carry-on bags, reservation changes, booking on the phone vs. online, in-flight wi-fi or selecting a specific seat.”

A frequent flier, James also said he saves his accrued reward miles to maximize their worth at holiday times.

Third choice as a travel option comes rail travel. According to the AAA, only 1.49 million people will take the train.

Mary Evans, of Ridge Manor, says she would rather travel by train and bring her car along with her.

“I’m retired so I’m really flexible when it comes to holiday travel,” she said. “Amtrak offers an excellent Autotrain service so I can bring my car along with me wherever I go.”

Mary, whose family live in Philadelphia, said the train is the best choice for her.

“I’ll be travelling

Mary also added that there is no security screening or mandatory seatbelts and was free to roam the train whenever she wished. “When people say flying is much quicker, they often

don’t take into consideration the time you have to arrive at least an hour before takeoff, queuing up for security screening, runway taxiing at touchdown, disembarkation and traveling to their destination,” she said. “I can also bring two bags and two personal items without having to pay extra,” she added.

According to the Amtrak website, special deals include “Buy one ticket, get one free;” Autotrain rates from $89; and 10 to 20 percent dis-

counts for Veterans and Seniors.

Whatever method of travel one chooses, it’s well worth spending some time weighing up all the options for transportation. Each form of travel has its benefits and drawbacks so your ultimate decision will always be based on what best suits you and your fellow companions.

Tangerine Drop is back!

The Brooksville Tangerine Drop started in 2001 as a way to celebrate Hernando's historic tangerine industry. Oranges and more specifically tangerines were one of the major industries in the area. About a half century ago almost all the prominent citizens also owned orange groves.

Bankers, lawyers, and doctors owned groves.

Wayne Vutech was a leader in a group that wanted to create an event which highlighted the tangerine. They decided that they would drop a tangerine on New Year's Eve. The logistics of how to accomplish this seemed daunting, so rather than sliding a ball down a pole they decided to winch down a weather balloon.

Wayne looked for where he could purchase a weather balloon for the event. He wound up locating a weather balloon for sale in North Carolina. He drove up to North Carolina and attempted to locate the place by the directions he had been given. He was driving across a farm for what seemed to Wayne to be an excessive amount of time when he finally managed to locate and purchase the weather balloon.

He brought the weather balloon back to Brooksville and they had the first Tangerine Drop.

In 2009 they paused the event, because they were having difficulty getting volunteers. That was the year that dynamic and long time volunteer Julia Jenkins had to stop because of her health.

The eight foot fiberglass tangerine in the storage behind Jerome Brown Community Center needs to be painted and some of the piping that it slides down is missing. It will be necessary to refabricate some of the piping.

The New Year's Eve Tangerine Drop event is planned to last from 9pm to midnight. It will be a family friendly event and will be held by the Mining Association behind Bud McKethan Park. Updates will be provided weekly until the event is held.

Here is his interview and unique story he shared with reporter, Jessica Williams.

••• Piano lessons, drums, violin, guitar lessons, marching band, saxophone, clarinet; many of us, as kids, have either played an instrument or attempted to play one.

Me? I took piano lessons for 7 years, from an older lady who lived on an old country dirt road.

I quit playing because it “wasn’t cool” anymore. To this day, I unfortunately have not touched the piano again.

But although I didn’t return to the piano, I recently discovered how those piano lessons would teach me a valuable lesson… and show me just how small this world really is.

Ahead of their performance at Sertoma Youth Ranch on Nov. 29 for the Thanksgiving Bluegrass Festival, I had an interview with Appalachian Road Show’s Jim VanCleve. VanCleve plays the fiddle for this five-man powerhouse acoustic band. He is a well-known music producer and Grammy-nominated fiddler. He and his fellow bandmates bring to the table a mountain of talent, Grammy-Nominated and Grammy-Award winning accomplishments and incredible acoustic skills with each of them playing a different acoustic instrument. The Appalachian Road Show delivers a performance which is heavily-soaked in Appalachian Mountain aesthetic, heritage, and narrative while on stage, while singing songs which are embedded with timeless and soulful lyrics.

Along with Jim VanCleve, the band members include: Barry Abernathy, a highly accomplished and well-known banjo player from apple country in Georgia. Barry’s unique trait is that he was born with only a thumb and part of an index finger on his left hand.

Darrell Webb, whose roots are in the coal country of West Virginia.

He is a very successful multi-instrumentalist and vocalist.

Todd Phillips, a highly talented double-bassist: he has multiple acoustic-instrumental recordings and has won a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.

Zeb Snyder, a talented multi-instrumentalist to include guitar, mandolin, dobro, and bass. He is the guitarist for Appalachian Road Show.

Morning Coffee Chat with Jim VanCleve: A bit intimidated by Jim’s celebrity status, I will admit my nerves were dancing all over the place.

star fiddler who toured and shared the stage with country music star Josh Turner for several years.

After a couple cups of coffee (and 3 cups for Jim), I settled down for his interview. Jim called me from his music studio in Nashville.

We started from the beginning...

“I was about six or seven years old when I was handed my first fiddle,” he said, “before then I would watch my grandpa play small-town gigs. My grandpa was a preacher down in Englewood, Florida.”

Jessica: “That’s very interesting. I admire that. Are you from Florida?”

Jim: “Yes. I was born in Sarasota,” he said, “But I actually grew up in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina. Almost all of us in the Appalachian Road Show grew up or have roots in different parts of the Appalachian Mountains.”

Jessica: “That’s so unique to have that in common. After moving from Florida, did you keep playing the fiddle?”

Jim: “Actually no. I had taken a break from it and put it on the shelf so to say. But when I was about 11 years old, my grandfather came to visit us in North Carolina. I had not played the fiddle in years but there was this local church picnic. My grandpa and my dad encouraged me to join in with the fiddle to play there. So I did. And ever since, I haven’t put it down. It’s just something that has always been a part of me. I have to add that my family was very into music. My grandpa and my dad were my heroes and I was encouraged by them a lot. My grandpa even carved/made his own dulcimers and acoustic instruments.”

And before that, I was nearby at the Strawberry Festival performing with Josh Turner.

Jessica: “Do you have a signature food or refreshment you gravitate towards in the area?”

Jim: “I do. When I was performing with Josh at The Strawberry Festival a few years ago, we had the best devil crabs. They were ridiculous! Our band leader was from Tampa, and he had arranged for them to be brought in. They were gone within minutes. It was crazy. So yes, if time allows, I will grab some of those while I’m there (laughing). And I do love Cuban sandwiches too.”

Things are looking good for the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend with partly sunny skies for Thursday through Saturday and highs of 75 to 80 degrees.

Another cold front will slide across our area Saturday night bringing a chance of rain and dropping temperatures to 70 during the day on Sunday and 48 by Sunday night.

We kick off the new week with sunshine for Monday and Tuesday with highs of 70 to 75. We have a chance of showers the day before Thanksgiving but it is a little too early to tell if it will stick around into turkey day. I will keep you updated this week on our Facebook weather page which is Tampa Bay Weather Watch. The hurricane season will end quietly for us on November 30th, the big threat in the winter time is isolated tornadoes and damaging wind with strong fronts moving in from the Gulf of Mexico.

I love the sun and here is a fact that kind of freaks me out. The sun set in Barrow Alaska on Monday and will not rise again until January 23rd, 66 days of darkness! Kind of makes our short days not seem so bad now doesn't it? One night recently we had a ring and a halo around the moon. When folks see this they often ask me what causes this and if it means anything to the coming weather? The halo forms when cirrus and cirrostratus clouds move into your area about 5 miles above the ground, these clouds are made up of ice crystals. These clouds often move in before a front or low pressure system and many times precede showers or precipitation. Statistics have shown that precipitation comes about 70% of the time within a couple of days if not sooner after you see a ring or halo around the moon.

The close of 2019 also affects individuals who have Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), which are pre-tax dollars set aside primarily for health-related expenses. The Internal Revenue Service requires those funds to be spent—or forfeited—by Dec 31. It’s a “use it or lose it” proposition, says Baehr.

If you have been putting off scheduling care, such as an annual check-up, allergy testing, or knee replacement surgery, it would be wise to check your deductible status and your FSA balance to see if there’s money to be saved, encourages Baehr.

“It’s important to schedule services promptly so that there is enough time to have the test or elective procedure done before the end of the year. Getting everything squared away by early December will help ensure the services you receive are considered part of your 2019 coverage,” he says.

New Port Richey, Fla. --Patience is a virtue!

Watching this season’s edition of the Pasco Hernando State College basketball team, is going to require a great deal of patience.

For the fifth time this season the Bobcats felt the disappointment of losing, falling to Hillsborough Community College 7659, Tuesday night Nov. 12, inside the home of the Bobcats-the Gymnasium.

Pasco Hernando State College basketball coach Micheal Jones said after the game, his team is making progress. He said that some of the progress is becoming evident, big steps made and in fact against the Hawks the Bobcats actually had a lead.

Jones also said that there was some improvement with his team keeping and valuing the ball, the Bobcats only turned the ball 11 times against the Hawks. Pasco Hernando State College going into the game against Hillsborough Community College averaged 23.7 turnovers

per game.

Leading the Bobcats against the Hawks in scoring, Antoino Tucker with 12 points followed Rodney Adderley with 11 points and helping his team with 10 points Tobias Compton.

Jones also knows that his team needs to improve on the defensive side of the ball, slowing down to look at the entire court and playing the entire game, not just in spurts.

“Better effort tonight, we still have a lot of growing to do. We have a lot of freshmen we got guys on the bench getting more minutes but they are getting experience,”Jones said. “We are getting better and we just have to get through December and peak at the right time, we will be okay.”

There are times during the game when the Bobcats lose focus and panic on the offensive zone. There are passes that have no chance of being completed, there are shots that are forced up and against the Hawks; those shots seemed to rebound long and the Hawks would be in position for the offensive rebound.

One of my greatest pleasures is introducing new hunters to the sport and helping them find success. Seeing the experience of the outdoors and the hunting heritage fresh, vicariously through their yet untrained eyes, renews my own love affair with the wild places. One of the obstacles that I have to overcome when taking out young folks on their first hunts is their expectations of an instant kill. Most of them, desirous of taking up the hunting trail have watched at least some of the hunting TV shows and watch their TV hunting heroes harvesting buck after buck after buck all crammed into commercial laden, thirty minute segments.

Well, my friends, it just doesn’t happen that way. Hunting is not the pastime to enter if you have expectations of instant gratification.

But, realizing their expectations, I do try to temper the long wait for antlers, by offering them the opportunity to harvest a doe. Meat in the freezer and a memory of success to further ignite their passion.

Our Florida Wildlife Commission has set aside certain days within the general hunting season whereby does/ antlerless deer are legal to harvest with a firearm. A fair study of the FWC’s website will reveal the dates for the doe harvest in each of the designated Deer Management Units. For our own county, within our own designated DMU, the dates are this weekend, Friday, Nov. 22 to Sunday Nov. 24. It took me quite a while to discover all of the dates for each of the DMU’s to take advantage of the many opportunities.

For anybody searching for opportunities outside of our county, beware the ever changing regulations…. You see, our FWC has broken Florida into zones, each zone with its own season dates and regulations and containing multiple Deer Management units with their own dates and reggtime ulations as well as each , with a DMU containing Wildlife Management Areas, each with their own dates and regulations. Sure, unnecessarily confusing, but hey if you have any questions about it, feel free to give me a shout.

This past weekend, I guided my lovely friend Cheyenne and her much younger step-brothers, Hunter 13 yo and Owen 7 yo, onto land owned by a longtime acquaintance, Mister JC of Suwannee County. Saturday, the boys joined me for a

coach Tommy Jones said his team didn’t quit and played hard against the Bobcats. He said, he thought that it was a struggle for the Hawks for the majority of the game.

“We shot the ball well early in the year and the zone got pretty wide,” Jones said about his team's ability to take advantage on the offensive glass. “When we are shooting we should flood those holes and get to the glass; that’s how we got a lot of them.”

Pasco Hernando State College plays a 2-3 zone defense that takes advantage of the speed that the Bobcats have on their team. It is also designed to help get rebounds.

The execution of the zone defense did not help the Bobcats as they out rebounded by the Hawks 45 - 27, which includes 17, offensive rebounds by the Hawks against the Bobcat’s defense.

Hillsborough Community College forward Michael Cole led all scorers in the game with 14 points, he also pulled down nine rebounds and blocked one shot.

PHSC nearly pulled out a win on Thursday Nov. 14 against Trinity College. At the end of the first half they led 37-30, but allowed Trinity a narrow victory with a

final score of: PHSC 69, Trinity 70.

Pasco Hernando State College next chance on improvement will be away at State College of Florida, Manatee- Sarasota, Nov. 19 at 7PM. Jones said, it is just a matter of his team remaining passionate about the process of improvement, keeping the excitement about the journey of the basketball season. Jones and the rest of the fans that follow the Bobcats will just need to be patient.

SAN ANTONIO, Fla. --- The pride of the Sunshine State Conference sat on the shoulders of the Saint Leo University basketball team as they prepared for the final game of the Saint Leo’s Basketball Classic Sunday afternoon Nov. 17, 2019 inside the jungle-Marion Bowman Activities Center.

The game had plenty of action with both teams trying to establish the offense. Flagler College looked early to work the ball in and then out to the perimeter. When the final horn sounded, the Lions were able to put away Flagler College 74-45, to even the score for the Sunshine State Conference against the Peach Belt Conference at the Saint Leo Classic.

Saint Leo University was trying to get the ball inside and take advantage of getting good position for a second chance by getting to offense rebounds.

Early in the game the Lions were concentrating too much on the offense that they had trouble setting up the defense. That created a time out called by Saint Leo University basketball coach Lance Randall and he had to remind his team that he expects them to play defense.

After the gentle reminder by Randall to his team to play defense, suddenly the easy looks for the Saints vanished. The offense for the Saints was forced into bad shots and they were out of position getting back into the defense.

“I am pleased right now in the direction of the hunt, both wide-eyed with wonder as darkness gave way to morning light and wildlife began to stir about. They were excited about the great numbers of birds and small game, but held on throughout the day until a young doe appeared. Hunter, the eldest of the two young brothers extended an invitation for her to ride home with us.

On Sunday, it was their older stepsister’s turn to hunt, her third outing, but the first to offer her a fair opportunity. She too, extended an invita-

tion to a second young doe, to join us for supper and her excitement was quite infectious. This coming weekend, here in our own county, I will be guiding a disabled veteran and another youth in search of success. My heart is full!

“I am really proud of him he struggled offensively in Alabama,” Randall said. “He came back and he had two big games.”

Flagler College basketball coach Chad Warner watched as his team rushed the ball up the court and then take the shot that left the Saints in a bad position. His team trailed by 10 points at 3:39 left in the first half.

Then the defense for the Saints became energized and forced the Lions into bad offense decisions. As both teams left the court for intermission, the Saints were only down by two points.

The defense for the Lions only allowed the Saints 15 points in the second half and they shot just 29.3 percent for the entire game.

“They are good!”

Warner said about the Lions after the game.

“They are good defensive team I have faced in Division 2. They were much more physically

and mentally tough than us in the second half.”

Saint Leo University finished the tournament with a record of 2-0 and improved their overall record to 3-1. Now the Lions will get ready for a meeting with the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Wednesday night November 20 starting at 7:30 p.m.

It was a tough loss for Flagler College but these two teams could become a very good basketball rival in the state of Florida-as it should be!

Hernando County Prep Boys Basketball Preview

With all the summer-fall sports now officially concluded in Hernando County, we move into the fall-winter season of athletics and it brings on boys and girls basketball. Along with basketball is boys and girls soccer, weightlifting and wrestling.

We take a brief look at all the boys basketball teams across Hernando County and what to look forward to this upcoming 2019-2020 campaign.

Nature Coast: Nature Coast sets the bar high for teams in Hernando County. Year in and year out, the Sharks are perennially in the thick of the action when it comes to winning district championships and going to the playoffs. That mantra remains the same for this Nature Coast team, as Dave Pisarcik and crew have the pieces to make another run. Question is how far can this club run the tables?

Springstead: When it comes to who is the best player for Springstead, there’s no argument this season who that is. Unique Torain returns as the Eagles top player this season after averaging over 17 points per game last fall. Springstead finished last year with a record of 12-11 and are always a strong team under the direction of Matt McGarry. His team this year could be a district championship contender if they can bring it altogether.

Hernando: Hernando is another team coming off a season in which it finished 12-15 but was very competitive throughout the 2018-2018 campaign. Now the Leopards will have to do that without two of its leading scorers from a year ago and that certainly will not be an easy thing to do. Jacob Batten averaged a team-high 17.8 points per game last season and will be sorely missed in the scoring department.

Central: The Bears were a talented and fun group to watch last season after finishing 12-15, but this Central team brings back the core of its team and should be good again. Leading the charge for the Bears will be junior guard Talon Bergantino, who averaged just over 10 points per game a year ago. Also alongside Beegantino will be senior guard Rashaad Boyce, who averaged around 11 points per contest. This team led by Bergantino and Boyce should stir up some noise.

Weeki Wachee: Two. That’s the amount of wins the Hornets were able to pull off last season, as the upended Tarpon Springs and Hernando Christian. Now the Hornets look to bounce back off a 2-23 season that saw the team play competitively in a lot of games but weren’t quite able to pull off wins. Weeki Wachee has to take small steps as they’re rebuilding the team up against some of the other solid Hernando County teams like Nature Coast and Springstead.

Hernando Christian: Much hype is always surrounding the girls basketball team over at Hernando Christian, but the boys team isn’t too shabby either. The Lions went 13-11 last year and played some of the neighboring teams like Academy at the Lakes, Zephyrhills Christian and Weeki Wachee. Hernando Christian has some of its returners back in the fold and bring an above .500 team should be in the cards.

Brooksville, Fla. - Gianna Huber (Sr) from Hernando High School took the Dunnellon Tigers soccer field firmly in her straight netting an opening day hat trick (3 goals) to firmly open her account a the start of the 2019-20 girls high school soccer season. Emma Naughton, bagged a brace and Bricyn Wylie, Ava Phillip and Bailey Burdin all contributed with a goal a piece as David Shrader’s Hernando Leopards ran out 8-0 winners. They followed this up on Wednesday night with a hard fought 1-1 tie at local rival Weeki Wachee Hornets.

Unfortunately for the Leopards it was the Sharks who were the visitors for the opening home game of the season. Nature Coast came into the game fully prepared and with 2 goals a piece from Kennedy Weismann, Mia DeRonda and Kirsten Lavalle the visiting Sharks snapped the Leopards 7-0. This left the Leopards with a 1-1-1 opening week. Meanwhile the Sharks moved to 2-0 as they also skipped past Citrus courtesy of a 4-0 victory in their home opener.

Springstead without a pre-season warm up game in the books, started the season at home to Crystal River – The Pirates took the game to the Eagles, but strength prevailed as 2 goals each from freshman Gia

DeRonda and Hailey Hunt (Sr) took care of any Pirate resistance.

The final score was 5-2 for the Eagles.

The Eagles and Hornets then battled out a 0-0 draw before getting ready to enter week two of the season.

Elsewhere in Hernando County Girls Soccer, Central played at home against an extremely strong Lecanto team, led by Kevin Towne.

Towne’s team came to play and following a 8-0 win left Bears stadium happy and victorious.

Central Bears boys soccer team, came up against two much stronger out of county opponents as they travelled to Lecanto. Being 4-0 down by half time did not help the cause. However a much improved second half saw them get the ball in the back of the net before ultimately going down 6-1.

Their home opener saw Regional Quarter Finalists of 2018-19 come to town. Joshua McKenna led the charge as the 611 nationally ranked Citrus team ran out comfortable 8-0 victors.

Hernando High School, behind their new coach, saw them falter at the first hurdle as it was Land O’Lakes who firmly took the game to last season’s district semi final Leopards. The visiting Gators firmly coming away with a 9-1 victory, with Jacob Kelly the lone scorer for the Leopards.

Wednesday night didn’t see things get much better for the Leopards.

Their coach was absent from the sideline and the team suffered a 8-1 loss at the hands of county rival Weeki Wachee. On the road to Nature Coast Tech in a replay of the 2018-19 District Semi final and with the game tied at 1-1 many saw a revitalized Leopards enter the Shark Tank. However it wasn’t to be as Nature Coast put 5 in the net in quick succession to end the game 6-1 victors and leave the Leopards winless in the opening week.

Nature Coast meanwhile moved to 2-0 behind their home opener as well as a 3-1 victory away at Citrus.

Peyton Burns started life at Springstead with back to back tied games as they kept Pasco to a 1-1 tie before leaving Crystal River with the same scoreline. Weeki Wachee, however, denied them any points as Seth Tarbox scored the only goal to take the Hornets to a 1-0 victory and leave them with 2 wins at the start of the season.

Hernando Leopards meanwhile travel to an extremely strong Citrus team before facing Fivay at home. They end the week on the road again at Springstead. Meanwhile the Eagles have a quiet week facing the aforementioned Leopards and a home encounter against Nature Coast.

I’ll be reporting from the girls soccer game between Springstead Eagles and Citrus. Will Sarah Bell be able to take her 1-0-1 undefeated team on the road and come back with her second win of the season?

NCT football season ends with region semifinal loss

Orlando, Fla.--- Just a chance! The long bus ride that started from the campus of Nature Coast Tech High School was symbolic of the long journey that these Sharks started way back in the month of August.

The journey included the hard work they endured, the sweat dripping under the blazing hot summer sun and the irritation of the many disappointments of games that were lost.

This football team just wanted an opportunity to show the state of Florida, under the soft glow of the neon lights from the city of the magic kingdom, that dreams do indeed come true!

The dream didn’t materialize against the Fighting Tigers. The 2019 football season came to a bitter end, Friday Nov. 15, with a 35-14, defeat against the No.1 team in Class 5A and 109th ranked team in the United States, Jones High School located in Orlando.

Jones High School scored 14 points in the first quarter and the Sharks could not overcome the deficit but they made the Tigers earn the win.

Nature Coast rushing offense did find some success in the first half and forced the Tigers to play an extra player up into the box at the line of scrimmage.

The philosophy for the Sharks was to apply the running game, take control of the tempo of the game which would limit the Tigers offense to be out on the field.

The plan was working!

The large and loud crowd that were busy making noise and creating a celebration atmosphere suddenly turned their focus on the Tigers defense and the mood changed to concern.

Nature Coast Tech High School football coach Cory Johns opened up the playbook for the Sharks and decided on a play, that maybe he now would think twice about.

called. He brought his team to the line of scrimmage, looked over the defense, got his team set and then started the play.

The play started to develop quickly as Burnett handed the ball off to Dedric Hall and then he pitched the ball into the hands of Kinyatah Morgan. He started sprinting toward the Tigers sideline. He drifted toward the line of scrimmage. Morgan looked up and brought the ball back and launched the ball through the night air.

It was a pass that a player is taught never to throw. His arm went across his body toward the middle of the field while Morgan was running to his right.

The football floated up toward the sky in slow-motion and then it came down from the night sky even slower into the waiting arms of the Fighting Tigers defensive back Rodney Echols.

Echols caught the ball, he made one move to his right and then ran 50 yards to the end zone for the score. It was the play of the night for the Tigers and the worst nightmare for the Sharks.

brought a collective sigh of relief from the crowd and the Sharks could never recover.

It was the kind of play that the Tigers needed to jump start their offense.

Then the fans in their seats, the players on the field and the coaches standing on the sideline witnessed momentum make up its mind and stay on the Fighting Tiger side of the field.

Nature Coast Tech High School worked hard during the season and overcame the adversity that accumulated during the season.

Injuries to key players up on the line of scrimmage forced Johns to call up players from the junior varsity. There was also the suspension of Morgan during the game at Wiregrass Ranch for what still looks like a football play.

BROOKSVILLE, FL -- Hernando High School hosted the girls weightlifting tri-meet on Nov. 13, 2019. Nature Coast dominated the Leopards den with 53 points. Hernando High came in at 34 points and Weeki Wachee at 22.

The girls' next big meet is on December 22 at Weeki Wachee High School.

This is a county meet and all five schools in the county will be competing.: Weeki Wachee, Central, Hernando, Nature Coast Tech and Springstead. The meet begins at 1 pm.

Along with basketball is boys and girls soccer, weightlifting and wrestling. We take a brief look at all the girls basketball teams across Hernando County and what to look forward to this upcoming 2019-2020 campaign.

Nature Coast: It was a rough 2018-2019 campaign for the Sharks, as the team went 7-17 and hopes are going into this season the program will improve from over a year ago. The Sharks have started off the preseason with a 72-25 loss to Wildwood, so Nature Coast will need to pull it together as they get ready to start regular season play.

Springstead: No team is coming off a more disappointing 2018-2019 season than Springstead, who went 13-6 just a couple years ago. The Eagles finished last year with a record of 5-22 and the graduation of several experienced players had something to do with Springstead’s drop. Despite having to go in the direction of the youth movement, it should pay dividends for the Eagles, as they’re another club that returns many players from last year.

As the stadium lights were being turned off, the echo of the crowd floated up toward the overcast sky above and the Sharks boarded the buses heading back home.

As the dust cleared, Nature Coast Tech High School the 2019 football season- had come to an end.

Hernando: The Leopards were one of the more surprising teams from a year ago in Hernando County, as they were able to finish 11-11 on the season.

With no preseason games under their belt just yet, this youthful squad should be able to capitalize from the success it had last year. Expectations are that the Leopards will be an above .500 mark club.

Central: Central took small steps last season when it came to improving and the Bears after going 2-23 a couple years ago, they did win one more game in 2018-2019. Despite not taking a huge jump when it came to the win-loss column, the Bears were in a lot more of their games last fall-winter and should take that next step this season. Central has many returners and should be a more competitive group.

Weeki Wachee: Reaching the state semifinals is always a huge deal and that’s exactly what Mike Munro and his bunch did last season, capping a historic campaign for the Hornets.

Now it’s likely back to reality for Weeki Wachee, as they lost many of their key players that led the Hornets to that very state semifinal berth. The Hornets are hoping they’re just reloading and not rebuilding, but expectations should be tempered as they have to work with a whole new starting lineup.

Hernando Christian: One of the county’s top girls basketball teams is on the private level in Hernando Christian. The Lions went an impressive 22-4 last season and are aiming to continue their impressive ascension.

Hernando Christian has already started off its preseason play, with a couple games under its belt. Expect the Lions to be one of the better Hernando County teams this fall.

Accuform celebrates 5 years without 'lost time incident'

ccuform’s President, Rob Ogilvee and Safety Director Mike Giovinazzi take no credit for the 1825 days that Accuform has gone without a lost-time accident in the workplace. That credit goes to their 270 employees who have embraced a “culture of safety,” putting best practices to use with regard to themselves as well as their co-workers.

The staff and management of Accuform celebrated their accomplishment on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 with an outside BBQ and games, as well as picking up new t-shirts commemorating the occasion and a desk toy called “Pinch Point Pattie,” part of a collection of action figures depicting OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health) violations that can cause workplace injury.

Accuform is a member of the Justrite Safety Group, a global workplace safety company with 1700 employees worldwide. According to President and CEO, Mark McElhinny, “Accuform sets the bar” for Justrite’s other member companies.

“If you set the foundation that safety is important with the executive management team, it will impact the employees as they’re out doing their jobs. We’re very proud.”

Ogilvee said that not only does Accuform help workers stay safe, but that the company depends on workers letting them know when they’re not safe.

Safety Director Mike Giovinazzi added, “This is the employee's safety culture. They bought into the concept of keeping each other safe and looking out for each other. It’s their safety program -- their safety culture. He then showed a text with a photo he received in the 6:00 AM hour that day, from an employee who asked, “Is this a safety issue?”

Hernando High School’s Brooksville Senior FFA Chapter has been named a

Top 10 National Finalist eighteen times in this competition and received the highest chapter ranking possible (3 stars) for the past 18 years.

Former Hernando High School Brooksville Senior FFA students, Sarah Babione and Jourdan Cunningham received their American FFA degrees.

The American FFA degree is the highest degree awarded by FFA, where less than half of 1% of membership achieves this honor. Today, there are 700,170 FFA members between the ages of 12-21 in 8,612 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

SEED Foundation to host funfilled Snow Bash

by ROCCO MAGLIO rocco@hernandosun.com On Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 Bill and Joe's Open Mic night at the Bistro in Brooksville celebrated five years of music and mayhem.

Open Mic night is currently on hold for the time being, but the atmosphere on Nov. 14 was as jubilant as ever. The event had become an institution in Brooksville's nightlife. It was the place to be on Thursday night.

Bill Creel and Joe Solomon are former Hernando High School teachers, so many of their students would come out to see their former teachers and classmates. They are also actively involved in the community and Joe Solomon is a social media wizard, so there was a decent audience.

The atmosphere of Open Mic was easy going.

You could sign up and get to sing your song that night. The singers ranged in age from a toddler singing a nursery rhyme to senior citizens. Many of the singers were quite talented and it was always an enjoyable experience.

Over the years people had grown from tentatively singing a song at the Open Mic to having a developed stage presence. Local bands and local celebrities have stopped by to sing a few bars including Bronson Arroyo a former Major League Baseball Pitcher and musician.

If you would like to see Bill and Joe perform, but missed them at the Bistro, they will be performing at the Tangerine Drop on New Years Eve.

On Saturday, November 30, the SEED Foundation will be hosting its third annual Snow Bash at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and goes until 3:00 p.m.

The organization will bring in more than twenty tons of snow for the children (and adults) to play in. So, for the “snow birds” or transplants that miss the winter wonderland or for those who have never had the thrill of experiencing the fluffy white material, this event will provide a great opportunity for some fun.

There will be a sledding area in which sleds will be provided for the attendees to sled down a natural hill in the park.

It will also feature food, local vendors and live entertainment.

“We will have a toddler zone and snow experience zone for children to play in. We’ll also have children's activities at most of our vendor

stations. For example there will be a bean bag toss, coloring, etc. Santa and Mrs. Santa Claus will be there as well as some super heroes, such as Wonder woman and Princess Elsa,” stated SEED Foundation president Judy Mastro.

Admission for the Snow Bash is just $5 per person, making this an affordable event for the whole family. Parking is $3.50 (CASH ONLY).

Proceeds from the parking will be donated to the volunteer students and the Hernando County Education Foundation.

It will be built in a modern castle style and will include a gift shop, cafe, thrift store and walk-thru museum. On the castle grounds will be a 24/7 day care/life learning center with fees based on a sliding income scale.

“Our hope is to encompass senior citizens, who would actually live on the property as well, to help with the children by volunteering some of their time to play games or assist in teaching. There are many lonely seniors that would love to spend time with children,” commented Ms. Mastro.

“We are hoping for much community support considering the necessity of the [Castle] Project,” Ms. Mastro concluded.

What to have in your financial emergency kit

Disasters are a part of life.

Whether it’s a hurricane, tornado, or a terrorist attack, preparation is key to survival and reducing after-event hunts for critical documents.

Let’s face it, disasters happen. When they do, having your financial papers in order can save you money, time and anxiety in an already stressful situation.

First, gather all your financial information together and place it all in an easy to carry container that is waterproof in a safe, easily accessible place in your home. If you have to leave in a hurry, you want to know exactly where the information is so you can grab it and go, feeling confident that the information inside will not be damaged. Make a back-up copy of everything to keep outside your home, in a safe deposit box or other safe location, out of the immediate area. You will want easy access to your information if everything inside your home is destroyed.

Here are things you need: Identification: Gather all of your family's identification papers. This includes Social Security cards, birth certificates and passports for each member of the household, as well as your marriage certificate. You should have a photo of each person taken within the past year in the event that the family becomes separated and identification photos are needed.

Make a copy of your driver license and place it with the other material. Having all your identifying material available after an emergency will make proving who you are much easier -- which means that getting any aid available will take less time and be much less of a chore.

Cash/credit: When an emergency happens, you are likely to need money to help you through the event. Having a credit card specifically for this purpose can make the days after the emergency much less of an ordeal.

Also, you will want some cash on hand. In the case of a large disaster such as a hurricane, power will likely be out, meaning you won't be able to access ATMs, and credit card machines may not work.

Important phone and account numbers: Make a list of all the important contact phone numbers you may need after an emergency. This includes relatives and friends that you need to contact and financial phone numbers, such as your bank, insurance agent, your attorney, etc.

This list should also include all contacts in your wallet, such as credit card contact numbers. Having this information handy is also helpful if your wallet is stolen. You will want to make sure you have account numbers for any bank, investment and credit card accounts.

Policies and documentation: Having all of your insurance policies -- auto, disability, homeowner's or renter's insurance, life insurance and medical insurance -- accessible is essential to begin to rebuild as quickly as possible. Be sure to include corresponding information, such as doctors' names, hospital cards, immunization records and prescription drug cards.

Glen Lakes Veterans and Friends Association Golf Outing raises record amount

On Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 the Glen Lakes Veterans and Friends Association held its third annual golf outing at Glen Lakes Golf and Country Club. Participating in the event were 136 enthusiastic golfers – a record number. The purpose of the golf outing was to raise money for veterans’ organizations in Hernando and Citrus counties. Even before the final results of the take came in, the amount raised this year was over $32,000.

This money came from the golfers’ entry fees, corporate and individual sponsors, raffles and silent auctions, along with miscellaneous donations.

Ron Ford, Dennis Blum and George Friel, as well as many others worked countless hours to put the event together.

Gary Gray, a U.S. Air Force veteran, was one of the primary organizers of the golf outing.

“Numerous volunteers from inside the Glen Lakes community spent almost a year working on the event, soliciting hole sponsors and items for the silent auction and raffle, etc.

The three organizations we primarily support at the present time are the VFW, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans,” remarked Gray.

While most of the golfers were from the Tampa Bay area, some came from out of state.

Ron Kelly and David Schrabeck traveled all the way from Wisconsin to participate.

“We’re both veterans

so we wanted to help support the cause and support Denny [Blum].

He’s actually from my home town and we’ve known each other for a long time. It wasn’t about how we scored; it was about being with friends,” said Kelly.

“We came out for the weather, too. Back home it was 10 degrees,” added Schrabeck.

“When the lady sang the National Anthem this morning that was very heart-felt. That started out the day perfectly.”

Judy Blum was in charge of the silent auction and raffle. Several other women worked tirelessly on this phase of the event. An assortment of items were set out to bid on. These included a fishing rod and reel, power tools, gift basket of wines, autographed picture of Brett Favre, and a bicycle.

Tom McCrary, the golf pro at Glen Lakes helped out with getting the score sheets set up.

Richard Tubbs, food and beverage manager handled the breakfast and the lunch buffet.

Staff members from Terlep Chiropractic were there to give massages.

After five hours on the golf course - from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - the participants probably appreciated that as much as the food and beverages.

ans and Friends Association was founded three years ago. It started with just eight members and now has over one hundred. The group meets monthly at the Glen Lakes Country Club and you do not have to be a veteran to join.

Its main purpose is to help veterans’ organizations that need funds.

They also help veterans navigate the bureaucracy of the Veterans Affairs office when applying for benefits. The process can be lengthy and complicated and many veterans do not receive the benefits they’re entitled to.

Ron Ford explained, “Denny and I have met veterans who weren’t getting any help from the veterans services officers. We’ve pointed them in the right direction and they’ve received 100% disability. Our organization has changed their lives from being on the verge of poverty to getting their tax-free pension. We have an attorney who is a disabled veteran who also helps them when the process [of obtaining benefits] gets into a quagmire. He steps in and represents

them.”

Ford related one story of a particular veteran that they helped. He was 100% disabled and had three children. His youngest child had died and he needed $1,700 for the funeral. Catholic Services was able to come up with only $400 to help him. Ford vetted him and found that he had a legitimate need, so four members of the organization came up with the rest of the money out of their own pockets.

The Glen Lakes Veterans and Friends Association is already hard at work on next year’s event. Because the outing is non-competitive to a certain extent, you don’t need to be an Arnold Palmer or an Annika Sörenstam to participate.

Should my business seek certification?

Whether your market is local, statewide, nationwide or global, no matter what industry your business may be in, one thing that most business owners have in common is that competition is fierce When competing against so many companies for clients, often the business owner will eye government entities. However, they will soon discover that competition for government contracts is just as intense.

Business certification allows a business owner to gain an edge on the competition while trying to sell to the government. If a business owner takes this route, they will find there are many opportunities for a variety of certifications, as well as many levels of operation they could qualify for, and many levels of government they can work with.

There are prospects for shelter contracts and sub-contractor projects and certification opens the doors to diversity programs with the various county, state, federal and even corporate entities.

If a business is 51 percent majority-owned by a woman, a minority or a Veteran, certification could present opportunities for a business to grow.

If a business owner is considering seeking out certification, there are many things to consider, such as the differenc-

es between entities, whether or not certification guarantee contracts and how much financial and time dedication is required?

Certifications Are Not One Size Fits All If a business owner is seeking certification, it is important to understand that certifications are typically not transferable between government entities. If a business owner is certified at the state level, that certification will be recognized by all state agencies, but not necessarily individual counties or cities within that state.

Each entity has its own criteria or guidelines that they follow. Criteria that each consider is pretty standard across the board: •There has to be majority owner (owns at least 51 percent) who can demonstrate management and control of the business. Ownership itself is not enough to meet the standard in today’s climate.

•Who is that owner? Is that owner a female, LGBT, a minority person by ethnicity, or a veteran or a service-disabled veteran?

•Must be able to provide detailed proof that they are the majority owner Certifications Do Not Guarantee Contracts A common misconception about being certified is that the offers are going to start pouring in. This is not a realistic expectation. Becoming certi-

fied is simply a marketing tool.

And like any other tool that is available to you, you have to be able to build and develop a strategy on how you're going to use it to your benefit.

However, some government agencies utilize what they call shelter markets or preferred markets. Though the language is varied, the goal is still the same. The government seeks out certain businesses for individual opportunities. So, there is a very complex equation that they go through in determining if an opportunity can be sheltered or preferred. If there are enough certified companies that could potentially respond to that opportunity, only those businesses that are certified become privy to it.

Should I Collect Them All? Business owners must

continue to be strategic with their time. Each certification requires a lot of time from an applicant. Just gathering all of the documents for each certification takes time.

A business owner could seek certifications from each government agency, but they must realize the time and effort that is needed for each one.

The most effective way to utilize this tool is to create a strategy to determine which government entity is right for the business and dedicate time and resources to that. Because again, just because you receive a certification, it does not mean you are guaranteed a contract. You still have to develop a marketing strategy for each one, and they all have different requirements. Also, some certifications cost money or require you to become a member, so it could also be a quite expensive endeavor to seek out more than one certification.

Becoming certified is a benefit for most business owners. Taking the time to do your research or seeking out the help of no-cost economic development resources to help you determine which certification is right for your business is the key to success.

Despite the damp chilly weather, an enthusiastic crowd turned out to sample beer, wine and other “potent potables” at the Greater Hernando Chamber’s fifth annual Untapped Craft Beer and Wine Festival. The event took place on Friday, Nov. 15 at the American Aviation property at the airport.

People dressed in warm coats, boots and hats started filing in at 5:00 p.m.

Those who had purchased VIP tickets for $75 were allowed in early and had exclusive access to the VIP area inside the hangar.

They also received a free tasting glass and were able to sample free food prepared by area restaurants, as well as free drinks.

Upon exiting the festival, the VIP ticket holders also got a canvas bag filled with goodies, such as a commemorative glass tumbler and a complimentary ticket to a Stage West production.

Bonefish Grill served up a spicy Bang Bang Shrimp. Texas Road House had cubed sirloin steak and corn, along with other dishes. Gator’s had chili to sample.

Approximately fifty vendors participated. Most had tents set up outside promoting their products and services. Two cigar stores offered cigars for sale. There were also businesses selling local

honey, jewelry and other items. Several food trucks offered eats for sale. The majority of the vendors were breweries, wineries and distilleries. They handed out free samples and never seemed to run out.

The Mark Anthony Band featuring Mark Anthony, Kristina Lynn, Eddie Lesco, Chaz Darling and Bobby Cavanagh entertained the crowd with popular songs and “oldies.” Marvelous Marvin from Hits 106 FM, a well-known local DJ, circulated through the group doing interviews and making his usual humorous banter.

More than twenty businesses sponsored the event. Presenting sponsors were Carter Foreman, Attorneys-at-law and Jet Global Care. Crystal Harley Davidson was a Platinum sponsor.

A committee made up of twelve people had been planning the event

for almost a year. Lisa Callea, who just recently came on board as the chamber’s event program coordinator, noted the numerous volunteers that had showed up to do an assortment of tasks from setting up and helping direct traffic to checking ID’s and cleaning up afterwards.

Ms. Callea stated, “The purpose of the event is for businesses to come together and learn about each other. It’s also fund-raising for the chamber.”

Comments from those attending were positive and ranged from their favorite drink to the delicious food.

Debbie Smolik remarked, “Gator’s chili was great. I like the spiciness of it.”

“The best thing was the ability to sample from a lot of local businesses,” said Tom McDonald.

Heather Beck remarked, “We’ve come to

this event every year and to see this many people come out in the rain is awesome.”

“The set up was well-organized. There was nice assortment of food and the band was great. We got great service inside the VIP tent and it was well-worth it,” stated first-time attendee Geri Krohn.

The Hernando Untapped Festival is just one of many public events that the Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce hosts throughout the year.

Come to find out, Jim has also performed with another famous Country Music Band, The Band Perry. The Band Perry is a trio of siblings - Kimberly, Reid, and Neil who’s popularity skyrocketed on the country music charts almost 10 years ago.

“They’re a great and close family. Just good people,” he said. “I came on-board to perform with them a few years back when their talent and popularity first exploded.”

“My favorite song of theirs to play on fiddle is still ‘If I Die Young,’” Jim said. “It was just very well-written, and, full circle, now that she's older, my daughter enjoys listening to it with her friends as well.”

The teaspoon of irony (I told Jim) was that I had met Kimberly Perry when I was a very young girl. She was just a couple years older than me. We took piano lessons as children for years from the same small-town piano teacher in Alabama. Her family was very close, even back then. Letter to the Editor At a recent meeting of the Hernando County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), Julie Maglio, of the Hernando Sun, lamented the lack of local news access, and encouraged the commission to work with her as one of the few news sources in Hernando County. She highlighted our county’s classification as a news desert, which has resulted in a dearth of information available to our residents. Our community requires access to a variety of news sources to make decisions about our values, health, consumer needs, travel arrangements, and more. Businesses interested in setting up shop in Hernando County thrive with an educated workforce and informed consumers. Moreover, as research from the Journal of Communication indicates, a lack of local news leads to an increase in political polarization. Making sure folks have access to a variety of sources of information is a necessary and noble goal.

It has come to the attention of many in the Tampa Bay area, and the nation, that the Citrus County BOCC wishes — entirely for political reasons — to reject an opportunity for an affordable digital subscription to the New York Times, a paper to which Hernando County public library users do not have access. This clashes with the mission of our public libraries and with the American Library Association’s declaration: “Public libraries are government agencies subject to the First Amendment. Rejecting or

censoring a publication based upon its political viewpoint represents both content and viewpoint discrimination that is contrary to the spirit of the First Amendment’s promise of freedom of speech and freedom of belief.” To put it mildly, such a decision would not be in the best interest of Citrus County residents, and many have already spoken out against such an abhorrent and partisan position.

We should take this opportunity to consider the information diet of our citizens and the ways in which our government restricts or enriches it. This incident has given us a chance to consider what would happen if this opportunity was presented before our Hernando County commission, made up of a similarly homogenous group.

Would they choose to reject needed resources for partisan gain? Would our commission be met with the same global disapproval as the commission just a few miles north?

Fortunately for Hernando County library users, we do not have to run such an experiment. Anyone with a free library account may digitally request that our library system add any book, film, magazine, or newspaper. The library card holders of our community have the power to ensure that our county has access to a diverse array of information sources.

Letter from the Editor I wholeheartedly agree that information and education is the lifeblood of a strong workforce and community. The goal of Hernando Sun is to inform our readers. My point in addressing the Board of County Commissioners was to communicate to them, that Hernando County has been categorized as local news desert and thus our efforts to bring local news to the area should be embraced by the county. I’m not sure that the news desert description scales to national news, which the New York Times brings to the table. The libraries in both Citrus and Hernando counties have print subscriptions to the New York Times as well as other large newspapers. Neither county has digital periodical subscriptions.

Hernando County has a $10,000 budget for periodical subscriptions. I believe in the importance of local news so much, that we do not charge the library for the papers we deliver to them. Each library receives two newspapers per week. We can’t just deliver one since patrons inevitably take them home.

Sometimes if you’d like to see a product that you believe is important available to the public, you need to raise the funds to make it happen.

The Citrus County Commission’s 3-2 vote on Nov. 19 to deny the purchase of a digital subscription to the New York Times is understandable.

They would be obligated to purchase digital subscriptions to a host of other newspapers, which would eventually become a budgetary nightmare.

Why we cannot compromise our rights to come together There is no way we can continue to deny the United States is in a moral, cultural and political civil war of ideas. The battle lines have been clearly drawn by progressives. They want to change our Constitutional Republic into a communist/ socialist society.

The progressives believe the government officials should directly control our lives from eating to exercise, health and anything else . They have openly argued for a radical revamping or eliminating most of our constitution and Bill of Rights. They have tried to practice and demand a living interpretation of our stable, free and prosperous Constitutional Republic.

The progressives are no longer disguising their objectives. Most progressives are in lockstep indicating they want socialist/communist form of government.

The “Squad,” Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and the other progressive candidates for the 2020 presidential election have firmly confirmed these ideas. These progressive leaders are blatantly calling for the abolishment of our second amendment:

the right to own firearms.

Presently they are asking to abolish the Electoral College and change the right that a person is innocent until proven guilty to a person is guilty until proven innocent. They no longer believe in the sanctity of life even as far as post birth abortion. They are against the freedom of religious expression and limiting freedom of speech through political correctness and hate-speech laws. They are promoting blurring the lines between objectivity and accusation, truth and speculation, critical thinking and group-think.

Traditional Americans refuse to accept the progressive changes in limiting the rights and power given to us by our forefathers. These unelected elites insist on their right to control our government.

We cannot continue to take gradual steps towards a socialist form of government and think we will be able to preserve our republic. If we continue to dismantle the underpinnings of our Constitutional Republic we will be transformed into a socialist/communist government. We are at a

Under the eight-year reign of President Obama, the mantra was that we must respect the office of the presidency by not questioning his legitimacy to be our president. Any legally elected president deserves the right to dignity and respect of the office until the next presidential election in four years, which means even when

the opposite side wins and yours loses.

This respect for the electoral process has been violated by our permanent elite bureaucrats. The “Deep State” which includes the FBI, IRS, State Department, Justice Department and the courts were “weaponized” to impeach President Trump from the beginning of his tenure. This conspiracy is playing out in the progressive media that has taken the role of activist for promoting socialism not objective reporting.

All levels of law enforcement are not being allowed to enforce our laws. The local, state and federal law enforcers are being emasculated. Citizens are demeaning the police by throwing water on them and even killing them. Government officials are placing unreasonable demands on them while not backing them when they do their assigned duty. Most frightening is the socialists/communist followers have already

indoctrinated our public school, university and graduate students to believe a top down government is better than a capitalist constitutional republic. This indoctrination has to be reversed by teaching civics, history and having open debates on issues.

Traditional Americans are citizens who believe that our Constitutional Republic form of government is a sacred agreement that has directed us to be a nation of exceptionality. American citizens must stand up to send an undeniable message that our institutions must support the duly elected president’s administration.

The impeachment fiasco shows why a president must reign in the bureaucracy and clean house.

We have to drain the swamp of all government officials who do not do the work of the people, in the same manner that all foreigners who become US citizens must pledge allegiance to the United States

constitution. All legally elected representatives have to take an oath of office swearing on the Bible to uphold the Constitution of the land. Any official who refuses to do this should be banned from serving in any official position.

Cleaning house of corruption and subversive actions should be done by enforcing existing laws that will remove those lying under oath or countermanding existing federal laws.

We must stop reelecting self-serving corrupt and criminal officials.

The mystery and bureaucracy of worship WILLIAM F. HOLLAND

MINISTER / CHAPLAIN I realize it’s awkward to worship someone we cannot see, but that is the point of living by faith.

The Christian life is all about having a passionate desire to be with Jesus in the secret place of our hearts, and as we draw nearer to Him, He will open the eyes of our spirits so that we can see and know Him more personally. These lines and precepts of spiritual levels expose the vast difference between living a default religious existence and becoming a remnant disciple of our Lord and Savior.

God is calling us today to spend more time with Him and fall in love with Him so deeply that nothing in this world can interfere with this bond of holy intimacy. Is this what you want today? Do you long to be loved with the most fervent affection in heaven and earth? If this is what you are seeking, then you have found the meaning of life as God can supply your every need!

However, there is one thing that can prevent you from becoming what Jesus died for you to be – your will. Love is a choice and is measured by our thoughts and actions. “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you” (Psalm 63:1-5).

Worship is a unique and widely misunderstood term that humans seem to avoid thinking about, yet it's actually something we practice constantly. Our fallen nature shrinks away from thinking about or openly praising God but boldly exalts the other idols in our life.

It’s amazing how many people focus their attention on a special interest but would never consider worship as the simple act of personal adoration. There is an old saying “Everybody serves somebody” and I believe we can conclude that whatever has captured our imagination receives our highest praise. Of course, the human race comes fully equipped with this ability to be infatuat-

ed and controlled within the free-will of the conscience and is more than willing to bow down to whatever we love. We deny that many times we have actually crowned ourselves as lord and king, which explains why human nature rarely considers the fact that idolatry has more to do with the one we see in the mirror than an outside influence or temptation. The gospel summarizes the concept of worship as either going through life in the default mode of serving our own desires or making the decision to be spiritually re-born to serve and worship God. In short, we must be willing to change. Let it be said that He will compel, but does not force anyone to worship Him; and according to His spiritual principles, the dark side also abides by the same law. It’s true, you and I are constantly being influenced and choosing whom we will obey.

Together let us take a closer look at the definition of worship: “A homage or reverence paid to a thing or person; the acts, rites, or ceremonies of worship; adoration or devotion comparable to religious homage shown toward a person or principle (like the worship of wealth), honor, respect, veneration, reverence, esteem, exaltation, admiration, to extol, admire, glorify, magnify, and praise” (The Oxford Dictionary – American Edition). He draws us with His love, and we respond with gratitude and reverential awe. To know Him is the purpose of living, to love Him is our most precious gift, and to worship Him is our greatest honor and privilege. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, God desires to fill you with His love and teach you everything you will need to know concerning the divine realities of His abundant life. May you embrace God’s Word as a vital stepping stone in your pathway toward comprehending Him more intimately. Heaven will be filled with the joys of worshiping our Lord and Redeemer and we can begin today. “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker” (Psalm 95:6).

Garden Kilts Earlier this year in New House I got in the shower and lathered up when suddenly I needed to go to the bathroom, number one. There was no time to rinse and dry, so I peed there. I felt guilty. But then it happened again, and I didn’t feel so guilty.

In fact it felt natural, like when we humans spent our days hunting and gathering across savannas and in woods and peed as the need arose and didn’t have to aim. I think I now understand kilts.

The third time it happened I rationalized: it’s going to the same place as the other drains, and unlike the toilet, the shower floor is in constant flush and being rinsed with soap and warm water. (My wife likes her water hot enough to redden lobsters, but I can only tolerate warm.)

The fourth time, I started singing about it to the tune of “Smoking in the Boy’s Room”: Went into the bathroom To wash off all the grime Lathered up, I didn’t know I’d perpetrate a crime I really couldn’t help it I’m feelin’ kind of bad But boy it felt so good When I didn’t hold my blad Peeing in the shower (strum and thump and strum and thump): guitar and drums I’m peeing in the shower (strum and thump and strum and thump) Even women do it I’m sure that it’s true But never ever think It’s okay to do number two Yeah, that’s disgusting, but I’m 764 months old and this is what happens in my head. And of course I don’t sing that whole thing. I made up the rest of the song just for this, and I didn’t rewrite every stanza of the original. I simply chant “peeing in the shower” for the few seconds it takes and then finish washing off.

Oh I mostly use the toilet, and I always put the seat and lid down afterwards just for my Smeechiekins.

when necessary. However, I do confess that I sometimes hold it just for then.

But now I’m tempted to pee outside. I thought about it years ago when my grandson’s other grandpa advised me that peeing around your campsite would prevent animals from entering.

The last time I went camping was with him, my grand-counterpart, and it was many years ago, but after that I wondered if it would work at Old House, which was fenceless and wide open.

I decided my bladder wasn’t big enough to mark the whole backyard. But

New House is surrounded by a neighborhood that is plagued with a pestilence of pets, and while my new backyard is bordered by fencing, I will argue that there is a need to use eco-friendly repellent to prevent all vermin, from lizards to squirrels, and maybe feral cats and escaped dogs, from hunting and pooping on my property.

I take breaks and drink lemonade or plain water; enough during the four to six hours of the mowing ordeal that I could probably circle the whole yard and around each of my wife’s gardens.

Mainly I’d just like to pee while pushing my Murray. I might invent garden kilts just for that.
