Springstead and Weeki Wachee High School have each added a new sport into their girls’ athletic program. Springstead inducted sand volleyball into their athletic offerings, and Weeki Wachee added girls’ flag football. Weeki Wachee High School has put girls’ flag football within the athletic department for the Spring 2020 season. “This is very exciting for us at Weeki Wachee,” Billy Hughes said. “I think it’s important for us to have this opportunity to be that platform for these talented female athletes.” Their preseason game is at Lecanto High School on February 25th at 6:30 pm. The girls only have a four-game season, and it seems perfect to get this program started. See HISTORY, Page 12

Presidents Day is not without controversy

fter nearly three years of bitter controversy over the actions of the present occupant of the White House and another vitriolic presidential election campaign already in progress, you might think the Presidents Day holiday on the 17th would bring at least a weekend of tranquility and civility. But the occasion most often thought of as a time to honor the two February-born men historians have considered our greatest presidents — George Washington and Abraham Lincoln — has become

just another victim of vicious political correctness. For decades most presidents, none more than Washington Adon Taft and Lincoln, have been remembered for their accomplishments, often growing out of a personal religious faith. No more — at least in the popular culture as pictured in today’s mainstream press.

Admiringly known as “father of his country,” Washington was a battle-tested officer who had fought Indians on the frontier, served in the Continental Congress that adopted the Declaration of Independence, and led the American army to victory in the Revolutionary War before he was elected our first president under the newly adopted U.S. Constitution. None of that matters anymore in the minds of the elitist mob who claim the right to make moral See TAFT, Page 21

The long-awaited results from the Weeki Wachee River carrying capacity study conducted by an independent third-party consultant group were presented in a public workshop on February 5, 2020. Human traffic -which rose significantly in 2016 -- is shown to be the primary stressor, causing bank erosion and a decline in water quality. No policies were made or changed during the meeting. The Coast Guard Auxiliary Meeting Hall was once again packed with residents eager to hear the results and learn about the future solutions planned for the river. The extensive study was conducted from May 2018 through August 2019. Water Resources Scientist Mary Szafraniec, PhD, PWS of Wood, a global consultancy in several areas, including environmental solutions explained the extensive data in a conversational tone, using easily understood photographs of the areas studied and charts of the resulting data. Alexander Springs in Ocala was used as a comparison to visually show the differences in similar features compared to the Weeki Wachee. “Point Bars” are the areas at which visitors to the river are most likely to park their vessels and wade or swim. Many of the popular point bars resemble a beach, with a sandy area above the water line, extending at an incline into the middle of the river. The point bars that are troubled have been denuded, or made free of vegetation from foot traffic and the parking of vessels. The denuding of vegetation was shown visibly in the “Recreational Trampling Assessment” where a member of the data collection team stepped on vegetation
